HOBY President

and Chief Executive

Officer

Since 2007, as President of HOBY, I have been privileged to witness amazing growth and transformation, in both the organization and tens of thousands of youth leaders. HOBY continues to evolve, creating quality youth programs that inspire our Ambassadors to make a difference in the lives of others. HOBY has impacted generations of youth over the last 55 years, and with your help, will continue to do so for generations to come.

Around the world, over 10,000 high school sophomores

participate in HOBY providing them the motivation, inspiration and training to become effective leaders in their communities and beyond. Our Leadership for Service program teaches students the benefits of community service. This year, we reached

an all-time high, with more than 2,800,000 hours of service contributed by HOBY alumni. That’s an over $61,000,000 economic impact for our schools, neighborhoods and communities generated by HOBY. An Outstanding return on the HOBY investment!

With over 4,000 volunteers participating annually, HOBY inspires far more people than our Ambassadors. And there is always room for more. You too can volunteer, by becoming a HOBY board member, speaker, organizer for a local seminar or for our exciting World Leadership Congress this July in Chicago. The personal reward is without measure and will enrich your life for years to come.

Supporting HOBY provides life-changing experiences for youth and allows us to serve even more young people. The generosity of our foundations, individual, private and corporate partners make it possible for HOBY to flourish, and for us to meet the ever increasing demand for this incomparable experience and leadership training.

We hope you will share our vision and help us develop young leaders who will go out and change our world. Thank you for your support and consideration.

Javier La FianzaHOBY President and Chief Executive Officer

“ The continued vitality of American business, our communities and our nation is highly dependent upon the knowledge and capabilities of our young people. Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) nurtures today’s young people

To motivate and empower individuals to make a positive difference within our global society, through understanding and action, based on effective and compassionate leadership.

Volunteerism – Volunteerism is the heart and soul of our organization. We appreciate the myriad contributions of our volunteers, and recognize the power of thank you and of giving back. We seek to promote and encourage service among our stakeholders. We recognize and value the positive accomplishments that volunteers can achieve by working together. We believe that volunteers are positively impacted by our programs as much as the youth and communities we serve.

Integrity – Integrity forms the foundation of our organization. We demand the highest level of ethics. We grow our organization based on interactions that promote mutual trust and respect with our stakeholders and partners. We strive to ensure the highest level of organizational effectiveness by continually reviewing our programs and processes to improve quality and efficiency.

Excellence – We strive to continually raise our programs and business to new levels of excellence. We encourage entrepreneurship and innovation in business, education, and social responsibility. We develop creative solutions to address challenges and to utilize opportunities. We believe that leadership skills can and should be continually improved and refined.

Diversity – We value and embrace diversity. We seek out views that reflect all walks of life, and reflect those views in our programs. We are sensitive to the special needs and diverse backgrounds of individuals. We give all individuals an equal opportunity to be heard and to benefit from our programs.

Community Partnership – We value community partnerships. We recognize the importance of working with community organizations to strengthen our supportive network. We value the input we receive from our community partners, and strive to work together cooperatively and constructively for the betterment of all.

HOBY teaches students not what to think, but how to think—creatively, critically, and compassionately. Each year, more than 10,000 high school sophomores attend HOBY leadership programs both across the country and abroad. Almost 100% of these programs are volunteer driven, and 65% of volunteers are HOBY alumni. Over 425,000 young people have participated in HOBY programs, and they are making a difference in helping to solve such key issues as poverty, hunger, homelessness, bullying, and disease.

Dr. Albert Schweitzer

As Hugh O'Brian departed from an unforgettable 9 days with Dr. Albert Schweitzer at a clinic in Africa in 1958, Schweitzer took his hand and asked “What are going to do with this?” Just 2 weeks later HOBY was born.

9

HOBY provides youth, with unique leadership training, service-learning skills, and motivation-building experiences. Each program strives to follow the HOBY motto of teaching young leaders “how to think, not what to think,” thus ensuring that Dr. Schweitzer’s and Hugh's hope for youth lives on.

AlumniToday, more than 425,000 proud alumni make HOBY stronger than ever. HOBY alumni are leaders in their schools and communities, throughout the United States and the world, making a difference for others through service.

WLC (WORLD LEADERSHIP CONGRESS)

The Advanced Leadership Academy (ALA) is a five-day practical and engaging, university-style program using the college text, Leadership for

a Better World, designed for high school juniors and seniors who want to activate change in their community. Participants create an action plan to implement a service project or social enterprise within one year following their ALA experience. Participants meet other successful youth who have led service projects and started nonprofits and businesses. Support is provided to students after the program to coach them through their project implementation and success.

The International Tours Program takes high school and college students from across the country on an eight or nine day tour to some of the world’s most exciting and historic destinations. This program includes guided tours by professional tour directors, practical travel lessons, international service experience, and foreign language introduction, and is operated by HOBY staff and HOBY trained chaperones. HOBY Alumni, siblings, and friends are invited to participate in this program.

Volunteers are the backbone of HOBY. HOBY Volunteers give countless hours of work, ingenuity and passion to promote HOBY programs, recruit young leaders and raise the funds necessary. They are keynote speakers and guest panelists at HOBY events. Their companies or organizations, provide gift-in-kind support and fund student scholarships and program costs for thousands of participating students. HOBY volunteers serve on the boards of HOBY affiliate corporations—providing guidance on planning, marketing, finances, and governance.

Training Institute (TI) The Training Institute is HOBY’s annual volunteer training conference and gathers together 150 key volunteers from all 50 states and international locations to conduct and participate in training, and discuss and exchange ideas on the best practices in leadership training, fundraising and marketing for HOBY’s programs. TI insures that HOBY volunteers are prepared to succeed and help our ambassadors succeed, as well.

Big steps can be scary but year after year, HOBY proves that taking a brave step in the journey of life is worthwhile.”

Recipient of the Outstanding Young Alumni Award 2013

Beth Awalt was inspired by HOBY to become even more involved by serving in key leadership roles. She has mentored incarcerated juveniles through Hand in Hand Baltimore and was co-President of STAND (Students Taking Action Now: Darfur ) where she organized a Genocide Awareness Week.

After graduating from Villanova University, she co-founded a non-profit organization, The Starfish Foundation, an organization that provides scholarships to students in Guayaquil, Ecuador to finish their high school education. Beth does not believe in, as she calls, the “band-aid fix” of charity; instead, Beth prioritizes ‘teaching the man to fish’ to create a more sustainable world. Beth continues to run this organization while working full time at the Esperanza Center. She continues to be a long-time, dedicated volunteer for HOBY.

Recipient of the Outstanding Young Alumni Award 2013

Kevin Chaves founded Have a Heart, Help Stop Hunger. His work helped rebuild a food pantry destroyed by fire, and raises money and food donations through fundraising events, collecting over 10,000 items to date. Inspired by HOBY, he started a second project, “Let’s Move Healthy and Fit,” for the Gerald J. Ryan Summer

Camp, which helped collect and raise money for sports equipment, books and snacks for underprivileged kids. He also organized a “Day of Fitness” to give the kids an opportunity to learn about sports and play. Because of his work, 148 children received the Presidential Physical Fitness Award. He has completed over 1,000 hours of service in the past two years.

“My goal has been to be a leader of higher expectations and to provide the needed support to help others find the talents in themselves, encouraging them to do their very best and seize every opportunity.”

It is only through the generosity of corporations, philanthropists and individuals like yourself that we are able to achieve our mission; to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. If HOBY has inspired you through our actions, success, or Ambassadors, we invite you to get involved either through volunteering, making a financial contribution, or connecting HOBY to your personal and professional network. Working together, we will continue to change the world, one HOBY Ambassador at a time.
