Main Street Grocery a fixture in town since 1950sFor anyone who grew

up in Richardsontownin the 1950’s and the1960’s, the Main StreetGrocery was a fixture.

First located on thenorth side of LongAvenue, the store wasjust a very small coun-try store in a very oldbuilding. It would befull of kids in the morn-ing before the schoolbus arrived and was aplace to spend a nickelor a dime on gum orcandy while waiting forthat yellow chariot.

The store later movedto the south side ofLong Avenue. It waslarger and brighter andwas the first big changein that neighborhood inmany, many years.

By 1989 that new store

was sold to CarolynDuckworth. Now, thestore is owned and oper-ated by the Duckworthfamily, Carl, Carolyn,Michelle and Rocky.

“We bought it fromTravis on June 15,1989,” said Duckworth.

The new store soongrew too small. Therejust wasn’t enoughroom to offer a varietyof anything, and someitems just couldn’t beaccommodated at all.

Then came the moveof October 2007. Withno space available toadd on to the store onMain Street, a decisionhad to be made: Wheredo we move that willbest suit our cus-tomers?

The answer, it turned

out, was 1205 S. Colum-bia St., just about fourblocks from the oldlocation. Open sevendays a week from 7 a.m.to 10 p.m., the new storeoffers a full line of gro-ceries, plus a bakeryand a deli. The produceis always fresh, and theprices competitive.

If you need help find-ing anything, thefriendly and courteousstaff is always ready topoint you in the rightdirection.

Give Carolyn Duck-worth a call at 732-4625or just stop by. Sheloves to take care of hercustomers.

“They’re the only rea-son we’re here. My cus-tomers are the best cus-tomers.”

The facility’s new chapel.

Residents can relax in this peaceful environment.

Since the opening ofRawls Pharmacy, Mt.Hermon residents havea drug store right intheir neighborhood. The “mom and poppharmacy” is owned byJeremy Rawls and hiswife, Samantha.

For eight years aftergraduating from phar-macy school, Rawlsworked at a Wal-Martpharmacy, but he beganto think that big retailwas not the place forhim any longer.

“You didn’t have timeto talk to customers likeyou need to and counselthem properly,” he said.

Rawls, who grew upin Pine, now resides inTylertown, Miss. In dec-iding to open his owndrug store, he said he“wanted to get into theindependent scene” andmove closer to home. Heand his wife chose toopen a pharmacy in Mt.Hermon since therewas not one already, and they felt the storecould be a help to thecitizens there.

“We didn’t want tojust build right undersome other people andtry to compete with

them or anything,” hesaid. “We wanted toactually be of service tothe community.”

“(There’s) nothinglike really owning yourown (business) andbeing the one responsi-ble for the communityand everything. I justlove it.”

“Here, I’ve been ableto actually help people,”he said. “Like, they’llshow me what they’regoing to sign up for andI’ve been able to say,‘OK, this is what that’sgoing to mean. Here’sthe cost of all your med-icines, and this is whatyou’re deductible isgoing to be.’”

In addition to medica-tion, the merchandiseat Rawls Pharmacy

includes snacks and giftitems like jewelry, can-dles and handbags.

“As far as the selec-tion of stuff that wehave, we tried to get arepresentative sampleof what you would findin a small drug store, and we’re planning toexpand in the gift area,”Rawls said.

The pharmacy’shours of operation are 8a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondaythrough Friday, and 9a.m. to noon onSaturday, Rawls said.

The response from thecommunity, Rawls said, has been very positive.

“We’ve had tremen-dous support from thecommunity so far, and Ireally thank them forthat,” he said.
