PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Hi to all our members and Arabian enthusiastsThe season is rolling along well with Shows and Endurance rides now under way. Myself and daughters Alice and Nadine with two of our 2* Endurance mares thoroughly enjoyed our day competing at the 22nd Auckland Arabian Spectacular on the 1st December. Entries were extra good with 32 purebreds and 23 partbreds competing. Congratulations and many thanks to the show committee for a well run event. This thanks also extends to other committees currently working on the organisation of major shows and events. I have been involved in running significant shows and endurance rides and it can be a very stressful and thankless task at times. Please remember this when attending and wherever possible put your hand up to lend a hand, and be grateful and polite to those who are working hard to put on these events.Endurance has a ride in mid December at Kurutau, Taupo and this will be a major lead up event to the North Island Championships at the end of January. Unfortunately both Endurance and Show North Island Championships clash next year. This could not be avoided due to availability of grounds and volunteers to run these events. As hopefully many of you have already seen we have advertised our three Championship Events in Show Circuit. Also mentioned was the 12.5% derivative registration. I believe we must have ongoing promotion of the breed covering all areas of competition and interest. We are also very aware of the costs of this and to this end the Show Circuit advert has been partially funded by some of your Council members. We are also wanting to purchase a Promotion Kit for use at eg Equidays, Horse of Year, Stallion Parades, hence the sale of one of our Peter Upton paintings to fundraise for this Kit. Sincere thanks to Peter Upton for this very generous donation. We have had a number of people take the opportunity to register horses while we have our amnesty running and would encourage anybody with horses to register to please contact the office. We will work with you as best we can to get your registration through so please talk to our Secretary or a Council member. We were all very disappointed to have Deb Bamber resign from our Council recently and thanks to Deb for her time and input. I value every Councillor’s ideas and opinions and a rounded group of people makes for a good debate and healthy decisions. I will cover the position of Treasurer until the AGM next year. Whilst on the topic of finances I can say the Society is “holding steady” and we are hopeful that we will be close to budget this financial year. Thanks to the NZAHBS Councillors and Secretary for their support and enthusiasm, we are optimistic about the future of our Society.Remember to relax and have fun showing and here’s to many happy hours in the saddle for those riders amongst us.Melanie BarkerPresident, NZAHBS

Exported Horses - Passports It is a WAHO requirement from 1 January 2014 that all xxported horses must be issued with a passport from the exporting registry. The Export fee will be held at the existing rate of $172.50. Please ensure Export Documentation is submitted to the office well in advance of the horse leaving NZ as a passport will need to be produced and returned to you to accompany the horse on its journey.

Imported Horses - DNA Please note that imported horses will be re-DNA’d on entry to New Zealand and the results compared with the report sent by the exporting registry to confirm the identity of the imported horse. The Import fee will be held at the existing rate of $172.50.

Publicity Council are looking at options to print a hard copy Year Book with a stud directory in the back that would be distributed annually at the AGM. The planned electronic Stud Directory to still be produced even though it is running well behind schedule due to the Secretary’s reduced hours.

BELGIUM STUD VISITArticle & Photographs by Demelza HoogeveenIn July my husband Nick and I, and friend Julia Kernaghan from the UK, were fortunate to be able to visit Johanna Ullstrom’s Arabian training and breeding centre based at ‘Darby Farm’, Sint-Truiden, Belgium.

The weather was warm and sunny (apparently this is not always the case!) and the countryside was very pretty and lush green. The farm itself was very beautiful and tranquil, with a chateau in the middle, a training track running through a small forest of beautiful mature trees and stable blocks that most of us can only dream about.

Residing at Darby Farm are some of the top European show horses, as well as some breeding stallions, mares, and their progeny, owned by Johanna or her clients. We were able to see many horses from the “big name” sires that we have not yet seen in New Zealand, such as WH Justice, Ajman Monscione, Trussardi, and QR Marc. There were also a number of Botswana progeny (New Zealanders will be familiar with Gerzanne Stud’s Botswana son TF Fezzan) both straight Egyptian and Egyptian-related. I was impressed with the type from the Botswana/Bey Shah cross, one of which famously includes the exotic TF Afrikhan Shah (above right) who really is as pretty as his pictures.

Many New Zealanders love the El Shaklan family and it was a real pleasure to see the gorgeous Om El Shahmaan (below) who has the big eyes and smooth body that you expect from this family. There were also some pretty Sanadik El Shaklan daughters and granddaughters, including one daughter out of world champion mare ZT Sharuby. ZT Sharuby is a mare that I have always admired – although aged it was a thrill to see this beautiful elegant old girl in the flesh at last.

Another mare that I was happy to meet was the exquisite Johara Al Naif, with the Prince Fa Moniet/

Ansata Halim Shah cross that features in my own stallion’s pedigree. Johara Al Naif is a successful show mare, a World Champion filly, and contrary to popular belief that show horses can’t be ridden, she wears leather!

Speaking of ridden mares, a favourite of mine was WW Indih. I liked what I saw of her in a video under saddle, and to meet her in the stable was a delight. She is an exotic chocolate-coloured mare by QR Marc from the Crusader daughter Ivernah, and another horse proving that pretty horses can be great to ride.

Most of the horses at Johanna’s farm are broken in and the stallions are ridden regularly. All of the horses spend at least part of the day outside on pasture. We saw a number of lovely mares at pasture with foals at foot, some of Ali Jamaal lines, and some pure Polish including the great Polish national champion Grenlandia, still looking sprightly at 25 years of age.

Our time with Johanna was too short; she is a very interesting and funny person to listen to of course the horses are a dream. I would recommend Johanna and her Arabian horse farm to any Kiwi lucky enough to visit Belgium; you won’t be disappointed.

AMBERIDGE JAYDEN (Wind ‘N’ Fire (AU) x Emmajay)

Jayden was such a big part of our family and to lose him to colic in April 2012 after two very serious accidents was uttering. The first in 2005 on the way to the National Show in Christchurch where my drawbar on my truck broke sending my float into an oncoming bus! Jayden walked away with fractures on his forehead, we were back competing a year later. Just two years later he was playing in the frost hitting ice and then skidded over a fence leaving his hind leg behind! It took a year of bandaging to get his leg healed before we were able to compete in our local Winter Dressage Series where he was the Novice Champion over the series. I retired him from competition after this to start my own family but he was still very busy being a schoolmaster. Jayden was National Champion Lead Anglo three times Junior/Senior twice. He had competed in Open showing, Dressage, Trail Riding with much success. Although my best memories will always be his love for life, always pleased to see you (especially at tucker time!) and he loved to act the clown wherever possible! So too lose him in his prime will always make me sad but I was so lucky to have him for another eight years after our accident with the float.

Raffeah and Reniah are Pure Crabbet full sisters by Silver Omen, and Mystique is an Arabian Warmblood, also by Silver Omen. It was the first 40km ride for the three mares, and all qualified.

With the recent sad passing of Alison Steward, it’s time to recall one of the early products of her breeding programme, my much loved Karamea Kismet (Araleigh Kavanna x Karamea Zahra).

Kizzy wasn’t the best conformed horse, but he carried his head and tail so prettily it didn’t matter about the bits in between. Often people would say “awww - isn’t she lovely!” Kizzy would flutter his eyelashes alluringly and mutter “how unobservant can they be!”

Kiz was certainly a horse of character. An endurance horse through and through, he did not appreciate my attempts at dressage training. The shortest distance between two points was, obviously, a straight line; circles were BORING and would be enlivened by shying at invisible objects until I got the message. Kizzy was good at shying anyway and could always be relied upon to find a rock, a bird, a leaf, a shadow to keep his rider’s sense of balance finely honed. One of his better shies was at a roadside goat which came out of its house at an inopportune moment, sending Kiz leaping sideways on to the tarseal where he spread-eagled himself in front of a car. Fortunately we all escaped unharmed.

Kizzy loved endurance, and he was very good at it, his best win being the 1990 North Island Championships when we beat the redoubtable Manny Gall and won Fittest Horse. He learned early in his career that winning was all, and would regard it as

KARAMEA KISMETRebecca Glover remembers a friend

a personal affront to be passed by another horse. On a narrow track he would deliberately block the path of others, with a look on his face to chill the marrow. He also got very good at reading course markers (a skill I never really mastered), was fast and surefooted downhill, and I never had to dismount to open a gate – even Taranakis. With excellent recovery rates and a fast gallop he became a force to be reckoned with on the endurance scene, his lack of fashionable breeding notwithstanding.

But Kiz was no one trick pony. A friend of mine, Lorraine Vickers, introduced us to western riding, and we did some shows in open competition. Kizzy was good at trail classes but wholly unsuited to western pleasure, being unable to go as slowly as the quarter horses – and there were those circles again! So many horses to pass, as far as Kiz was concerned. However, he enjoyed reining, and at his first and only attempt became almost certainly the only Arab to win a reining class at an open show in the history of New Zealand western showing (we quit while we were ahead).

One of the many things for which I shall always be indebted to Kiz was the way he trained Zada (Taurere Sunzada), my stallion. The old fella’s brand of tough love helped make Zada the gentleman he is today, although the youngster probably thought he was in purgatory when he came to live with us. Nevertheless, the two shared a paddock happily until Kizzy’s death in January 2008, two months short of his 28th birthday.

YOUTH PROFILEBella Partington

BELLA PARTINGTON of Rangiorawrites about Gleneyre Premonition

Hello my name is Bella Partington and I am thirteen years old. I own my very special derivative Arabian horse Jack. Jack is a dark bay derivative gelding by the Purebred Stallion Mizar out of the part bred Arabian mare Angel he was bred by Cherie Stalker, he lives on our ten acre lifestyle block in Rangiora with his four other best horsey friends. I have owned Jack now for almost 1 year and in this time both Jack and I have really bonded and have given each other confidence. We have achieved so much together and I have completed many shows, ODE, treks, dressage, and show jumping all with amazing results. The most amazing times I have had with Jack have been when we compete in the shows at Arabian costume. He absolutely loves showing off in his beautiful costume. (I do too) Jack knows that when he is in his costume he is only allowed to walk, canter and gallop and this he loves to do as I take him to the beach quite a bit and we practice there. The beach is so good for Jack he also loves to jump waves and again this is a great place for us to canter and gallop as the sand is soft. I spend many hours with Jack teaching him many skills as he is a novice horse but is a very quick learner and he really tries so hard to please me.

I have a room full of beautiful ribbons that Jack and I have achieved together. Every show that we enter into we really try to improve in all areas and to be successful. I am a very competitive rider and I set myself many goals for Jack and I, and this year 2013 I am sure will prove to be very successful for us both.

One of my passions that I love to do is jumping. Jack and I started off with lots of ground poles. We did lots of workouts with them. One of my favourite work outs was where we laid three poles down on the ground around two big strides apart. We then cantered through the poles counting the strides from when we landed to taking off over the pole. We also challenged ourselves and tried to do the grid in three strides and then four. It was harder as we got slower as I had to have more control cantering over the poles. Jack and I developed trust coming into the jumps and now I feel like I can push him harder because there will always be that strong trust we have in each other; he is truly an amazing jumper. Jacks very first ODE was very scary, but we kept calm and after dressage we were placed 13th! The cross country came and I was so nervous. We blasted out of the starting gates and off we went, Jack was loving it so much it was hard to slow him down and being part Arabian he was flying round the course. The finish flags drew nearer and we zoomed through them! Jack was so happy with

himself he thought he might add a few bucks in, so we were bucking while trying to slow down! We both had a blast and would happily do it again. We weren’t finished though we still had the show jumping to go. Needn’t to worry we went clear in the show jumping as well! We had the best day ever! In the end we ended up getting placed 5th! I was so happy; it was so amazing to be called up to collect my ribbon and prize. Jack loved his treats of carrots and apples. We had our pony club breakup in December and Jack jumped 1m 10 in the six bar competition. I was so proud of him. Jack is becoming an amazing jumper and I know we will continue to do more eventing.

One of our favourite leisure activities is going to the beach. We love it! It’s the best thing ever going for a good gallop and only hearing the four pound beat of your mount and the wind that lashes against your face. He loves the water, so we often spend our time jumping the white froth on the waves before we head off home.

Arabian horses have always been my favourite breed. I love their heads, they are so beautifully created, the way they dish in and their eyes are so big and mesmerising. Their tails are really gorgeous the way the hold them in the air they are very fine and delicate animals. Arabians are very fast learners and I am seeing that in Jack it only takes me 30 minutes at the most to teach him something, he already knows the half pass at the walk, trot and canter he knows how to do a flying change and so much more. They are so intelligent.

Jack is the most perfect games horse. When he sees the horses lining up beside him he gets a competitive look in his eyes and he knows it’s a race. The only problem is when you come to the walking and trotting race Jack thinks you have to be the fastest there and tries to zoom off the starting line. We are whizzes at the barrel racing and all the dismounting and mounting races. Games are one of my favourite activities as we can go really fast.

One great thing about showing is that you meet really lovely people. When I bought Jack we either had to go into Arabian or park hack classes. At shows where Arabian classes were presented we entered them. And that’s how I met a really great friend Caitlin. Caitlin has a purebred Arabian called Tiger, he is such a sweetheart. We recently went to the South Island Premier Championship Show, the weather was atrocious! Pouring rain, gusty blowing winds, and hail. Could it get any worse? The show wasn’t cancelled

drove all the way back to Rangiora to get my number holder and my gown for my costume which I realised was missing too. I felt so stupid and annoyed at myself for leaving those two important pieces for my day behind. Mum left leaving Jack and I standing alone with the float. Mum arrived back an hour later, to find me still sitting in the same place as she left me. She asked how the in hand went and I told her the we had the times wrong their weren’t going to be two rings only one and the purebreds were doing in hand first so we have ages before we had to go into the ring. Finally the time came. I walked Jack into the big indoor sanded arena. We both looked beautiful.

We did extremely well that morning and won first and seconds in many of our classes. We walked back to the float with a massive grin on our faces and a big black and gold tasselled sash, we won Reserve Champion the ribbon was stunning my very first V neck one! It was now time for the costume class. My costume was electric blue wool with blue green and red panels, there were also little sea shells all over the bridle and neck piece. We did so well and won 1st I was so excited and I was so proud of Jack! My next class was the show costume and his black, gold and maroon velvet costume was gleaming like the sun. The weather was so hot and I started panting under all the velvet. Jack was also feeling the heat and we started to get grumpy and unfortunately our manners let us down. Riding came so quickly and I was so hypo. Jack behaved like a puppet he did everything I asked of him and we left the arena for the last time with another nice big sash on our neck. I felt like the most proud person to own the most beautiful horse of all. My derivative Arabian Jack.

I love Jack so much. He has so much charisma about him and he looks so dazzling when he’s all ready for a show. I’m the luckiest person in the world to own Jack who will always be my best friend.

though, so Caitlin and I ran our horses into a stable each then ran to grab our gear from the horrible weather. I never thought the weather was going to be that bad so I didn’t bother bringing a thick jacket. Thankfully Caitlin bought some oilskin jackets so I quickly threw one over myself and that kept me dry. I was still cold though.

The time came for us to get our horses ready. We pulled Jack from the stable and into the isle and got to work. We took his covers off and checked all his beautiful plaits. Thank goodness they all survived the weather. Jack was super shiny so we only gave him a brush down. We didn’t bother putting any make up on as the rain would have washed it straight off. We painted Jack’s hooves shiny black and put his numnah and his comfy Bates Mestro saddle on his back. I always feel so excited when I place Jack’s bridle over his head and see the sparkly red and navy brow band. Jack’s now all ready so I neatly place all my gear on. We head out in the pouring rain and we are both soaked. My amazing boy Jack presented himself beautifully and we had a very successful day with many placings. Jack and I won ourselves best paced and mannered Arabian. I was so excited and couldn’t stop smiling. I had such a fantastic day even though the weather was a disaster, but it never stopped Jack and I from having the best day ever.

Finally the day came for the show that I had been talking about ever since my entries were sent in. The All Arabian Horse Show! I was so nervous. We loaded jack on our float and headed off to the show. We finally arrived at the Canterbury grounds and unloaded Jack. I climbed inside the truck to grab my number holder and realised it wasn’t in there, I freaked out and told mum. She was so grumpy at me. My perfect day was already turning to custard. Thankfully I have the best mum in the world; she

Jack Hudson was the son of Dr Frank Hudson, who was one of Nelson’s early doctors. After farming for most of his life he retired to Wai-iti Valley near Nelson.

On Jack Hudson’s large farm, horses were a necessity and through his experience he believed the Arabian horse was twice as sound for everyday use as any other breed and so he became a breeder of them.

All horses used were home-bred and when he retired from the farm and moved to Belgrove, he took with him a beautiful bay Stallion called Wejen, which he had imported from Australia in 1949 and about 5 mares so that he could continue his hobby in his retirement. He couldn’t make hay on his new farm and so he bought in some which unfortunately contained Hemlock. It was during that 1st winter that Wejen having eaten some of this hay and died.

Mr Hudson then set about procuring another horse which took until 1953 to arrange, but he finally settled for a yearling colt from Australia named Moonouka, again from the well known breeder and owner of Fenwick Stud in Victoria. Unfortunately soon after Moonouka’s arrival in Nelson there was a severe drought and he took quite a while to adjust which resulted in him not developing as well as he should have. However he did sire quite a few horses over the following seasons.

When Mr Hudson shifted to Belgrove he had only one purebred mare which had been imported from Australia, a very rich bay with black points, named Meg. She was imported by a neighbour of Mr Hudson’s and was one of the few registered purebred Arab mares in New Zealand. Mr Hudson bought Meg from his neighbour to breed purebreds. For years Australia would not allow export of mares and so Meg was quite an exception.

About this time a register of Arabian horses was being formed in New Zealand and the organisers approached Mr Hudson to see if he would like to register any of his. At that stage the organisers were wanting to register anything sired by a Purebred Arab, to which Mr Hudson replied that if they were going to adopt that attitude and consider Anglo Arabs as purebred, he would not join their organisation. Consequently Meg’s pedigree was never listed here.

Some 5 years later Moonouka’s arrival, Mr Hudson who suffered terribly from arthritis, decided on his doctors orders to get rid of his breeding stock and sent them all to his daughter Betty who lived in Wellington but who had a “Managed” farm at

NEW ZEALAND’S EARLY IMPORTSArticle by Kotare circa 1985

Carterton and so Monouka and two other mares went up there.

Moonouka only lived for a further three or four seasons before he died in a drought and it was on this property in 1961 that Melanion was foaled by Moonouka out of Meg. It was not long after Mr Hudson sent the horses pedigrees etc to Betty that she had a fire in her house at Wellington and her kitchen and lounge were gutted and along with it all the registration papers.

Although it was relatively easy to replace Moonouka’s papers as he was imported in the 1950’s, all trace of Meg’s pedigree vanished in the fire and as Jack Hudson had never registered her here, it has been a fruitless task to discover her heritage. Consequently, Melanion was never registered.

After Mr Hudson sent his horses up to his daughter, he offered Lloyd Higgins of Nelson the option of a yearling or a two year old and mentioned that the two year old was a bit small and in his opinion would not grow into hack size. Lloyd opted for the two year old Melanion as at that time ponies were in great demand and he felt a small sire could supply both markets depending on the mares size.

Consequently Mr Higgins made travel arrangements for the colt and found out that it would cost 16 pound on the ferry and 12 pound on the plane. Therefore he arranged for the horse to be flown down, but after arriving by train at the airport at Wellington all flights were fog bound for three days and by the time Melanion arrived at the “Twynham” farm he was in a terrible state. However after much care and attention he recovered and in three months time he was a picture of health.

Melanion’s colour has changed as he has grown older, from almost black to bay, to rose grey and dapple grey. He has become a now definite flea-bitten grey.

His best known son Sabre, has also had many colour changes, but that is not his claim to fame. Sabre was owned by Josie Williams of Ngatimoti and bred by the late Joe Spittal of Motueka, this little horse has had 15 Endurance starts in total for 8 wins, three seconds and six Fittest horse awards (the ultimate in Endurance riding is to gain both first place and the fittest, an achievement Sabre has gained no less than four times).

Sedaka, owned and ridden by Peter Dodgshun of Ngatimoti, is a 15.1hh 12 year old grey gelding.

Bred by George Bloomfield of Marahau out of a Thoroughbred mare. This attractive individual did the rounds of different owners and came to the Dodgshuns with a bit of a reputation of being a renegade. However Endurance sorted him out and from seven starts, Sedaka had 5 wins and a second placing. He was one of the favourites to win the 1984 National ride, but unfortunately went amiss only two days before the big event. However he will be watched this season.

Guthrie Beatson of Ngatimoti owns Whiskey, another of Melanion’s sons. Although not a big winner, he has been consistently placed in Endurance competition and has performed with distinction in the show-jumping arena. Harequin Bay, Warrior and Kippa are other Melanion son’s who have acquitted themselves well.

Since all of these of these horses come from the Nelson area alone, it makes one wonder what sort of impact this horse would have made on the Endurance scene had he received the patronage that in hindsight he so obviously deserved.Melanion still stands at “Twynham”, Lloyd and

Ruth Higgins 4000 acre property and at the age of 23 years his looks far belie his age. In fact in his twilight years he is serving as many mares as ever, presumably due in part to his sons continues success. For Melanion’s part, he has proved Jack Hudson’s point, that only the best and purest will do.

Signed Kotare.

The Author Kotare: I first became acquainted with the name Melanion at the Motueka Rodeo Club’s endurance ride in 1983 when four of the six place-getters in the 80k and 40k rides were by Melanion.

Curiosity overcame me and I set out to find just who is this Melanion was. I first learnt he was the sire of very few horses in the area. He covered an average of 5 mares a year according to Joe Spittal who stood him in the Motueka area for a five year period some time back. It was during this time he sired most of his successful endurance horses. His owner Lloyd Higgins, sent him to Joe as he could not attract any mares to his remote Howard Junction property near Murchison.

STUD NEWS

Djewell Arabian SporthorsesFor us it is the end of an era that is fast approaching. Djehlbi (who we call Baz) is going to a respected endurance home but we are retaining his purebred daughter, Djemillah, who has a lovely bond with our daughter Elise.

I am hopeful that a strong performance-bred horse like Djehlbi, in his prime at 9 years, will further in his career in the right hands. It will be exciting to see what he can do. As for us, we are a family who have loved a horse that we bred in France. We have 2 daughters by him and our Paint mare, Charm, is due at Christmas. It has been an expensive and frustrating challenge to bring him to the attention of breeders in NZ. I admit that I never really succeeded and there was an international financial downturn against us as well as our general lack of experience. We were never going to be one of the major players and that's where he needed to be placed in all honesty. I wish the NZAHBS all the best for the future and hope that one day we will have a foal with Djemillah if we can find the right stallion.

For now, it is the end of a chapter for Djewel Arabians and the start of a new one for Djehlbi.

Desert Heritage ArabiansWe have three foals on the ground by our stallion Shaheen Al Saba (AU), and it has been very interesting to see the type of foals he leaves from a varied group of mares. The colt - Destino DH (pending) from Euralea Fire N Desire is tall with good movement, beautiful eyes courtesy of his sire, and has substance and a strong topline from his dam. SS Shula has once again blessed us with a filly - Sharifa DH (pending) is pretty and compact with plenty of attitude. CA Melika Silver Fire has proved again that she breeds on better than herself with a filly named Fiera DH (pending) who has a pretty head, lovely length of rein and nice shoulder. Plans over the next few months include breeding a couple of mares and hitting the show ring, and perhaps even starting one or two horses under saddle.
