    Dear Cyclists and Adventurers,

Hanz and I have built between 20,000 and 25,000 bicycles over theyears. We still remember that every bicycle, when it is right, is a verypersonal item. Buying a bicycle at a distance is new to most people.Having it built custom or yoursel and knowing that its going to beright can eel uncertain. A very important and unique thing about

a Bike Friday is that you speak directly to the people at the actory. Our comitment to you is to build your Bike Friday as a well ttingtravel partner. We guarantee it.

Troughout this catalog we have tried to share what this specialprocess will be like with quotes rom our thousands o customers

instead o ad copy written by proessionals. Bike Fridays are dierentand look dierent so people tend to have some common questionsand concerns. Below a Bike Friday owner has answered those commonconcerns (like small wheels and buying rom a distance) just recentlyor another prospective buyer on the Bike Friday YAK! list. We couldnot have done a better job ourselves.

Tank you John or, like hundreds o other Bike Friday owners, reerring us and doing the real Sales work by your kind word omouth. We really appreciate it.

-----Original Message-----From: [email protected]: Thursday, April 13, 2006 5:39 AMTo: [email protected]; [email protected]: Buying a Bike FridayDave,

Your letter brings back memories. I was certainly undecided and a bit apprehensive about buying a Friday, particularly without riding one. I nallydecided that they oer a great 30-day money back guarantee, which they could not aord i very many olks did not like their new rides. So I bought New World Tourist with Ultegra components and a three-speed rear hub.

You ask about speed. I see no dierence. I keep up with the olks I used to keep up with, and get dropped by the same guys that are thinner anaster and younger. I usually ride a Waterord RS-22, which is a l ighter bike than the Friday, but I nd that I can keep up on the Friday.

You asked about long distance comort. I have done the 2-day, 208 mile STP (Seattle to Portland Classic) twice, once on the Waterord and once onthe Friday. Comort was comparable. The smaller wheels are a bit twitchier and show the bumps, but on reasonably smooth suraces, there is notmuch dierence. I I were to switch rom the Stelvio tires that my salesman recommended and that I later purchased, I would notice more o a speeddierence, but improvement on rougher roads. So I like having the option to ride ast and smooth, or a bit slower on rougher suraces on some ContTopTouring. Like everything else in lie, there are tradeos.

The Friday is built like a truck. Mechanical issues have been ew and mostly related to the beating the bike takes as TSA and the airlines handle themachine. Brakes may need adjusting, a cable may be damaged, a spoke bent. Nothing too big, and usually something I can handle, and I am notinclined to x my bikes because that is not one o my skills,. Once I had to take it to a shop because a cable end became dislodged. They dropped

everything or a chance to work on this dierent kind o bike. But whats dierent is the rame. The mechanicals are the same, so service is usuallynot an issue.

When I bought the Friday, Steve Strickland at BF emphasized that the ride would be similar, but not the same as my standard rame Waterord thatcost twice as much. He was right, it is dierent but very agreeable. I rode the Friday yesterday because the Waterord was getting new wheels. great un to ride. I just took it out o the case and was on the road in about 10 minutes. Assembly is a snap, particularly i you do it once in a while.

I have the three-speed hub which I like, but which eels a bit heavy in the rear end. One o the riders in the club, a 70-plus-year-old nun drylyobserved that we are a good match, because Youre heavy in the rear end too!

In short, I would encourage you to try the NWT. I like the fexibility, the durability, and the way I can take MY BIKE to parts unknown. I doubt you wregret the purchase, but i you do, send it back. I you are anywhere near Springeld, IL, come ride mine. Folks who do usually like it.

What Some o Our Customers and the Press Have To Say

From Cycling Luminaries Ed Pavelka and

    Fred Matheny o www.RoadBikeRider.com

Weve taken trips with our Bike Fridays or 10 years.Eds ridden the little wheels in centuries, brevets andeight cycling camps. Fred has rolled his Pocket Rocketthrough two Hottern Hell Hundreds, two El ours deucson and a seven-day tour in Ireland.

Heres the best part: We havent spent one extra cent toy with these bikes to all those events. Tey pack easilyin a regular Pullman suitcase, avoiding as much as $150in rip-o bike charges per roundtrip ight.

Other good solutions or bicycle transport have beenintroduced in recent years: S&S couplings and RitcheysBreakaway bike, to name two. But we remain so pleasedwith our Pocket Rockets -- and Bike Fridays customerservice -- that were not tempted to change.

    L.A. Times

Tis Pocket Rocket Pro model is the closest to a

racing bike and probobly is still the design to chase.Sti, responsive and ast. -Geoggrey Mohan

From John Whitton Bria via the YAK!

I nd the PRP ( Pocket Rocket Pro) to be awonderul bicycle. Riders on exotic bikes with biggerwheels do not zoom by and leave me in the dust, but riders with better legs do, no matter what thebike. Te PRP and I are registered or the MountWashington Hill Climb, and I have ar more aith inthe PRPs ability to ride a good race than in my own.I I had to have only one bicycle, the PRP would be it.

John Schubert, Adventure Cyclist , Feb

    2006

It has the ride quality o a large-wheel bike, wichendears it to some o the most sophisticated cyclists Iknow, but it has other aspects besides being a olding bikethat collapses to t in a suitcase or travel bag....

From Geni Hart, Fargo, North Dakota

We just nished a trip on the Camino del Santiagowith our Bike Fridays. WOW ... climbing the Pyreneeswas a wonder with these machines. At 61, I raced

around young chaps trying to muscle their way up tothe top. We are impressed. Everyone assumes we areslow because o the small wheels. Not so. I love mybike. Because the center o gravity is much lower, I canhandle it so much better than my Cannondale ouringbike. I always come back rom trips with owies butnot this time. Even my husband commented on thisact.

We were boarding a train in France and the conductorsaid a denite NO to bringing on bikes. We were 2minutes rom the train leaving and who knows when atrain that would take bikes would leave. I simply said we

have a ticket, we can get our bikes into bags and Voilathey will be gone. He said that i they were not gone atthe rst stop, he would throw us o the train. Well, theywere stowed and our connections were perect. What agreat investment. Geni Hart, Fargo, ND

    New York Times, Sept. 2005

Its responsive and handles as nicely as my last roadrame, but a lot more portable. -Mr. Bria

Dear Peter, (Bike Friday Sales Consultant)Tank you so much or everything you have done or

my daughter and I. Our Bike Friday arrived on Mondayaternoon last week and by uesday morning we wereliving our dream. Our Bike Friday surpasses all ourexpectations. It ts our bodies and is just so easy to ride, making two very amateur and very handicapped riders

look like and eel like a couple o pros. Jacinda has takento her Bike Friday like a sh to water ... the rst timewe took it or a spin I thought it would last about tenminutes ... expecting Jacinda would become rustratedetc etc. But it was just so natural like the bike became anextension o us or vice versa ... and we just kept going ...we were riding or more than an hour. We have riddenevery day since and are now doing kilometres ... up anddown the broadwater o our beautiul Gold Coast orhours at a time. I dreamt o this Peter, but deep insidethought I was probably aiming or the moon. Whenit comes to Jacinda I have always aimed or the moonand sometimes we reach the stars. Tat is because she issuch a battler and never gives up her determination orwhatever she achieves. Our Bike Friday has helped usreach the moon, and this is just the beginning. Tank youso much, our Bike Friday is everything you said it wouldbe and more. Lots o love and best wishes ... Brenda andJacinda ... and SAM (our Bike Friday .... as in Uncle Sam-all the way rom the good ol US o A.

    And another rom John Schubert,

    Adventure Cyclist, Feb 2006

In the eleven years since I last road-tested a BikeFriday travel bicycle the marque has evolved in a most

delightul way. Back then, is was a product with anemerging ollowing. Now it is the ocus o a society oworld travelers.

    Wall Street Journal

Long a curiosity, olding bikes are pulling into themainstream....For stability, handling, details (waterbottle) and weight (26.2 lbs.), our testers called it(Bike Friday) best overall .......We cant recall the lasttime a man spent 17 minutes on the phone discussingour needs.

Walter Lapchynski (our resident xie expert) says this: Iveowned my xed gear Friday since spring o 2003. In that time, Iveridden it nearly every day. I have only had to lube the chain and replacetires and tubes. No kidding! Freed rom maintenance hassles andconcerns over what gear to be in, riding is simpler. Its essential. Evenwhen I pedal at high cadence, its incredibly relaxing - a Zen experienceo not doing. In other words, its un again. Its pure, undiluted human-powered motion.

A Bike Friday Fixed Gear, custom-built specically or you, quick-olds into a bag or packs into an airline-checkable suitcase.

What are xed gear Fridays? Elegant simplicity, great or wintertraining and a durable commuter bicycle.

A xed gear bike is a derailleur-less, single-gear machine that does notcoast. Te rear sprocket is xed to the hub. ypically, the one gear isa lowish ratio, so you are spinning at a ast cadence on at roads andnot laboring up climbs. Constant ast pedaling means a better workout especially on short rides like commutes. You stay warmer in coldweather. Your bicycle needs nearly no maintenance.

Te rst ew rides on a xie can be adventures. With time and miles, its charms reveal themselves.

There were quite aew 700c wheel singles on thecourse giving us a hard timeabout our little wheels - but onlyuntil they caught up with usat the next rest stop and theycould not believe the speedwe were able to maintain. Wehave traveled with the bike, bycar and by air, and have hadno problems at all - very easyto hal and put in the backo the car or breakdown intotwo suitcases. Long term travel has made me a minimalist and car-ree or over tenyears. My Bike Friday (Pocket Crusoe Petite) is my limo, my U-haul

and my trusty traveling companion, all olded up in one. When I rst inspected a Bike Friday in Melbourne, Australia, in1996, my reaction was the classic thats too weird! Which might have

been Te End, had my ina urner-loving mother not said, Betterto be looked over than overlooked.

Better than bars, ballroom dancing, bingo ... It was on

my maiden voyage, cycling End to End o Great Britain, when Irealized Id bought more than just a travel bike.Id bought aticket to one o the best social clubs that will have you as a member.I was constantly stopped and invited to linger, laugh and lodge withcomplete strangers, who immediately became riends or lie. Myweird Bike Friday brought precisely the kinds o people I wantedmore o in my lie: People who zag when others zig.

I then tackled Ireland, Costa Rica, Cuba and a good chunk oCentral America, working as an ad writer or Saatchi & Saatchi, aailed waitress, a trainee che, cook and manager o a Costa Ricanhotel, and generally trying new things or oversize. In 2001, I nallydecided to leave the jungle o Costa Rica and join Bike Friday.

Te Evangelist at large. Armed with a simple digital camera,a laptop and my bike, I travel the Bike Friday world providing amini travel channel on the Bike Friday website. Mexico, Peru (with

RAAM champ Lon Haldeman), New York (where I was interviewedby Forbes), Hawaii have all eatured in my writing. Right now, Imon a transcontinental telecommute, home staying with Bike Fridaycustomers!

Its all about the fold. Which brings me to the Bike Fridaycommunity. Bike Friday Clubs (www.bikeriday.com/clubs) areloose-knit groups o Friday owners scattered around the worldor you to meet, ride and do coee with when youre in the area. For someday-Bike Friday owners theyre a great place to ask hardquestions and get a test ride. All bicycles are welcome; Bike Fridayis an inclusive community. And i youd like to start a club in yourarea ... please do!

Bike Friday riders tend to be a riendly, social bunch so it is nosuprise that Bike Friday clubs have popped up all over the world tohelp connect people together on their little wheels. Another thing you can do is go to your photo albumand dig out your avorite pictures rom your avorite trips. Wherewere you? Who were you with? What was the weather like? Whatwas the terrain like? Did your last trip reect what your next tripwill look like? How important are portability and ease o use withrespect to riding speed and other accessories? How much gear doyou like to travel with? Will you be camping with ull gear, or lighttouring with a lunch and a map?

Please call a ravel Consultant today in order to ndout i we can deliver a bike in time or your next trip.

    3. What kind of handlebars do you prefer?Tis is an important question because it gives your travel systems

consultant a good idea o the style and position that you nd most

comortable. When he or she understands your riding posture, yourconsultant will help you navigate through the custom options orgearing, shiting and wheel selection.

    4. What amount of investment are you comfortable

with?I you are like many o our customers, you probably already have a

pretty nice road or o-road touring or perormance bike. Tese bikesoten cost rom $400 to $2,000 and more. Given the unique easy-travel characteristics o your new Bike Friday, you may spend a bitmore to get a bike that eels comparable to your existing one(s).

Teyve built a company to help us enjoy cycling - anywhere onthe planet. You can ride out o the airport or station into Fill inthe blank with any locale you can imagine. You will not be gradedon your spelling. Tanks to the Scholz boys, wander where we may,

we never have to be without our bikes. Tink o it i youd ratherride.

Maynard Hershon on How I met the BikeFriday guys.

I became aware o Green Gear, Bike Fridays old company name, when I saw ads in Velo-News or a cyclo-cross rameset that Hanzand Alan made or a couple o years.

Built to equip impoverished racers and to ride in the mud rather

than hang in a gallery, the no-rills ramesets were all painted red,not a problem. Cause ater a lap or two o suering in the slime, arider couldnt see the color or remember whatitd been beore brown.

Since the new models were cross bikes paintedred, Green Gear called them Red Cross Bikes.I ound the name and the ad text compellinglycharming.

I wrote a letter o praise to Green Gear at theEugene address in the ad. I raved about theirapproach to designing and building the rames, about how appropriate the (enough, no more)specication and construction were or their

intended not-so-glamorous use. And I ravedabout the conversational style o the no-hype ad copy. Reading itwas like listening to an intelligent riend talking. Its still like thatten years later, isnt it, listening to Bike Friday people or reading BFpromotional literature.

Hanz and Alan are my riends now but I elt they were my riendseven then, long beore we met. I recognized them as bike-riders andsensed that we shared a bike-rider mind-set. All else equal, wed ratherbe riding. I youre reading this, you must eel the same way.

Ting is: Hanz and Alan love cycling, but not just their cycling.Tey know that you and I and many o our riends would rather beriding. So they work to make cycling more convenient or all o us

    - or transportation, sport and travel. For anything. So wherever we are, by golly, we can ride. Our bikes go with us.Hanz and Alans bikes are un to ride, aordable and cool. I thinktheyre especially cool because they arent interchangeable with otherbikes. Tey look dierent because they are dierent. Te dierencesarent cosmetic. Teyre not advantages so tiny they can only bemeasured in laboratories. A BF is not just another bicycle.

My girlriend works in a bike shop. Yesterday, she mentioned awoman customer who test-rode two road bikes, an aluminum oneand a carbon ber one, and couldnt see much dierence twixt thetwo. Had that woman been looking at either bike versus a BF, shedhave had distinct alternatives and tangible benets on which to baseher choice.

Bike Fridays provide us the joy and perormance we expect romne bikes, plus usability we dont experience (or even expect) withother, more normal, bikes.

Hanz and Alan wouldve been bored building cookie-cutter bikes.Tey wanted to oer us more than a new paint job, trendy ramematerial or prestige downtube decal to tempt us to choose somethingdierent rom bikes we already own.

Tey wanted to build bikes that perormed like our best high-techlightweights and t us like them too - but also addressed issues oportability, ship-ability and pack-ability.

Ater all, the best bike is the one you can ride today because itsright here with you.

What the heck is Bike Friday all about?

    Dear Cyclists,

Maynard Hershon has created a special place in the

bike world which has enhanced our enjoyment o cycling.

As a bike-biz pro and motorcycle support pilot or many

high-level US races, his perspective is his alone. Hes

toured, trained and noodled with us or three decades

    - wool to Coolmax.

Hes described the special moments in our riding

lives in Winning, VeloNews, the Bicycle Paper and the

Rivendell Reader. His two books are annual re-reads or

    many o us.

Maynards miles on Bike Fridays include a grueling El

Tour de Tucson, a week at PacTours BF Arizona Desert

Camp and a three-week tour in New Zealand.

We at Bike Friday and our buddy Maynard invite you to

    read on and enjoy!

Bike Friday co-oundersAlan and Hanz Scholz

The solution to a travel problem

Alan and Hanz Scholz, Bike Fridays ounders, grew up buildingand racing perormance bikes at a amily-owned shop in Fargo,North Dakota. Te idea o manuacturing a high perormance travelbike crystallized during a trip to Europe when Hanz discovered howpoorly his then state-o-the-art travel bike perormed. With a knack

or bike design, he created a prototype that led to the productiono the original Bike Friday in 1992. Bike Friday soon attractedenthusiastic reviews rom customers and the cycling press. Alan, whoounded the Burley Design Cooperative in the late 1970s, joined hisbrother to produce what has become renowned as one o the worldsleading perormance travel bicycles.

Why the name Bike Friday?Bike Friday was named ater Man Friday, Crusoes trusty

companion in the novel Robinson Crusoe. Eventually the BikeFriday brand name became more recognized than the corporatecompany name, Green Gear Cycling. Te name reminds us that likeRobinsons riend, a Bike Friday is your trusty traveling companion, unobtrusive yet always there, ready to transport you on your everyadventurous whim!
