A focus on disaster preparedness…
All of us are, most likely, very busy with giving flu vaccines, and using and/or
revising our disaster preparedness systems to ready for a potential Ebola expo-
sure. Important work. One of our many OHN roles is to educate our manage-
ment and employees about how to keep safe in times of new and continuing
exposures. We have just posted the latest Cal-OSHA interim guidelines for
Ebola on our CECRAOHN website (www.cecraohn.org) I was also just reflecting
how lucky we are in California to have the Cal-OSHA Aerosolized Transmission Disease standard in place
(http://www.dir.ca.gov/title8/5199.HTML)
I also want to remind our members of the great (free!) respiratory protection educational materials
on the AAOHN website: http://aaohnacademy.org/rpp/rpp-program.php
It also is the 25 year anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake, a 6.9 magnitude on the Richter
scale, with the epicenter in Santa Cruz County, near Watsonville. This is our CECRAOHN region! The Hay-
ward fault has been in the news lately due to its activity and “creep”---it is very helpful to use some of the
wonderful tools from the US Geological Service, to see the location of the Hayward fault:

I know we are all doing preparedness; how best to refresh these trainings is the key challenge in my
mind. I am reflecting on the Japanese company, in the World Trade Center (WTC) 9-11 terrorist at-
tack, where I have heard that each employee had a backback in their office, and in this backpack
they had emergency preparedness supplies, including, for example, an N95 respirator, safety
glasses, a flashlight with batteries, a bottle of water, with a first aid kit. How easy would this be to
implement in our workplaces? I also have been on the American Red Cross Scientific Advisory
Council meetings, and when I am at these meetings twice a year, I always run into council members
going up and down the emergency exit stairs in the hotel and meeting areas… knowing how to
evacuate a building is positively correlated with surviving a disaster. This is confirmed by Robyn
Gershon’s study of survivors of the WTC.

The American Red Cross has wonderful apps for first aid and disaster preparedness, and
the best part is that these apps are linked to the weather service: http://www.redcross.org/

This is a great time to re-energize our OHN efforts in disaster preparedness. Let us make
sure we are ready!
Happy holidays to all. For your 2015 New Year Resolution, please think of getting involved in our
wonderful CECRAOHN Chapter. We have a great team, and would love to welcome your talents.
I wish to thank and acknowledge all the work of the CECRAOHN Board of Directors—thank you!!

Give Up an Indulgence for a Good Cause and a Healthier Life
The AAOHN Foundation launched its 2014-2015 Fundraising Campaign in early August. The
campaign is designed to support the important work of the AAOHN Foundation while also encouraging
members to live a healthier life. Here is how it works:
From August 1, 2014 to February 28, 2015, give up one indulgence per week (e.g., cup of coffee,
cocktail, dessert, pack of cigarettes) and donate the cost of the indulgence to the AAOHN Foundation.
At an average indulgence cost of $4, over the 26-week campaign you can give $104 to the Foundation
while making small steps toward healthier living. For every $52 you contribute during the campaign
period, you will be entered into a drawing for a $100 gift card.
Your donations can be made at the end of the campaign period by mailing a check for the AAOHN
Foundation to the National Office or you can give at the AAOHN Foundation booth at the AAOHN 2015
National Conference.
Your support is appreciated and will allow the AAOHN Foundation to raise money for education and
research that benefits all members of the association.

Membership Appreciation Event at Korbel Winery– by Stephanie Phelps, RN, ANP-BC, PhD (c)
Page 5
CECRAOHN held its annual membership appreciation event on Saturday, September 6th, 2014 at
Korbel Champagne Cellars in Guerneville, CA. 24 CECRAOHN members and guests attended the event.
We were greeted at Corbel by Lois Temple, the Korbel Occupational Health Nurse, and received a histori-
cal tour of Korbel, followed by a lovely lunch on the veranda. After lunch, we tasted the different Korbel
champagnes and toured the production room and warehouse. Lois presented a Korbel occupational
health and safety presnetation, which was followed by CSAOHN President, Mary Gene Ryan’s “Fit to a T”
Bone & Joint Initiative on Osteoporosis. The membership appreciation program was evaluated favorably
by attendees.

Monterey Mushroom Farm Event– by Karen Sternstein, RN, CM
Page 6
10 CECRAOHN nurses joined Dr. Walt Newman, the medical director of the Monterey Mushroom Farm on
Saturday morning October 11, 2014. We met Dr. Newman at his office for an injection refresher course and then
caravanned to the farm about 10 minutes away.
We worked under the National Vaccine Injury Compensation program (Public Law 99-660 established a no-
fault liability regulation). We divided into two groups after setting up the clinic in a conference room. Half of us went
on the tour of the mushroom farm and packaging facility and the other half gave vaccinations. Then we switched.
We administered about 90 vaccines. Some workers brought their children. This was the first chance for the employ-
ees to get vaccinated this season, and that day was a high yield mushroom picking day so some deferred to an-
other time. Although a large percentage of workers spoke Spanish, there were also agricultural workers from the
Punjab region of India and we were fortunate to have a CECRAOHN nurse with us who spoke Punjabi.
When we were done, we were treated to lunch and talked a bit about health care issues facing the agricul-
tural workers, and how affordable healthcare reforms have affected their health care coverage. We had such a
good time that we hope to make this a CECRAOHN annual community service project. To learn more about the
Monterey Mushroom Farm, check out www.montmush.com

Q: Are you from the Bay Area?
That fact that I am not all that nice should be a giveaway. Born and raised in
New England.
Q: Where did you get your degree?
I did my RN training in Connecticut, but did my NP work and OH training at
UCSF.
Q: Where do you work and how long have you worked there?
I’ve been the full-time medical provider at SLAC National Accelerator Lab for
about 3 years. Before that I was in the Stanford Emergency Department as an RN.
Q: How did you become interested in Occupational Health Nursing?
I fell into it, and then became interested. When I applied to UCSF it was very very late in the application
cycle and there were few spots remaining, so I applied to OH. I came to love the preventative medicine
aspect, working to prevent injury and illness in addition to treating those that occur.
Q: What is your job like?
I care for and manage care for those with occupational injuries or illnesses, though about ½ of our clinic
visits are for non-occupational conditions for which I may provide basic care and/or refer out to their
personal care provider. I work closely with Stanford wellness groups on classes and workshops, the on-
site recreation center (gym) on program and exercise prescriptions, the Industrial Hygiene and safety
groups on worker health, and on a variety of projects and initiatives.
Q: What do you like the best about your job?
I get to wear a lots of different hats (not literally, though I really should wear more hats). In addition to
patient care I get to participate in a variety of projects and events and have a lot of collaboration with
outside groups.
Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
Most weekends I will find time for a trail run (yawn, I know). But I also like to make time for periodic
adventures (I went to the Galapagos in April and am headed to Patagonia in December).

This bill, except as specified, when there is new scientific or medical information and the Chief of
HESIS, in consultation with the Director of Industrial Relations and the Chief of the Division of Environ-
mental and Occupational Disease Control in DPH, makes a specified determination, would require chemi-

the names and addresses of their customers who have purchased specified chemicals or commercial
products containing those chemicals, and certain other information related to those shipments, upon
written request of HESIS, for every product the final destination of which may be a place of employment in
California. The bill would deem the names and addresses of customers, the quantities and dates of ship-
