Asthespringseasonapproaches,theRutgersmen’sgolfteamanxiouslyawaitsthechancetogetbackoutonthelinks.UndertheguidanceofsecondyearheadcoachRobShutte,theScarletKnightswentbacktothebasicsintheiroff-seasontraining.

Duetothecolderclimatethroughoutthewintermonths,theteamspentmostoftheirtimeindoorsimprovingtheirmentaltoughnessandperfectingcru-cialfundamentals.TheScarletKnightsconcentratedonworkoutsthatforcedthemtofaceadversity.Bylearningtostay100%focusedthroughoutchal-lenges,theplayerswillbeabletoremaincomposediffacedwithatightsituationinaroundofcompetition.

Alongwithstrengtheningtheirminds,theScarletKnightsfocusedonsharpeningtheirtechnique.TheteambenefitedgreatlyfromacoursesimulatorsetupintheHaleCenter.Thesimulatorallowedtheplay-erstofocusstrictlyontheirshotsandtempowhileavoidingthecoldweatherandanyotherdistractingelements.Thistrainingtrulyenabledtheteamtogetbacktothebasics.

“Whenyoutakeawaytherestofthelandwhereyouwouldnormallyhittheball,whenyoustripthat[land]awayitcanbereallygood,”CoachShutteexplained.

“Itendsupbringingitbacktojustfocusingonyouandtheballandsomeofthosefundamentalthings,whichareverybasic,yetreallymatter.Wheneveryoustartaddingthecourse,addingtherangeitcantakeyouawayfromthosefundamentals.”

Thefallseasonhighlightedthestrengthsthateachplayercanbringinspringcompetition.JuniorJona-thanRenza(CortlandManor,N.Y.)cameonstronglaterintheseason,settingacourserecordintheWatervilleCollegiateClassic.ThetournamenttookplaceontheWatervilleLinks,oneofIreland’smostchallengingcourses.

ShowingconsistencythroughouttheentirefallfortheScarletKnights,werejuniorDougWalters(Blair-stown,N.J.)andsophomoreJacobStockl(Clark,N.J.).Waltersfinishedinthetop20offourtourna-

ments,tyingforthirdattheLehighInvitationalandforfifthattheRutgersInvitational.Stocklmaintaineda76strokeaverageacrossfourtournaments.

JuniorDillonCorbo(Montville,N.J.)andsophomoreHyungMoKim(Norwood,N.J.)bringlotsoftalenttolinksaswell.Eachcompetedinfourevents,playing11roundsfortheScarletKnights.

Asafreshman,JonathanChang(Valencia,Calif.)hadastandoutseason.Competinginallfiveevents,Changshowedhispotentialaftercardinga212(71-68-71)toplacethirdoutof83-competitorsattheRutgersInvitational.

BepreparedtoseecertainfirepowercometolightwhenseniorJohnFagan(Flemington,NJ)andfreshmanLouisBodine(Flemington,N.J.)returntocompetition.

Enteringthespringseason,theScarletKnightswillfocusonstayinginthemomentandhavingcon-fidenceintheexecutionoftheirshots.Theteampushedasideresult-orientedexpectationstofocusmainlyonpreparation.

“Wearelearninghowtohavezeroexpectationswhatsoeverthatrelatetospecificperformance.Although,wedohaveexpectationswhenitcomestoourpreparationandoureffort,”CoachShutteexplained.

“Wereallyjustwantittobeaboutthepreparation.Ifwearereallypreparedtowin,thenthewinswilltakecareofthemselves.”

Theteam’spreparationwillbeputtothetestwhentheystarttheseasonMarch16,2013downinPortSt.Lucie,Fla.attheMissionInnSpringSpectacular.AftertheC&FBankIntercollegiatetournamentinWilliamsburg,Va.,theteamwilltraveltoMarylandfortheTowsonInvitational.TheteamwrapsuptheseasonattheRutherfordIntercollegiatetournamentinStateCollege,Pa.,beforeheadingtotheBIGEASTChampionship.TheChampionshipissettotakeplaceApril28-30inOrlando,Fla.

RobShutteisinhissecondseasonasheadmen’sgolfcoachatRutgersUni-versity.Hehaseightyearsofcollegiateheadcoachingexperience,includingtwoseasonsasheadwomen’sgolfcoachatLehighUniversity.“WearethrilledtowelcomeRob,CaitlinandCharlietotheRutgersAthleticsfamily,”saidDirectorofAthleticsTimPernettionFebruary14,2012,the

dateoftheappointment.“Robwillbringgreatstrengthstoourmen’sgolfprogramwithhishighenergy,excellentcoachinganddevelopmentskills,andafocusonthebalancebetweenacademicsandathletics.”

“ThemissionoftheRutgersUniversityDepartmentofAthleticsisperfectlyinlinewithmyowncorevaluesandbeliefs,”saidShutte.“Itisagreatopportunityformetopursueapassionofmine,whichisdevelopingyoungmenintobetterplayers,peopleandleadersthroughthegameofgolf.TheBIGEASTisaverycompetitiveconfer-ence,andwillonlyimprovewiththeadditionsofUCF,SMU,HoustonandMemphis.Ifyouwanttobethebest,youneedtobeabletocompeteagainstthebest.”

WiththeMountainHawks,Shuttedirectedtheteamtoitsfirst-evertournamentvictoryatthe2011SunshineSpringInvitational.Intheclassroom,hissquadmaintaineda3.25cumulativegradepointaver-ageduringhistenure.

PriortohisarrivalinLehigh,Shutteservedasheadmen’sgolfcoachatMuhlenbergCollegeinAllentown,Pa.from2005to2009.TheMuleshadthreetournamentvictoriesandwererunneruponfouroccasionsduringhistenure.Inadditiontoatrioofindividualtourneytitles,ZachOyergraduatedwiththelowestcareerstrokeaveragein

over15years.His2006squadboasteda3.23gradepointaverage,highestamongmen’sathleticprograms.

APGAClass“A”member,Shuttehasstrongtiestothemetropolitanregion.HeservedasAssistantGolfProfessionalatArcolaCountryClubinParamus,N.J.in2003afterworkingasaProgramAdministra-torandTeachingGolfProfessionalatFirstTeeofMetropolitanNewYorkintheBronxin2002.

Offthecourse,ShuttehasbalancedhiscareerbyservingasVicePresidentofIndependentFinancialAdvisorsinEaston,Pa.since2004.HehasalsohostedtworadioshowsontheESPNRadioaf-filiateinAllentown,TheWaterCoolerRadioShowandTheCaddieShackRadioProgram.Inthewinter,hehasvolunteeredasassistantvarsityboys’basketballatNotreDame-GreenPondHighSchool.

Shutte(pronouncedSHOOT-e)earnedabachelor’sdegreeinparksandrecreationmanagementfromPennStateUniversityin2003.DuringhistimeinUniversityPark,hereceivedboththeDisneyWorldandAugieBoydGolfScholarships.

Shutte,whohailsfromaRutgersfamily,andhiswifeCaitlinaretheproudparentsofayoungsonnamedCharlie(Nov.1,2011).Hisfather,Bob,wasathree-yearvarsityfootballletterwinneratRutgersfrom1969-71,playingdefensiveback,widereceiverandkicker.Hewasalsoathree-yearletterwinneronthebaseballdiamond,playingthirdbaseandshortstopfrom1970-72.Hismother,Catherine,isaRutgersgraduateandwasastudentsportswriterwiththeDailyTargumasanundergrad.

rUTGErS MEN’S GOLF hISTOrYTheRutgersmen’sgolfteamhascompetedintheprestigiousBIGEASTConferencesince1995.In2004,themen’steamwasvictori-ousinfourfalleventsandcompetedintheNCAAChampionshipsinthespringof2005,markingthefirsttimesince1984theScarletKnightsadvancedtotheNCAA’s.Followingthehistoric2004-05season,RutgersheadcoachMauraBallardwasnamedthe2005BIGEASTMen’sGolfCoachoftheYear.“Iamflatteredtohavereceivedthishonor,”saidWatersatthetime.“ThisisthemosttalentedteamI’vehadandithasbeenaveryexcitingyear.ThisgrouphasworkedextremelyhardandIamveryproudofthem.”TheRutgersmen’sgolfprogramhasproducedanumberoftopplayersinitslongandproudhistory.CurrentprofessionalswhostarredatRutgersincludeBillKing(SpringLakeGolfClub),FrankEsposito(BrooklakeCountryClub),MarkGiuliano(FairmountCountryClub),JimMrva(MonroeGolfClub,Rochester,NY),JohnFagan(RaritanValleyCountryClub),andJohnSchob(HuntingtonCrescentClub,Huntington,NY).Rutgershasalsoproduceditsshareoftopamateurplayers,includingBobMarzoli,the1971MGAchampion,two-timeAll-AmericanJamesGuerra,BarryWiseman,BruceYoung,RyanMacDonaldandBrentPittman,tonameafew.TwomenwhoplayedacentralroleintheevolutionandhistoryofRutgersGolfareformerlong-timeheadcoachFredGruningerandformerheadprofessionalArtDeBlasio.Gruninger,wholaterwentontoservealongtenureasRU’sathleticdirector,wasahighly-success-fulheadcoachatRutgers,leadingtheScarletKnightstoa109-30-2recordbetween1963and1972.ArtDeBlasio,theRutgersheadprofrom1966-2001,assistedwithboththemen’sandwomen’steamsduringhis35years“OntheBanks.”

rUTGErS UNIVErSITY GOLF COUrSETheRutgersUniversityGolfCoursewasfoundedin1961withtheconstructionofthepresentday18-holelayoutthatwasexpertlydesignedbyHalPurdy,anotedgolfarchitect.ThecoursewasofficiallyopenedMay29,1963.Today,thepar-71RutgersGolfCourse(par-72forwomen)canbestretchedto6,337yardsandfeaturesacourseratingof70.5andaslopeof130.Overthepastdecade,theRutgersGolfCoursehasundergoneextensiverenovationsandupdates,whichincludeamodernirrigationsystem,theadditionofseveralbunkersandtheplantingofmanytrees,includingahostofimpressiveever-greens.Oncearatherwide-opentract,today’sRutgersGolfCoursefeaturesahostoftree-linedholes,featuringundulatinggreensandwaterthatcomesintoplayonfiveholes.AroundofgolfattheRutgersGolfCourseoffersapanoramicviewofaplethoraofacademicbuild-ings,includingtheworldfamousWaksmanInstituteofMicrobiology,astatelystructurethatreststotheleftofthefirstfairway.EverygolferwhoenjoystheRutgersGolfCoursecanalsogazeatseveralathletic-relatedcomplexes.TotheleftofthefifthandsixthholeoffersaviewoftheIndoorBubble,inwhichtheRutgersfootballteamtrainsduringinclementweather.RisingmajesticallytotheleftofthesixthgreenisRutgersStadium,thehomeoftheScarletKnightfootballteam.TheRutgersGolfCoursefeaturesanewly-expandeddrivingrange,anda12,000squarefootshortgamepracticefacilityandputtinggreen.JillJerauld,aformerFuturesTourandEuropeanTourplayer,joinedtheRutgersUniversityGolfCourseastheCoursePro/ManagerinNovember2001.SheistheonlyfemaleProfessionalGolfAssociation(PGA)-certifiedheadprointhestateofNewJersey.For10yearspriortojoiningRutgersUniversityGolfCourse,shewastheheadproatBlueberryHillGolfCourseinRussell,PA.SinceJerauldtookovermanagementoftheRutgersUniversityGolfCourse,shehassuccess-fullyimplementedapace-of-playsystemthathasdecreasedthetimeofanaverageroundofgolfbyasmuchasonehour.DID YOU KNOW?EveryholeattheRutgersGolfCourseisnamedforatreethatcanbefoundonthecourseandthatthepar-311thhole,namedSourGum,ishometotheoldestJapanesesourgumtreeinthestate.

RobertL.Barchiisthe20thpresidentofRutgers,TheStateUniversityofNewJersey,apositionheassumedonSeptember1,2012.From2004to2012,Dr.BarchiservedaspresidentofThomasJeffersonUniversity,nationallyregardedasatopuniversitydedicatedtohealthscienceseducationandresearch.Previously,hewasprovostandchiefacademicofficeroftheUniversityofPennsylvania,wherehehadresponsibilityforPenn’s12schools,theiracademicprograms,athletics,students,andfaculty.

Dr.Barchibeganhisacademiccareerin1972onthePennfaculty.Hefoundedtheuniver-sity’sDepartmentofNeuroscience,waschairofPenn’sDepartmentofNeurology,andformorethanadecadewasdirectorofitsMahoneyInstituteofNeurologicalSciences.Ap-pointedprovostandchiefacademicofficerin1999,herecruitednewleadershipfornineofthetwelveschoolsatPennandestablishedanumberofuniversity-wideinterdisciplinaryeducationalandresearchinstitutes.

Dr.BarchiassumedthepresidencyofThomasJeffersonUniversityin2004.Underhisleadership,theuniversitygrewfromthreetosixschools,includingtheestablishmentoftheJeffersonSchoolofPharmacy.Duringhiseight-yearpresidency,enrollmentacrossJeffersonincreasedmorethan50%,fundraisingdoubledinspiteoftheeconomicdown-turn,and22newendowedprofessorshipsand50endowedscholarshipswereestab-

lished.Healsooversawthetransformationoftheinstitution’surbanenvironmentintoavibrantuniversitycampus.

Throughouthiscareer,Dr.Barchihasbeenactiveasaclinicalneurologistandasresearcherinthefieldsofneuroscienceandneurology.In1993,hewaselectedtotheInstituteofMedicineoftheNationalAcademyofSciencesforhisworkonthestruc-tureandfunctionofvoltage-gatedionchannels.HeisalsoamemberoftheAmericanSocietyforClinicalInvestigationandtheAssociationofAmericanPhysicians,andisaFellowoftheAmericanAssociationfortheAdvancementofScience.Barchire-ceivedhisB.S.andM.S.degreesfromGeorgetownUniversity,andPh.D.andM.D.degreesfromtheUniversityofPennsylvania.

ANewJerseynativewithastrongpassionforhisalmamater,TimPernettihascomefull-circleinbecomingoneofthena-tion’syoungestleadersincollegeathletics.Aformerstudent-athlete“OntheBanks”,PernettiwasnamedRutgers’sixthDirectorofInter-collegiateAthleticsonFebruary26,2009.Heoversees24men’sandwomen’sintercollegiateteamsinNewBrunswick,alargernumberthanfieldedatmostofthe

university’speerinstitutions.Pernettihasbeeninfluentialintheworldofcollegeathleticssincehereceivedabachelor’sdegreeinjournalismandmassmediafromRutgersin1993,andamas-ter’sdegreeincommunicationin1995.Pernetti’sinfluenceonRutgersAthleticshasbeenimmediate–fromthekeycoachinghiresofMikeRice(men’sbasketball),DanDonigan(men’ssoccer)andBrianBrecht(men’slacrosse)–tosecuringthefirsttwonamingrightspartnershipsinRutgersAthleticshistory.Underhisleadership,Rutgersinkeda10-yearnamingrightsdealwithHighPointSolutionstoacquirethenamingrightsforRutgersStadium,alongwitha10-yearcontractwithAudifortheAudiRutgersClubatHighPointSolutionsStadium.Bothdealshavenet-tedtheDepartmentofAthleticsnearlyonemilliondollarsinnewrevenuetotheannualbudget.TwootherkeyobjectivesonPernetti’swatchweretosecureanewfoodvendorforRutgersAthleticsandsecureanall-sportsshoeandappareldealforthedepartment.PernettiledthechargetobringSodexotoRutgersastheexclusiveconcessionaireandcatererfortheAthleticsDepartment.The10-yearagreementwillenhancethegamedayexperience,significantlyincreaserevenuestoAthletics,andfundfuturecapitalimprovementsatHighPointSolutionsStadiumandtheRAC.HefurtherdirectednegotiationswithNiketoexecutethefirst-everall-sportsshoeandappareldealforall24sportsatRutgers.Thefive-yearagreementworthap-proximately$5.2Minequipmentandapparelwillprovidestate-of-the-artapparelforallRutgersstudent-athletes.Duringhisintroductorypressconference,Pernettispokeabouthisvisiontobuildabroadbandnetworktodeliverhundredsofliveevents.ThatpromisehasblossomedintoRVision,poweredbyScarletKnights.com,asRVisionhasstreamedhundredsofliveeventsperyear,includingunprecedentedlivegamecoveragefor

A BrIEF hISTOrYRutgers,TheStateUniversityofNewJersey,isoneoftheleadinguniversitiesinthenation.Theuniversityiscomprisedof28degree-grantingdivisions;10undergraduatecolleges,10graduateschools,andeightschoolsofferingbothundergraduateandgraduatedegrees.SixarelocatedinCamden,eightinNewark,and13inNewBrunswickandoneinNewarkandNewBrunswick.

Rutgershasauniquehistoryasacolonialcollege,aland-grantinstitution,andastateuniversity.Char-teredin1766asQueen’sCollege,theeighthinstitutionofhigherlearningtobefoundedinthecolonies,theschoolopeneditsdoorsinNewBrunswickin1771withahandfuloffirst-yearstudents.Duringitsearlyyears,thecollegedevelopedasaclassicliberalartsinstitution.In1825,thenameofthecollegewaschangedtohonoraformertrusteeandRevolutionaryWarveteran,ColonelHenryRutgers.

RutgersCollegebecametheland-grantcollegeofNewJerseyin1864,resultingintheestablishmentoftheRutgersScientificSchool,featuringdepartmentsofagriculture,engineering,andchemistry.FurtherexpansioninthesciencescamewiththefoundingoftheNewJerseyAgriculturalExperimentStationin1880,theCollegeofEngineering(nowtheSchoolofEngineering)in1914,andtheCollegeofAgriculture(nowtheSchoolofEnvironmentalandBiologicalSciences)in1921.TheprecursorstoseveralotherRutgersdivisionswerealsoestablishedduringthisperiod:theCollegeofPharmacy(nowtheErnestMarioSchoolofPharmacy)in1892,theNewJerseyCollegeforWomen(nowDouglassResidentialCollege,partoftheSchoolofArtsandSciences)in1918,andtheSchoolofEducation(nowGraduateSchoolofEducation)in1924.

In1924,RutgersCollegeofficiallybecameRutgersUniversity;areflectionoftheinstitution’srapidlyexpandingnumberofschoolsandacademicpro-grams.Earlyinthecentury,RutgershadbegunofferingeducationalopportunitiestowomenwhentheNewJerseyCollegeforWomenwasfoundedin1918,andtoadultlearnerswhenUniversityCollege,aneveningdivision,wasestablishedin1934.AfterWorldWarII,enrollmentexplodedasRutgersadmittedallqualifiedcandidatesundertheGIBill.Rutgerswasbecominganinstitutionforallpeople,andin1945and1956,statelegislativeactsformallydesignatedRutgersasTheStateUniversityofNewJersey.Aflurryofexpansionensued.TheUniversityofNewark(nowRutgers–Newark)joinedRutgersin1946,followedbytheCollegeofSouthJersey(nowRut-gers–Camden)in1950.Anambitiousbuildingprogramaddedlibraries,classrooms,andstudenthousingacrossthethreeregionalcampuses.In1969,LivingstonCollegeopened,providingaco-educationalresidentialexperiencewithaspecialcommitmenttodiversity.GraduateeducationintheartsandsciencesgrewthroughtheestablishmentoftheGraduateSchool–NewBrunswick,theGraduateSchool–Newark,andtheGraduateSchool–Camden.Pro-fessionalschoolswereformedtoservestudentsinthefieldsofbusiness;communication,information,andlibrarystudies;criminaljustice;education;finearts;law;managementandlaborrelations;nursing;planningandpublicpolicy;psychology;publicaffairsandadministration;andsocialwork.Meanwhile,asindustryandgovernmentsoughtpartnersinsolvingproblemsandadvancingknowledge,theconceptoftheresearchuniversityemerged.

In1981,Rutgersadoptedablueprintforitstransformationintoamajorpublicresearchuniversity.Withincreasedsupportfromstate,federal,andcorporatepartners,Rutgers’strengthinresearchgrewdramatically.In1989,inrecognitionofitsenhancedstature,RutgerswasinvitedtojointheprestigiousAssociationofAmericanUniversities,anorganizationcomprisingthetop61researchuniversitiesinNorthAmerica.Today,professorsandstudentsworkinmorethan200specializedresearchcenters,unravelingmysteriesinmarinesciences,earlychildhoodeducation,neuroscience,advancedmaterials,climatechange,nutrition,homelandsecurity,transportation,stemcells,andmanyotherareasthatcanimprovelifebothinNewJerseyandaroundtheworld.

A2007majorreorganizationofundergraduateeducationinNewBrunswickreinvigoratedtheundergraduateexperienceforbothstudentsandfacultybycombiningthetraditionsandstrengthsoffourundergraduateliberalartscolleges—Douglass,Livingston,Rutgers,andUniversity—intoasingleSchoolofArtsandSciences.

With28schoolsandcolleges,Rutgersoffersmorethan100undergraduatemajorsandmorethan180graduateandprofessionaldegreeprograms.Theuniversitygraduatedmorethan13,000studentslastyear,andhasmorethan400,000livingalumniresidinginall50statesandonsixcontinents.Rutgersalsosponsorscommunityinitiativesinall21NewJerseycounties.Universitywide,newdegreeprograms,researchendeavors,andcommunityoutreachareindevelopmenttomeetthedemandsofthe21stcentury.
