2013-14 NAVY MEN’S golf

One of the most respected coaches in the sport today, eight-time Patriot League Coach of the Year Pat Owen is in his 24th season as the head coach of the Navy golf program.

In 2009, Owen was named the winner of the Labron Harris Sr. Award presented by E-Z-GO in cooperation

with The PGA of America and the Golf Coaches Association of America. The Harris Award is presented to the college or high school coach and PGA Professional whose support of the game through teaching, coaching and involvement in the community has helped ensure the continued growth of the game and who represents the finest qualities the game has to offer.

“Pat Owen is not only an outstanding PGA Professional, but also a truly great leader, mentor and role model to the Naval Academy’s Midshipmen ... golfer and non-golfer alike,” said Col. Dick Johns, USA (Ret.), Executive Director of the Middle Atlantic Section PGA. “Knowing that he is so deserving of this recognition, the entire Middle Atlantic PGA ‘family’ is extremely proud of Pat!”

Owen follows in the footsteps of past Labron Harris Award recipients Jay Hardwick (Virginia Tech), Devon Brouse (Purdue), the late Rod Myers (Duke), Herb Page (Kent State) and Jim Brown (Ohio State).

In February of 2010, Owen was invited to appear before the Maryland General Assembly where he was presented proclamations from Speaker of the House of Delegates Mike Busch along with Retired Marine Corps Colonel Senator John Astle, lauding him for his efforts in earning the national award and serving as both a teacher and role model to the thousands of Midshipmen who pass through the Academy.

During his tenure at the Academy, Owen has garnered Patriot League Coach-of-the-Year honors eight times (1993, ‘95, ‘97, ‘98, ‘04, ‘08, ‘09 and ‘12), including the spring of 2012 when he guided the Midshipmen to their sixth Patriot League Tournament title since 1998. Additionally, he earned NCAA District II Coach-of-the-Year recognition in 1996.

Owen has led the Midshipmen to six NCAA Regional appearances, including their 2012 NCAA Championship berth at the U-M Golf Course in Ann Arbor, Mich. In the spring of 1998, he guided the Mids to a fifth-place finish at the Eastern Championship and their first NCAA Regional appearance. Anchored by one of the most successful golfers in the program’s history in All-American Aaron Wright, Navy finished 19th at the East Regional held at Melrose Golf Course in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

Just three years after Wright’s graduation from the Academy, Owen landed a recruit

who would go on to be one of the top young amateur players in the country and lead the Mids to a pair of NCAA Regional appearances. Billy Hurley, a member of the 2005 Walker Cup team, came to the Academy during the 2000-01 academic year and quickly made a name for himself. But it wasn’t until the summer of 2003 that he gained national attention, where he battled to the No. 2 seed in the U.S. Amateur. A four-time All-Patriot League selection and the 2004 Patriot League MVP, Hurley became the first golfer to receive the Academy’s Thompson Trophy Cup, presented to that midshipman who has done the most during the year to promote athletics at the Naval Academy. The recipient of the 2004 Byron Nelson Award, he was one of the first two players to be named to the 2004 Palmer Cup and became the first player to represent a service academy in the annual Ryder Cup-style competition. In addition, he was voted to serve as captain by his peers. Hurley was named an Academic All-American, in addition to being named the Patriot League Male Scholar-Athlete of the year following his senior campaign. Hurley earned his tour card for the 2012 PGA Tour by finishing 25th on the 2011 Nationwide Tour money list.

Seven Navy players have won the Patriot League individual crown since 1997, including Chris House (‘13) who paced the field with his 3-over par, 219 at the Saucon Valley Golf Club in the Lehigh Valley last spring.

Additionally, Navy has had four players earn Patriot League Rookie of the Year acco-lades in the last eight years. Senior David Hall put together a near flawless performance at the 2011 championship which earned him a second-place finish and Patriot League Rookie of the Year recognition. Two years ago, August Jonas just missed claiming the title placing sixth overall at the conference tournament.

Prior to being named head coach at Navy in 1991, Owen served as an assistant coach for the Midshipmen for four years.

Outside of his golfing duties, Owen has served as a board member of the Annapolis Touchdown Club since 2004 and accepted the position of treasurer in 2008. The club promotes youth sports in the greater Annapolis area and helps to provide opportunities for young people to compete in athletics.

Owen is a 1981 graduate of Johns Hopkins, where he served as captain of the golf team his senior year. After turning pro, Owen earned national recognition with the high-est score on the PGA of America’s Business School exam. In addition to his coaching duties, Owen is the golf pro at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course. Owen and his wife, Karen, are the parents of a son, Patrick, and daughter, Noelle, and reside in Annapolis.

Entering his sixth season as a member of the Navy men’s golf coaching staff and his second as Associate Head Coach is Mike Burke. Burke was promoted prior to the beginning of the spring competition season in 2013. A native of Cape May Court House, N.J., Burke arrived in Annapolis in the spring of 2007 as a member

of the Academy’s Golf Professional Staff. A PGA Class “A” Professional since 2007, he joined the Mids’ coaching staff in the spring of 2008 where he has served as a volunteer assistant for Pat Owen. Since his arrival, Navy has twice won the Patriot League Championship (2008, ‘12) and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals, while the Mids have also placed second three times (2009, ‘11, ‘13) during that time frame. Eleven different Midshipmen have garnered All-Patriot League honors, including Erich Schoen who earned Patriot

League Player-of-the-Year accolades after taking the individual tournament crown in Burke’s first season and Chris House who took the title last spring and earned an auto-matic berth to play in the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional. Additionally, Navy has produced the league’s rookie of the year in three of the last six seasons (2008 Ben Hayes, 2009 Peter Reilly, 2011 David Hall). Prior to his arrival at the Academy, Burke served internships at the Brentwood (Calif.) Country Club, the Seaview Marriott (N.J.), the Air Force Academy (Colo.) and Bandon Dunes (Ore.). A proven master of the links, Burke passed the PGA Playing Ability Test on his first attempt. Burke is a 2006 graduate of Clemson University, earning his bachelors degree in Professional Golf Management.

2013-14 NAVY MEN’S golf

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. Boston University and Loyola University join the Patriot League beginning with the 2013-14 season. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country.

Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League also had 80 percent of its teams posting an APR score of 985 or higher in the most recent data, and 71 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top-10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.

The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society.

During the 2012-13 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following:

I The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in multi-year APR rating, and led all leagues in men’s basketball and baseball APR.

I 71 Patriot League teams, and 74 from full-member institutions, received NCAA Public Recognition Awards for finishing in the top-10 percent of their sport in APR data.

I Lehigh repeated as the top men’s program in the Presidents’ Cup standings, while Navy once again led the way on the women’s side.

I Bucknell’s Leonard Joseph and Navy’s Zack Duncavage each earned Second-Team All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

I Navy’s Annie-Norah Beveridge and American’s Mark Allen ran at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.

I Navy’s Jasmine DePompeo was up for the Tewaaraton award in women’s lacrosse, and became the first Patriot Leaguer since 1997 to be named an All-American by the IWLCA.

I Navy became the first Patriot League team to win an NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament game when it beat Monmouth in the first round on May 10.

I Six Patriot League student-athletes were awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships: Navy’s Chris Galvin (Track and Field), Laura Gorinski (Swimming and Diving), Brigid Byrne (Track and Field) and Jasmine DePompeo (Women’s Lacrosse); Fordham’s Patrick Murray (Football) and Bucknell’s Christian Treat (Swimming and Diving).

I Army’s Brendan Buckley and Navy’s Brigid Byrne were named the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year winners, respectively.

I 14 student-athletes from Patriot League sports earned Capital One Academic All-America recognition, including first-team selections for Navy’s Jasmine DePompeo (Women’s At-Large), Brigid Byrne (Women’s Track and Field/Cross Country) and Chris Galvin (Men’s Track and Field/Cross Country); Colgate’s Chris Looney (Football) and Army’s Brendan Buckley (Men’s At-Large).

I Navy’s Laura Gorinski (Women’s Swimming) and Army’s Ariana Mankus (Volleyball) were the Patriot League nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year award.

Navy women’s basketball won the 2013 Patriot League Tournament title, marking the third-consecutive postseason championship for the program.

Stephen Cooksey earned Patriot League Coach of the

Year honors following Navy’s title at the Men’s Indoor Track

& Field Championships.

Jasmine DePompeo was named the Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Year for third time and was the Tournament MVP for the second time.
