The squad was ranked No. 8 in the preseason poll before falling to Penn State in overtime in the season opener, UVA’s lone loss of the season OVERVIEW OF THE 2021 CAVALIERS • Virginia returns its entire starting lineup from last season • Virginia’s veteran lineup includes three fifth year players in Rachel Robinson, Makayla Gallen and Lauren Hausheer and five fourth-years • US Women’s National Team player and three-time All-American Rachel Robinson returned as a grad student to anchor the UVA defense. Robinson has been a captain or co-captain of the team since her sophomore season • Makayla Gallen, a fifth-year grad student, was a forward for the first 3.5 years at UVA. She moved to the back in the spring portion of last year’s schedule and will continue to play as a defender this year. Gallen has appeared in every game for the Cavaliers since the first game of her freshman season • Laura Janssen, the Cavaliers’ top offensive threat last season, returns to lead the strikers this year. Janssen, who was named to the All-ACC Second Team and the All-South Region Second Team last season, led the team with 9 goals and 18 points • Midfielder Adele Iacobucci was second on the team in points (17) and goals (8) last season, tied for ninth in the ACC in points per game and eighth in goals per game. The NFHCA All-South Region First Team honoree was named to the USWNT roster this summer • Midfielder Annie McDonough closed out the season scoring four goals in the final six games of the year, including the game-tying goal at Louisville, and the game-winners against BC and Syracuse. She has eight career goals and 11 career assists • Amber Ezechiels, a two-time Second Team All-American, returns for her fourth season as a key member of the UVA defense and corner attack. Ezechiels led the team with nine assists last season while also adding three goals • The Cavaliers also have a veteran presence in goal with grad student Lauren Hausheer and fourth-year Taylor Henriksen. SCOUTING LOUISVILLE • Louisville is one of two undefeated teams in the conference, coming into the match with a 6-0 record

• The Cardinals return 18 players including nine starters from last season’s NCAA Final Four squad

• Julie Kouijzer and Alli Biting have both earned ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors this year. Bitting is a fifth-year senior who is a two-time NFHCA All-American

• Katie Schneider leads the team in points with nine on three goals and three assists

• Virginia leads the all-time series 8-7, but Louisville has won the last four meetings, all of which happened last season

SCOUTING OHIO STATE • Ohio State (5-1) has won four straight and moved into this week’s NFHCA Coaches Poll at No. 24 after topping Wake Forest 2-1 last weekend

• Goalkeeper Aaliyah Hernandez is the reigning NFHCA National Defensive Player of the Week after making 13 saves in last weekend’s games with a .965 save percentage and allowing just one goal

• Virginia is 11-2 all-time against the Buckeyes

• Virginia won the last meeting 2-1 in 2019

HEAD COACH MICHELE MADISON • Head coach Michele Madison is in her 16th season at Virginia and her 33rd overall as a head coach

• Madison is a member of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame and was named the 2017 ACC Coach of the Year

• She has a career record of 423-257-8 (.620 win percentage) and a 213-113 (.650 win percentage) record at UVA

• Her 423 wins is sixth most among active DI coaches and ranks 8th overall

• Madison is one of only two active Division I head coaches to be a part of two United States Olympic staffs, having worked as a manager with the 1988 Olympic Team in Seoul and served as the head goalkeeper coach with the 1996 squad in Atlanta

2020-21 SEASON AT A GLANCE • VIrginia finished last season with a 7-11 record and did not earn one of the two at-large bids available for the compressed NCAA Championship field

• The Atlantic Coast Conference was the only conference in the nation to play last fall. The ACC had two seasons, fall and spring. UVA played 11 contests in the fall, going 2-3 in conference contests. The Cavaliers also played four games against ACC schools that were considered non-conference games

• The ACC held its championship in the fall with UVA advancing to the semifinals

• Virginia played seven games in the spring, six of which were conference contests

• Seven of UVA’s games last season (out of the 18 it played) were against the No. 1 or No. 2 ranked team in the country (UNC and Louisville)

• Virginia was ranked as high as No. 11 and as low as No. 14

• Virginia was an NCAA Semifinal team in 2019

JUNIOR PAN AMS • Danielle Husar missed the first two games of the season as she was in Santiago, Chile, competing at the 2021 Junior Pan American Championships

Husar and her Team Canada teammates won the gold medal and have earned a spot in the Junior World Cup, which will be contested in December in South Africa

SENIOR NATIONAL TEAM MEMBERS • Rachel Robinson was named to the roster of the 2020 U.S. Women’s National Team and is also a member of the 2021 squad. She has yet to earn her first international cap

• Adele Iacobucci was named the the roster of the USWNT in June of 2021. She has yet to earn her first international cap

• Iacobucci was also named to the U22 roster for the Pan Am Games, but declined the opportunity

• Assistant coach Alyssa Parker was a member of the USWNT before retiring earlier this year. She amassed 50 international caps

• Annie McDonough and Makayla Gallen were members of the U.S. Women’s National Indoor Team

• Both traveled in January 2020 to compete in the Rohrmax Cup, in Vienna, Austria

• McDonough is a veteran of the U.S. Women’s Indoor Team, having been a member of the squad during its gold medal run at the 2017 Pan American Championships. Six months before joining the Cavaliers, she traveled to Berlin, Germany to play for Team USA in the 2018 Indoor Hockey World Cup

JUNIOR NATIONAL TEAM MEMBERS • Danielle Husar is a member of the Canadian U21 Junior National Team

• Greer Gill, Alexandra Morgan and Meghen Hengerer have been invivted to attend the 2022 U21 and Women’s Development Team selection camp that is being held this winter
