Every three years, the Foundaon Board of Directors takes a deep look at the needs of the field. In 2017, we invited our two sister sociees - the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitaon and the Associaon of Aca-demic Physiatrists – to parcipate in this strategic planning process. We also solicited input from you, the donors who make everything we do possible. As a result, we revised and sharpened our mission statement to “Elevang phys-iatry to serve others.” This mission reflects my own career-long perspecve that physiatry has a tremendous amount to contribute to people with disabilies and the healthcare system as a whole - but that our ability to maximally con-tribute depends on the stature and visibility of our field.

The Foundaon has long been invesng in research career development - one of the key strategies for elevang our field in medical schools and healthcare systems. Over the past year, the Board has been considering addional new and varied ways to use the Foundaon’s resources to support advancement of clinical and educaonal leaders in our field.

We also took a crical look at our programs and structure; we’ve consolidated some of our commiees to increase our efficiency. We recognize that the grants we offer are rarely large enough to make overnight advances toward achieving our mission to “elevate the field.” Rather, these grants are designed to provide a launching pad for recipients to go on to subsequent projects that are more am-bious and will have a larger impact. Accordingly, the Foundaon’s Awards and Grants Commiee is in the process of modifying the grant applicaons and review criteria to make sure we look carefully at the likelihood of achieving a next step. By funding new invesgators in this manner, we build the capacity of the field and the careers of promising young physiatrists. While the results are not always im-mediate, the long-term cumulave impact on the field is profound.

Stay tuned for new program iniaves as we connue to refine our strategic plan to beer serve the field of PM&R, and maximize the impact of every dollar you donate.

ADVANCING PHYSIATRIC SCIENCE

“The Midcareer grant award enabled me to start a new line of

invesgaon regarding the differenal effect of hormonal con-

tracepves on the material properes of ligaments and ten-

don. This funding is yielding crical preliminary data which will

lead to compeve applicaons for addional grants, change the

widely held belief that hormones are non-modifiable risk factors,

and may ulmately reveal an injury prevenon strategy for

female athletes.”- Dr. Ellen Casey

BUILDING RESEARCH CAPACITY

“Winning the Nadler grant has been a key factor in ramping up our research this year. We hired a research assistant to coordinate the study and recruit parcipants, and hired a pharmacist to procure and compound the drug. The grant also allowed us to “lever-age” a lot of in kind support from our doc-tors, who have started referring paents to the study and spreading the word about the study through their networks. And of course, we have started hearing back from some grateful paents who couldn’t have accessed this treatment otherwise.”

AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES FUND (ADF)The ADF has harnessed volunteer experse, partnered with exisng resources and aracted new sources of financial support to help physiatrists serve their paents more effecvely. The ADF makes it easy to access free and reliable online resources to capitalize on principles our specialty has long embraced: “exercise is medicine”. Our Rx for Exercise project has filled requests from nearly 1,000 physiatrists for free exercise prescripon pads and offers a free app for Apple and Android. In 2017 the ADF received funding through both the Naonal Center for Health, Physical Acvity and Disability and the Craig H. Neilsen Foundaon to expand on our in-novave program.

NEW CANCER REHAB RESEARCH FUNDThe need to address the multude of funconal complica-ons of cancer and its treatment for the more than 15.5 million Americans cancer survivors is widely recognized. The Foundaon organized a Cancer Rehabilitaon Research Fund to support physiatric cancer rehab outcomes and efficacy re-search so physiatry can take the lead in the rehabilitaon of this paent populaon. Task Force co-chairs Drs. Gail Gam-ble and Michael Stubblefield (pictured at right) have made a very generous donaon and pledge to launch the fund. If you know of a grateful paent or corporaon who might be interested in providing financial support of this effort, please contact Phyllis Anderson at 847-737-6062 or panderson@foundaonforpmr.org.

MOLNAR PEDIATRIC PM&R LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD The 2017 Gabriella Molnar Pediatric PM&R Lifeme Achievement Award was presented to Stephen Noll, MD (pictured at right), who served as Medical Director of the PM&R Program, Director of the Pediatric Rehab Program, and member of the Pediatric Physicians Commiee at Mayo Clinic for over a de-cade. He was also a member of the task force that draed the proposal to the ABPMR and ABMS to formally establish the subspecialty of PM&R. This award is given in memory of Dr. Molnar, a pioneer in the field of pediatric PM&R. PMR JOURNAL BEST RESEARCH PAPER AWARDEach year, the Foundaon for PM&R partners with the PMR journal to recognize one outstand-ing research paper. The 2017 award was given to Dr. Kentaro Onishi (pictured at right receiving the award from journal editor Stuart Weinstein, MD) and co-authors for “Human Adipose-derived

PRESIDENTS FUND SUPPORTS PAL BREAKFASTParcipants in the Program for Academic Leadership (PAL) had the opportunity to meet with seven illustrious leaders in the field (Drs. Randy Braddom, Joel DeLisa, Bruce Gans, John King, John Melvin, Barry Smith and John Whyte) during a mentoring breakfast (pictured below). The Foundaon’s Presidents Fund provided funding for this event, which offered parcipants the op-portunity for open dialogue on a number of predetermined topics designed to supplement their formal curriculum. One of the parcipants said: ““[It was a ] great opportunity to get their wis-dom and perspecve, and I think great for them to see that the younger generaon (us) really wants to do great things.” Thank you to all our Presidents Fund donors who made this possible!

SPEAKERS BUREAU NOW OFFEREDIn 2012, Dr. Randy Braddom (pictured at right) went on his “First Farewell Tour” – serving as a vising professor for numerous PM&R programs across the country, and donang his speaking fees to the Foundaon. He raised a total of $25,000! In 2017, Dr. Braddom launched his “Second Farewell Tour”, and invited some illustrious friends to join him. Drs. Bruce Becker, Dexanne Clohan, Lynn Gerber and John Whyte are also available to en-hance your instuon’s educaonal program as vising professors, and all honoraria will be donated to support physiatric research through the Foundaon for PM&R.
