PASTEL P AINTS

FROM WIKIPEDIA, THE FREE ENCYCLOPEDIA

Pastel is an art medium in the form of a stick, consisting of pure powdered pigment and a binder. The pigments used in pastels are the same as those used to produce all colored art media, including oil paints; the binder is of a neutral hue and low saturation.

The color effect of pastels is closer to the natural dry pigments than that of any other process.

PASTEL ART IN ART HISTORY

The pastel medium was first mentioned by Leonardo da Vinci in 1495. Artists such as Maurice Quentin de La Tour and Rosalba Carriera have been using pastels to create masterpieces as far back as 1703. During the 18th century the medium became fashionable for portrait painting, some-times in a mixed technique with gouache. In the United States, initially pastels only had occasional use in portraiture. However in the late nineteenth century, pastel (like watercolor) became more pop-ular.

[6] The Society of Painters in Pastel was founded in 1885. The Pastellists, led by Leon Dabo, or-

ganized in New York in 1910. Pastels have become popular in modern art because of the medium's broad range of bright colors.

PASTEL MEDIA

Pastel sticks or crayons consist of pure powdered pigment combined with a binder. The exact com-

Page 6: 2013 8 art tique local art event newsletter

AR T -T IQUE ’S LOCAL ART E VENT NEWSLETTER 6

position and characteristics of an individual pastel stick depends on the type of pastel and the type and amount of binder used. It also varies by individual manufacturer.

Dry pastels have historically used binders such as Gum Arabic and Gum Tragacanth. Methyl cellulose was introduced as a binder in the twentieth century. Often a chalk or gypsum com-ponent is present. They are available in varying degrees of hardness, the softer varieties being wrapped in paper. Some pastel brands use pumice in the binder to abrade the paper and create more tooth.

DRY PASTEL MEDIA CAN BE SUBDIVIDED AS FOLLOWS

Soft Pastels: This is the most widely used form of pastel. The sticks have a higher portion of pigment and less binder, result-ing in brighter colors. The drawing can be readily smudged and blended, but it results in a higher proportion of dust. Finished drawings made with soft pastels require protecting, either fram-ing under glass or spraying with a fixative to prevent smudging; Hairspray also works. White chalk may be used as a filler in producing pale and bright hues with greater luminosity.

[2]

Pan Pastels invented in the past few years are formulated with a minimum of binder in flat com-pacts like women's makeup and applied with special Sofft micropore sponge tools. No liquid is in-volved. Pan Pastels can be used for the entire painting or in combination with soft and hard sticks.

Hard Pastels: These have a higher portion of binder and less pigment, producing a sharp drawing material that is useful for fine details. These can be used with other pastels for drawing outlines and adding accents. Hard pastels are traditionally used to create the preliminary sketching out of a com-position.

[3] However, the colors are less brilliant and are available in a restricted range in contrast to

soft pastels.

Pastel Pencils: These are pencils with a pastel lead. They are useful for adding fine details.

In addition, pastels using a different approach to manufacture have been developed:

Oil Pastels: These have a soft, buttery consistency and intense colors. They are dense and fill the grain of paper and are slightly more difficult to blend than soft pastels, but do not require a fixative. They may be spread across the work surface by thinning with turpentine.

[4]

Water-soluble Pastels: These are similar to soft pastels, but contain a water-soluble component, such as glycol. This allows the colors to be thinned out to an even, semi-transparent consistency using a water wash. Water-soluble pastels are made in a restricted range of hues in strong colors. They have the advantages of enabling easy blending and mixing of the hues, given their fluidity, as well as allowing a range of color tint effects depending upon the amount of water applied with a brush to the working surface.

There has been some debate within art societies as to what exactly counts as a pastel. The Pastel Society within the UK (the oldest pastel society) states the following are acceptable media for its ex-hibitions: "Pastels, including Oil pastel, Charcoal, Pencil, Conté, Sanguine, or any dry media". The emphasis appears to be on "dry media" but the debate continues.

DENISE MCG ILL ARTIST—ILLUSTRATOR

As a high school student, Denise fell in love with the idea of illustrating children’s books after reading Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. However she got mar-ried, as many girls do, and started a family so finishing school was put off. After a very messy divorce and years raising her two girls, she remarried.

She hadn’t spent the years idle. She began illustrating for children’s magazines and writing several books (mostly craft books). These have been self-published on a limited basis. After the children all left home with careers and families of their own, she finished her Bachelors of Fine Arts degree and is now pursuing a Masters in Illustration. She has also done some work for a small publishing company, Aero Publishing, illus-trating Bible stories for children.

Denise also has been teaching art for many years. She worked for the City of Fresno for 14 years teaching watercolor painting to senior citizens, until the budget cuts elimi-nated the program. She taught with Fresno Adult Community Education for 10 years and has taught many children’s classes both through Community Education and home-school venues.

She lives in Fresno, California with her husband, who is also creative in video and theatrical productions. She is a signa-ture member of the Society of Western Artists, San Joaquin Valley Chapter, and has served as the treasurer for 7 years. She enters art shows every year and has received many rib-bons and awards for her work. She loves to read mostly children’s books (of course), to see what is being written, what is hot, and what is not. She also teaches knitting and crochet… many classes meeting at a local Starbucks.

S ANTA CRUZ ART LEAGUE

The mission of the Art League is to function as an agent for the artistic experience. The Santa Cruz Art League encourages visual and performing arts in an environment that is supportive to the artist, to students, and to the community. Approximately twelve art shows are held each year, some for members, some juried, and some invitational. We hold three-hour, five- to six-week long classes and monthly weekend workshops throughout the year, as well as children's theater classes, theater productions, and monthly book readings and signings by local authors.

The Santa Cruz Art League was founded in 1919 by eleven landscape artists yearning for a place to meet in order to share their art, to teach, and to motivate one another. In 1885, many of these same people had started the first local art gallery and classes. Beginning in 1923, the second president lived in the basement of the local library and managed the

property in exchange for exhibition space for the Art League on the walls of the city-owned building. The Art League was evicted in 1947 and the members recognized the need for artists to have a gallery owned by themselves. SCAL incorporated as a nonprofit in 1949 and bought a piece of property over a sinkhole resulting from the 1906 San Fran-cisco earthquake. The dedicated members raised money for a building by having clothesline art sales, benefit teas, card parties, and by selling the individual bricks of the building. The current building was opened to the public in 1951. Until then, the Art League had exhibitions at other venues, always staying in front of tourists' eyes.

The annual Statewide Exhibition, which recently completed its 75th annual show at the SCAL gallery, used to be held in conjunction with the Miss California pageant at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and later at Treasure Island in San Francisco. During the depression of the 1930's, SCAL was one of the few galleries continuing to offer cash prizes. In the years 1951-1983, the Art League housed a well-known tourist destination, The Last Supper, a life-sized sculpture produced by a celebrated ceramist and a local wax sculptor.

Membership in SCAL has fluctuated throughout its recent history, from a low of 200 in the 1970's because of re-strictions against "modernists" to a high of 800 during the "dot com" years of the late 1990's. For almost 100 years, the Santa Cruz Art League has bent and swayed and adapted to the times. It is a membership organization open to any-one.

The Santa Cruz Art League membership includes:

Quarterly newsletter and monthly calendar with announcements of exhibitions, receptions, classes, performances, and other events of interest., Participation in annual membership exhibit and weekend art fairs. Computerized images of your work displayed on the web and in our lobby for view by visitors and collectors as well as potential exhibition chair people., Ample opportunities to network with other artists, discover other exhibition venues and market places, and share techniques and supply sources., Discounts on art classes, advertising in the SCAL Newsletter, and 10% dis-count on purchases in the gallery or gift shop., Juried placements of jewelry, ceramics, textiles, or other craftwork in the gift shop. $75/year single membership

There are also many opportunities to help the Santa Cruz Art League. For instance, we rely on volunteer docents to greet and guide the public. Volunteers have fun helping with exhibits, receptions, and special events such as The Luck of The Draw, our annual fund-raising art auction with a twist. The Santa Cruz Art League is the place to meet people of all ages and backgrounds, immerse in the arts, and serve the community

How Do Copyright Laws Affect You As A Visual Artist?

The visual arts category on the U.S. Government website, involves pictorial,

graphic, or sculptural works, including two- and three-dimensional works of fi-

ne, graphic, and applied art. Examples include paintings, photographs; original

prints; art reproductions; cartographic works (maps, globes, and relief models);

technical and mechanical drawings; and architectural drawings, plans, blue-

prints, or diagrams. Copyright protects an author’s specific expression in liter-

ary, artistic, or musical form. Copyright protection does not extend to any idea,

system, method, device, name, or title.

The United States Copyright Office was created to serve the copyright com-

munity of creators and users, as well as the general public. Here you will find

all key publications, informational circulars; application forms for copyright registration; links to the copyright

law and to the homepages of other copyright related organizations; news of what the Copyright Office is

doing, Congressional testimony and press releases; the latest regulations.

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998

Due to fast-breaking developments in the electronic storage and transmission of images, an artist is ex-

pected to have a good understanding of copyright law and how it is interpreted in our rapidly changing so-

cial and high-tech landscape. "The complex and challenging issues of copyright are now part of the daily

reality of all artists who work with images".

Two basic aspects of copyright as it applies to visual artists are: what rights the artist or designer has to

their own work, and what accountabilities they have when using the creative work of others. Unlike pre-

internet days, images are now being broadcast all over the world and it is difficult to hide copyright infringe-

ment. Using copyright protected images to create art cheapens your portfolio; it isn’t good for your artistic

integrity and you can be sued. Digital cameras now cost so little that everyone can take their own reference

photos. Artists can also search the internet for photos that allow re-use (just check the “owner allows re-

use” in your search filter).

With the creation of Flicker and Facebook among other photo sites, Visual artists can’t help living in an envi-

ronment saturated with images. As Artists we are influenced, whether consciously or unconsciously, by eve-

rything we see around us in books, magazines, TV, the internet, and in advertising. If you use photos as

reference images, you should use your own photos or public domain images. Look at the photo for inspira-

tion but add your own creativity and "artistic license" to make the final image your own. Make sure that your

image is not an exact copy of the photo. A word of warning: the “10%” use doctrine touted by many as a de-

fense can be very subjective in a court of law and I wouldn’t want to depend on it in front of a judge. For

more information on this subject, I recommend:

Not+All+Is+Fair+Use+in+Trademarks+and+Copyrights

To Review

· These days, almost all things are copyrighted the moment they are written, and no copyright notice is

required.

· Whether or not you charged money doesn’t make any difference to Copyright violations; only the dam-

ages you might have to pay out will be affected by how much money you made on your sale.

Postings to the internet are not automatically in the public domain, and the fact you found it there

doesn’t grant you any permission to do further copying except maybe the sort of copying that might

have been expected in the ordinary flow of the net and only a judge can make that decision.

· Fair use is a complex doctrine meant to allow certain valuable social purposes. For more Information

on Fair Use, go to http://www.copyright.gov. Ask yourself why you are re-doing what you are working on

and why you couldn't have just used the subject in your own style.

· Copyright is not lost because you don't defend it; that's a concept from trademark law. The ownership

of names is also from trademark law, so a name can’t be copyrighted although it may still be protected

under Trademark laws. If you want more information on Trademarks vs. Copyrights go to:

www.uspto.gov/trademarks/law/tmlaw.pdf.

· For those writers among you Fan fiction/slash and other work derived from copyrighted works is a cop-

yright violation; while the owner may ignore a few fun stories presented on their characters or story

lines, if you try and sell it the owner will have to take notice in order to protect their

copyright.

· Copyright law is mostly civil law where the special rights of criminal defendants

you hear so much about on TV don't apply. Watch out, however, as new laws

are moving copyright violation into the criminal realm and who knows what

the future may bring. Remember all those people who went to jail or got fined

millions of dollars from downloading music?

· Don't rationalize that you are helping the copyright holder by using his or her

stuff; often it's not that hard to ask permission.

· While posting E-mail is technically a violation, revealing facts from E-mail you got isn't, and for almost

all typical E-mail, nobody could wring any damages from you for posting it. The law doesn't do much to

protect works with no commercial value.

Good Luck

Gail
