Pine View Public School Darlene Root, Principal (613) 687-2519 April Newsletter Principals Message Over the school year, the staff at Pine View has been involved in many workshops and seminars. The staff are always looking for ways to help your children learn to problem solve and to show what they know. Some of the workshops staff have been involved include: card and dice games, using ipads for documenting student and teacher work; using, combining and smashing apps; becoming familiar with Google and Google apps that can be used for individual and collaborative work; knowledge building and knowledge forums as a method to develop our understanding of the world and to be able to share what we know. It is our objective and our hope that in bringing this knowledge back to the classroom and using these tools and understandings with students, our students will become more effective communicators as well as to instil a desire to be lifelong learners. AROUND THE SCHOOL

Mrs. McIver - The Kindergartens are doing research. As a class we went on-line to investigate and view a photo of the large totem pole at Riverside Park in Pembroke. We did this as one of the students had built a structure that reminded me of a totem pole. Since that student didn’t know what a totem pole was, we decided to research the one at Riverside Park on-line. Then we came across a newspaper article (from the Pembroke Observer) stating that it was rotting and in need of repair. That opened up an entire new discussion about newspapers, why the totem pole was rotting and the consequences of what could happen if it wasn’t repaired. Ms. Loevenmark's class continue to work on their Book Creator books on the ipads. Next steps include narrating each book by recording student voices on each page. We culminated our study of symmetry with snap cube designs and a Smart Board sorting game. We are now focusing on telling time and solving time problems. How long does it take you to eat supper? Make your estimate and then time yourself to see how close your estimate was. Students have nearly finished replying to our latest pen pal letters. Our Admaston Public School friends mailed us lovely Valentine cards and we will be sending St. Patrick's Day greetings to them!

Mrs. Bennett's Grade 3/4 Class: Recently we have been using the iPads to create a "popplet" for our science unit. The grade 3s went around the school to take pictures of items that show a force which is caused by movement. The grade 4s traveled around the school to find items that provide light and sound in our everyday environment. Once the students were done, they used the "popplet" app to display their items found. Check out our twitter account to see us using the "popplet" app! @MrsBPineview Mrs. Wasmund -The Grade 7 & 8s have been busy getting ready for the upcoming Badminton season. We are in the process of picking our Grade 7 and Grade 8 Team. In addition, the students are getting ready for Pine View's Annual Science Fair which is on March 31 in the Gym. In Language we are writing poetry and learning about various "Signposts" that help us comprehend what we are reading and allow us to dig deeper into what we read. In Math we are exploring the world of integers. Mrs. Saar - The 3s and 4s have been working hard at learning about money, strong and stable structures and pulleys and gears. These units are coming to an end and we are moving onto new things! The grade 3s will be studying plants and the grade 4s will be taking a look at different habitats next. We continue to work hard and learn together as a group. Keep up the good work! Mrs. Reid-Stashick - Recently in Grades 1 and 2 we have been investigating the 3 states of matter (Solids, Liquids and Gases). The children worked in small groups to brainstorm the things that could fit in each category. We are in the process of combining all of our thinking into master lists for each. In keeping with this we have combined Science and Math in some neat estimating activities involving different glasses of water and pennies. Ask your child what we learned. Our big buddies from Grades 5 and 6 are now helping us to design and construct boats using recycled materials. The boats have to be able to hold the mass of a roll of pennies without sinking. Today was the initial design process, next Day 5 (Tuesday, April 7th) will be the construction day and the third meeting day will be the testing of our designs. It looks like fun and a great opportunity for learning. Mme Bishop - French : Both grade 3/4 classes will be doing their last social studies unit in French. Grade 3 will be studying Communities in Canada, 1780-1850 and Grade 4 will be studying Early Societies, 3000 BCE-1500 CE. They are part of a pilot project with the Renfrew County District School Board to implement e-Portfolio and Social Studies.

Mr. Gorr - The primary classes are busy making Signs of Spring art. Keep your eyes peeled for new displays in the hallways soon. The Grade 3/4 classes are exploring texture and shape in art. The Grade 5/6 class, having mastered some current dances, is busy learning some flashback dances from the 70s, 80s and 90s. The Grade 6/7 class is in the final stages of preparation for a play that they hope to present to the school in the coming weeks. The Grade 7/8 class is exploring abstract art and continuing to create sculptural pieces.

Packing some “spare pairs” would be a great idea while we wait for drier days! Happy Spring!!

On February 24th, the girls basketball team travelled to Bishop Smith Catholic School

for a tournament. After three hard-fought round robin games where the Pride came up

just short, the girls were matched up against Champlain Discovery. In a very exciting

game, our Pride came out on top winning 22-18. This helped the girls move on to play

against Jeanne Lajoie in the B final game. This game featured the Pride hitting a game

-tying buzzer-beating shot, sending the game to overtime tied at 18. In overtime the

girls scored four additional baskets, while only allowing one - winning 26-20. A job well

done girls! It was a pleasure coaching a team with great spirit and dedication. You

made Pine View proud! Team members were: Taylor, Isabella, Tana, Samantha,

Keely, Macie, Maggie, Addison and Olivia.

GRADE 8 GIRLS BASKETBALL

GRADE 8 BOYS BASKETBALL Congratulations to the grade 8 boys basketball team. On February 19th the boys played four great games at the tournament held at Champlain Discovery School. It was a hard-fought battle against Champlain Discovery and a great defeat in the last game against St. Anthony’s. Our team represented our school with class and were a pleasure to coach.
