LETTER FROM THE MINISTRY TEAMDear FriendsOne of the most moving experiences of the Pilgrimage to the Holy Land was a visit to the Jeel alAmal - Generation of Hope - school in Bethany which is supported by the travel companyMcCabe Pilgrimages. A school for boys up to the age of 14yrs and girls until the age of 10yrs. Itis also a home for boys between the ages of 5yrs & 14yrs who have been abandoned, orphanedand abused from Jerusalem and the surrounding towns and villages in the Palestinian territories.Bethany, 1½ miles from Jerusalem, was home to Jesus' friends Mary, Martha and Lazarus andwith whom he stayed after he had entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. As we entered Bethany,an area controlled by the Palestinian Authority, the lack of services became apparent. Littereverywhere, abandoned broken down vehicles due to no-one able to obtain insurance, no policeforce, no council services to keep the streets clean, no health service. Life is difficult and formany children the school in Bethany is their lifeline to a better future. The children were waiting for us and were leaning out of the windows as we arrived wavingenthusiastically. The classrooms were bright and cheerful, and it was very clear there was a lotof learning going on. Many of the boys have experienced very difficult home lives, and many arehomeless orphans with nowhere to go but the street. Here children are being given a chance inlife. From classroom to classroom the children entertained us with songs in Arabic and with hugesmiles on their faces. One of the classes sang in English Twinkle twinkle little star and it was ajoy to see how they smiled as they sang and carried out the little actions - we all joined in ofcourse!

Happy children in a place where everyday life is a challenge. Here they are learning, here they are loved, here they have a family, here they learn to trust.

Jeel al Amal is a beacon of light for all the children. Here they are given hope for the future. Thiswas very much in evidence during our visit. Asked if the school takes children of different faithsour guide replied that they do not distinguish between faiths because

'Children all cry in the same language'All children deserve to live in hope for the future and this sums up what the school and orphanageis about and also how the God we believe in is a God in whose image we are all made. Our guidehad been orphaned as a young boy and attended Jeel al Amal and received an education, a home,a family and all the benefits that these things offer. He has returned as a leader and teacher inorder to give other children the hope for the future that turned his life around. It was an emotional visit for us pilgrims but we came away encouraged by the sheer delight thatthese children have for life and how this school gives them so much hope for the future.

HACKTHORN & COLD HANWORTHHACKTHORN C. OF E. PRIMARY SCHOOL

Swimming got off to a flying start this year because so many of our pupils keep up with variousswimming related activities throughout the year. So much so, that Mrs Wass said that heradvanced group was without doubt the best she's ever encountered. Swimming is a hugelyimportant life-skill - literally, although we hope it comes to that for our children, which is why, every summer term, we take the whole school to Gainsborough every week to make sure thateveryone can at least swim a range of strokes over a minimum of 25 metres as well as know howto get themselves safely out of some tricky situations.Of course, at Hackthorn it's not just all about the swimming, but a whole range of skill come intoplay as we team up older and younger pupils so that the older ones can learn the benefits andresponsibilities of looking after someone less experienced than themselves, and the younger onesget a good role model ready for when it's their turn to be in charge in years to come. This in turn creates the wonderful family atmosphere we enjoy at Hackthorn and leads to usgetting some fantastic comments from the external Head Teachers who come to do our peerreviews each year. A couple of quotes from this year's report make us particularly happy -"Children enjoy learning and are proud of their school" and "Children work and learn welltogether. They make good use of one another to support each other's learning."So much goes on at Hackthorn that there is never much room left to give undue attention to 'ToastWeek', other than to congratulate Year 6 on doing their best and maintaining our tradition of notgetting caught up in the media hysteria which seems to plague SATs every year. You can read about it all you like, but there really is no substitute for first-hand experience, andwe're always happy to welcome anyone who wants to find out more about the 'Hackthorn Way'so why not contact the school on 01673 860295 to arrange a visit or to request a School Brochure,or have a look round our website at www.hackthorn.lincs.sch.uk

Your Garden in JuneWith plants and lawns flourishing, the garden tasks in June are ever increasing. Spending moretime in the garden is a great form of exercise, but make sure you do not do too much and wakeup aching the next day! Doing tasks little and often will make the workload more manageable, but hopefully more enjoyable too.Depending on your grass type, lawns will need mowing at least once a week however if adrought is forecast, we recommend cutting grass a little longer than usual to help it withstanddry conditions and less susceptible to weed growth. Many modern mowers have the option toincrease or decrease the mowers to alter how short the grass is cut. We also recommendmowing with caution in shaded areas around trees. These areas will need to be mown at ahigher level as the grass competes with tree roots for water and nutrients and will need an extrahelping hand. If you are looking to overseed or re-seed a bare area, we now stock two brandnew seed mixes that have been developed to be tolerant to shaded areas or in droughts.By now, hopefully we will have seen the last of the late frosts, but if temperatures drop makesure young or tender plants are protected. Hanging baskets should now be developed enoughto be proudly displayed outside for all to enjoy. We are looking forward to returning to the Lincolnshire Show and we hope to see you there -Agrigem will be exhibiting on stand number 4-34A just north of the main ring. This year is aspecial year as it marks 150 years of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society. We will also becelebrating and sharing images of how Agrigem has developed over the year - from trading outof a garage to a multi-million purpose-built warehouse and office space employing over 20employees.For FREE advice from our technical experts please call Agrigem on 01522 246491 or visitwww.agrigem.co.uk

WELTON FAMILY HEALTH CENTRE NEWSDID NOT ATTEND (DNA) - In April, 97% of patients attended the surgery for their appointments. Wewould like to thank these patients for attending or cancelling appointments that they were unable to make sothe slot could be used by another patient. Unfortunately, 85 patients still failed to attend for theirappointments which would have meant an extra 14.5 hours of available appointments.ACUTE ILLNESS CLINIC - Those of you that have attended the Acute Illness Clinic in the last month mayhave observed some slight changes. We have noticed that some days it is extremely busy and other daysmuch quieter. To try and gain some balance we have slightly altered the way that the AIC runs. Now, the AICwill be limited to a number of slots per clinic to enable the GP's and Nurse Practitioners to see (what isnationally considered) a "safe" number of patients. To help patients understand this, above the AI desk wewill be advertising how many slots are available for AIC each day of the week, so that patients can come backon a quieter day or a day with more availability, should they wish. We have only started to trial this from thebeginning of May and will of course, always see any patients that feel they have an urgent need.SIGNPOSTING - In order to enable patients to see the most appropriate clinician or person for their needs, the reception staff have attended some signposting training which gives them the necessary skills to be ableto direct patients to the right appointment. They are now all qualified 'Patient Care Advisors' and will take onthis role with immediate effect. Patients may be directed to appointments with or advice from GP's, AdvancedNurse Practitioners, Practice Nurses, Healthcare Assistants, Phlebotomists, Dispensary, Physio's, ClinicalPharmacists, Social Prescribers etc. The Partners have asked the Patient Care Advisors to ask more questionsof patients to try and direct you appropriately. The telephone message will also be altered to reflect this. Please give them as much information as possible to enable them to book you in with the right person.National statistics show that signposting patients to the most appropriate person can free up GP appointmentsfor those that do need to see a GP and therefore reduce waiting times. We would be very grateful for yoursupport in developing this in the practice.CLINICAL PHARMACIST - We have a clinical pharmacist called Chris Donnan who will be working inthe Practice every Tuesday from this month. He will be able to see patients for medication reviews and helpto deal with queries and paperwork relating to prescriptions. If you are only booking an appointment for amedication review, please ask for an appointment with Chris.TRAVEL VACCINES - If you are planning to travel abroad this summer, please give us at least eight weeks'notice where possible. Some of the more exotic destinations require a complicated schedule of vaccinationswhich takes a lot of nurse time to research and administer. Whilst we will always do our best to fit patientsin, if we do not have enough notice we may not be able to give you your vaccines in time. Please could we remind patients that not all travel vaccines are free on the NHS. Some vaccines, such asrabies, yellow fever and malaria are classed as private vaccines and therefore incur a charge. We have to ordersuch vaccines into the practice and these are non-refundable. Recently we have had some patients refusingto pay for the vaccines, saying they no longer want them or just simply not turning up for the vaccine - thecost of which then has to be absorbed by the practice as we are unable to return them. As a result, we are nowasking patients to pay for thee vaccines prior to us ordering them, which also ensures we have them availablein time for your appointment.WAITING ROOM - One of our Receptionists has been working hard recently to update the notice boardsand information available in the waiting room. We hope this will be much clearer and easier to look at andwe would appreciate any feedback via our 'compliment or concern' forms available in the waiting room.THANK YOU - A big thank you from all the staff for all the cards and thank you gifts we have receivedlately, we are very grateful. In particular, we have one very kind patient that regularly bakes delicious cakesfor us - thank you very much!STAFF TRAINING - The surgery will be closed for staff training from 1pm on Tuesday 18th June until 8amon Wednesday 19th June. Please could we ask that you order any medication with as much notice as possibleto enable us to meet our tight deadlines.

WELTON PATIENT AND DOCTORS ASSOCIATIONA huge thank you to everyone who braved the elements to attend the WeltonMay Day Fair and who came along to the PDA plant stall. We made a totalof £452 45 after the deduction of £15 for table hire which was an excellentresult considering the monsoon which swept through the fair in the afternoon.Thank you also to those who provided plants for us to sell. The entire stallwas stocked from donations for which we are very grateful. Finally regardingthe fair we would like to thank the organisers who worked tirelessly to ensurethe event went ahead THANK YOU!PDA volunteering is a bit like painting the Forth Road Bridge. No sooner isone event over than we start preparations for the next! I am now looking tosource prizes for our Autumn Draw which will be drawn at the AutumnFayre. The tickets will hopefully be available from sometime in June(Incidentally a driver was asked by a patient during the 3rd week in Aprilwhether we had any tickets available so obviously an eagerly awaited event!)I have 5 prizes already but if anyone feels that their contacts or business would be willing to provide a prize, please let me know. If you need an idea of the type of items offered in previous years, please give me a call. Finally a note to all who book PDA transport through the Health Centre. The request comes through to meon a secure database and I then find a driver to undertake the journey and ring the patient back, usually withina few days, with driver name and pick up time. However there are occasions when I need a bit moreinformation than I have had provided. Could I ask that, once having made the request and particularly if theonly contact is a mobile number, could you please ensure that it stays TURNED ON? I have recently hadquite a number of requests where I haven't been able to contact the patient and this is not a satisfactorysituation for anyone. I can't book the transport with insufficient information and the patient won't know whattime to be ready for pick up.Dates for 2019Autumn Fayre - 26th OctoberChristmas Lunch - 6th DecemberIf you require any further information on any of the above don't hesitate to give me a call (862570).

WELTON VILLAGE LIBRARY AND COMMUNITY HUBOur hub event for June gives you the chance to learn how to prepare healthy and deliciousIndian vegetarian food for you and your family. Our own library volunteer Jagu Dhorajiwalawill be demonstrating how you can make a tasty dish from a few relatively inexpensiveingredients that you will then be able to sample. So make a note in your diaries to come alongon Thursday 27th June at 10:00am for this event. Please note that this is not a day that thelibrary is usually open, however we will be using the Manor Park pavilion as normal.Just to also mention that the library offers additional items as well as it's excellent range ofbooks. We do have both photocopying facilities on site together with printing from our publiclap top computers. A number of people use our free WiFi facility to sign onto their emails orutilise search engines and then print items off. We make a small charge for the copying andprinting, 10p for black and white, 50p for colour. We have also just received a range of leaflets detailing Lincolnshire Memories and MemorialTrails which show walking, cycling and driving trails mainly around RAF sites and also a 'tanktrail'. One of the cycling routes starts in Welton and passes ex RAF sites at Faldingworth,Wickenby and Dunholme Lodge. So do call in if these are of interest and see for yourself.
