Dear Resident –

Can you believe the summer is almost over? It has come and gone quickly, and offered

opportunities for families to make meaningful memories right here in Fishers! During the

State of the City in February, Mayor Fadness noted that residents wanted something

different from our park system. Since then, we’ve been working to create events that

have already become new traditions for your family.

The State of the City outlined the direction for our parks staff with an emphasis on

developing vibrant events that create a sense of community for residents of all ages and

ability levels, and our department charged into planning. You asked for diverse, community-

wide events, and we’ve spent the summer celebrating record-setting attendance during many of

them; including:

• Spring Movies in the Park presented by XFINITY® which hosted 2,300 movie-goers (more than 800 people);

• Rick Springfield hosted over 3,000 concert-goers,

• Monsoon Madness host over 2,000 residents for waterlogged fun in the sun (more than 700 people);

• Summer Camps welcomed over 800 campers this summer, and

• Mud Day hosted over 3,400 residents of all ages for muddy fun!

You’ve also connected with us on social media to help give us an idea of what you’d like

to see from our department! If you haven’t yet connected with us, be sure to like

our Facebook page and follow us on Twitter. We love seeing your event photos,

hearing your opinions and getting to know you better.

Countless residents have attended events this summer, and new seasons

promise more recreation opportunities. Stay tuned for our 2015 wrap up for

the total number of residents that enjoyed new and traditional community-

wide events this year!

Sincerely,

Tony Elliot

Volunteer Spotlight: Boo Bash

Team up with our staff and surrounding businesses to help create a Halloween village that welcomes children of all ages! We are searching for 12 volunteers, ages 18 and older, to assist with this festive event. Volunteers are needed between the hours of 3 to 5 p.m. and 5 to 9 p.m., and will lend a hand in various ways during the Halloween celebration.

Volunteer roles really aim to support vendors setting up their booth before the event, assist Fishers Parks & Recreation staff with the costume contest or at the parks tent, lend a hand in the concession stand, or even help ensure our restrooms are stocked and accessible throughout the event. Volunteers are encouraged to wear orange and Halloween headwear or caps - please do not wear masks, though!

Contact me by Oct. 12 so you can register and I can get your t-shirt size. This is a great event to be involved in!

Pickleball has arrived in Fishers!Head to Cyntheanne Park and try the courts

Cyntheanne ParkGrab a racket, pack a water bottle and hit the courts! Fishers Parks & Recreation is on a quest to offer diverse recreation opportunities that appeal to residents of all ages, and the addition of four pickleball courts at Cyntheanne Park speaks to the vibrancy that can be found right here in our community. At the end of July our department celebrated the first dedicated, outdoor pickleball courts in central Indiana, and the courts have been packed since opening!

For those who may be unfamiliar with pickleball, it’s an interesting sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. The courts are free to use and available on a first come, first served basis. We suggest stopping by any local sports retailers to purchase a racket and ball as they are not available at the park, but there is a playground that children or grandchildren can enjoy while parents/grandparents enjoy some friendly competition on the courts.

Stop by and check out one of our newest amenities, today! Cyntheanne Park is located at 12383 Cyntheanne Road in Fishers. For more rules of the game, visit the USAPA Pickleball website.

Mayor Fadness and the Fishers Parks & Recreation team celebrated the

dedication ceremony July 28.

Ritchey Woods Nature PresreveConnecting with nature; get outdoors!

I consider myself so fortunate to live in an area where I can experience the change of seasons, fall being my favorite! The vibrant color of the forest, the crisp days and the smell that permeates the autumn air is simply the best #ecotherapy.

Danesa StolzChief Naturalist@RitcheyWoods [email protected]

Summer, fall, winter, spring. Each conjures up a beautiful, natural landscape filled with distinct colors, animals and memories!

Nature explorers of all ages know that leaves change as the seasons progress. The full, green leaves of summer mold into beautiful colors during autumn and then fall to allow for new growth. But do you ever stop and think about the amazing lifecycle of a leaf?

For leaves to produce energy they need water, sunlight and carbon dioxide which combine to create glucose during the process of photosynthesis. This process is also dependent on another chemical – chlorophyll which gives leaves their green colors.

As autumn progresses and winter approaches, there is not enough sunlight or water for photosynthesis to

take place, and trees go dormant. This means that they stop producing chlorophyll and their green color fades. Eventually that leaf will fall off of the tree.

Be on the lookout for vibrant colors this fall including:• oranges and yellows that were hidden during the

spring and summer by the chlorophyll• reds and purples that come from sugars still

trapped in the leaves, and• brown that comes from tannin, a bitter waste

product that may build up in the leaves

What’s your favorite season? Tweet me at @RitcheyWoods and with your favorite season and why. One lucky winner will receive a Skyzone prize pack that can be used during any season!

OUR ENVIRONMENT

Creative Ways to Participate:

Make a Leaf RubbingLeaves are a vital part of the forest which is why at a nature preserve like Ritchey Woods you are not allowed to collect them. Do a leaf rubbing instead! Take a clipboard, paper and crayons on your hike. Lay the leaf (vein side

up) under the paper. Gently rub the crayon across the leaf and you’ll have an instant work of art!

Jump in a Pile of LeavesWhy should your child jump into a huge pile of freshly raked leaves? Well, why not? Simple 3 step instructions:

1. Rake the leaves in your yard into a glorious pile, 2. Jump into the pile, 3. Repeat. Parents, this makes for a great photo opportunity!

Compost Fall Leaves from your Yard

Composting is a great way to divert waste from landfills and the rich humus produced can be used for gardens and flower beds thus reducing the need for fertilizer. After you are done jumping in the

leaf pile above – compost it! This also makes for a great science experiment, have your children make observations about how

different materials decompose over time!

Need help identifying a tree? Tweet us a picture

of the tree, leaf and bark @RitcheyWoods and we can help you determine

what you’ve found!
