MauraWaters-Ballardisinher18thseasonmentoringtheRutgersUniversitygolfprograms.Afterservingasheadcoachforboththemen’sandwomen’steams,shetransitionedtotheroleofDirectorofGolf/Women’sGolfCoachpriortothe2009-10academicyear.Inhernewcapacity,sheover-seestheoperationsandrecruitmentforbothteams,whileshiftinghercompetitionfocustothewomen’ssquad.
Waters-Ballardknowswhatittakestosuc-ceed“OntheBanks”asastudent-athlete.A1988graduateofRutgersCollegewithaBAinEconomics,shereliesontheexperienceshegainedasaletterwin-nerfortheScarletKnightsgolfteamfrom1984-1987.The2005BIGEASTMen’sGolfCoachoftheYearbringsnotonlyhercompetitiveexperiencetoherathletes,butalsogreatknowledgeofthegameofgolfaswellasfamiliaritywiththeUniversity.
Aformer“FuturesTour”player,Waters-Ballardhadquiteanextensivecompeti-tivegolfcareer.Shewasrunner-upinthe2009NewJerseyStateWomen’sAmateurChampionshiptoSherryHerman,whowonthe2009U.S.SeniorWomen’sChampionship.In2008,Waters-BallardwontheGardenStatePinehurstChampionshipwithpartnerAnnProbert.Shealsowonthe1992NewJerseyStateAmateurChampionship,the1991WMGABetterBallwithpartnerMaryEichhorn,andthe1988GardenStateStrokePlayChampionship.AsaScarletKnightgolfer,shewonthe1986YaleInvitational,andhadseveralothertop-threefinisheswhileearningMVPhonorsallfouryears.In1994,Bal-lardwasinductedintotheSomerville(NJ)HighSchoolAthleticHallofFameforheraccomplishmentsintennis,basketballandgolf.
“Wearestudentsfirst,”statesBallard.“Thatiswhywearehere,toearnadegree.Mygoalisformyathlete’sacademicsuccessandathleticprowesstogrowhandinhandduringtheircareersonthebanks.”
ItisevidentthatBallard’svisionfortheteamisworking.SincejoiningtheBIGEASTConferencein1997,herathleteshaveearnedBIGEASTAll-Academichonors87times.Themen’sgolfteamhaswon17tournaments,placedsecond12times,and12playershavewonindividualtitles.BrentPittman(ENG’05)earnedAllAmericanScholarhonorswhileleadinghisteamtothe2005NCAAEastRegional.InWatersBallard’s12yearsatthehelmofthewomen’sgolfteam,theyhavewonfivetournaments,placedsecond12times,andsixplayershavewonindividualtitles.
Inadditiontotheirsuccessintheclassroomandonthelinks,thewomen’sgolfteamhasearnedhonorsservicingthecommunityaswell.Theteamearnedthe“Athlete’sforLife”awardfromNewJerseyBloodServicesin2001,2003,2004and2005forhaving100percentteamparticipationintheirblooddrivesoncampus.
Duringthesummer,CoachBallarddirectstwo-week-longNikeJuniorGolfCamps.Thecampersarehousedintheair-cooled,three-bedroomsuitesontheBuschCampus,andpracticeandplayeachdayisheldattheRutgersUni-versityGolfcourse,alsoontheBuschCampus.
Ballard’spositiveattitudeandfocuseddemeanorhasresultedinherathlete’sreferringtoherasthe“eternaloptimist.”Whenaskedaboutthat,shere-sponds,“Theymaykidaroundaboutit,butItakeitasaveryhighcompliment.Iwanttobeacontinualsourceofinspirationformyteammembers.”
BallardresidesinFlemington,N.J.,withherhusband,Bob,a1981Rutgersgraduate.Theyspendmuchoftheirfreetimeplayinggolfattheirhomecourse,StantonRidgeGolfandCountryClub,whereBallardcarriesaonehandicapandisthewomen’sclubchampion.
Christopher MazzuchettiMen’s Golf Coach
ChristopherMazzuchettiisinhisfirstseasonasheadmen’sgolfcoach.APGAClass“A”memberwhohasspentthepasteightyearsasHeadGolfProfessionalatColonia(N.J.)CountryClub,MazzuchettiservesundertheleadershipofDirectorofGolfMauraWaters-Ballard.
“WearethrilledtowelcomeChristotheRutgersAthleticsfamily,”saidDirectorofAthleticsPernettionDecember17.“Hehasthecomprehensivebackgroundand
experienceingolftobeatremendousmentor,teacherandresourceforourstudent-athletes.”
“ChrisisanaccomplishedplayerandteacherinNewJersey,”addedWaters-Ballard.“Hisenthusiasmandhisextensiveknowledgeandexperiencewillbringourgolfteam’sperformancetothenextlevel.”
Mazzuchettiwasresponsibleforrecruitment,hiring,training,andsupervisionofallstaffincludingassistantandteachingprofessionals,outsideassistants,startersandrangersatColonia.Heoversawallgolfservicesandoperations,developedandoversawinstructionandgolferdevelopmentprogramsandspearheadedthecountryclub’sjuniorgolfprogram.PriortohistenureatCCC,MazzuchettiservedasassistantgolfprofessionalEssexFellsCountryClub(2000-02)andGlenRidgeCountryClub(1995-99).AnaccomplishedNJPGAcompetitor,MazzuchettihasearnednumeroustopfinishesonthecircuitandiscurrentlyrankedNo.11overall.In2009,hewastheNJPGACharityClassicchampion,wasrunner-upattheNJPGAMatchPlayChampionshipandplacedthirdattheNewJerseyStateOpen.Hehascom-petedintheMetropolitanOpenfourtimes.
ANewJerseynativeandNJPGABoardofDirectorsmember,MazzuchettiearnedabachelorofscienceincommercialrecreationfromMontclairStateUniversityin1998.HecompletedtheGolfProfessionalTrainingPrograminPortSt.Lucie,Fla.in2001.
Wally KimAssistant Coach
WallyKimhas18yearsofexperienceteach-inggolfatalllevels.APGAClassAMembersince1998,hehasbroughtanotherlevelofinstructiontothemembersoftheScarletKnightsmen’sandwomen’sgolfteams.
Workingwitheachstudent-athleteonaweeklybasis,Kimusescuttingedgetechnol-ogytoenhanceplayerperformance.Heutilizesbothvideoanalysisandstate-of-the-arttrainingaids.Histeachingfocusesonthecoreofthebodytomaketheswingmore
powerfulandfluid.

rUTGErS MEN’S GOLF hISTOrYTheRutgersmen’sgolfteamhascompetedintheprestigiousBIGEASTConferencesince1995.In2004,themen’steamwasvictori-ousinfourfalleventsandcompetedintheNCAAChampionshipsinthespringof2005,markingthefirsttimesince1984theScarletKnightsadvancedtotheNCAA’s.Followingthehistoric2004-05season,RutgersheadcoachMauraBallardwasnamedthe2005BIGEASTMen’sGolfCoachoftheYear.“Iamflatteredtohavereceivedthishonor,”saidWatersatthetime.“ThisisthemosttalentedteamI’vehadandithasbeenaveryexcitingyear.ThisgrouphasworkedextremelyhardandIamveryproudofthem.”TheRutgersmen’sgolfprogramhasproducedanumberoftopplayersinitslongandproudhistory.CurrentprofessionalswhostarredatRutgersincludeBillKing(SpringLakeGolfClub),FrankEsposito(BrooklakeCountryClub),MarkGiuliano(FairmountCountryClub),JimMrva(MonroeGolfClub,Rochester,NY),JohnFagan(RaritanValleyCountryClub),andJohnSchob(HuntingtonCrescentClub,Huntington,NY).Rutgershasalsoproduceditsshareoftopamateurplayers,includingBobMarzoli,the1971MGAchampion,two-timeAll-AmericanJamesGuerra,BarryWiseman,BruceYoung,RyanMacDonaldandBrentPittman,tonameafew.TwomenwhoplayedacentralroleintheevolutionandhistoryofRutgersGolfareformerlong-timeheadcoachFredGruningerandformerheadprofessionalArtDeBlasio.Gruninger,wholaterwentontoservealongtenureasRU’sathleticdirector,wasahighly-success-fulheadcoachatRutgers,leadingtheScarletKnightstoa109-30-2recordbetween1963and1972.ArtDeBlasio,theRutgersheadprofrom1966-2001,assistedwithboththemen’sandwomen’steamsduringhis35years“OntheBanks.”
rUTGErS UNIvErSITY GOLF COUrSETheRutgersUniversityGolfCoursewasfoundedin1961withtheconstructionofthepresentday18-holelayoutthatwasexpertlydesignedbyHalPurdy,anotedgolfarchitect.ThecoursewasofficiallyopenedMay29,1963.Today,thepar-71RutgersGolfCourse(par-72forwomen)canbestretchedto6,337yardsandfeaturesacourseratingof70.5andaslopeof130.Overthepastdecade,theRutgersGolfCoursehasundergoneextensiverenovationsandupdates,whichincludeamodernirrigationsystem,theadditionofseveralbunkersandtheplantingofmanytrees,includingahostofimpressiveever-greens.Oncearatherwide-opentract,today’sRutgersGolfCoursefeaturesahostoftree-linedholes,featuringundulatinggreensandwaterthatcomesintoplayonfiveholes.AroundofgolfattheRutgersGolfCourseoffersapanoramicviewofaplethoraofacademicbuild-ings,includingtheworldfamousWaksmanInstituteofMicrobiology,astatelystructurethatreststotheleftofthefirstfairway.EverygolferwhoenjoystheRutgersGolfCoursecanalsogazeatseveralathletic-relatedcomplexes.TotheleftofthefifthandsixthholeoffersaviewoftheIndoorBubble,inwhichtheRutgersfootballteamtrainsduringinclementweather.RisingmajesticallytotheleftofthesixthgreenisRutgersStadium,thehomeoftheScarletKnightfootballteam.TheRutgersGolfCoursefeaturesanewly-expandeddrivingrange,anda12,000squarefootshortgamepracticefacilityandputtinggreen.JillJerauld,aformerFuturesTourandEuropeanTourplayer,joinedtheRutgersUniversityGolfCourseastheCoursePro/ManagerinNovember2001.SheistheonlyfemaleProfessionalGolfAssociation(PGA)-certifiedheadprointhestateofNewJersey.For10yearspriortojoiningRutgersUniversityGolfCourse,shewastheheadproatBlueberryHillGolfCourseinRussell,PA.SinceJerauldtookovermanagementoftheRutgersUniversityGolfCourse,shehassuccess-fullyimplementedapace-of-playsystemthathasdecreasedthetimeofanaverageroundofgolfbyasmuchasonehour.DIDYOUKNOW?EveryholeattheRutgersGolfCourseisnamedforatreethatcanbefoundonthecourseandthatthepar-311thhole,namedSourGum,ishometotheoldestJapanesesourgumtreeinthestate.

A BRIEF HISTORYRutgers,TheStateUniversityofNewJersey,isoneoftheleadinguniversitiesinthenation.Theuniversityiscom-prisedof27degree-grantingdivisions;10undergraduatecolleges,11graduateschools,andsixschoolsofferingbothundergraduateandgraduatedegrees.FivearelocatedinCamden,eightinNewark,and13inNewBrunswickandoneinNewarkandNewBrunswick.
Rutgershasauniquehistoryasacolonialcollege,aland-grantinstitution,andastateuniversity.Charteredin1766asQueen’sCollege,theeighthinstitutionofhigherlearningtobefoundedinthecolonies,theschoolopeneditsdoorsinNewBrunswickin1771withahandfuloffirst-yearstudents.Duringitsearlyyears,thecollegedevelopedasaclassicliberalartsinstitution.In1825,thenameofthecollegewaschangedtohonoraformertrusteeandRevolutionaryWarveteran,ColonelHenryRutgers.
RutgersCollegebecametheland-grantcollegeofNewJerseyin1864,resultingintheestablishmentoftheRutgersScientificSchool,featuringdepartmentsofagriculture,engineering,andchemistry.FurtherexpansioninthesciencescamewiththefoundingoftheNewJerseyAgriculturalExperimentStationin1880,theCollegeofEn-gineering(nowtheSchoolofEngineering)in1914,andtheCollegeofAgriculture(nowtheSchoolofEnvironmentalandBiologicalSciences)in1921.TheprecursorstoseveralotherRutgersdivisionswerealsoestablishedduringthisperiod:theCollegeofPharmacy(nowtheErnestMarioSchoolofPharmacy)in1892,theNewJerseyCollegeforWomen(nowDouglassResidentialCollege,partoftheSchoolofArtsandSciences)in1918,andtheSchoolofEducation(nowGraduateSchoolofEducation)in1924.
In1924,RutgersCollegeofficiallybecameRutgersUniversity,areflectionoftheinstitution’srapidlyexpandingnumberofschoolsandacademicprograms.Earlyinthecentury,RutgershadbegunofferingeducationalopportunitiestowomenwhentheNewJerseyCollegeforWomenwasfoundedin1918,andtoadultlearnerswhenUniversityCollege,aneveningdivision,wasestablishedin1934.AfterWorldWarII,enrollmentexplodedasRutgersadmittedallqualifiedcandidatesundertheGIBill.Rutgerswasbecominganinstitutionforallpeople,andin1945and1956,statelegislativeactsformallydesignatedRutgersasTheStateUniversityofNewJersey.
Aflurryofexpansionensued.TheUniversityofNewark(nowRutgers–Newark)joinedRutgersin1946,followedbytheCollegeofSouthJersey(nowRutgers–Camden)in1950.Anambi-tiousbuildingprogramaddedlibraries,classrooms,andstudenthousingacrossthethreeregionalcampuses.In1969,LivingstonCollegeopened,providingacoeducationalresidentialexperiencewithaspecialcommitmenttodiversity.GraduateeducationintheartsandsciencesgrewthroughtheestablishmentoftheGraduateSchool–NewBrunswick,theGradu-ateSchool–Newark,andtheGraduateSchool–Camden.Professionalschoolswereformedtoservestudentsinthefieldsofbusiness;communication,information,andlibrarystudies;criminaljustice;education;finearts;law;managementandlaborrelations;nursing;planningandpublicpolicy;psychology;publicaffairsandadministration;andsocialwork.Meanwhile,asindustryandgovernmentsoughtpartnersinsolvingproblemsandadvancingknowledge,theconceptoftheresearchuniversityemerged.
In1981,Rutgersadoptedablueprintforitstransformationintoamajorpublicresearchuniversity.Withincreasedsupportfromstate,federal,andcorporatepartners,Rutgers’strengthinresearchgrewdramatically.In1989,inrecognitionofitsenhancedstature,RutgerswasinvitedtojointheprestigiousAssociationofAmericanUniversities,anorganizationcomprisingthetop63researchuniversitiesinNorthAmerica.Today,professorsandstudentsworkinmorethan230specializedresearchcenters,unravelingmysteriesinmarinesci-ences,earlychildhoodeducation,neuroscience,advancedmaterials,climatechange,nutrition,homelandsecurity,transportation,stemcells,andmanyotherareasthatcanimprovelifebothinNewJerseyandaroundtheworld.
A2007majorreorganizationofundergraduateeducationinNewBrunswickreinvigoratedtheundergraduateexperienceforbothstudentsandfacultybycombiningthetraditionsandstrengthsoffourundergraduateliberalartscolleges—Douglass,Livingston,Rutgers,andUniversity—intoasingleSchoolofArtsandSciences.
With27schoolsandcolleges,Rutgersoffersover100undergraduatemajorsandmorethan100graduateandprofessionaldegreeprograms.Theuniversitygraduatesmorethan10,000studentseachyear,andhasmorethan380,000livingalumniresidinginall50statesandonsixcontinents.Rutgersalsosponsorscommunityinitiativesinall21NewJerseycounties.Universitywide,newdegreeprograms,researchendeavors,andcommunityoutreachareindevelopmenttomeetthedemandsofthe21stcentury.
