NCAA DIVISION III

In 2013, Covenant became full members of the NCAA Division III following a four year transitional period from 2009-2013.

The largest division, in terms of number of schools and number of participants, is Division III comprised by more than 170,000 student-athletes at 444 mostly smaller institutions.

Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes

the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps student-athletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Student-athletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general student-body, keeping them focused on being a student first.

The college experience is a time of learning and growth — a chance to follow passions and develop potential. For student-athletes in Division III, all of this happens most importantly in the classroom and through earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides for passionate participation in a competitive athletic environment, in which student-athletes push themselves to excellence and build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills. And student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience.

The Three D’s:

DiscoverDivision III student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play…to discover themselves.

DevelopDivision III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the Division III experience.

DedicateDivision III institutions expect student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Student-athletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.

SCOTLAND YARDHOME OF THE SCOTS

Built in 1989, Scotland Yard is home to both the men’s and women’s soccer programs at Covenant. The field, located in the southern part of the campus just past Ashe Activity Center, is of maximum regulation dimensions (118 yards by 70 yards). Scotland Yard boasts cement bleachers, along with two newer sets of metal stands, and a retaining wall which provides additionalfan seating.

Across from the north-side bleachers, are the team and press areas on the south side of the field. Both teams sit in covered bench areas. During the summer of 2008, the field was com-pletely overhauled by installing a drainage system and sprinkler system. Also a crowning of the field was performed and a sand base was put in place for better drainage. Lights were installed for the first time before the 2010 season.

The inaugural match held at Scotland Yard pitted Covenant against Indiana University-Pur-due University at Indianapolis (IUPUI) on September 2, 1989. The Scots came out with a 1-0 victory over the Metros on that day and would finish the opening season at Scotland Yard with a 7-1-1 home record.

The field has seen some historical matches as well. Former men’s soccer head coach Brian Crossman, a future NAIA hall of famer, registered his 300th career victory at Scotland Yard during the 2004 season. Current women’s soccer head coach Mark Duble recorded his 200th coaching win in 2012 at the Yard. Scotland Yard has played host to numerous conference tournament and regional tournament matches in its 24 years of existence.

The men’s soccer team averaged 503 fans per home match in the 2013 season. In 2012, Cov-enant ranked 15th in all of NCAA Division III men’s soccer in attendance averaging 437 fans

per match, including a season-high 1,300 for the Homecoming contest.

Nathan Pifer Head CoachNathan Pifer will enter into his sixth season at the helm of

Covenant’s men’s soccer program in 2014. He is the fifth

coach in the history of Covenant men’s soccer since 1968

(John Miglarese, Dr. Brian Crossman, Dave Fortosis and

Walter Bowman).

Throughout his career, Pifer has earned championship

success as a head coach at both the intercollegiate and

interscholastic levels.

After graduating from Covenant in 1984, Pifer had

successful coaching stints at Montreat-Anderson and King,

before taking the head men’s job at Midwestern State

University in Wichita Falls, Texas. At Midwestern State, Pifer

took his teams to the NAIA national tournament in his first seven seasons, and finished as the National Runner-Up

in 1991 and 1995. He was nominated for NAIA National Coach of the Year in 1987, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995,

and 1996.

MSU then moved to NCAA Division II status, and his team didn’t miss a beat, breaking into the Division II Top 25 in

its inaugural campaign and in the following 1998 season with a ranking as high as #15 in the nation. In 1999, MSU

finished 14-5-2 and won the Lone Star Conference championship. In his 10 years as the men’s coach at MSU, Pifer

was 164-61-13.

In 1996, MSU asked Pifer to take over the helm of the women’s soccer program in addition to his work with the

men’s team, and he built the women’s team into a program that won the Lone Star Conference for two consecutive

seasons. His success in the women’s game then led him to take over as the head women’s soccer coach at the

University of Tennessee at Martin in 2000. The Skyhawks had been 3-34 in their first two years of existence, but

Pifer vastly improved the program and led the team to consecutive 9-7-2 seasons in 2002 and 2003.

After six seasons at UT-Martin, Pifer moved to Christian Academy of Knoxville, where he served as the school’s

Assistant Principal and girls’ soccer coach. In his three seasons as CAK’s head coach, Pifer and the Warriors

won state championships in 2006 and 2008, and just missed-out on a third title in 2007 when the team lost a

heartbreaking four-overtime game to Chattanooga Christian School in penalty kicks. After three seasons he had

rung up a very impressive 64-6-3 record and was named the Prep-Xtra Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2008.

During his time at Covenant, Pifer has amassed a 56-39-10 record over five seasons. His first season, the Scots went

13-6-2 and placed third at the NCCAA national tournament. The following year (2010), Covenant was 14-8-1 overall

and again made a trip to the NCCAA national tournament this time as the No. 1 seed.

In 2013, Covenant’s first year in the USA South Athletic Conference, Pifer’s team went 11-5-4 overall and 5-3-1 in

conference play. The Scots had five players selected to the All-Conference team.

At Covenant, he has coached three NCCAA All-Americans (Julian Allgeier -- twice -- and Chris Pifer) while having

five players on honorable mention. In addition, Pifer has had 18 NCCAA Scholar-Athletes during his tenure.

Pifer earned a Master of Art in Education from Western Carolina University in 1989, and an Education Specialist

degree in Instructional Leadership from Tennessee Tech University in 2008.

He and his wife, Angie, have been married for 30 years and have two sons, David, who played for the Scots’ soccer

team from 2007-10, and Chris, who played for the Scots from 2009-12.

Scott Bosgraf Full-time Assistant & Head JV Coach

Scott Bosgraf will enter his first year as a full-time assistant for head

coach Nathan Pifer in the 2014 season after five seasons of being a

part-time assistant.

“I feel very blessed to have an opportunity to work full-time at Cov-

enant College and specifically with the men’s soccer program,” said

Bosgraf. “Covenant soccer has a great tradition both on and off the

field and I look forward to working with coach Pifer and the returning

and incoming players.”

Bosgraf is no stranger to the Covenant men’s soccer program. He

played for the Scots from 1985-88, under longtime head coach Brian

Crossman, and graduated in 1989. In his senior year, Bosgraf was a

team captain, an All-NAIA District 24 and All-South third team selec-

tion while ranking 17th in the country in assists per game. In the late

1990s, he returned to be an assistant coach under Crossman through

the 2004 season. After a short stint away from the program, Bosgraf

came back to Covenant in 2009 as the goalkeeper coach for Pifer and

held that position through the 2013 season.

He has been active in the coaching field at various levels for many

years. Bosgraf is currently the head coach for the Chattanooga FC Club team and an assistant at Baylor School in

Chattanooga. From 2009-11, he was an assistant for Crossman with Chattanooga FC. Bosgraf was a head coach at

East Ridge Soccer Association from 2009-12 and led his U18 Boys team to a Division II state championship in 2011.

Additionally, he has served as a coach, board member and director for the Lookout Mountain Soccer Association.

“Coach Nathan Pifer and Dr. Brian Crossman have had a great impact for Christ on many lives, including mine, and I

greatly anticipate carrying that work on as a member of the coaching staff here at Covenant,” added Bosgraf.

He and his wife, Lansing, live on Lookout Mountain, Georgia and will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in

August. The couple has three children, Alexandra (21), Hamilton (20, attending Covenant this fall) and Mya (15).

They are members of Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church.

Experienced Scots Look for Breakout Season

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- In his sixth season at the helm of his alma mater, head coach Nathan Pifer believes he

has his best team yet. The 2014 version of the Covenant men’s soccer team features plenty of experienced players

mixed in with newcomers looking to make an immediate impact.

The Scots open their season on Friday at the Sonny Carter Invitational in Atlanta, Georgia against traditional

Division III power Rutgers-Newark.

The Scots were picked to finish fourth in the USA South’s preseason poll, while receiving one first place vote. Last

season, Covenant finished fourth in the regular season but had its season come to an early end in the USA South

tournament first round with a loss to Averett in a shootout.

“We were picked to finish in the top five,” said Pifer of his preseason ranking. “But I feel like we are going to be one

of the top teams in the league. We are ready to compete for a conference championship.”

Although the Scots lost four key seniors off last year’s 11-5-4 team, they return 16 players and six starters, including

all three of the top scorers, from a year ago. All told, Covenant will have nine seniors on its roster this season. In

addition, Pifer picked up a couple players in his recruiting class that could play a major role early on.

Three seniors, Snoopy Davidson, Hudson Brock and Joel Friesen, scored six goals apiece last season and all three

return this year. Although he battled an injury throughout the year in 2013, Davidson was still the biggest scoring

threat for the Scots and was selected to the USA South All-Conference first team. The transfer from South Carolina

accumulated six goals and five assists, which tied for the team lead, in 11 matches. Davidson had a stretch of five

goals and three assists over three matches last year that propelled him to USA South and NSCAA player of the week

honors.

“Snoopy was hurt for a majority of the season last year,” noted Pifer. “We hope to have him completely healthy this

season and are very excited about what he can do.”

Brock and Friesen also return after breakout seasons a year ago. Brock started all 20 matches last season and

registered his first career hat trick in a 5-0 win at LaGrange. Friesen tied for the team lead in points with 17 as he

recorded six goals and five assists. Pifer also expects big things from junior Mike Arango. In his first season at

Covenant last year, Arango scored four times and presented a threat to opponents with his speed and agility.

Other returners this year include seniors Ian Meredith, David Huertas and Danny Knight, along with juniors Noah

Wiersema and Andrew Lowe, and sophomore Caleb Allen.

Defensively, the Scots look to be strong once again. Senior leader Hunter Harrison returns, as does his twin brother

Russell Harrison, to go along with senior Roy Anderson on the backline. As a unit, Covenant allowed 23 goals with

six shutouts in 2013. Hunter Harrison scored twice last season and was named to the NSCAA All-South Atlantic

region third team.

The goalkeeper position will feature a new face this season as Shuler Polk has graduated. Three keepers are on

the roster with junior Daniel Kubin having the most experience. Redshirt sophomore Jacob Richter and freshman

Jonathan Crossman will also vie for playing time at the net this year.

The seniors are the leaders of this team and have been through a lot as a group during their time in Scots jerseys.

“These are godly young men who want to play hard and glorify God at the same time,” added Pifer. “The senior

class has been this way consistently though their years here and it has been fun to be a part of.”

Lookout Mountain natives highlight the incoming recruiting class for Pifer. Builder Brock, brother of Hudson,

comes in as a senior and hopes to strengthen the backline even further. Hunter Brock, cousin of both Hudson and

Builder, will “add speed and attacking ability,” according to Pifer. Crossman was an All-State keeper at Chattanooga

Christian and should compete for playing time. All three players call the Mountain home and have strong family

ties to the college.

The entire freshman class includes Nate Mackey (Rutherfordton, N.C.), Andrew Jablon (Orlando, Fla.), Mark Sharrar

(Garner, N.C.), Isaac Johnson (Madison, Ala.), John O’Carroll (Houston, Texas) and Morgan Copeland (Fredericksburg,

Va.).

After a weekend trip to Atlanta, the Scots will open up the home portion of their schedule with the David Taaffe

Invitational on Sept. 5-6. Four matches will take place over two days at Scotland Yard with the host Scots facing

Wilmington on Friday at 7 p.m. and Millsaps on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Dedicated to the Memory of David Taaffe

In the summer of 2013, the Covenant College community lost one of its beloved members, David Taaffe.

David was an example of a player that glorified God in his actions on and off the field. He respected his opponents, loved his teammates and lived for Jesus. His leadership,

love and dedication will live in our hearts forever. Thank you, David. We miss you and will always remember you and are confident we will see you again.

44 MEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE 2014 COVENANT COLLEGE

Dealing with the tragic loss of a beloved teammate, the Covenant men’s soccer team bonded during the 2013 season and ended the year with an 11-5-4 overall record with a 5-3-1 mark in USA South play.

Before the season began, the team dealt with the loss of rising junior David Taaffe. Taaffe passed away in July due to injuries sustained in a fall while hiking in Switzer-land. The squad dedicated the season in Taaffe’s honor with several tributes, including wearing practice shirts with Taaffe’s name and number six on the back and head coach Nathan Pifer keeping Taaffe on the official game roster for officials and scorers.

The first home match of the year was another tribute to Taaffe’s life as the team honored his family before the contest. After the match ended, a 1-1 draw with Sewanee, the capacity crowd at Scotland Yard joined in singing with the team the hymn “It Is Well With My Soul,” leaving very few dry eyes at the conclusion.

“I feel our team grew a lot this year through many circumstances,” said Pifer, who concluded his fifth year at the helm of the program. “We had a rough start emo-tionally with losing David Taaffe but saw God’s gracious-ness to us as it bonded us together in Christ and gave us a stronger appreciation for each other.”

As the season progressed, the team picked up big non-conference wins over Berry, Birmingham South-ern, and Emory all by 2-1 scores. The victory over Berry marked the first time in 11 years that the Scots defeated the Vikings, while the win over Emory was the first one in 33 years.

Covenant was picked to finish fifth in the preseason USA South standings, but the Scots did one spot better than that.

The Scots were just 2-2 in conference play heading into the second week of October. Junior transfer Snoopy Davidson then took over the three matches during that week.

Davidson scored five goals and assisted on three oth-ers to lead the Scots to a non-conference win at Emory & Henry, a 2-2 draw against Methodist, and a 5-1 Home-coming win over North Carolina Wesleyan. For his efforts, Davidson was named USA South Player of the Week and NSCAA Player of the Week for Division III.

Covenant wrapped up the regular season with wins at Averett (3-0) and at home on Senior Night against Piedmont (3-0) to clinch a home-field match in the open-ing round of the USA South tournament. Facing Averett for the second time in eight days in the tournament, Covenant fell in penalty kicks to be eliminated.

“We definitely fell short of our goal for a conference championship but we did gain confidence through some great results against teams like Berry and Emory,” added Pifer. “With our disappointment of not moving on in the playoffs we as a team are hungry for next season and have already started working for next year.”

Juniors Hudson Brock, Davidson, and Joel Friesen led the offensive attack with six goals apiece for the season. Brock had his first career hat trick in a 5-0 win at La-Grange. Davidson and Friesen each added a team-high five assists. Senior Garrison Dale had a strong finish to the year as he had three goals in the final two regular season matches, and five for the year.

Senior goalkeeper Shuler Polk was stellar again for the Scots as he started all 20 matches and allowed 20 goals in 1823 minutes (0.99 goals against average) while mak-ing 88 saves, third most in the USA South. Junior Hunter Harrison was once again the anchor for the Covenant back line.

On Senior Night, the Scots said farewell to seniors Bar-rett Schmidt, Matt Hudnut, and Dale.

2013 also saw more large crowds at Scotland Yard. Covenant averaged 503 fans per match and a total of 4,525 people took in the nine home matches. The sea-son’s largest crowd again occurred on Homecoming as 1,200 people were in attendance to watch the Scots take down North Carolina Wesleyan 5-1.

Parents/Boosters/Alumni/FansAre you a Booster?

A booster is an individual that:

• Promotes Covenant athletics program.• Makes a financial contribution to Covenant athletics or its booster organizations.• Assists in the recruitment of prospects for Covenant.• Provides benefits (e.g., jobs, occasional meals) to enrolled student-athletes.Once a booster.....Always a booster. It is important to remember that once an individual has been identified as a booster, he or she retains that status forever.

If you have questions whether you are considered a booster of Covenant Athletics or if you have questions about what you may or may not do as a booster, please feel free to contact the Compliance Office at [email protected].

What is an extra benefit?

Fans and boosters may not provide anything to prospects or currently enrolled student-athletes (or their families) without prior approval from the Compliance Office. If a student-athlete and/or his or her family accepts any benefits of special consideration (e.g., transportation, clothing, money, meals, etc.) based on his or her athletic skill, the student-athlete will lose his or her eligibility and Covenant will be subject to NCAA penalties.

Extra benefits can include, but, are not limited to:

• Money, gifts, clothing, tickets for entertainment, haircut, and use of a car.• Free or reduced-cost room or board anywhere.• Free or reduced-cost merchandise or services.• Use of Athletics Department copy/fax machines, long distance telephone services or free use of a cell phone.• Typing or editing reports, papers, letters, etc. for a student-athlete.• A loan of money or the consigning of a note to arrange a loan.• The sale or trade of complimentary admissions for merchandise, services or debt repayment.• The sale or trade of ANY items a student-athlete has received for his or her participation in athletics (e.g., gear, clothing, awards). This list is not exhaustive. Please refrain from offering prospects and/or current student-athletes and their families and friends anything that is not available to all students or the general public.
