“We chose clothing that is business casual and stylish,” says owner Gabrielle Spangler. “Man Code takes pride in how we choose our products and how they get to the customer.”

Spangler says she has enjoyed the opportunity to hand pick products from New York, Chicago and Dallas and bring new styles back home to Sioux Falls.

“I just wanted to find classic pieces that weren’t available anywhere else in town.”

One of her favorite brands discovered during trips to market was Ted Baker. Among the pieces in this clothing line are button down shirts made from soft-to-the-touch fabric with great detailing like the different designs that peek out from inside the cuffs.

“This brand carries everything from jeans and shirts to bags and socks, not to mention amazing footwear,” says Spangler. “Everyone is busy these days, including men. So, when they come to Man Code, we’ll help them find pieces they can wear every day…pieces that can be worn dressy or casual, and any man can pull it off.”

The store’s comfortable-yet-hip atmosphere provides a fun, no-pressure shopping experience.

Rather than going with standard clothing racks, Spangler enlisted the help of her fiancé in creating racks from old pipes. They had fun with decoupage, covering one full-length mirror with “manly” images from old magazine pages and another mirror with pieces of maps. On the wall behind the counter hangs the horned head of a steer, decoupaged with print paper,

wearing a necktie and mounted on red and black fabric.Old wood spools serve as tables, wood pallets are the base

for the full-length mirror or a place from which to hang belts. Sitting on the shelves are stacks of old books, glass jars filled with golf balls or matchbox cars and large metal letters “M” and “C”- obviously, for Man Code.

“Those came from an old YMCA sign,” says Gabrielle. “Now I just have to figure out what to do with the ‘Y’ and ‘A’ I have at home.”

But, along with the playful, Spangler also included something practical in the store’s design – two leather chairs facing the wall-mounted flat screen TV.

Some may be surprised that the owner of Man Code is a woman. Many more would be surprised to learn that Spangler is only 22 years old.

“Running my own business has always been a dream of mine,” she says. “My parents have always been self-employed, so I guess I’ve always been business-minded.”

Spangler is enjoying her dream of business ownership and spending her days at the store, often kept company by her big, black labradoodle, Macy.

When asked about the inspiration for her store’s name, Spangler says she is “still kind of coming up with what the ‘man code’ is,” but, she adds, “Someday I want to put all of the man code ‘rules’ into a book.”

The keinroth family bought their home along the southern edge of Sioux Falls five years ago, after it had been featured

on a Parade of Homes by the Bok-Nel company.Throughout the house are features that are part of Bok-Nel’s

design signature, such as tray ceilings, reverse tray ceilings, cut-outs and detailed framework around windows and doors.

“Every room has some unique feature like that,” says Piper

keinroth. “It’s that design and quality work that really drew us to this house.”

Sharing the five bedroom, three bath space are Piper, husband Dave, their son Hutton, two dogs, a rabbit, a guinea pig and a lizard.

how. But, I just started getting all of these roosters.”Piper credits her mom, Sandy Farner, with much of the

decorating inspiration throughout the home, along with interior designer Christen Cunningham.

Just off the kitchen and dining area, through a set of sliding doors, is an all-season porch. Well, mostly all-season.

Piper says that at first it was a patio area, but they didn’t want to always worry about storing the wicker furniture in the winter or having to bring in the plump red cushions every time it looked like rain. So, they enclosed the space but inserted windows on all sides to let in the natural light.

The spacious living room, decorated in a mix of leather, fabric and wicker furniture, has architectural built-in arches, columns and a tiered ceiling with crown molding.

Although the round columns extending from the partial wall

dividing the kitchen and living room were originally white, the keinroths decided to have decorative wood boxes made to cover the original columns.

“Everything else in the room has warmer colors,” says Piper, “so we thought having the wood columns fit with the look of the room.”

Moving from the living room down the hallway, you notice the cut out space over the entryway closet and the arched window over the front door, which Piper says is especially nice during the winter to let in a little extra natural light.

long to realize that he is a fan of airplanes. Right inside the door is a piece of his kindergarten artwork – a big, friendly puppy – with an airplane up in the corner.

assignment, has had an airplane in it,” says Piper.An open cut out space above the closet was a perfect place to

hang vintage airplanes from ceiling hooks.Hanging on one wall is a framed poster with the boy’s smiling

face proclaiming “Hutton for Sheriff.”Piper says there is a story behind that print. When they were

living in Minnesota, there was an individual with the last name of Hutton who was running for local sheriff. Piper took one of the red, white and blue signs, cut out a spot for their son’s picture and then inserted the sign into a bright red frame.

Below that print sits a family of tigers, in honor of the Harrisburg school system mascot.

Across the hall, the master suite provides a nice getaway space for Dave and Piper, with its large walk-in closet and a tray ceiling with rounded edges with recessed lights. Bok-Nel used a variety of texturing techniques on the ceiling which add visual interest. The master bath features a granite-topped double vanity, large walk-in shower and additional storage.

The lower level is ready for family – or neighborhood – fun with a walk up wet bar and bistro table and chairs. It’s ready for all ages, though, with stacked glass candy jars and a vase filled with Tootsie Pops.

variety of plaids and gingham checks in black and white, along with a white wood wardrobe, provide a cozy, farmhouse feel to

Hutton to hang out with friends. With his love of airplanes, the room has actually been dubbed “Hutton’s Hangar” and features a black shelving unit with boxes deep enough to hold his model airplanes. Military-style lettering covers the fabric of the large ottoman, propeller blades hang on the wall, and the black valance on the window is complete with metal studs.

While the lower level is great for fun times when it is cold outside, the other seasons find the family and their friends out in the garage.

“It’s my husband’s Taj Mahal,” says Piper.The room is dual-purpose, with a storage area created using

the closet doors the keinroths took out of the upstairs office. All

of the tools and gadgets are tucked away neatly, leaving more room for the big refrigerator, small counter and sink, bistro table and chairs – and a television, of course.

One wall of the garage is covered with framed, poster-sized collages of family photos. Creating a new one each year is one of Piper’s projects. Other signs and banners proclaim the space as a Man Cave and as a place where Iowa Hawkeye fans are welcome.

It’s also home to their lizard, who lives near the vintage Ms. Pac-Man machine.

While there are separate areas for the Man Cave and a kid Cave, it’s obvious that the keinroths have created a home that is the perfect Family Cave.

Chocolate Pumpkin Bread

3 1/2 cups sugar1 1/4 cups cooking oil3 eggs1 29 ounce can solid pack pumpkin3 squares unsweetened chocolate, melted and

cooled2 teaspoons vanilla3 3/4 cups flour1 tsp salt1 1/2 tsp baking powder1 1/4 tsp baking soda1 tsp cinnamon1 tsp cloves1/2 tsp nutmeg2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Combine the sugar and oil in a large bowl. Add the eggs and mix well. Stir in the pumpkin, melted chocolate and vanilla and mix well again. Combine all dry ingredients and stir into the pumpkin mixture until just blended. Stir in the chocolate chips. Pour into three greased 9x5 inch loaf pans. Bake at 350˚ for 55-65 minutes or until the bread passes the toothpick test. Cool for 10-15 and remove from pans to a cooling rack.

Apple Nut Bread

1/2 cup butter, softened1 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar, divided2 eggs1/2 teaspoon vanilla2 cups flour1 teaspoon baking soda1/2 teaspoon salt2 tablespoons buttermilk1 cup grated peeled apple1 cup chopped nuts3/4 teaspoon cinnamon

In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla and mix well. Combine flour, baking soda and salt and add to the creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk, mixing well after each addition. Fold in apples and nuts. Pour into a 9x5 grease loaf pan. Combine the remaining sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over the batter. Bake at 350˚ for 60-65 or until the bread passes the toothpick test. Cool for 10-15 minutes and then remove from pan and place on cooling rack.

An old friend called me the other day and we started reminiscing about some of the old bars and restaurants

we used to frequent. Places like Opie’s and After Five, the

Northlander and First Edition. All of those old places have faded into memory, but in their place many new (and dare I say better) choices have come along. That got me thinking about how the

Sioux Falls food scene has changed and grown over the last 25 years. Most of the time that growth and change has been good, although there have certainly been some dark moments too. So what are the best things I’ve seen happen to food in Sioux Falls? I’m glad you asked. Here are my Top 5:

5: More Ethnic FoodWhen I’m talking about ethnic, I don’t mean Taco John’s (even

though they are a local favorite). Now, when I want great Mexican, I can choose any one of a dozen or so places. Most are run by families using recipes passed down for generations. I’m partial to Jackie’s, but you can’t go wrong with Nikki’s, Puerto Vallarta, on an old standby like Incas. And it seems like new shops open all the time.

It’s not just Mexican; do you want Vietnamese, Ethiopian, Mediterranean or Afghani? A few years ago you might have been out of luck, but today we’ve got great options right here on the prairie. We could use a good dim sum place, and I miss the pierogi from the old Polish Plate, but I’m not complaining; the new choices are outstanding.

If there is down side, the proliferation of Chinese buffets has gotten a little out of hand. It seems each iteration is larger than the last, and bigger does not mean better. A friend described the newest buffet as “a seemingly endless variety of despair.” I’ve decided not to see it for myself.

4: More Farmers MarketsThe Falls Park Farmers Market has been selling fresh produce

downtown for more than a hundred years, and the market at the Western Mall has been around for quite a while, but they are no longer alone. Now any Saturday morning in the summer, you can find two downtown, plus one at Borrowed Bucks and one way down south at Callaway’s. On Wednesdays, the market at Callaway’s opens up again, as well as one at Yankton Trail Park. If you’re willing to head a few miles east, I hear Luverne has a nice little market too. So many great options!

3: Dinner and Movie TogetherThe idea of dinner and a show must go back as long as people

have been dating, but until last year in Sioux Falls, dinner and a movie meant two separate stops. Then Cinema Falls started showing independent films that rarely, if ever, come to Sioux Falls. The venue? Icon Lounge. Now you can spend a Sunday evening watching a great movie that you otherwise probably wouldn’t see and you can order a bottle wine, some food and make the whole dinner and movie thing happen right in one cozy spot. These have quickly become evenings my beloved and I look forward to. Dinner and a movie, a perfect date night, even after all these years.

limited to Minerva’s or the Northlander. Then the Northlander went away, and Theo’s came in. But the list was still very short. Now in addition to the venerable Minerva’s, we’ve got Parker’s and k, or Wilde Sage, Bros, or Crawford’s. And that’s just downtown. Head south and you can add Bracco and Tré, expand your search towards the mall and the list grows pretty fast with Carino’s, Spezia, Carnaval and Foley’s. So many choices, so little time!

1: World Class DessertsNot that there’s anything wrong with an Avalanche from the

B&G Milky Way, but over the last few years, the dessert options in Sioux Falls have exploded. So many of the restaurants in town are making great desserts that I can’t even begin to mention them all. But my beloved and I believe that dessert is best enjoyed at home in your jammies. For years we’ve been taking home a slice of cheesecake or tiramisu. It’s not uncommon to find us returning dessert-sized ramekins to Tina kuehn at k, as she’s come to trust us enough to let us take home the dishes filled with bread puddings or pots de crème. But the to-go dessert idea has really taken off. I think it started with the now departed Whoopie Pie shop, then progressed to Queen City Bakery and Oh My Cupcakes. Now we’ve been blessed with CH Patisserie. Before Chef Chris Hanmer came to Sioux Falls, he won season two of Bravo’s Top Chef Just Desserts. Now he sells his goodies at his shop on Phillips Avenue. If the current world-class dessert options in town don’t satisfy your sweet tooth, nothing will.

Why stop at five? Well, I could go on and talk about the short-lived food truck craze, or the appearance of more sophisticated menu items like pork bellies and rabbit terrines. Or the commitment of area chefs to find local sources or the fact that we have great shopping choices from meat markets to Pomegranate. But in the end, a guy has to live within limits, so I set mine at five. Besides, that leaves room for more additions in the future.

Do yourself a favor, eat something good today.

It was a cool September evening, the skies were ominous and the clouds were spitting droplets of rain all day. I was driving

home on the highway with Jaxon, my nine-year-old, and our two neighbors Sam and Ben. It was Ben’s 8th birthday, and we had just had a fun soccer practice in the midst of the sporadic, but gentle rain. On the way home, on I-229, a sudden aroma appeared. It was the kind of smell that makes you wonder if it’s coming from your car or from someone else’s around you, but then out of nowhere, a warning came from a little Honda that sped up beside me, window rolled down, waving frantically at me. He yelled, “Flat tire!” as he pointed down at my rear tire. I waved back to him as I pulled over on the shoulder, and then that mysterious aroma that had crept into my car became painstakingly clear: burnt rubber. Jaxon plugged his nose and

asked, “What’s that smell?” I calmly thought to myself, “That’s the smell of bad wine.”

Yes, even during times of crisis (big or small) I’m thinking about wine. It was just something about that burnt smell that conjured up memories from five years ago when I was a part of an intense wine training, and we had to detect faults in wine. Burnt rubber is almost intoxicating, but a sure sign that the wine you have in front of you is bad. It is not a flaw in the wine, rather it is a fault.

In wine tasting, there is a distinction made between what is considered a flaw and a fault. Wine flaws are minor attributes that depart from what are perceived as normal wine characteristics. These include excessive sulfur dioxide, volatile acidity, Brettanomyces or “Brett aromas” and diacetyl or buttery aromas. The amount to which these aromas or attributes become

excessive is dependent on the particular tastes and recognition threshold of the wine taster. Generally, a wine exhibiting these qualities is still considered drinkable by most people. However, some flaws such as volatile acidity and Brettanomyces can be considered a fault when they are in such an excess that they overwhelm other components of the wine. Wine faults are generally major attributes that make a wine undrinkable to most wine tasters. Examples of wine faults include acetaldehyde (except when purposely induced in wines like Sherry), ethyl acetate and cork taint.

The vast majority of wine faults are detected by the nose and the distinctive aromas that they give off. However, the presence of some wine faults can be detected by visual and taste perceptions. For example, premature oxidation can be noticed by the yellowing and browning of the wine’s color. The sign of gas bubbles in wines that are not meant to be sparkling can be a sign of refermentation or malolactic fermentation happening in the bottle. unusual breaks in the color of the wine could be a sign of excessive copper, iron, or proteins that were not removed during fining or filtering. A wine with an unusual color for its variety or wine region could be a sign of excessive or insufficient maceration or poor temperature

controls during fermentation. Tactile clues of potential wine faults include the burning, acidic taste associated with volatile acidity that can make a wine seem out of balance.

The next time you smell burnt rubber (and you’re not doing 70 mph on the highway,) chances are good that the bottle you were about to enjoy came to an abrupt ending before it even began. One of the first things you learn as a Sommelier is to detect flaws or faults in wine before you even begin the tasting process. And, if you’re like my wife, you start drinking a glass of Humanitas Pinot Noir right away when you find out your husband is changing a tire on the side of highway, in the rain, with three children sitting in the car. Life is short, Carpe Vino!

At Any Age, Be AwareWhile rare, breast cancer can strike young women, too.

Nearly seven months pregnant with her second child, Shelly Clayton was doubtful that the lump she felt in her breast

could be cancerous. After all, she was only 28 years old. Yet an ultrasound showed changes in a lump that had been

checked before. Shelly had a lumpectomy, and the diagnosis came back as cancer. “I was shocked,” Shelly said. “I thought breast cancer was something that happened after 40.”

Shelly, who then lived in Tripp, S.D. and now in Tea, soon learned that she was not alone. In fact, 7 percent of all breast cancers happen to women under age 40. For Shelly, there was no family history to blame. “I was the first in my family to have breast cancer.”

At 28 weeks into a healthy pregnancy, Shelly faced some tough decisions, balancing the safety of her unborn baby with her need for cancer treatment. She opted for a mastectomy in the affected breast. The tumor, while a stage 1, was 8.6 cm in size. Three weeks after the birth of her baby girl, Kendall, Shelly began six rounds of chemotherapy as a preventative measure. The tumor was HER2 positive, so she also took Herceptin to prevent a recurrence. Later, she had the other breast removed and underwent reconstructive surgery.

“It was an anxious time. Breast cancer was always on my mind. I just had to be patient and wait,” Shelly said. In fact, the waiting was the hardest. “I had heard the horror stories about chemo, but once I had the first one out of the way and knew what it was like, it eased my fears,” said Shelly, who is a pharmacist. Her daughter, Cameron, just 3 years old at the time, became like a little adult, telling others that she was going home to take care of her mommy. “After surgery, I couldn’t lift

her into her car seat, so she learned to climb up and get in it herself,” Shelly added. Shelly’s husband, Aaron, and family helped with the added duties of taking care of a newborn.

Cancer is a scary diagnosis for anyone, but especially for a young mom. “The farther out I got from the diagnosis, the less scared I was,” Shelly said. All her checkups since have been

good, and she is only six months away from being a five-year survivor.

Shelly advises young women to know their bodies, and speak up when something doesn’t feel right. “You need to be your own advocate. It’s important to fight for your own health – not just with breast cancer, but anything.”

Shelly is an Avera “Pink Lady,” advocating for breast cancer awareness and early detection. She advises women of all ages to be aware of breast cancer and vigilant about early detection. The American Cancer Society recommends the following guidelines for early detection of breast cancer:

• Yearly mammograms starting at age 40 and continuing for as long as a woman is in good health.

• Clinical breast exam about every three years for women in

their 20s and 30s and every year for women 40 and over.• Women should know how their breasts normally look and

feel and report any breast change promptly to their health care provider. Breast self-exam is an option for women starting in their 20s.

Shelly had BRCA testing done for gene mutations which place women at higher risk for breast and ovarian cancer. It was negative, which bodes well for her daughters, Cameron, now 7, and Kendall, 4.

“Although breast cancer in young women is uncommon, it still happens – I’m living proof of that,” Shelly added.

If you’re wondering what 7-month-old can pull off a hot pink t-shirt adorned with a black zebra paired with pink socks and

multi-colored stripes, Lennan Small can.“It’s her personality,” says mom Jaclyn. “She’s a little wild

and crazy!”Jaclyn and husband Cody didn’t know whether they were

welcoming a girl or a boy, so they started with a neutral nursery in brown and yellow, which featured a brown tree that Jaclyn painted on the wall while she was pregnant.

After little girl Lennan arrived, and they started seeing her personality shine through, Jaclyn knew they needed to add a little more character to the room.

The family had taken a trip to Omaha and visited the zoo. Right from the start, little Lennan loved animals, so that sparked an idea for her bedroom…giraffe-spotted walls. Jacyln went to work painting the spots around the room.

It wouldn’t be complete without an actual giraffe painted on the wall, and Jaclyn says she credits Cody with that addition.

“He challenged me. One day he said, ‘I bet you can’t do a giraffe right there eating from the tree.’ So, I knew I needed to paint a giraffe!”

The all-brown silhouette of the giraffe seems to emerge from behind Lennan’s crib, reaching its head right up to the original tree that Jaclyn had painted.

The ceiling is painted green for an added pop of color, and below the window, two floating shelves that Cody made – one pink and one green – hold a collection of picture books and board books. Lennan is already crawling, so she’ll be able to get herself to those shelves to pick out books in no time. In the meantime, a big leather chair sits in the corner so she can have snuggle and reading time with her mom or dad.

On one wall, suspended by brown ribbons, are three wood squares with pink letters spelling out Lennan’s initials – L K S.

On the little wall between the closet and the door are hooks to hold little pink coats for all kinds of weather. “We’re outdoor people,” Jacyln says, “so we always have our jackets and hats ready to go!”

With impressive crawling speed and two teeth already at 7 months, Jaclyn laments that Lennan is growing up too soon.

But this little “wild and crazy” girl with the big smile and love of animals has a great spot to do that growing.

Choking is a particular risk for children this age as they tend to put small objects in their mouths.

What to Look ForThe U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) closely

monitors and regulates toys. Any toys made in — or imported into — the United States after 1995 must comply with CPSC standards.

here are some age-specific guidelines to keep in mind:• Toys should be large enough - at least 1 1/4” (3 centimeters)

in diameter and 2 1/4” (6 centimeters) in length - so that they can’t be swallowed or lodged in the windpipe. A small-parts tester, or choke tube, can determine if a toy is too small. If an object fits inside the tube, then it’s too small for a young child. If you can’t find one of these products, a toilet paper roll can be used for the same purpose.

• Avoid marbles, coins, balls, and games with balls that are 1.75 inches (4.4 centimeters) in diameter or less because they can become lodged in the throat above the windpipe and restrict breathing.

• Battery-operated toys should have battery cases that secure with screws so that kids cannot pry them open. Batteries and battery fluid pose serious risks, including choking, internal bleeding, and chemical burns.

• When checking a toy for a baby or toddler, make sure it’s unbreakable and strong enough to withstand chewing. Also, make sure it doesn’t have: sharp ends or small parts like eyes, wheels, or buttons that can be pulled loose, small ends that can extend into the back of the mouth, strings longer than 7 inches (18 centimeters), or parts that could become pinch points for small fingers.

• Most riding toys can be used once a child is able to sit up well while unsupported - but check with the manufacturer’s recommendation. Riding toys like rocking horses and wagons should come with safety harnesses or straps and be stable and secure enough to prevent tipping.

• Stuffed animals and other toys that are sold or given away at carnivals, fairs, and in vending machines are not required to meet safety standards. Check carnival toys carefully for loose parts and sharp edges before giving them to your infant.

Materials Needed: Cleaned plastic gallon milk jugs, black permanent marker, craft knife, string of clear low wattage holiday lights.

Instructions: Use the permanent marker to draw ghost faces with various expressions on the milk jugs. Be sure to leave the caps on while you do this, in order to ensure the jugs don’t dent from any pressure. Use the craft knife to cut a hole in the back of each jug, about a half-dollar in size. Place the jugs near each other and place the string lights between them, making sure to fill the jugs with several light bulbs each. Also, be sure to have an extension cord available and place the jugs in a location where you will be able to easily plug in the lights and see the ghosts’ faces glow.

Materials Needed: Pumpkins in various shapes and sizes (preferably in a more oval shape), spray paint in yellow and white, and an area where you can get messy.

Instructions: This project is pretty simple. Lay out an old bed sheet or some newspaper, and turn the pumpkins upside down so you can spray the bottom third of them a yellow color. If you don’t have spray paint, craft paint would work as well. Let these dry, then turn them over and spray the top portion a white color, leaving the middle orange. If it helps, cover the middle of the pumpkin with something so you don’t go too far with the yellow or white color. You will end up with pumpkins that look like candy corn, which will light up the faces of any tricker treaters that pass by.

Materials Needed: Scissors, craft glue, large orange button, black and natural raffia, large toothpick, black marker, orange paper, black craft foam sheet, double sided tape.

Instructions: Using the scissors, cut a witch cape out of the black craft foam sheet. Glue the orange button onto the top of the cape, forming the witch’s head. Cut some hair from the black raffia, and glue it to the orange button on either side. Cut out a witch hat from the black craft foam and glue on top of the orange button and black raffia hair. Cut some natural raffia to form the end of a broom, and glue this to the end of a big toothpick, then set aside. Cut a square out of the orange paper and write a phrase with black marker, such as “Push if you Dare”. Glue this onto the broomstick and allow to dry. Measure the doorbell you would like to use and cut its shape out of the witch’s cape, which is the first thing you cut out. Situate the doorbell through the cape and attach it to the house with double sided tape. Glue the broomstick to the cape alongside the doorbell, overlapping if possible, yet leaving enough room to ring the doorbell. If the orange button doesn’t already have two holes where the eyes should be, draw the eyes and a face for the witch with a permanent black marker.

Instructions: Another easy project, this can be used for all kinds of holidays. Paint the scraps of wood with your choice of festive phrases, such as “beware” and “trick or treat”, and be sure to leave enough room for every letter in the phrase you plan to write. If you want to preserve the yard stake for future Halloween usage, be sure to apply a coat of outdoor wood varnish to the scraps and the stake when the paint is dry. Attach the finished signs to the stake with screws or nails, making sure they are sturdy and won’t turn. Find a good place in the yard to put your spooky yard stake, and you are finished.

Take one South Dakota field, add in some inspired and educational

entertainment, and top it off with a splash of agricultural artistry.

What do you get? One corny experience. But in this case, corny is a compliment.

In addition to their “day jobs” as farmers, Karen Sproul and her

husband Bob have owned and operated the Heartland Country Corn

Maze for 14 years. This agriculture-meets-artistry entertainment

venue, tucked just southeast of Harrisburg along Highway 11, has

proven itself to be a great autumn escape for an amazingly fun time

in the country.

We were all ears as we sat down with Karen along the edge of the

corn field to learn more about this growing business.


thanks for visiting with us today, karen. First off, I just have to

ask: how does one decide to grow a corn maze? Is it like in the

movie Field of dreams—you wake up one day and just say, “If we

build it, they will come?”

(Laughs.) Actually, we went on a family vacation out to the Black

Hills a long time ago and went through the wooden maze out there

and had a blast. We just loved it. We thought it would be cool to

have something like that on this side of the state, but the cost of

lumber was just so expensive. We had corn, so we thought, “Let’s

just try a corn maze.”

Were corn mazes common at the time?

No, I think we were the first one in this area. We actually toured

some other corn mazes in Minnesota and Wisconsin and found

some ideas in farm magazines to get started.

that sounds pretty innovative. I know you’ve had several

different designs that you’ve cut into the corn over the years—

everything from owls to dinosaurs to butterflies to this year’s

swan design. how do you select the design each year?

We just brainstorm and talk about it as a family. We also take

suggestions from others. We started out doing designs native to

South Dakota—the buffalo, pheasant, deer, and such—but now

we’ve expanded to whatever will make an interesting maze.

So once you select the design, what happens next?

During the winter when we’re not so busy with the farm, we

draw it out on graph paper and come up with the trivia questions

and answers that are located at the checkpoints throughout the

maze. Then we wait for the weather to determine when we can

plant the corn. This year it was really late. Once the corn starts to

grow to about six or eight inches, we take the drawing and count

rows. We mark it all out and then mow the corn down according to

the drawing. We have to mow it two or three times really far down

because it keeps coming back.

you mean you do this all manually? It’s not done using GPS or

anything?

No, it’s all manual. I usually draw the design and then my

husband will draw the straight paths.

So you’re an artist, too?

(Laughs.) Oh no! That’s why I start in the winter!

Well, I think you’re an artist, and your medium is really tall corn!

but it’s about 12 feet tall. Corn loves humidity.

So, what happens to the corn after the maze closes for the

season?

We harvest it with the rest of our crops.

that seems like a pretty eco-friendly form of entertainment. has

anyone ever gotten lost in the maze?

Not permanently. (Laughs.)

Well, that’s reassuring! For those who have never been to a corn

maze, what do you do once you get here? do you just wander

around the field?

At our maze, you get a card that has 10 questions on it and a map

that shows the design and where the checkpoints are located. The

questions are generally either related to the design or about corn or

agriculture. We also have a hidden checkpoint that is not shown on

the map. If you find that design, you punch your card and you get a

free item from the concession stand.

and you also have a haunted maze around halloween, right?

Yes, we work together with college kids who come out and

make the maze spooky for us around Halloween time. The wind

rustling through the corn leaves at night can be spooky enough

for some people, but yes, we have people dressed as spooks and

the chainsaw guy out there, too. We usually do that the weekend

around Halloween, so this year the Haunted Maze will be on Friday,

October 25th and Saturday, October 26th. We open from 6 – 9:30

p.m. It’s still light at 6, so if you have younger children, you might

want to come then. It gets pretty spooky after dark.

So after 14 years, what surprises you the most about running a

corn maze?

Well, the fact that we haven’t had to shut down because of

weather—hail or the corn not growing—is amazing. And I don’t

know if this is surprising, but I just love when teenagers come with

their families. A lot of times when they come out to the maze, they

are not in the best mood or they are a little grouchy. When they

come out of the maze, they are just laughing and have big smiles

on their faces and are joking around. It seems like they’ve had so

much fun out there. We have had people get engaged out here, too.

I guess that’s a little surprising.

do you have a favorite corny joke?

Well, we have a saying out here. Watch what you say because the

corn is full of ears.

October is my favorite month. The weather is warm during the day, cool in the evenings and it’s time to harvest. It

also includes Homecoming, Halloween and the start of Hunting Season. October is a great month!

Piper appreciates that it is finally cool enough to play and explore the grove. For the heavy coated breeds, it is truly a comfortable time. It affords us the opportunity to exercise or play any time of the day. It will help get her in shape and to lose some weight.

If your pet is out of shape, start slow and steadily increase the length and intensity of your exercise. This will help them become stronger and gain endurance. The training needs to take several weeks. If you take your best friend off the couch and expect them to hunt all day long, bad things can happen.

Dogs’ muscles and joints need to be in shape to prevent serious injury. ACL tears are very common tendon injuries in

people and pets. Carrying too much weight and doing strenuous activities can expose them to damage. It is very important that both hunter and dog are used to the amount of exercise that goes into hunting.

Dogs’ feet are also susceptible to damage. Piper has very soft feet from only running on grass and the deep pile carpet of the house. Running on hard or rough surfaces will give dogs blisters on their feet just like people. Start slowly, increasing their time on hard surfaces to build up thick foot pads that won’t blister. If they will wear boots for protection, that would be the best.

Make sure your vaccines are up to date to protect them as well. Rabies is always a concern when we walk, play or hunt in areas where there is wildlife. It is their home and we are crashing their party after all. If you go to the western areas of South Dakota, rattlesnake vaccine is a good idea to prevent serious injury from their bites.

If you live or “go out to the farm” be very careful around the harvest machines. The new equipment is very big and fast. Every year, we work on dogs that tangle with machinery. Also, try to keep them out of the barb wire and to avoid eating mouse or rat bait hidden in garages or storage sheds.

Then there is Halloween. What could better than dressing up and getting candy? Chocolate and the other spoils of Trick or Treating need to be up and out of the reach of pets. It is a great temptation that could end in diarrhea, vomiting and a belly ache.

Not all pets are happy about Halloween. There can be too many ghosts, witches and Ninja warriors to deal with. If your pet is afraid or aggressive, make sure you find them a quiet, safe area to hide out in until the goblins and beasts are done making the rounds.

October is a great time to take a walk, enjoy the harvest moon and experience the beautiful change of season.

1938 National Corn Husking Contest

On a windy, cold, and damp third of November 1938, the eyes and ears of the nation focused on Dell Rapids, host to the greatest

annual competition of American agriculture: the National Corn Husking Contest. An estimated 125,000 people from all over the nation came to this location, the farm of Jim and Nellie Jensen. They came to watch twenty-one contestants, including two huskers from South Dakota, pick corn by hand during timed competition.

An 80-acre site known as “Tent City” contained an Indian village, 48 concession stands, farm machinery, a replica of Mount Rushmore, a fire department, an emergency hospital with a corps of physicians, hundreds of police officers, telegraph and telephone stations, a post office, and parking areas for 35,000 cars. This was said to be the largest gathering ever recorded in South Dakota up to that time.

The day of the contest opened with a two-mile parade. It featured 7 marching bands, contest queen venita Apply, 14 other queen contestants, political notables, brightly decorated huskers’ wagons, a band of Oglala Sioux Indians, and a great array of up-to-the-minute farm machinery.

At 11:44 a.m. the starting bomb exploded signaling the beginning of the contest. Urged on by the cheering crowds, the contestants, representing 11 corn-growing states, rapidly moved down the field. Each competitor hand-ripped ears of corn from the stalks, two rows of corn at a time. They were followed by contest marshals and referees totaling nearly 1000 men. Score guards with ropes kept away the eager milling crowd while gleaners gathered any remaining marketable ears to be weighed and charged against the contestants. Thousands of corn ears were tossed in a steady stream against the bang boards of the contestants’ wagons.

Bands played briskly while the loudspeaker system filled the air with official announcements, calls for individuals, and appeals for the parents of lost children. The NBC radio network carried a live “bang-by-bang” description of the contest.

Despite the damp penetrating cold, the contestants weaved and crouched to reach low ears of corn and to retrieve fallen ears. Many slipped on the damp earth. It was a pressing grind from start to finish as they picked, husked, and tossed corn ears into the filling wagons, averaging one ear a second. There were no time-outs and no stops for water as the minutes clicked away.

At the close of the 80-minute contest, Ted Balko of Redwood Falls, MN, the 1934 champion, won his second national contest. He hand-husked a net of 22.64 bushels of corn to end the 1938 “Battle of the Bang Boards.”

a Postcard Mailed from the Contest SiteRON ROBINSON:Corn husking contests became a popular American pastime in the 1920s, and the National Corn Husking Contest grew to become the greatest of all outdoor athletic and agricultural events in the country. South Dakota received the honor to host the contest in 1938. In early spring, four fields were fertilized and planted with the same hybrid corn. Six weeks before the November contest, the Jim and Nellie Jensen farm, located northeast of Dell Rapids, was chosen to host the 1938 National Corn Husking Contest.
