Maths
I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. Philippians 4v13
Maths: Ideas for tasks and activities to support Maths learning at home.
Welcome to ACE’S virtual maths page.
Each week, Years 1-6 will be set a challenge in the style of a ‘convince me’ question.
This style of question is designed to encourage pupils’ thinking, reasoning and
mathematical discussion skills.
The strategy “convince me” defers judgment on a pupil’s answer, encouraging
sense-making and fostering pupil “ownership” of mathematics.
When having a go at the challenges think about how you can prove your answer,
you could:
Write a sentence to explain
Show your working out by drawing: tens frames, number lines, numicon, place
value counters, diennes, part-whole models, bar-models or whichever way
you prefer.
Create a poster for a rule/rhyme to help others.
We hope you enjoy the challenges; these will be uploaded every Monday!
Reception
There will be a different craft or practical activity uploaded each Monday to help
reinforce maths skills.
Others thing you can do at home to practise maths skills:
Maths is all around us, so look for opportunities for you to do some problem solving
together, making connections between what your child is learning at school and the world
around them.
Follow a recipe- measuring ingredients, fractions, percentages.
Daily weather- reading the thermometer, talking about whether the temperature
was higher or lower on different days and what the average temperature was.
Shopping- planning a budget, looking at prices of items, talking about which coins or
notes to pay with and how much change would be needed.
Planning a journey- prices for travel, timings of the day, distance to the destination.
Cooking- counting ingredients, timings to cook, fractions, percentages, price of ingre-
dients, budgeting.
Exercise- Counting repetitions of different movements, using a stopwatch, aiming to
beat a personal best.
