“Disruption” entered the WBN lexicon in a big way in 2017. The shift towards technology—disruptive or otherwise—must be harnessed to enable WBN members to achieve their future vision and retain a competitive edge. As the largest independent broker network in the world, we are focused on innovative ways to mitigate the effects of the current disruptive landscape.

Disruption creates a break in the established order. In the worlds of insurance and employee benefits, this disruption is being driven by dramatic shifts in demographics, regulations, and technology. The risks are clear. Because of our broad global reach, our network is positioned to understand the reasoning behind the risks:

• A recent Accenture survey showed 93% of chief strategy officers (regardless of industry) indicated that they will likely be disrupted over the next five years, but only 20% felt highly prepared to address it.

• Data from the United Nations and other sources tell us that globally, one in 35 people will be age 65 or older within the next twenty years. Independent contractors will occupy fully half of the workforce by 2020. There are increasing priorities on purpose, values, and diversity in the workplace which ultimately drive the productivity, loyalty, and commitment of recent university graduates.

• Automation will replace assembly line and office workers even as companies require increasing numbers of programmers and other highly skilled digital talent, along with continually upgrading the skills and capabilities of these workers. Executives will need to become more comfortable leading in a digital world—a significant challenge given that many people with the best digital skills are often less experienced than leadership.

The Paris Global Conference (October 2017) showcased a number of discussions on disruptive topics including: building resilient companies, the borderless state of healthcare, emerging risks in a changing global landscape. These sessions were aligned with WBN’s focus on how to capture disruption and create value, including the application of blockchain technology in a multinational insurance context.

A keynote address in Paris focused on “Global Disruptors,” taking a “deep dive” exploration into how these disruptive trends, paired with rapid adoption of AI and other technologies, could lead to the displacement of tens of millions of jobs across the world. Beyond this discussion, our Young Professionals took advantage of an immersion session into the uses of big data at a Carrier Innovation Lab in Paris.

“Successful companies focus not on a digital strategy but a strategy for the digital age,” said Gilles Babinet, an entrepreneur who serves as France’s digital champion before the European Union. His comprehensive message at the Paris conference on big data, artificial intelligence, blockchain, and other aspects of digital transformation was well received and promoted many questions.

At WBN, our goal is to provide our members and their clients with a better understanding of the trends now disrupting the market, utilizing the expertise of our carrier partners and other resources in our network. We are committed to improving skills and knowledge that will bring value to international clients.

ANNUAL REVIEW 2017 · 1

After completing my term as Chairman, I am proud to say that the WBN network is the strongest it’s ever been.

I have been fortunate to work with an active board and a very capable staff, which has allowed me to help provide WBN with leadership, direction, and a positive tone during my tenure as Chairman. Even though we operate in a complex business climate, WBN continued to move forward in 2017.

I’m proud of the growth we’ve seen in the network, the record attendance and robust agendas at our WBN Global Conferences, and a business flow through the members of WBN that now exceeds 5.25 billion USD.

Our carrier partnerships are very strong. The spirit of collaboration and the willingness of our members to take on work for our network is at a high point.

I wish to thank the WBN home office for their significant commitment and hard work to make WBN stronger and better every day. Strategic development, marketing and communications efforts, building a social network presence, developing WBNet, increasing connectivity through the use of the WBN Member Forum, growing the membership base, building relationships with our sponsors, facilitating training courses and the enormuous task of organizing two global conferences are among other on the annual to-do list of the home office. And it is all done with impressive results.

I would also like to thank our extraordinary members for their significant contributions in 2017. As we continue to grow as a network, our members’ commitment to quality service and cooperation remains the same. This is a tradition that has served WBN well throughout WBN’s nearly 30-year history and been a core component to our success as the largest independent broker network in the world.

The network’s specific accomplishments in 2017:

• WBN continues to grow, in terms of members and Associate Members. We have a robust onboarding process to allow our members to quickly integrate into the network. We have also improved WBN’s Corporate documents to clarify producing and servicing member roles & responsibilities and compensation arrangements.

• Our WBN Global Conferences in New York and Paris each drew more than 300 attendees, and featured more technical sessions, outside speakers (especially on the client side), and ample time for business development.

• With the cooperation of MarshBerry, we are building WBN Global Consulting as a key member resource and network revenue stream. We launched Peer Group 1 at our New York Global Conference in the spring and continued the evolution of the Peer Groups at our fall Paris Global Conference. Michel Schaft was retained to focus on organizing and educating members on the value proposition of this Peer Group process.

• Carriers and sponsors are growing with us. Our relationships with them are more strategic, operate at the most senior levels, and contribute significant thought-leadership for our Global Conferences, customized training sessions, and to support our Young Professionals.

It has been my honor to serve as WBN’s 15th Chairman. I’m looking forward to another productive year with Jim Watt as my successor. Jim is our first Chairman to come from an employee benefits background, reflecting both the importance of EB to our network and the outstanding accomplishments of his career.

Best regards,

To WBN Members, Associate Members, Clients, Insurer Partners, and Friends:

2 · WORLDWIDE BROKER NETWORK

MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Thank you for your support and contributions in 2017. WBN enjoyed its fifth consecutive year of growth to remain the largest global network of independent insurance brokers and employee benefits consultants. WBN has strengthened its market position, collaborative tools, technology, training, and Global Conference experiences.

WBN’s continued focus and commitment in 2017 was maintaining sustainable growth by attracting superior, market-leading independent brokers to our network; collectively meeting the challenges of a volatile global business climate; and strengthening the organization’s foundations in preparing to celebrate our 30th anniversary in 2019.

Each of these efforts is motivated by the overriding goal of helping WBN members write and retain international business.

MEMBERSHIP EXPANSION

In 2017, we welcomed the following new members to the network:

• Associated Insurance Brokers in Cairo, Egypt

• Associated Insurance Consultants in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, UAE

• GBS Benefits Inc. in Salt Lake City, Utah

• Insure Direct in Qatar

• KMRD in Warminster, Pennsylvania

• KSG BROKER in Croatia

• Lurse in Frankfurt, Germany

• Marnix Insurance Brokers in Tokyo, Japan

• Millennium Insurance Brokers in Dubai, UAE

• Pacific Prime Insurance Brokers in Hong Kong

The recruitment of these members in 2017 increased our global footprint, bringing additional specialized product knowledge and industry expertise.

We were pleased to also welcome three new Associate Members. Associate Members support the WBN

network with specialized services including legal advice, benchmarking, research, and technology. Our new Associate Members are:

• Alternative Risk Management (ARM), captive management, Guernsey

• Axco Insurance Information Services, London, UK

• MSM Loss Management, Malvern, Australia

DISRUPTIVE FORCES AND THE INSURANCE LANDSCAPE

WBN’s insurance partners historically have contributed thought leadership for our members and our industry. We need look no further than these partners to gain important insights on the volatility of our business landscape and understanding the disruptive trends that are shaping how we do business.

We spoke often in 2017 of the technology disruptors to our business:

• Digitalization

• Artificial Intelligence

• Blockchain

• Big Data

Fully grasping each of these is a daunting task, but WBN has been focused on how these are affecting clients’ needs, demands, and decision-making. Providing members with consultative tools for meeting these challenges and creating unique value propositions it what WBN was built upon.

WBN has also worked to empower its members to fully understand and deal with the impact of regulatory changes that have global repercussions. These challenges differ from country to country. Some, like the onset of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)—one of the most important changes in data privacy regulation in 20 years—will have a far-reaching impact on all facets of the insurance industry.

To WBN Members, Associate Members, Clients and Sponsoring Carriers:

STRENGTHENING WBN’S STRUCTURE ON THE EVE OF OUR 30TH ANNIVERSARY

My focus for 2018 is the achievement of WBN’s short-term and long-term objectives and continuing to build our organizational vibrancy—all while taking steps for WBN’s next 30 years to thrive. I do so mindful of the Core Values that have sustained the organization—collaboration and professionalism above all.

WBN’s Global Conferences continue to attract strong participation from members, carriers and clients. Our 2017 Global Conferences in New York and Paris represented a high point for these gatherings, each attracting more than 300 participants and providing over 100 individual sessions. Our European regional conference held in Edinburgh, Scotland had a record turnout with over 100 members attending. Our conferences cover topics including cybersecurity, emerging/regional multinationals, and employee health and wellness programs. The increase in client participation during Global Conferences offers a unique opportunity for clients to spend quality time with producing and servicing members, and to collaborate on business development.

WBN’s Young Professionals Group has seen significant growth in 2017, and now exceeds 125 members from all over the globe. The YPs represent the next generation of professionals at WBN member firms and continue to play an increasingly important role in the WBN network.

I’m very proud of the work we did together in 2017 and want to thank two colleagues who have been both leaders in the WBN network and personal mentors to me, Daniel de Swaan (Chairman) and Bruce Basso (Chairman Emeritus). I’m looking forward to working with Jim Watt, our new Chairman. As our first leader from an employee benefits background, Jim will bring important new perspectives and leadership to our organization as we plan to celebrate our 30-year anniversary in 2019.

Our April, 2017 global conference in New York opened with welcoming remarks from WBN Speaker Series leader, Maurice “Hank” Greenberg, Chairman, Starr Companies (above left), and The Digital Revolution: Challenges for the Insurance Industry with Gilles Babinet, French Digital Champion, during our Paris Global Conference in October, 2017 (above right).

It has been my pleasure to be with WBN for two years, serving as your European Consultant. As of January 1, 2018, I am your Global Property & Casualty Consultant, located in London. Thank you for all your support and for your participation; it is an honor to have the opportunity to work with you.

In our 2016 Annual Review, I set forth a number of goals for 2017, including:

• Increased involvement for the European Region and its Steering Committee

• Expanding international business development training in both Europe and the U.S.

• Completing the Adequate Compensation and Scope of Services documents, and

• Additional training sessions were offered at the two Global Conferences in New York and Paris

I’m happy to report that we attained—and surpassed— these goals.

Over the last year we have:

• Offered International Business Development Training for over 500 WBN professionals

• Effectively utilized the European Steering Committee to work on carrier, compliance and business development relationships and opportunities. We have most recently added Marek Kalbac of Renomia to the committee, who is replacing Eva Madsen of Ensure. We thank Eva for her participation and support.

• Provided focus and strategic engagement among our European members and our sponsoring carriers—AIG, Zurich, CNA, AXA, and Lloyd’s—offering mutual opportunities, education, and assistance

• Conducted additional UNIWORLD Online training to help promote international business development

With my expanded role at WBN, my initiatives will be global in nature:

• International Business Development Training on all continents

• Assisting with business development opportunities working with WBN members who have not traditionally focused on developing their teams’ international opportunities

• Running both the European and the US and Canada Steering Committees

• Helping provide WBN members with Sponsoring Carrier training sessions on high-priority issues such as GDPR, Cyber, Lloyds Market and international program tool capabilities; these opportunities will continue throughout 2018

• Working with our Premier P&C Sponsors to help focus on specific business opportunities and strategic engagement with our members

Writing international business requires education and guidance. WBN offers a comprehensive suite of services to help drive new business. I look forward to working with you and assisting with your multinational needs.

EMPLOYEE BENEFITS

ANNUAL REVIEW 2017 · 5

WBN continued to grow its EB market share through the increasing number of new business wins across the network. Much of this success is attributed to WBN P&C members actively engaged in cross-selling to EB clients. Sample success stories include: ABD (San Francisco, California); Andrea Scagliarini (Italy); Ascende/EPIC (Houston, Texas); Honan (Australia/New Zealand/Singapore); and IMA (Denver, Colorado).

In addition, the EB track sessions continue to evolve based upon member feedback and content requests.

• Our members enjoyed one-on-one “speed dating” sessions with our carrier sponsors in New York and Paris. These sessions allowed a direct exchange of ideas on how to work together on business development opportunities.

• The member Country Updates continue to be a highlight for all WBN EB members to learn about important legislative updates and key changes within a specific member’s EB practice

• One of the key sessions is Sales and Client Service Best Practices where WBN members share success stories about international accounts

Overall, our members enjoy spending time together at the Global Conferences to discuss their mutual clients, attend producer/servicing roundtables, strategize about new business opportunities and how best to manage their global benefits clients.

KEY OBJECTIVES IN 2017

• To increase membership in key locations. In 2017 WBN added the following EB members:

– Lurse – Germany – Pacific Prime – Hong Kong – GBS Benefits – Salt Lake City, Utah

• We gathered over 50 responses from WBN members to capture detailed information about our members’ local EB capabilities and services, and will continue to expand this effort in 2018

• To develop an EB contact list of WBN members housed on the WBN website. This was accomplished in early 2017, but remains a fluid document with constant updates as changes occur with our members.

• To increase and expand carrier sponsorship for EB. WBN continued to develop long term strategic alliances by expanding sponsorships with key insurance carriers. 2017 sponsors included:

– AIG– AXA– Zurich– Generali– GeoBlue– United Healthcare Global– Workplace Options

• To promote WBN members and the network through our NEW subscription with Global Benefits Vision:

– Interview of LeAnne Stefl, Director of Employee Benefits, GBV (October)

– WBN Country Series – Tim Witchell, HUB International (December)

• Promote WBN Technology tools with members:

– WBN Website – promoted EB through the members Forum and Resource tab on the members site

– Uniworld – provided training to EB members through site visits and global conferences on how to use the tool for prospecting

– AXCO – provided training to EB members, showcasing case studies and how to use the various reports for prospects and clients

– WBNet 3.0 – The EB IT Technology committee revamped the EB forms and created a basic set of reports to be used with clients

I’m looking forward to assisting you with your international Employee Benefits needs.

TECHNOLOGY

6 · WORLDWIDE BROKER NETWORK

After a little more than a year since launching our new website, WBNGlobal.com, it is encouraging to see our site regularly attracting more than 3,000 visitors monthly. We’ve seen significant growth in Member Forum usage, with numerous business inquiries, requests, news, announcements and thought leadership articles submitted each week by members, Associate Members and sponsoring carriers.

Other resources found on the members’ side of the website include a map-based member search featuring up-to-date fact sheets for every WBN member and Associate Member, important information about legal and compliance topics such as the E.U. General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and links to useful tools such as UNIWORLD, WBNet, and AXCO.

WBNet 3.0…powered by Origami Risk continues to be an important tool for our members, enabling producing brokers to invite their servicing partners all over the world to input and upload property & casualty insurance and employee benefits policies for their multinational clients in a secure, online management system. WBNet is currently being used to track in excess of 12,000 policies in over 100 countries for more than 600 of our members’ multinational clients.

Working with the WBN Technology Committee, comprised of representatives from member firms that have both property & casualty and employee benefits focuses, WBN has enhanced the information-capturing and reporting capabilities of WBNet, with features such as the importing/exporting of policy and/or claims data, charts that incorporate currency conversion and new reports and dashboards we designed specifically for our employee benefits members.

WBN is well positioned to continue offering our members helpful tools to assist them in servicing their global clients. I look forward to working with our members to win and retain business utilizing our technology tools.

The YP Group, founded in 2013, is comprised of international executives under the age of 35 who represent the next generation of leaders in their respective firms and the WBN network. The YP Group uniquely works together to drive business activity and exchange between member firms. The YP Group’s objectives include attracting and retaining talent, educational and thought leadership offerings, fostering innovation within WBN, and providing valuable assistance to WBN strategic initiatives.

The semi-annual global conferences in New York and Paris provided breakout sessions dedicated to issues important to the YP demographic, including:

• International Programs Training Session

• Developing a World Class Global Risk Program

• Introduction to Innovation Lab

• The Global Claims Proposition: Maximizing the Value

• Young Professionals Panel Discussion

The group has seen significant growth this year, now exceeding 125 members from all over the globe, up from 80 in 2016.

In 2018, the Group will continue to develop a rotational leadership chair to gain insight from all global regions; starting this process by having added two vice-chairs in 2017, Warren Lai, AFL/UK and Steve Pappas, Honan/Australia. The YP Group will continue to focus in 2018 and beyond to grow the group and attract more members to attend conferences and participate in YP-specific projects.

We are pleased with the group’s accomplishments to date and look forward to further success in 2018. We want to thank the YP members who are increasingly involved in the WBN network.

MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS WBN 2017 SPONSORS

In 2017, WBN’s Marketing Communications team, working in conjunction with the Marketing Communications Steering Committee, revamped a number of critical WBN marketing and training tools, pushed out major news and forged new media partnerships, and significantly expanded the network’s social media.

Specifically, we:

• Revamped WBN’s “Global Rankings” advertisement and created a customizable template for individual members

• Significantly updated and redesigned WBN “At A Glance”

• Improved our press releases distribution to include more regional and online insurance and EB outlets

• Created a media partnership with Global Benefits Vision for EB coverage and continued our work with Commercial Risk Europe

• Distributed our “WBN in 100 Seconds” video, also customizable for individual members

• Compiled numerous client testimonials to highlight the increasing role of client input at our Global Conferences; many were featured at our Paris Global Conference

• Provided remarks and communications support for the Paris Global Conference, CIAB, and FERMA

It was also WBN’s most successful year ever for social media, with increased engagement on Linkedin, Twitter, and Facebook, as well as record traffic to the WBN Member Forum. Traffic will continue to grow dramatically in 2018, but in 2017 we saw:

• Twitter: 55,000 impressions and a following of more than 300 (WBN had no Twitter activity in 2016)

• LinkedIn: added 400 followers and 200,000+ views

WBN’s most powerful marketing and communications resource remains our individual members, who provide invaluable advice to our staff and to each other. Armed with these resources, WBN should reach an ever-widening audience of clients, prospects, and thought leaders in 2018.
