Evolved…With 50 years of development and experience, Kenda is constantly improving and evolving to meet

the demands of both the professional and recreational consumers. As part of this evolution, Kenda

has created two levels of tires to fit the different needs of these athletes.

Page 5: 2014 International Bicycle Catalog

The Kenda Pro tires represent the pinnacle of our

technology and performance. We combine the highest

level rubber compounds, casing construction, flat-

protection, and bead material, which is then mounted

onto the award winning tread patterns to give you the

best possible tire for your next riding experience.

The Kenda Sport tires offer some of the same award

winning tread patterns as used in the Pro tires at a

more budget minded price. We use two of our best

rubber compounds, but we combine them with a

slightly heavier and durable casing and in a wire bead

construction. So, if you want to experience the highest

level in tread design without the added cost of the Pro

level tires, go for the Sport.

R2CCOMPOUND

Road 2 Compound (R2C) is Kenda’s latest per-formance compound for road cycling. Like the DTC compound, R2C is comprised of rubber with two different shore A measurements. The center compound is 70sA giving the compound the fastest rolling speed of any Kenda tire, while the shoulders utilize 60sA compound.

STANDARDRUBBERCOMPOUND

Found mainly on Kenda’s K-Generation tires, SRC combines the best attributes of low rolling resistance, extreme durability and tread longevity into one universal package that benefits riders of all disciplines.

Kenda manufactures bicycle tires in eight different rubber compounds, each with its own degree of hardness, referred to as durometer and measured on the shore A (sA) scale.

WhatarethedifferencesinKenda’srubbercompounds?

NATURALRUBBERCOMPOUND

Natural Rubber Compound (NRC) is a low rolling resistance blend of natural and synthetic rubber compounds that allow Kenda tubulars to provide a smooth, quick, and agile handling. NRC is slightly softer than the R2C, with 65sA and further improves the quality of Kenda tubular tires.

HARDRUBBERCOMPOUND

Designed as a complement to the endurance training tires, the Hard Rubber Compound (HRC) is a quick rolling long wearing rubber compound that still gives a comfortable ride without feeling too hard. The HRC is 70sA compound for maximum tread life and speed.

6

Page 7: 2014 International Bicycle Catalog

DUALTREADCOMPOUND

Dual Tread Compound (DTC) is a combination of two different rubber compounds: L3R Pro (center knobs) and Stick-E rubber (corner knobs). DTC rubber is most commonly found on cross country, all-mountain, and cyclocross tires due to its rolling speed and grip.

STICK-ECOMPOUND

Stick-E is Kenda’s original all mountain and downhill rubber compound. The 50sA rubber still provides sure grip for a wide range of trails and conditions while lasting longer than softer compounds. In addition to being used as the shoulder compound on DTC tires, Kenda also offers tires in complete Stick-E compound for the all mountain rider who wants a balanced tire life with a sure grip.

RACESTICK-ERUBBER

Race Stick-E Rubber is a compound designed for race conditions that takes grip to a whole new level. With 42sA, the RSR compound is super soft and sticky for a variety of surface types and conditions. The soft compound provides not only superior grip, but also works as a small degree of independent suspension as each tire knob flex and reform on the trail surface. Designed to further complement Kenda’s rubber compounds for downhill and slalom tires, RSR is perfect for European World Cup conditions as well as the local gravity park.

L3RPRO

L3R Pro is the performance work horse of Kenda’s rubber compounds. L3R Pro is found on anything from road racing to mountain bike tires. At 60sA, the L3R Pro compound is a fast and solid performer, while holding the title of Kenda’s lightest weight rubber compound.

7

Page 8: 2014 International Bicycle Catalog

IRONCLOAK

Kenda’s best puncture resistant material, a blend of Aramid fibers, is laid up on the tire casing from bead to bead. Not only does this provide puncture protection underneath the tread of the tire, but it also reinforces the tire side walls minimizing slashes or tears; with a minimal addition to the overall tire weight.

IRONCLOAKBELT

A thin strip of Kenda’s best puncture resistant material, Iron Cloak, built in directly underneath the tread rubber only, for added puncture protection and minimal weight.

Iron Cloak Belt lets you rest assured that your tires are durable, but light and super supple for the ultimate in riding performance.

Casings/FlatProtection

8

Page 9: 2014 International Bicycle Catalog

IRONCAP

A layer of woven material that runs from bead to bead under the tread to prevent flats. Iron Cap combines some of the technology from the high-end Iron Cloak material without all the added cost.

IRONCAPBELT

Utilizing the same protective material that is in the full Iron Cap protection but limited to just under the tread surface, offering added puncture protection at a minimal cost

and weight addition. Previously known as PRC2.

10

KENDASEALANTCASINGTECHNOLOGY

Kenda SCT (KSCT) is the modification of existing Kenda tire casing technologies optimizing them for use with fluid based tubeless conversion systems. No longer are

riders bound to weakness of a tube that can be punctured nor do they need to worry about a tubeless tire adding undue rotating weight.

CASINGADDEDPROTECTION

CAP or CAP PLY as it has been referred to is an added layer of material that is under the tread area and runs from bead to bead. Generally used in Kenda Premium Downhill Tires as a puncture resistant material designed to prevent pinch flats.

Page 11: 2014 International Bicycle Catalog

11

K-SHIELD

This is Kenda’s first line of defense against punctures. A layer of aramid and ceramic particles inside the tire under the tread area only. Designed to prevent punctures.

ENDURANCE

The new standard for Kenda in maximum flat protection, available in three different levels of protection and price. The Premium Level (E1) combines a 120tpi casing

wrapped from folding bead to folding bead in Aramid Iron Cloak fibers and then topped with another layer of Iron Cloak directly under the tread rubber. The Performance

Level (E2) wraps Iron Cloak across a 120tpi folding bead casing and is then topped off with K-Shield under the tread rubber, while the Trekking Level (E3) wraps Iron Cap

across a 60tpi casing and is then topped off with K-Shield under the tread rubber.

Whatarethedifferencesbetweentubetype(TT),Tubeless(UST),

KendaSealantCasingTechnology(KSCT),andTubulartires?

SEALANTCASINGTECHNOLOGY-TUBELESSREADY

Kenda Sealant Casing Technology (KSCT) tires can be considered a cross of a tube type and UST type tire. When used with a liquid sealant, KSCT tires form an air tight seal, similar to the UST tire, but can be used on almost all bicycle rims. KSCT tires have an additional layer of material built into the casing of the tire that allows it to be compat-ible with the various chemicals in liquid sealants; however this material is thinner and lighter than its UST counterpart. The benefits of KSCT tires, when used with sealant, allows the rider to use lower air pressures as well as take full advantage of the liquid sealant compound when it comes to sealing most punctures or cuts in a tire.

TUBETYPE

Tube Type is the standard for bicycle tires. It mounts to the rim of bicycle wheel with a steel wire bead or an Aramid folding bead, and the tube that is placed inside of the tire is then inflated. Tube type tires are the least expensive type of tires and they offer the largest range of sizes and tread styles.

12

Page 13: 2014 International Bicycle Catalog

TUBULAR

Tubular tires are performance orientated tires in which the tube is sewn into the casing of the tire. The tire is then glued onto a rim. The benefits of tubulars include the ability to run at significantly higher pressures, some tubulars have a max pres-sure rating of 200psi or higher. Tubulars also have a more supple feel to their ride compared to a tube type tire; this is due in part to the higher TPI fabric used to build tubular tires.

UNIVERSALSYSTEMTUBELESS(UST)

Tubeless UST (Universal System Tubeless) tires, when mounted onto a UST rim, form an air tight bead lock, negating the need for a tube inside of the tire. The air tight seal is achieved by increasing the thickness of the rubber compound across the side walls of the tire as well as changing the shape of the tire bead to match with the UST stan-dard. The benefits of this system include the ability to ride at lower air pressures, giv-ing the rider more tire contact with the ground, and eliminates the tube as a separate component that can be punctured.

The Kaliente Pro, the racing tire that Kenda developed in conjunction with an elite level UCI Professional road racing team. Producing the absolute lightest tire wasn’t our ambition. Instead, we set out to create a tire that was race ready in weight and had puncture protection running from bead-to-bead. So, we used our Iron Cloak puncture protection under our R2C compound which increased the flat protection and longevity, while still offering great handling characteristics.

The Honey Badger XC is the lighter, faster version of the original. Designed for those who would rather wear spandex than baggies. The Tri-bite knobs have been resized and moved to maximize efficiency for those who love to climb, descend, and race through tight single track on a variety of terrain. The tire spacing of the knobs allow each knob to truly work for you while clearing mud and debris, while providing superior grip compared to the competitors.

Named after the infamous canyon in L.A. County where Tinker Juarez trains. The Turnbull Canyon is notorious as a place where unearthly supernatural things happen, a kind of place where you want to be confident in your tires. The Turnbull Canyon Pro will dig into any climb while still letting you fly downhill and through the tightest of switchbacks. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, that explains this tire to a T. When you are racing marathon events and speed, grip, and weight are all at a premium you have to rely on your tires to support you the entire time. That is why we looked to one of the most prolific endurance racers around Tinker Juarez for the development of this tire. Small reverse-scalloped center knobs provide a near continual center section for speed, while the angular transition and side knobs bite at every angle for braking and cornering.

Brian Lopes designed this tire to match his speed and aggression contained in his silky-smooth style. The center paddles are fast rolling but also have good braking and climbing characteristics. To provide the uniquely positive cornering grip there are purposely designed gaps between the center and corner knobs. These corner knobs are pronounced and provide a very positive feel that you can trust while ripping through corners.

KLONDIKE STANDARD

The Klondike is the postal service of bicycle tires; sleet, snow, and ice aren’t going to stop them. The classic pattern that started it all and featuring an open tread pattern with directional knobs for smooth rolling across the center line, the knob pattern is designed to shed snow and ice while the tungsten carbide tipped studs dig into the ice providing extra stability on the slickest of surfaces. The 169 studs are spread across the transition knobs where they matter the most, and then are widely spaced on the edge knobs for control in the corners.

KLONDIKE SKINNY

The Klondike Skinny was designed for the Cyclocross rider who races in snow and ice, or commutes on their cross bike. Doubling as a skinny 29’er tire as well, the 100 studs provide the traction you will need in almost any winter environment. Using an updated tread design from our classic Klondike pattern, the Klondike Skinny has a smooth running center line, while knobs scoop and push debris out the sides, and the alternating tungsten carbide tipped studs keep you upright on your bike.

Casing– is the woven fabric under layer that makes up majority of the tire. The casing can be constructed out of several different fabric types, and can be layered up to create the different ply (layers) of a tire. The casing runs from bead to bead under the tread and is made up of thread and rubber.

Cord – Every tire has a fabric under layer, referred to as the casing, that serves as the foundation of the tire and the cord is the individual strands of fabric that form the casing. The cord casing is coated in rubber and then the remainder of the tire is built around this casing. The quality of the cord casing is indicated by the TPI (treads per inch) or EPI (ends per inch). Generally, the higher the treads per inch (TPI) the higher the quality of the tire. In the Kenda line of tires, entry level tires have 22tpi and they rise to 30, 60, and 120tpi at the premium level.

TreadRubber – a separate rubber component that is applied to the casing of the tire prior to the vulcanization and formation of the tread pattern. Once the smooth unformed tread rubber is applied, the tire is inserted into a mold where it is vulcanized. Once vulcanized, the rubber becomes a permanent part of the tire.

WireBead – a thin steel wire that is spun into the appropriate diameter for the tire that serves as the attachment point between the tire and the rim. Wire beads are generally found on entry level tires or Kenda’s premium downhill tires.

FoldingBead – an Aramid string woven into the appropriate diameter for the tire that serves as the attachment point between the tire and the rim. Sometimes referred to as Kevlar Bead tires, folding

bead tires are lighter weight than wire bead and are often used on high pressure tires as well as the all of Kenda’s premium road tires.

TPI(TreadsPerInch) – a common indicator of the quality of the casing of a tire. Higher TPI tires are lighter weight and provide a more supple ride. Lower TPI tires are durable and provide greater stability.

Tiremold – can be made of two or more pieces that when pressed together will form the tread pattern of the tire. While applying high heat energy, a bicycle tire is formed by inflating a bladder, which presses the ‘green’ un-vulcanized tire into a negative mold of the tread pattern.

Presta – a high pressure “skinny” valve sometimes referred to as a French valve.

Schrader – a low pressure automotive type valve, sometimes referred to as an American valve.

RimStrip – a thin strip of material that protects the tube from potential punctures caused by the holes, nipples, spokes, and other sharp objects. Rim strips come in different materials and sizes to accommodate a wide range of rims, tires, and applications.

E.T.R.T.O.(EuropeanTireandRimTechnicalOrganization) - also called the ISO number, is the numerical measurement that is used to determine the exact rim compatibility of the tire. The E.T.R.T.O. number is broken into two sets, the first value indicates the width of the tire in millimeters, and the second value indicates the diameter of the rim to tire bead interface in millimeters. Using the E.T.R.T.O. number is the recommended method of finding the right size tire for your rim.

Glossary

Page 63: 2014 International Bicycle Catalog

TraditionalSizingSystem – is indicated on the sidewall of a tire and is expressed as two numbers separated by a ‘X’. The first number is the outside diameter of the tire and the second number is the width. Different countries have different standards for tire sizes and as such have led to confusion and incompatibility between tires that all share the same outside diameter. For example there are five different tire diameters that all share the traditional size of 26”. To match up traditional sizes one should refer to the E.T.R.T.O. of a tire for exact compatibility. An easy rule to make certain that a compatible replacement tire is chosen is to match up tires that have their traditional size expressed as a fraction with another tire with a fractional size; and tires expressed decimally with other similar decimally expressed tires.

HowdoIknowifIhavetherightpressureinmytire?

The question about tire pressures is one of the most commonly asked, and it has the broadest range of answers. All tires have a minimum recommended inflation pressure and a maximum inflation pressure. The minimum recommended inflation pressure is the lowest pressure at which a tire can safely be used. If a rider were to ride a tire below the minimum inflation pressure, there is the possibility that the tire could slide on the rim, which could result in damaging the tube or the tire. Running pressure below recommended levels also increases the chances of a pinch flat. Exceeding the maximum pressure increases the chance of the tire bursting off of the rim, potentially damaging the rim or harming the rider. Additionally, surpassing the maximum infla-tion pressure can make a tire more prone to bouncing or skipping, thus adversely affecting the ride quality.

Finding the correct pressure for a rider within the minimum and maxi-mum range is effected by several different components: trail or road conditions, weather, weight of the rider, type of bicycle, etc. The firmer the condition of the trail/road the more likely a rider can use a higher pressure; as surface conditions deteriorate a rider will achieve better performance with a lower pressure so that the tire can conform to the surface of the trail/road, thus giving the rider more control. This likewise is true when dealing with adverse weather conditions. If it is dry out, a rider can use a higher air pressure, but if it is raining, wet, or snowy a rider will achieve safer handling conditions by decreasing the air pres-sure in their tires. Rider weight can also dictate what tire pressure is best for you. Lighter weight riders can typically use a lower pressure since their body mass is putting a lower load on a tire than a heavier rider; and vice versa a heavier rider may be better suited running higher pressures. While all of these factors and more can affect what pressure is best, find-ing your comfortable range is in the end up to the rider.
