At the public meeting of the Pennsbury
Board of School Directors held on March
9, 2017, the Board approved the
appointment of Maj. (Retired) James G.
MacEachern, Jr. to become the first
Senior Aerospace Science Instructor (SASI) at Pennsbury
High School. Working in tandem with PHS Co-Principals
Reggie Meadows and Lisa Becker, Maj. MacEachern will
lead the implementation of a new Air Force Junior ROTC
student program beginning with the 2017-2018 school
year.
“We took a big step in anchoring the Air Force JROTC
program here in the Pennsbury School District,” said
Superintendent Dr. William J. Gretzula at the Board
meeting. “Major MacEachern is a lifelong learner with 25
years of service in the Air Force, and we welcome him to
our community. He has tremendous experience and
models passion for the program and care for the
students.”
The appointee currently serves as the SASI at the
Swenson Arts & Technology High School in Philadelphia,
where he has worked since 2014. He holds a Master of
Science degree in Administration from Central Michigan
University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business
from the University of Maryland. Maj. MacEachern is
also a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Senior and Junior
ROTC Academic Instructor Schools in Montgomery, AL.
He is currently working toward his Master’s degree in
Education at West Chester University.
Addressing the School Board after he was appointed on
Thursday evening, Maj. MacEachern said, “It is an honor
to be selected as the first SASI at Pennsbury High School.
“This is a great program that allows students to do things
that are very different. Sometimes students attending a
school this large don’t always fit in. There’s a lot of
camaraderie in a program like this, creating a family
within a family. Our curriculum is world class. The
students really love it.”
PHS Adding Air Force Junior ROTC Student Program
The idea of introducing a JROTC program at the high
school level was inspired by School Director, John
Palmer, who advocated for the initial research of
similar programs in the Philadelphia area. With full
Board approval, former Pennsbury Assistant
Superintendent, Dr. Elliott Lewis, led the exploratory
phase and the formal application to the U.S. Air Force
for acceptance prior to his retirement from
Pennsbury. Thanks to the continuing efforts of current
Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Donna Dunar, the Air
Force granted the School District a unit in 2016 for
start-up in the fall of 2017.
"The administration is very pleased to be
implementing the Air Force JROTC program for the
2017- 2018 school year,” said PHS East Principal,
Reggie Meadows. “After a long search we feel that
Major MacEachern is the perfect candidate to start
this program at Pennsbury High School. He comes to
us with a background in leading ROTC and JROTC
programs, and we feel that this program will hit the
ground running. We eagerly look forward to the many
good things that will be brought to Pennsbury High
School and the Pennsbury community as a result of
this program."
Principal Reggie Meadows (left) greeted the newly-hired Senior Aerospace Science Instructor, Maj. (Retired) James G. MacEachern, Jr., who will lead the new Air Force JROTC program for Pennsbury.
Students in Jess Perfetto's Prototyping class were

PHS recently held its first International Fashion Show,
sponsored by the Multi-Cultural Youth Leaders’ Club
(MCYL), with the help of Pennsbury’s chapter of NSBE
(National Society of Black Engineers.) The narrator for the
event was Mrs. Terry Hodges, a member of the PTO.
“We had a great turnout for our first fashion show, and
the models had great outfits that were literally from all
corners of the world,” says John Sanders, Applied
Engineering and Technology Education teacher, as well as
the MCYL and NSBE advisor. “There were outfits that
represented parts of Asia, Africa, India, the West Indies,
Latin America, Europe, and of course, the United States.
Our objective was not just to have fun, but to also give
students a chance to display the pride of their heritage,
for all to see. When students have a chance to interact
with each other, they realize that they have more
similarities than differences.”

Congratulations to the PHS Young Engineers Team, who
secured first place in the Southeastern Pennsylvania
Physics Olympics League for the first time in school
history! In a season full of firsts, all members of the team
worked together to shatter records and dominate events.
Through three separate meets, Pennsbury held a lead
against seven other schools in a very tight race. Coached
by physics teacher Douglas Macauley, the team saved
their best performance for last, placing first in both heats
of the highly anticipated, but equally important, “physics
relay” event. Individual medalists throughout the season
included Sujit Hiremath, Jeffrey Cragin, Saloni Shah, and
Sima Noorani. In addition, officers Ninad Mahajan, Paul

Katia Barricklow Wins National Honors at the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards
PHS Junior Katia Barricklow recently won
national honors from the Scholastic Art and
Writing Awards, the longest-running and
most prestigious recognition program for
creative teens in the United States. A record-breaking
330,000 works of art and writing were submitted by
students in grades 7–12 to this year’s contest. Katia
won two silver medals for photography and journalism,
placing her within the top 1% of all submissions
nationally.
Katia, who writes for the Courier-Times “Reality”
section, also won the top prize in journalism in the
Philadelphia metro region for the second year in a row
for an article about her love of photography, which
appeared in the
newspaper last
spring. Her Gold
Key award
winning article,
“Moving Beyond
the Selfie: Finding
‘Flow’ With
Photography,” was named an “American Voices”
nominee. An American voices nomination is a best in
show distinction; only five writing entries, across all
categories, were selected for this special honor.
Katia won her first Gold Key Award for photography for
“Distant Fog,” an atmospheric winter shot of the
Delaware River. Katia is on the leadership team that
directs the activities of the PHS photography club, run
by art teacher Abigail Cramer.
Other regional Scholastic honors Katia gleaned this year
include four Silver Key Awards for photography and
three Silver Key Awards for a critical essay, a short story
and a memoir. The last two pieces, “Craters,” and
“Four Things You Need To Know About Old People,”
were written in a PHS creative writing course that Katia
took with one of her favorite teachers, Gregory
Zambrycki, when she was a sophomore.
Congratulations Katia!

“The Wolf in Eye,” a pastel drawing by PHS junior
Ally Atkinson, is included in a county-wide art
show at the Bucks County Intermediate Unit #22 in
Doylestown. Attending a reception to honor those
students whose works were exhibited together
were Superintendent Dr. William J. Gretzula,
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Donna Dunar, and Art
Curriculum Coordinator, Ruth Anne Schultz. Ally
described her striking work this way: “Inside, there
is a constant fight between two wolves. One is
purity, light, honesty, kindness, love, and hope.
The other wolf is darkness, evil, envy, sorry, regret,
and hate. Which wolf will win? Whichever one
you choose to feed.” Curtis May was Ally’s PHS art
teacher at the time she created “The Wolf in Eye.”
The work was chosen for the county exhibit, which
will remain on display for a year, by Ms. Schultz at
the District Art Show last May. “The piece
captured my eye out of the thousands of pieces on
display at Pennsbury’s art show last year,” said Ms.
Schultz. At the conclusion of the BCIU exhibit, the
piece will be added to the Superintendent’s
permanent collection in the Central Administration
building.

compilation of poems from finalists ad place winners,”
added Mr. Demore.
Following is the poem by Malloi that was selected as a
finalist in the contest.
“Fungus” by Malloi Smith
Waves of sovereignty crash onto the surface of rich black soil. The sheer curtains of flesh emit envy in cells of those who inhabit soft skulls. The intelligence of the wanted soul luminous in power. That light of unapologetic knowledge is poached for its’ strong exterior. The dedication of the urning is just as obtainable within an exchange of bitter pearls and experience. The plague of soft skulls lock a knowledgeable soul for having exposure to the black curve of the moon. A side of the crescent that is a discovery of enlightenment for one that craves to learn. However, it remains static to the misfortune of ignorance. The soft skulls rattle nefariously while the unsuspecting & pretty rip of mastery in the wanted souls’ flesh. However, the dirt that the wanted soul lies in, trembles in an undying vengeance to the sensitivity of shallow creativity.
Jenna Dzelzgalvis Recognized by YWCA for Community Service PHS School Counselor Justine
McEachern is pleased to report that
senior Jenna Dzelzgalvis
represented Pennsbury as one of 15
area high school students honored
during the YWCA Bucks County Teen
Volunteer of the Year Award
reception and dinner. “These young
adults have contributed many hours
of service to our community,” said Ms. McEachern. “It
was a very nice evening celebrating these students and
their families!”
In order to be nominated, a student must have had a
demonstrated impact on the lives of others. He/she
must be making a significant difference through
volunteer work, persistence of effort/willingness to
volunteer over a period of time, and show a diversity f
volunteer work for both the community and school they
attend. Congratulations Jenna!
On Monday, May 29, Memorial Day will be
celebrated. It is a national day of remembrance
and a national holiday. At this time each year,
PHS rededicates the Wall of Honor to those who
have died in service to our nation.
The freshman class were offered the opportunity
to add the names of relatives to the Wall. The
Wall is located in the West Building, and it pays
respect to the men and women of the armed
services who have paid the ultimate price. The
Wall of Honor is a visual tribute to their sacrifice.
It serves to remind all of our students of the
gratitude of all Americans.
Names of family members (great-grandfather,
grandfather, aunt, uncle, brother or sister) who
were killed or missing in action in any war or
military campaign fought by the United States of
America will be added to this year’s wall.
Families were invited as we remembered the
new honorees at a ceremony on Friday, May 26.

PA passed legislation effective July 1, 2012 requiring all
student-athletes to receive concussion and head injury
information prior to the start of their season.
Additionally, most student-athletes will also be tested
using Impact. This will be a baseline test to be used if the
athlete sustains a head injury during the season. We have
been using this test for the past two years and it will be
expanded this year. We have partnered with St. Mary
Hospital and Bucks County IU to provide a PowerPoint
presentation and help administer the Impact testing.
All prospective Fall athletes and all coaches are required
to report to Keller Hall on Wednesday, August 9 at
11:30 am.
At the conclusion of the presentation, all football players
(incoming grades 9-12) will take the Impact test in the
West library. Testing takes about 30-45 minutes and
should be done no later than 2:00 pm.
Parents are recommended to attend and the community
is invited to attend this presentation.

The “Word” from your School Library!
As the end of the school year approaches, many
students still have books outstanding and/or
fines. Please make sure students return all
materials before the end of the year.
Obligations will be issued for all materials not
returned and unpaid fines.
Students are welcome to stop in the library any
time to see if they have any library obligations.
Library books can be returned to either library,
however, all FINES must be paid to the
appropriate library.
Thank you in advance for your assistance!
Did you know that PHS has a program to help high school
