In keeping with my theme of life as a squash professional I was contacted by
a person who had found a Spalding wooden racket with Heather Mckay's
name on it and on the throat it has 18 World Championships. So I’m guessing
but I think it's around 1980 when Spalding brought this autographed model
out after Heather retired in 1979. This racket brought back great memories
for me as I was in Sheffield UK when Heather won the very first ever World
Women’s Open after an absence of 2 years since she had won her last British
Open in 1977.
February was quite hectic with pennants and leagues starting but we managed to get under
way on time and numbers aren’t too bad. A huge thank you to Kane Fasolo again for helping
me to do the draw and fixtures on Sporty HQ ... thanks Kane , I could not do it without you. I
attended quite a few DSR meetings and WA Squash is playing a more involved role which the
DSR really appreciate. Board members are also attending courses relevant to their roles
which makes for very interesting feedback.
Having moved to Canada for a very lucrative contract in a Toronto club, the incentive to win
the first official World Open was too great and Heather turned up to play. I had been playing
in an ISPA event in Sheffield the week before and decided to stay on and watch. Heather
asked me if I could do some routines with her and we trained for a few days before the event
started and we did drills during the event. Looking back it was a thrill to be on court with her
as she was so competitive and so disciplined. She did drop a game to Sue Cogswell from the
UK but Heather after 18 years and at the age of 38, showed
why she is without a doubt the G.O.A.T. and won the event.
I read on a lot of sites that some think that Nicol David was
the best female player or even Susan Devoy but I can
assure you not one of these players would have won a
game from Heather in her prime!
WA Squash has our AGM on the 25th of March and this will take place at Vic Park Squash
Club on Wed the 25th at 6.30 pm. Four Board members are vacating but all four have re-
nominated which is great for the stability of squash in WA as we still have issues with Squash
Australia and affiliation fees. Our finances are back in order and we have once again secured
DSR and Healthway funding. As I am writing this report, our President Glenn Hitch is now
home after a few days in hospital where he underwent a small operation and we wish him a
speedy recovery.
Our relationship with Squash Australia is much better and a huge thanks to Leigh Anne Kaye
for taking on this role and working tirelessly with Joanne Brodie (the new president of SA).

Kane Fasolo
The weekend was a great success with only one incident in the Open Mens semi-final between David Ilich and Tim Cowell.
Sue Hillier Reports
At one game all and the third game a cliff hanger, Dave ran in to retrieve a drop shotand clipped Tim's shoulder on his way out from the shot, an innocuous collision.Dave not feeling well, went to hospital ending up with concussion.
It was great to see several players from Broome (especially juniors) at this event.

Warren Oliver Reports
The Busselton Cub would like to thank its many sponsors: Hillzeez Down South SurfShops, Busselton Discount Drug Store, and Wayne Evans for suppling the very popularCrayfish in the raffle, Ron Clayton for the compiling the draws,
with one player, Joyce Barnett, having entered an incredible 30 times out of a possible34 and with her first entry way back in 1988 (the 2nd year of the tournament) and fromthere she didn't miss a tournament for the next 21 years. So this year there was aspecial acknowledgement to Joyce to honour her achievement of 30 years.
This is a unique event in which 2 rival clubs, Busselton and Bunbury come together torun this wonderful event. The Busselton Squash Club will continue to play its weeklypennants out of the Sebel Courts in Busselton.
Four other players have also played 20 or more being Moya Credaro, Ron Buswell,Warren Oliver and Linda Mcbrierty. All 10 year plus players were given a BusseltonSquash Club wine goblet as a memento. Over the past 34 years 553 players haveplayed at least once in the tournament, and it was great to see 10 players make theirfirst appearance at this iconic event.

Fixtures are planned, and finals held at the end of each season.
How is it organised?
What is Friday Night Masters?
On joining you will be allocated a team; however, there is no pressure to play everyweek if you are unable to do so. Play when you can, and just inform the venuebeforehand if you are unable to make it on a particular date.
What does it cost? The cost is $12 payable each Friday you attend. This includes supper. There is a supperroster to share the load a bit, and if it's your turn to bring along supper to share, yourentry fee for the evening is returned to you. If you are unable to stay for supper, thenthat's fine too. You will, however, miss out on the great camaraderie and fun that istypical of the social part of the evening.
Friday Night Masters is a weekly competition run specifically for Masters players. Weencourage you to join in this great competitive and social night, and catch up with fellowMasters you may only see at tournaments. All levels of players are welcome andcatered for. !COME ALONG AND JOIN US ON FRIDAYS
Season 1 of 2020 Friday Night Masters commenced on Friday, February 14. Play commences at
7:30 pm each Friday.
The Masters competition year got off to a fantastic and fun start with the Battle of Belmont. The
creative team names based on 'battle' themed movies/TV inspired some fantastic, hard-fought
squash matches, and, thankfully, lots of smiles and happy faces not covered with war paint or
battle scars.
Venue: Squash World Brentwood, Disney Street, BRENTWOOD.
The Masters Committee organised terrific prizes as well; the winners received a $20 movie
voucher and a WAMS bath towel, and the runners-up laid claim to $10 movie tickets and a
WAMS hand towel.
It's not my intention to become boring, but I'd just like to mention once again the importance to
WA Masters Squash of maintaining the Friday Night Masters competition. Some states are lucky
to have enough Masters players to have a full home-and-away Masters fixtures pennant
competition. Given WA's geographical and population size constraints, that's just not possible
here. All we can do is provide a great venue and a well organised (by a group of dedicated
Masters generously donating their time) weekly competition, encourage everyone to come along
and build on the existing group that attend, and hope we can grow the numbers in order to keep
the comp going for those younger Masters now joining the ranks. It's fantastic and heartening to
see new faces each time we hold a Masters event.
The team names included: Star Wars, Star Trek, Braveheart, Lord of the Rings, Wild Bunch,
Apocalypse Now, Great Escape and Where Eagles Dare. With a total of 63 entrants, forming 6
teams of 8 and 2 teams of 7, the action was (mostly, we are Masters after all) fast and furious,
and the evening was nicely capped off with a delicious supper of chicken, chips and plenty of
salads, bread and nibbles.
Friday Night Masters
Cost: $12 (including supper)
