Editor, San Manuel Miner: It is very important that everyone exercises their constitutional right to VOTE on Tuesday, March 13, 2012. There will be two elections in Mammoth. One confusing ballot for both. The first one is a Primary election. Running as write-in candidates are: Alvaro Barcelo, Frances Wickham, Juan Barcelo and Joe Brewer. The second election is a Recall election. Juan Barcelo and Joe Tamayo are running against two incumbents. We are committed to stand up and fight for the people of Mammoth and we need your vote. During the last four years we have all had to deal with the poor economy but yet, many towns and cities have been able to do great

things for their citizens by electing leaders who are committed to working together and who have chosen to do what’s best for all of the people. We believe that what has been lacking in Mammoth has been a strong leadership and a management team who sees it as their job to communicate with all elected officials and keep everyone informed of all that is going on in our town. A management team who sees it as their responsibility to treat and show respect towards all our citizens. A leadership that places great importance on each and everyone of our citizens-our youth and our seniors. We have seen and heard many complaints from citizens who have attended Council meetings and voiced their

concerns and appealed to the leadership to do the right thing for the town of Mammoth. Many times falling on deaf ears of some of the Council members. We have heard complaints about the administration, public works, and the police department. Department heads have come and gone. We have seen citizens as well as elected officials being stripped of their rights to express themselves by the present town leader and town clerk/manager who have decided not to allow “Call to the public” and “Council comments.” We have heard complaint after complaint from citizens who have tried to bring a concern to the town council and were not allowed to get their item on the agenda. Why? That’s one

Letter to the Editor: Get out and vote in Mammothway to silence people! But, the people are not going away! We are asking the townspeople of Mammoth to get out and vote and elect a council who will work together and put citizens’ safety and concerns first. We are asking for a change and a chance to turn this

town around in a positive way. We are asking for your vote and your support! Let your vote be your voice. Be heard loud and clear. VOTE. Elect people who are committed to help the people of Mammoth. VOTE and elect people who were not hand-picked

by the status quo so that the agendas of the present town leader and clerk/manager can continue. Only your vote can bring the change. /s/ Alvaro Barcelo/s/ Frances Wickham/s/ Juan Barcelo/s/ Joe Tamayo/s/ Joe Brewer

The Mammoth Police Report is submitted by the department. According to state law, there are two methods by which police may arrest suspected offenders. The suspect may be physically taken into the department and booked into jail, or the arresting officer

may write a citation and release the suspect to appear in court later. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Jan. 30 Mammoth Fire assisted a patient in the 400 block of Hetzel. Patient care was turned over to Southwest

Editor, San Manuel Miner: First things first: it is illegal to remove any tape recordings or original printed documents from the town chambers. One can read minutes online or have a clerk make photo copies of the minutes. Never are the tapes or original documents to leave the premises. (No, I am not this Patricia Johnson.)

We moved here in December 2003. As a concerned citizen and wanting to make Mammoth a better place to live, I have served on the Planning & Zoning Committee since 2004. I also attended council meetings on a regular basis. Usually the audience consisted of two, maybe three or four people. Planning & Zoning? We

Letter to the Editor: There are other things that can be done to improve Mammoth

rarely, if ever, had anyone in the audience except the interested party. While Planning & Zoning is the front line for what “laws” or ordinances directly affect your property and yes, even the marijuana question, no one attended. All these years, I have not witnessed anyone step up to do or say anything constructive. Occasionally, of course, Laney for Parks and Recreation, volunteer fire department, some other citizens who I know must feel like a voice in the wilderness, unheard. Hats off and congrats to those who have worked selflessly. Diane Stirling, our library is a showcase. The unsung efforts of those who have worked to create the Mammoth Historical Society and Tourism Group: these

folks have struggled without help for several years to make this happen. There are many opportunities for citizens to make our town better. The food bank is another. Now, to you. Where have you been? Great, finally go out to vote! You’ve done nothing but complain every since about the people you voted into office. In all my years, I have never witnessed such discourse (putting it mildly). For the town of Mammoth to succeed, you need to refocus that energy into doing what will help the town! Not personal agenda and/or attacks on individuals. This accomplishes nothing except more hard feelings. Not the way to go. Yes, this also means council. Originally, Mammoth was built and cared for by the citizens, by the community. Now? What are you doing to make things better? Our

strength is going to come from community. Forget State and Federal government. Get back to our roots and build together. Ask what needs to be done. Ask what you can do to help make things better. All this energy and time is wasted. Simply put: if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. As for Rachelle Sanchez doing an impossible job, with no help from the council, even to say at times harassed by the council: just because she may be off in the town car doesn’t mean she is not on town business, as the mayor has done many times. Reminder: she works council nights and extra time of her own time to get things done. She’s short-handed and short-paid! My son always asks: “Would you do that job for that kind of money?” I think not! Rachelle Sanchez is not the problem.

Most sincerely, /s/ Diane TheobaldConcerned Citizen and Planning & Zoning Chair

Editor, San Manuel Miner: I have attended many of

the Mammoth Town Council meetings and have observed what goes on. I find it entertaining at the best and somewhat flawed in the pursuit of goals, ideas and care about the general welfare of the public. At the last meeting the agenda had omitted “The Call To The Public” which I am sure is a violation of the State of Arizona rules and laws for running a town council. None of the council members seemed to notice or care. I have also observed the general public attending the meetings and in particular the reporter from the Miner, Jennifer Carnes, who sits on the second row taking notes silently and at no times have I observed her causing any kind of disturbance or asking questions; she was just doing her job and leaving when the meeting was over. I usually speak to her and her daughter and exchange pleasantries. She has never said anything about the council actions, inactions (plenty of that) and has conducted herself with the utmost decorum. So it is my opinion that he comments about her actions I have read in the paper are made-up tales and for what reasons I do not know or what motives? As a tax paying citizen of Mammoth I think most of the Town Council should have limited tenure, not to be there for more than one or two terms. Regards,/s/ Bob Sloan

Two girls were injured Friday, Feb. 3, when the ATV they were riding in tandem flipped over. The two were riding in the desert in the San Manuel area near

the First Baptist Church. One girl sustained serious injuries and had to be transported to the hospital by helicopter. Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Public

Information Officer Elias Johnson said that the girl had a broken pelvis. The other girl, he said, walked away from the accident with only bumps and bruises.

Johnson also reported that the girls were close enough that emergency personnel was able to reach them with an ambulance and did not require four-wheel vehicles.

He explained that there was other traffic in the area and the accident was reported shortly after it occurred. Both girls were wearing helmets at the time of the

accident, he said. The names of the two were not released and Johnson said they were approximately 12 or 13 in age.

By Mila Lira This weekend more than 60,000 people celebrated the Arizona Centennial at the Arizona Best Fest which was held at the Arizona State Capitol Mall in Phoenix on Saturday and Sunday. The event was designed to celebrate the best of everything in Arizona and the Copper Corridor was not forgotten. Event organizers invited the Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition to bring the Mobile Visitor Center to the event. The MVC is used by the coalition to promote tourism in the corridor. Over the two-day event, volunteers from throughout the Copper Corridor provided information about all there is to see and do in the corridor. It is estimated that the volunteers at the MVC provided information to at least 3,000 people. There were many event pavilions that celebrated Arizona’s history, natural resources, military presence and ethnic contributions. There were several mentions about the people, places and resources in the Copper Corridor. Local companies with a presence in the Copper Corridor helped to sponsor the Arizona Best Fest pavilions. Asarco/Grupo Mexico sponsored the Hispanic Pavilion which featured the contributions of Hispanics throughout Arizona as well as provided event goers an opportunity to visit a car show, eat traditional Hispanic foods and make piñatas, cascarones

Copper Corridor communities represented at Best Fest(confetti eggs) and paper flowers. There were also many folklorico dance

troops and mariachis from across the state that performed, as well as the

Powerdrive band which has local roots to the corridor.

Resolution Copper sponsored the Natural Resources pavilion which featured a large museum tent that talked about the history and industries of the natural resources in Arizona. The tent also featured a display on the Arizona National Scenic Trail. This pavilion

included demonstration and information booths from the Bureau of Land Management, Arizona Game and Fish, the Arizona Off Highway Users Association and the Forest Service. The Copper Corridor MVC was also in the Natural Resources Pavilion.

By Mila Lira While getting lost is not something anyone chooses to do on purpose this weekend you can get lost and actually have a good time doing it. This weekend the Town of Superior celebrates the opening of another segment of the Legends of Superior Trail. The trail is one of newest attractions to Superior and provides hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders the opportunity to get lost in the legends that are in and

around Superior. The event will begin with a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. and a brief ceremony to celebrate the opening of the canyon segment of the trail at 9 a.m. at the Magma Club, located at 38 Kumpke Court. The fun and festivities begin with guided hikes and ecotourism demonstrations. The Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center will be hosting pre-hike wellness sessions at the Besich Park. There are five

different guided hikes to choose from and all five will be offered at both 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. There will be a guided hike of Pinal City which will be conducted by Scott Wood the archeologist for the Tonto National Forest. Wood will tell the story of Pinal City and show hikers the wagon wheel tracks that are in Pinal City. Steve Germick the Tonto National Forest historian will provide a guided hike of the Pinal Cemetery where Mattie Earp is laid to rest. A geology hike is being led by ASU professor

Steve Semkin. Professor Semkin will explain the geological history of the Queen Creek Canyon which can be traced back 1.6 billion years. The Arizona Trail Association will also provide guided hikes around the Picket Post trailhead of the Arizona Trail. If you are looking to hear more legends and lore of recent day Superior you will want to sign up for the Legends and Lore walk with Superior resident Tony Acosta. The guided hikes are

Oracle artists and artisans who wish to participate in the 20th annual Oracle Artist Studio Tour need to apply

before Feb. 20. The event, which draws visitors from throughout southern Arizona, will be

held April 14 and 15. As in previous years, a dedicated website will feature a self-guiding map of studios, full

artist details, and information about a “welcome center” where art shoppers can stop to preview artworks.

An application form is now posted on the website for Oracle artists to download and send to studio tour

coordinators. Last year’s brochure and photographs are also shown. Go to www.oraclestudiotour.com.

By Michael Moore Among the many activities and initiatives supported by SaddleBrooke Community Outreach (SBCO), two programs are specifically designed to support the education of youth within its service area. The SBCO Scholarship Program provides scholarships for students attending an accredited post-secondary institution and the Educational Enrichment Program provides small grants to assist educational and community organizations in programs designed to meet SBCO’s mission “To make a positive impact on the lives of needy children in neighboring communities through improved self-respect, better school attendance,

and higher scholastic achievement.” SBCO’s Scholarship Program provides a $2,500 scholarship each of a student’s first two years. Interested students are encouraged to review the “Scholarship Qualifications and Criteria for 2012-2013” and, if qualified, complete the “Scholarship Application.” Both documents are available on the SaddleBrooke Community Outreach website, on the Education page, located at http://community-outreach.org/our-programs/education. Individuals representing schools or community organizations interested in SBCO Educational Enrichment Program funding are encouraged to review the “Educational Enrichment Program

Guidelines, Criteria and Funding Cycle” and submit a completed “Educational Enrichment Program Application

consistent with the identified funding cycle. Both documents are also located at the SBCO web address listed above.

Questions about the SBCO Scholarship Program and the Educational Enrichment Program should be sent

to Michael Moore at [email protected] or Julie Goodman at [email protected].

Snow falls in Oracle

Mother Nature celebrated Arizona’s 100th birthday by dropping snow in the state’s high country, including Oracle. (John Hernandez photos)

By Mila Lira On Thursday last week, offi cials from Resolution Copper explained to the United States Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee that if the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act of 2012 is not approved by the end of the year there is great concern that Rio Tinto may choose to invest in other projects. Resolution Copper Vice President Jon Cherry explained in his testimony that to date Resolution Copper has invested $750 million studying the feasibility

of the project, and that to continue moving forward Resolution will need to request another $6 billion to fully develop the project from their parent company Rio Tinto. The hearing was called by Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.), chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. Bingaman called the hearing because of the differences in the bill that was approved in the house in October H.R. 1904 and Senate bill 409 which was introduced in 111th Congress. In the current version of the bill, the National

Resolution Copper – Funding could be in jeopardy

Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) will be completed after the land is exchanged. S.B. 409 required that NEPA be completed before the land is exchanged and it also gave the Secretary of Agriculture the fi nal say to approve the exchange provided the secretary felt it was in the best interest of the public. Resolution Copper offi cials also testifi ed that they expect the mine plan of operations to be completed by the second quarter of this year and that the completion of the operation plan will trigger the NEPA process. Senators John McCain and Jon Kyle testifi ed in support of the project. Several letters of support for the project were submitted by local governments including the Town of Superior. Shan Lewis from the Inter Tribal Council of Arizona testifi ed in opposition of the project. He expressed concern that the project will jeopardize sacred sites for the San Carlos Apache Tribe. In a press conference following the hearing Cherry explained that the hearing went as they had expected and he thanked Congressman Paul Gosar and Senators McCain and Kyle for their support. If the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act of 2012 is approved it will transfer 2,422 acres of land in the Tonto National Forest known as the Oak Flat Campground to Resolution Copper. In turn Resolution will convey 5,300 acres of Arizona conservation land to the United States, the majority of which lies in the San Pedro River Valley. The Resolution Copper project is expected to create 3,700 mining jobs and 3,000 construction jobs.
