Paul Johnson, who has led Georgia Tech tosix consecutive bowl games and two ACCChampionship Game appearances while

breaking records with his spread option offense, enters his seventh year with the Yellow Jacketsand his 18th year overall as a head coach.

The only person named ACC Coach of theYear in his first two seasons in the league, John-son has compiled a record of 47-32 in six sea-sons on the Flats. Johnson won more games inhis first six seasons than any coach in GeorgiaTech history.

In 17 years overall as a head coach, with pre-vious stops at Georgia Southern and Navy,Johnson owns a career record of 154-71.Among active FBS coaches, Johnson ranks 12thin career victories and 12th in winning percentage (.684).

The mastermind behind Georgia Tech’s high-octane spread option offense, Johnson’s teamshave ranked in the top six nationally in rushingoffense each of the last six seasons. Since 2008,Georgia Tech has rushed for more yards thanany team in college football. During the past sixseasons combined, the Yellow Jackets haverushed for more than 24,000 yards — or theequivalent of 13.8 miles.

Last season Georgia Tech finished 7-6 over-all, 5-3 in the ACC, beating eventual Coastal Division champion Duke for the 10th straightseason and topping Coastal rival North Carolinafor the fifth consecutive year. The Yellow Jacketsrecorded two shutouts — 56-0 vs. ACC new-comer Syracuse and 70-0 vs. Elon — the firsttime since 1985 that Tech pitched two shutoutsin one season.

While Tech advanced to a bowl game for the17th consecutive season, the Jackets were aplay or two away from double-digit victories.Tech had the ball with a chance to tie or takethe lead in the fourth quarter of losses to Vir-ginia Tech, Miami and Georgia.

Tech finished ranked in the top 10 in eightdifferent national statistical categories, includingsixth in rushing offense.

In 2012, Georgia Tech struggled to a 2-4 start, which included a pair of heart-breaking overtime

losses to ACC Coastal Division rivals VirginiaTech and Miami. But the Yellow Jackets turnedit around during the second half of the season, erupting for 68 points at North Carolina en routeto winning four straight conference games. Bythe time the dust cleared in late November, Techwas crowned Coastal Division champion andplayed in the ACC Championship Game.

Statistically, the Yellow Jackets producedmore yards of total offense and rushed for moreyards than any team in school history, and aver-aged a school-record 40.0 points per game inconference play. The 7-7 season culminatedwith an upset win over Southern California, 21-7, in the Hyundai Sun Bowl.

In 2011, Georgia Tech exceeded all expecta-tions. After being picked to finish fourth in theACC Coastal Division, the Yellow Jackets went 8-5, 5-3 in the ACC. With just 10 scholarship sen-iors on the roster, Tech bolted to a 6-0 start, set-ting school, ACC and NCAA records for offensealong the way, and rising to as high as 13th in thenational polls. In October, the Jackets handedsixth-ranked and eventual ACC champion Clem-son a 31-17 home loss, a win that eventuallyhelped Tech earn a bid to the Sun Bowl.

In 2010, the Yellow Jackets — who lost fourjuniors to the 2010 NFL Draft and played the

Paul Johnson’s 154 wins place him 12thamong active FBS head coaches.

final four games without injured quarterbackJoshua Nesbitt — finished 4-4 in the ACC andled the nation in rushing offense for the firsttime in school history. Two Yellow Jackets —senior center Sean Bedford and senior runningback Anthony Allen — were named first-teamAll-ACC in 2010.

The 2009 season was one of the most mem-orable in Yellow Jacket history despite fieldingone of the youngest rosters in college football(just six scholarship seniors).

After a mid-September loss at nationally rankedMiami when the Yellow Jackets played their thirdgame in a 12-day span, Tech reeled off eight con-secutive victories including a 5-0 record in Octo-ber when it played four road games. A convincing49-10 win at Duke on Nov. 14, clinched the ACCCoastal Division crown, then Tech defeated Clem-son for a second time, this time in the ACC Cham-pionship Game in Tampa, Fla. That game waslater vacated due to NCAA sanctions.

Tech, which reached a national ranking as highas seventh, played in the FedEx Orange Bowl, its first appearance in a major bowl game since1962. Along the way, the Yellow Jackets rolledup mind-boggling numbers on offense, rankingsecond nationally in rushing offense (295.4 ypg)and third in time of possession (33:49).

Prior to the start of the 2008 season, SportsIllustrated projected Georgia Tech to finish 3-9and the ACC media picked the Yellow Jacketsto finish fourth in the Coastal Division. However,Johnson directed Tech to a 9-4 record, a shareof the Coastal Division title and a Chick-fil-ABowl berth. Johnson’s first Yellow Jacket teambeat three nationally ranked opponents —Florida State, Miami and Georgia — during thefinal four games of the regular season. The winover Georgia snapped a seven-game losingstreak to Tech’s in-state rival.

Johnson’s first season at Georgia Tech wasremarkable for a number of reasons. Not onlydid he and his staff install completely new offensive and defensive schemes, but Johnsoninherited one of the nation’s youngest rosters, which included 76 freshmen and sophomores. The last one-third of the season, 16 of Tech’s 22

starters were freshmen or sophomores. He alsotook over a program low in scholarship num-bers, well below the maximum of 85, the linger-ing effects of distant NCAA penalties.

Johnson, a native of Newland, N.C., earnedhis bachelor’s degree in physical education fromWestern Carolina in 1979 and a master’s degreein health and physical education from Appalachian State in 1982. He and wife, Susan, are the parents of a daughter, Kaitlyn.

Georgia Tech’s storied football facilityhas been a cornerstone of collegefootball for more than 100 years.

Cozily nestled amid Atlanta’s skyscrapers,Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field iseasily one of the nation’s most unique settingsfor college football.

Last fall, Georgia Tech celebrated GrantField’s 100th anniversary. Originally built in1913 by members of the Georgia Tech studentbody, Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic GrantField is the oldest on-campus stadium in NCAADivision I-A (FBS).

Georgia Tech’s football facility was knownas Grant Field until April 1988, when the Geor-gia State Board of Regents voted to add thename Bobby Dodd Stadium in honor of thelegendary coach who guided the RamblingWreck to its most illustrious football era. Amember of the National Football FoundationCollege Football Hall of Fame, Dodd com-piled a 165-64-8 record from 1945-66, and tutored 21 All-Americans as he led Tech to 13bowl trips during his 22-year stay as headcoach. Dodd served as Tech’s director of ath-letics from 1951-76 and then worked as a con-sultant for the alumni association until hisdeath in 1988, for a 57-year association withthe Institute.

The name change was the first for the facilitysince it was named Hugh Inman Grant Field in1914 after a gift from John W. Grant, a memberof the Tech Board of Trustees and a well-knownAtlanta merchant. The Grant family did not givethe land on which Grant Field is built. However, they did give the initial $15,000 used in 1913 tobuild the first permanent concrete stands on thewest side of the field. In gratitude for the gift, the Board of Trustees named the field Hugh

Inman Grant Field in memory of Grant’s deceased son.

The students who built Grant Field more than100 years ago wouldn’t recognize the home ofGeorgia Tech football if they saw it now. Notonly has the skyline around the stadiumchanged dramatically, but the facility has steadilygrown and improved during its rich history.

Tech actually began playing football on thissite in 1905, but in 1913, the original concreteWest Stands were built by Tech students andseated 5,600.

In the 101 autumns since Grant Field waserected, legends from Clint Castleberry toGeorge Morris to Joe Hamilton to Calvin John-son have played here, and Paul Johnson joinscoaching giants such as John Heisman andDodd in patrolling the Grant Field sideline.

Four national title teams and 15 conferencechampions have showcased their skills on theFlats, and Grant Field was the site of one of themost famous games played, Tech’s 222-0 winover Cumberland in 1916.

Today’s Bobby Dodd Stadium seats 55,000fans in a modern, comfortable facility that embraces the tradition that has made Tech’svenerable stadium a cornerstone of collegefootball for nearly a century.

Tech TradiTionsRAMBLIN’ WRECK FIGHT SONG

2 2 R A M B L I N W R E C K . C O M

G E O R G I A T E C H F O O T B A L L F A N G U I D E2 0 1 4

The Georgia Tech fight song grew outof an old folk ballad, “The Sons ofthe Gamboliers.”

Howard D. Cutter, a member of Tech’sfirst graduating class (Mechanical Engineer-ing, 1892), wrote in the November-December 1942 issue of the Georgia TechAlumnus that the “Ramblin’ Wreck” had itsorigins during the first two years after Techopened in 1888, inspired when the entirestudent body traveled to Athens to seeTech’s baseball team defeat Georgia.

By the early 1900s, “Ramblin’ Wreck”was an established tradition. The earliestexisting published version of the song appeared in the Blueprint, the Institute’syearbook, in 1908.

In 1910, Michael A. Greenblatt, Tech’sfirst bandmaster, discovered the band play-ing “Ramblin’ Wreck” to the tune of “Sonsof the Gamboliers,” and made his firstarrangement of the song in the form of ahandwritten manuscript.

When Frank Roman succeeded Green-blatt as bandmaster in 1911, he wrote anew adaptation of “Ramblin’ Wreck” accompanied by many trumpet flourishes, that became nationally known. His is theversion that continues to be popular today.

The fame of the song spread to suchproportions that in 1959 it was sung byRichard Nixon and Nikita Khrushchev attheir historic face-to-face meeting in Moscow.

In 1984, the law firm of Newton, Hopkins& Ormsby investigated the copyright of“Ramblin’ Wreck” and found that a numberof people have had various versions of thesong copyrighted. The original version of

the song is in the public domain and canbe played without payment of royalties.

WHITE AND GOLD

In the fall of 1891, before Georgia Tech organized a football team of its own, a gamewas scheduled between Auburn and Geor-gia. A rivalry was already established inbaseball between Tech and Georgia, so Techstudents were invited to the game to cheer,of course, for Auburn.

The students appointed a committee torecommend colors to be worn and cheers tobe used at the game. The committee sug-gested white and gold, and about 200 stu-dents attended wearing those colors.

In 1893, when Georgia Tech’s footballteam played Georgia for the first time, agroup of young women from the Lucy CobbInstitute for Girls attended the game tocheer for Tech, dressed in white and gold.

I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of

an engineer,

A helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva, hell of an engineer,

Like all the jolly good fellows, I drink my whiskey clear,

I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of

an engineer.

Oh, if I had a daughter, sir, I’d dress her in White and Gold,

And put her on the campus, to cheer the brave and bold.

But if I had a son, sir, I’ll tell you what he’d do.

He would yell, “To Hell with Georgia,” like his daddy

used to do.

Oh, I wish I had a barrel of rum and sugar three

thousand pounds,

A college bell to put it in and a clapper to stir it around.

I’d drink to all good fellows who come from far and near.

I'm a ramblin’, gamblin’, hell of an engineer.
