GCFM CLUB GUIDELINES

As a member of the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts we ask that clubs do the following to

help the organization have better communication with their clubs and be better able to provide

services.

Pay membership dues to GCFM by May 1st of each year. Form can be found on our website;

www.gcfm.org and in the Mayflower and will be emailed from the GCFM office.

President should attend or send a representative to each of the two major GCFM meetings

each year (Fall Conference in October and Annual Meeting in June).

Send in GCFM Yearbook Directory form with information on club officers no later than June

15th. Form can be found on our website; www.gcfm.org and in the Mayflower and will be

emailed from the GCFM office.

Send 3 copies of your club’s yearbook to the GCFM office by October 15th of each year and

one copy to your District Director (may be an online yearbook).

President should attend or send a representative to each of the two district meetings

(district coffee in September or October and annual meeting in April or May).

Keep your District Director and the GCFM president informed of projects and activities that

your club is involved with.

Invite the GCFM president and your District Director to one of your club’s meetings during

their two year terms of office. They can be invited together or separately. Any program is

acceptable.

Club presidents are expected to forward information to club members sent to them by the

GCFM office, the GCFM president and their District Director

SERVICES AND PROGRAMS OFFERED BY GCFM

The Federation offers a number of services to help clubs and a number of programs to educate

clubs and their members.

SERVICES

All services are optional, but provide help to clubs. GCFM officers can explain any service in more

detail if a club is interested.

Ability to be a non-profit 501(c)3 under the GCFM umbrella. Registration or renewals are

due by October 1st of each year. Form can be found on our website; www.gcfm.org and in the

Mayflower and will be emailed from the GCFM office. Contact GCFM 2nd VP for more info.

Insurance to protect clubs and club members. Insurance applications and renewals are due

by April 15th each year. Form can be found on our website; www.gcfm.org and in the May-

flower and will be emailed from the GCFM office. Contact GCFM 2nd VP for more information.

Grant money for civic or historic projects of up to $2000. Applications for grants are due by

July 1st of each year. Form can be found on our website; www.gcfm.org and in the Mayflower

and will be emailed from the GCFM office. Check website for more information.

Helen DeOrsay Freidberg Scholarship to GCFM schools for club members to encourage

them to expand their knowledge. Form can be found on our website; www.gcfm.org and in

the Mayflower. Check website for more information.

There are 11 scholarships of $1000 offered each year to high school seniors who

will be freshmen in the fall, and college and graduate students majoring in the field of

horticulture, floriculture, botany, conservation, forestry, agronomy, city planning,

landscape design, environmental studies, land management, biology and allied

subjects. Information and applications for the scholarships can be found on the

GCFM website; www.gcfm.org. Check website for more information.

Awards to clubs in recognition of the work they have done. Award applications are

due either July 1st or December 1st depending on the award. Awards are listed on the

website; www.gcfm.org and procedures for applying are also there.

Program Workshop is held in March at Tower Hill Botanic Garden and Elm Bank.

This brings prospective speakers together so clubs can see what programs are

available, how much they cost and even book them if they want. Information is also

available in the Program Edition of the Mayflower in the spring.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

These programs are held during the day, usually in the morning, and last 1 to 2 hours.

Fees may be charged to cover material cost or speaker fees. Some programs require

pre-registration.

Morning of Horticulture – A series of three programs that bring top speakers to

speak on current horticultural subjects of interest to garden club members. No pre-

registration is necessary. A small fee is charged at the location to cover hospitality.

Dates and locations of lectures are on the GCFM website; www.gcfm.org.

Morning of Design – A series of three workshops in which attendees are taught to

create a specific style of design. Materials are supplied and each person goes home

with a design. A fee is charged to cover cost of material. Pre-registration is necessary

and forms are in the Mayflower and on the GCFM website; www.gcfm.org.

Back to Basics – A series of three demonstrations by top floral designers on specific

styles or design techniques. Pre-registration is necessary and a registration fee is

charged to cover material and forms are in the Mayflower and on the GCFM website;

www.gcfm.org.

Environmental Workshop – A single program held on a specific environmental

topic to enlighten club members on current environmental issues.

Civic Development Workshop – A single workshop with a landscape designer or

other professional to help clubs with their civic projects. Each workshop looks at a

specific problem or problems that occur. Pre-registration is required. A small fee

may be charged.

Schools – Four schools (Environmental, Flower Show, Gardening, and Landscape

Design) are offered each year. Each school consists of 4 courses; a different course is

given each year until the four are complete. They are then repeated. Students may

take the school for knowledge and may join one of the coordinating councils when
