Silage Rating – Silage ratings are based on a combination of Beck’s testing, digestibility, tonnage and starch.

Starch – Starch is a good source of energy derived from the grain.

Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF) – A measure of hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin representing the fi brous bulk of the forage. Hemicellulose and cellulose can be broken down by microbes in the rumen to provide energy to the animal. Forages with higher NDF will take longer to digest and therefore reduce intake.

Neutral Detergent Fiber Digestibility (NDFD) – A measure of how much of the NDF is digestible fi ber. A silage with higher NDFD is potentially more digestible and has higher available energy in the diet. According to Michigan State University one point difference in NDFD equates to 0.55 pound of milk/cow/day^.

Crude Protein (CP) – The total protein in the sample including true protein and non-protein nitrogen. Protein is required on a daily basis for maintenance, lactation, growth and reproduction. Proteins can be further fractionated for ruminants according to their rate of breakdown in the rumen.

Milk/A. – A projection of potential milk yield produced on an acre. Based on Milk lb./ton and forage tonnage per acre.

Milk/Ton – A projection of potential milk yield per ton of silage dry matter based on digestibility and energy content of the forage.

Tons – The projected amount of forage weight (adjusted to 65% moisture) produced on an acre of land.

For farmers interested in enhancing fermentation of haylage or corn silage, Beck’s BIO-XTRA™ lineup has three options to choose from based on your specific needs, plus a mold inhibitor. Beck’s BIO-XTRA products offer farmers more enzymes and more colony form-ing units (CFUs), resulting in improved animal performance (more milk/ton and beef/ton).

BIO-XTRA™ Liquid Mold Inhibitor is a proprietary blend of FDA approved food-grade components that are adapted and tailored for use in forage preservation applications. Its combination of mold-inhibiting additives help reduce the propagation and spread of mold in silage bags, bunkers, and piles. Easy to calibrate to match silage inoculant application rate, it serves as a powerful addition to the BIO-XTRA inoculant product lineup.

Improves aerobic stability and reduces the growth of undesirable molds and yeast in all forage types. Provides an added level of protection to ensure quality feedstuffs for the upcoming feeding year.

BIO-XTRA™ II is a forage inoculant comprised of water soluble bacteria and enzymes for ensiling of haylage, baleage, and other grasses. The greater concentration of bacteria allows for a wider harvest window under varying conditions and a more rapid and efficient fermentation.

BIO-XTRA™ + is a silage inoculant comprised of water-soluble bacteria and enzymes for ensiling of corn silage, high moisture corn, and high moisture ground ear corn. It features a strain of E. faecium to improve starch digestibility, a blend of lactic acid bacteria to cover the range of pH changes during fermentation, and L. brevis for backend aerobic stability. It also helps speed fermentation and reduce dry matter loss and heating in the bunker.

Enzymatic activity from the fiber- and starch-degrading enzymes improve nutrient availability and energy conversion during fermentation and in the rumen, which research shows can positively impact milk production, average daily gains, and feed efficiency.
