In 2017, the Arts

Alliance of Greater Bloomington

(AAGB) saw great growth in community part-

nerships and in promoting members and their work.

Last summer, we reached out to leaders in the Bloomington

arts community and asked them to be part of an advisory

council. We received a resounding ‘yes’ from all the folks

we contacted, and thanks to invaluable arts patron and

board member Ted Jones, we were able to host our first

combined meeting between our board members and advisory council members. The evening was filled with insight and ideas.

As a result of this outreach, local businessman and longtime arts patron Tom Gallagher not only joined our advisory council , but

he generously offered gallery space downtown on the square for us to put together member shows on a monthly basis. As of

this report, and thanks to the incredible work of our board member and VP Jo-

anne Shank, we have successfully mounted four shows: Wyatt LeGrand, Kurt

Larsen, James Tracy, and Patricia Cole. We have also created a window display

of member artwork outside of Thomas Gallery at 107 N. College, plus we have

created exciting events to drive the public in to see these visual arts shows—

including free demos from the artists, poetry readings and dance parties! We

are happy to be collaborating with Tom to plan shows through the end of 2018;

if you are interested in being part of a show or have any ideas for shows or

events, please share them with us!

Other AAGB highlights of 2017:

AAGB TREASURER’S REPORT FOR 2017 Submitted by Jeffrey Huntsman, Treasurer

As before, our fiscal condition reflects a stable condition, with modest growth (11%). I say “modest” here—most of us would be ecstatic if our bank accounts grew by 11%--because we have had very few expenses over the past year. Our only reliable source of income is the dues our members give, with a few gifts (including those from your board members), so we are careful with your money. In the near future, however, we expect to have significant new expenses for the new website under development, so our bal-ance represents a prudent en-cumbrance. Your board carefully considers the value of expendi-tures, all of which are centered on promoting our members first and the Arts Alliance in general. One way that we do this is through memberships with or-ganizations such as Chamber of

Commerce, which provides networking opportunities to connect more businesses with the arts. The required legal filings (e.g., the State Business Entity report and the Federal 990 form) were filed as required. In 2017 we had our first significant use of our then-new program by which we offer a kind of umbrella for organizations to use our 501(c)(3) status to solicit donations for which the donor could then claim a charitable deduction. That project was to support the well-established Open Studios Tour (BOST) and it went very well, as expected. We remain committed to this program and contin-ue to accept applications. If any members of the community are interested in learning more about how it works, we are available for discussion. Monthly fiscal and membership income reports are available, should you want to see them. And of course, our monthly board

meetings are always open.

AAGB PLANS FOR 2018!

Continue our collaboration with Tom Gallagher / Thomas Gallery to showcase the work of local visual artists.

Throw a Murder-mystery Party in April to raise funds and awareness for the AAGB

Hire a part-time marketing/community engagement specialist to support the Alliance and its members

Create and promote the “AAGB Artists Fund” to ensure local businesses are able to pay local performers a livable wage

With the support of local arts patrons Otto and Donna Ray, the Arts Alliance of Greater Bloomington has created an Artists Fund to bring high quality arts programs to small businesses that are dedicated to providing stages and spaces for artists to share their work. How it works: Local patrons will make donations to the Arts Alliance, which will then pay artists directly after their show is over. The venue will choose artists / entertainment from the Arts Alliance Directory, a FREE service offered by the AAGB and located at www.bloomingtonarts.org. The money from the Fund may only be used to pay artists and booking agents for their services. A special request may be made for funds to be used to update the performance / art space, and/or for equip-ment needed to put on quality shows.

Multimedia has so many possibilities and is partly why I am intrigued to be a member of the Arts Alliance team. I consider myself primarily a Visual Artist, but tend to spend too much time sitting focused on projects, and am looking forward to getting back into creative movement. As Dance Rep for the AAGB, I want to help promote the many different dance organizations in town and facilitate communication amongst the groups as is beneficial.”
