Flying With Great Aim

Jerry Brown announces his milestones. -Photo by Terry Miller

2011: Milestones and Accomplishments of Governor

Jerry BrownThe Office of Governor

Edmund G. Brown Jr.has just released “2011: Milestones and Accomplishments,” a year-in-review report on the Governor’s actions since tak-ing office.

The report covers the ac-tions Governor Brown took in 2011 to:

Balance the budget honestly and cut our deficit

in half. Enact historic public safety realignment. Drive job creation and economic devel-opment. Cut waste and curb spending. Make government more efficient. Champion re-newable energy and environ-mental sustainability. Pursue bold, fair pension reform. Promote equality and justice

The interactive report also covers other highlights,

including the State of the State Address, the Royal visit, Sutter Brown’s appointment as First Dog, the California Hall of Fame and more.

“2011: Milestones and Accomplishments” can be viewed on the Governor’s website: www.gov.ca.gov. Click on any tab or button to access a page.

It was the year 1997. I was standing amidst the crowd awaiting the start of the Pasadena Rose Parade. All heads were turned up-ward as the Stealth Bomber flew over Colorado Boule-vard. The ooos, aaahs and audible gasps provided a tranquility to the thunder-peal of the bomber's en-gines.

Though designed for death and destruction, it was truly an awesome sight of grace and beauty. To stand directly under its path was an experience to defy description. A friend be-side me said, "It looks just like a graceful bird soaring through the air."

That remark broke my spell. It caused me to have

an instant, terrible vision. I said, "Thank God it's not a bird. It would do a giant poop on my car." You see, I am firmly convinced that every crow, bluejay, par-rot and seagull living in or passing through Southern California has a definite goal to poop on my car. Many have already scored their objective.

I suffer the agony of heat to avoid parking un-der a tree. They target me in flight. Not only does my car get splatted in wide-open spaces but it attracts birds with a special talent, birds that can poop verti-cally. They splat my side windows! How do they do that?

Do they fly in reverse? Do they fly faster than the speed of their droppings? Still, why don't those drop-pings land on a horizontal surface? Furthermore, how do they manage to hit the top part of the window with the big splat so that the liq-uid part runs all down the

side to the point where the window rolls into the door. I guess I should be thank-ful the windows have never been down when these fly-ing artists took aim. Not yet anyway.

Even when they hit my windshield, it's never in an out-of-the-way place. Never along the side or down the middle. Always in front of the steering wheel directly in my line of vision. Ever try to drive without staring at a spot on the windshield? Es-pecially a big, black, purple and white spot?

That's another point of fascination. Do all birds eat purple berries or just the ones who poop on my car? One would think that with a varietal diet, it would be kind of psychedelic. Now that's an intriguing thought isn't it?

At any rate, since that Stealth Bomber was suppos-edly designed to protect us, I hope its aim is as good as the birds of Southern Cali-fornia.

In a time of political tur-moil within his own country and strained relations with the Western world, Iranian director Asghar Farhadi has somehow managed to make a powerful and moving film about a woman’s desire to leave Iran that is being lauded not only by the inter-national film community but by Iran’s own cultural pow-ers that be. “A Separation” is a domestic drama about many things—marriage, social class, religion—but, instead of making a grand political statement (or try to, that is, as much as one could in a theoc-

racy) Farhadi has filtered big themes through an intense yet intimate portrayal of two Iranian, middle-class couples which, artistically speaking, is the most poignant statement about Iran to come out this century. Wife Simin (Leila Hatami) wants to divorce her husband Nader (Peyman Maadi) and take their 11-year old daughter Termeh (Sarina Farhadi) out of the country for reasons that are never clearly articulated but not difficult to guess. Denied her request by an unsympathetic judge, Simin leaves Nader anyway and begins what seems like

a futile custody battle for her daughter. Forced to care for his Alzheimer stricken father alone, Nader hires Razieh (Sareh Bayat), a working-class wife and mother, to help him. Razieh, however, doesn’t tell her devout, ultra-conservative husband Hodjat (Shahab Hosseini) about the job because he would not approve, and as she struggles with the immense difficulties of caring for Nader’s father while keeping the job a se-cret, things begin to unravel for both couples, culminating in a tragic accident that affects everyone.

Happy New YearMy New Year’s Eve

started with those dreaded words, ”Mommm! I have a stomach ache.” Followed by that horrible retching sound. Yes, the flu had hit our house.

For a teenager, nothing could be worse. Jack tried to convince us that he was well enough to go with us to our friend’s New Year’s Eve party. But he wasn’t.

I felt bad for him, so I bought a bag of pretzels, something he could eat that wouldn’t upset his tummy.

“Pretzels?” my husband questioned. “Why pretzels? Saltines are what he needs.”

“But pretzels are his favorite.” I hate it when he questions my motherly wis-dom.

“They’re too hard to digest.” And with that Ben-jie took one and bit into it. “AAAHHH!” he shrieked in pain.

“What happened?”“I throoke a tooth on

that thretzel!” He showed me half a broken tooth and half a filling; Not in his mouth, but in the palm of his hand.

“Mom! I think I’m go-ing to be sick again.”

Okay maybe pretzels weren’t the best idea.

I ran upstairs to check

on Jack just as he was dash-ing for the bathroom. Our heads collided and I heard a crack like I had never heard before. Suddenly blood was everywhere, and it was com-ing from me.

“Benjie! I think I broke my nose!”

“Thwhat?”“Get some ice. Quick!”And so there we were.

Jack sprawled out on the bathroom floor, Benjie hold-ing his mouth, and now me lying down with a huge Bar-bie ice pack covering my face.

“Well, it’s not broken,” “Doctor Benjie’ surmised. “But you do look like a prize fighter.”

Great. It was New Year’s Eve and we still had a party to go to.

We decided to split up so Jack wouldn’t be alone on this festive night. Sam, Lindsay and I took the first party shift and went around the corner to the neighbor’s house. Once there, I was hav-ing so much fun that by the time Benjie showed up to let me go home, I had decided that Jack was a big boy and could be home alone.

“In a minute,” I pleaded like a little kid, before pop-

ping a stuffed jalapeno pep-per in my mouth. “AAAAH-HH!” It was like biting into Mt. Vesuvius. The lava-like cheese fused to my tongue and the roof of my mouth. I couldn’t pull it out. Tears rolled down my cheeks. Only fine Champaign could squelch it.

By now it was 11:30. Lindsay went back home with her dad, leaving Sam and I at the party promising to get home by midnight. Not surprisingly it took lon-ger than I had anticipated saying our good-byes and well wishes to all for the New Year. We had only 3 ½ minutes to make it home. I grabbed Sam’s hand and made a mad dash through the dark misty street.

“Mama, I’m scared.”I squeezed his hand.

“Don’t be scared I’m here. Besides you have your Nerf gun to protect you.”

We threw our front door open as the ball dropped. We made it. We were togeth-er for the start of 2012.

I kissed my husband with my swollen nose and burned lips, “Thappy thew thear, thunny!”

“Thappy thew thear!”

Kicking in the New Year with 3000 New Friends

On September 30, 2011, the Pasadena Fire Department responded to the 59 South Meredith regarding a structure fire at an apartment building. While extinguishing the fire, PFD personnel discov-ered a deceased body in one of the apartments. The decedent was identified as Maria Donnelly, female-27 of Pasadena.

Pasadena Police Ho-micide Detectives and the Pasadena Fire Depart-ment Arson Investigator

responded to the scene. Through their investiga-tion and several weeks of diligent work, detectives identified Ms. Donnelly’s boyfriend as the suspect who beat her to death and set the victim’s apartment on fire in an attempt to de-stroy evidence.

Detectives arrested suspect Corey Lavelle Green, male-28 of Los An-geles. The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office filed charges of murder, arson, and 1st degree resi-

dential burglary. Suspect Green is being held on $1,300,000 bail. The pre-liminary hearing date will be determined on Febru-ary 16, 2012.

Domestic violence continues to be a national problem. If you or some-one else you know needs intervention, please con-tact your local police de-partment, community do-mestic violence program or report anonymously to CRIME STOPPERS http://lacrimestoppers.org.

Revelers packed Old Town Monrovia Saturday night to celebrate the inau-gural New Years Celebra-tion. Restaurants were open to make sure the community of Monrovia had a festive New Years. Rudy Cancrellon, owner Rudy’s Restaurant pro-vided the wine and beer garden in the middle of

Myrtle along with party favorites and New Years hats. This event was spon-sored by The Old Town Merchants Association in conjunction with Kiwanis of Monrovia and other sponsors. As the ‘Lance & Gary Show’ played their music, people young and old danced the night away. An estimated 3,000 people

attended the event. Mayor Mary Ann Lutz was filled with jubilation and stated, “This was a success and we definitely want to have this next year.” While others celebrated the ball being dropped in Times Square, Monrovia elevated the glowing ball like a rising sun on a new year. Happy 2012.

The City of Duarte and Duarte Chamber of Commerce will once again partner with Best Jobs Magazine to host “Get Back to Work,” an event to help professionals con-nect with employers. Open to the general public and free of charge, the event will take place Wednes-day, Jan. 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Duarte Community Center, 1600 Huntington Dr.

This will be the fourth time in a year that the City and Chamber have joined forces with Best Jobs Magazine. More than 300 job seekers turned out for the last Get Back to Work event in Duarte in October.

“These are excellent

networking events for job seekers offering face-to-face time with prospective employers and fresh leads on actual job openings. By hosting these events, we hope to give our residents who want to be gainfully employed opportunities and resources to get back to work,” said Deputy City Manager, Karen Herrera.

Unlike traditional job fairs, in addition to meeting with employers, job seekers will be able to network with employment resources such as Goodwill Industries and Workforce Investment Board, meet with job search assistants, apply for jobs by proxy, and attend a workshop from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. to sharpen their job search-

ing skills and focus. The “By Proxy” appli-

cation process showcases open positions for employ-ers who do not typically at-tend job fairs or are unable to exhibit at the event, yet are hiring. A job seeker’s resume is forwarded direct-ly to a hiring manager as opposed to a general mail-box. Best Jobs Magazine territory managers canvass the host city and surround-ing areas each month to uncover available jobs. They confirm the validity of the positions, identify the hiring manager’s con-tact information, and then showcase the positions in the By Proxy section of the Get Back to Work Now event.

Monrovia’s Mayor Mary Ann Lutz will deliv-er her annual State of the City address on Tuesday, January 24 at the Kriko-

rian Premiere Theatre in Old Town. The public is invited to attend, but, be-cause seating is limited, reservations are required.

The address will begin at 7 p.m. Please phone (626) 303-6600 to make a reser-vation to attend. There is no charge.

Temple City Shooting

Deputy Nunez Makes Arrest

day. Detectives have

learned that a deputy conducted a traffic stop of a bicycle at the loca-tion. After conducting an investigation, the deputy began to affect an arrest of the bicyclist (suspect) for a narcotics charge. The deputy and the suspect be-came involved in a physi-cal struggle, during which a deputy-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect fled the scene and it is unknown if he was struck.

The deputy was trans-ported to a local hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and later released.

The suspect is de-scribed as a male His-panic, approximately 35 years old, 5'8" tall, and 135 pounds.

The search and inves-tigation is still on-going.

Anyone with informa-tion about the suspect is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sher-iff's Department's Temple Station at 626-285-7171. If

you prefer to provide in-formation anonymously, you may call "Crime Stop-pers" by dialing (800) 222-TIPS (8477), or texting the letters TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or by using the website http://lacrimestoppers.org.

Whenever an Officer-Involved Shooting oc-curs involving Los An-geles County Sheriff's deputies and the suspect is not wounded, multiple investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investiga-

tions by the Sheriff's In-ternal Affairs Bureau, as well as Sheriff's station or Detectives Division inves-tigators. Attorneys with the Los Angeles Office of Independent Review also respond to the scene and have full access to the facts known to the Sheriff's De-partment throughout every phase of these thorough investigations. Once con-cluded, every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.

America located on Valley Boulevard, Rosemead.

Simultaneously, Dep-uty Nunez, who was pa-trolling near the bank on Muscatel Avenue, was be-ing flagged down by a bank

employee. The employee pointed out the suspect and advised Deputy Nunez what occurred. Deputy Nunez immediately detained the suspect.

Suspect Daniel Solis

had entered the bank and presented a note to the teller demanding cash. The suspect became suspicious and fled prior to obtaining any money. As the suspect casually walked from the lo-

cation, he was detained by Deputy Nunez. Agents from the FBI and Major Crimes Bureau responded to the location to conduct further investigation.

Christmas is over, the new year has begun, and it is time to take down the Christmas decorations, es-pecially the tree. If your family opted for a freshly cut tree, local cities have arranged for these trees to be recycled. If you are in doubt as to the rules for this recycling, call your city or check the city’s website. Below are the rules for a few local communities.

MonroviaFrom December 26

to January 13, Athens Services will be collecting Christmas trees for recy-

cling. To participate, resi-dents should simply place a tree out on the curbside the night before the regular trash collection date, or be-fore 6 a.m. that morning.

PasadenaResidents with trash

pickup services from the city of Pasadena may place their trees curbside to be picked up on their regular trash pickup days between Jan. 3 and 13. All stands, ornaments and lights must be removed from trees that are dropped off or picked up so the trunks and branches can be recycled

as mulch. Artificial trees will not be accepted.

ArcadiaWaste Management

will pick up the trees on your regular collection day until January 11. All tinsel, garlands, lights, stands and other decorations must be removed from the tree. If the tree is over 6 feet tall, it must be cut in half. Flocked tree will be accept-ed, but cannot be recycled.

Temple City Athens Disposal will

collect trees on your regu-lar trash day and should be placed curbside by 6 a.m.

on that day, All tinsel, gar-lands, lights, metal stands and other decorations must be removed from the tree. If the tree is over 6 feet tall, it must be cut in half. Flocked trees and those coated with a fire retardant will be accepted. Trees in plastic bags will not be collected. Trees can also be dropped off at the city yard, 9167 La Rosa Dr.

Next year avoid this is-sue. Buy a living tree and plant it after the holidays.

of California Cities filed a petition asking the court to overturn both Assembly Bill 1X 26 and Assembly Bill 1X 27. On August 11, the court agreed to hear the lawsuit and issued a partial stay of various provisions of both bills and to issue a deci-sion before January 15, 2012. The court expedited briefing

and argument on the matter and held oral argument on November 10.

In a majority opinion authored by Associate Jus-tice Kathryn M. Werdegar, the court upheld the enact-ment of Assembly Bill 1X 26, dissolving redevelopment agencies and redirecting their property tax revenues.

The court explained that, be-cause the Legislature had the authority to create redevel-opment agencies, it also had the corollary power to dis-solve them. The court noted that although Proposition 22, as enacted by the voters in 2010, amended the state Constitution to impose ad-ditional limits on the state’s fiscal powers, nothing in that initiative or other parts of the state Constitution guaranteed the continued existence of re-development agencies.

The majority, however, held that Assembly Bill 1X 27 was unconstitutional be-cause it conditioned the abil-ity of redevelopment agen-cies to conduct new business on agreeing to an annual payment plan based on a portion of property tax rev-enues allocated to redevel-opment agencies. The court explained that this opt-in plan violated Proposition 22 because that measure arose in opposition to similar past legislation and was intended to preclude further required payments based on redevel-opment agency property tax revenues.

The majority opinion by Justice Werdegar was signed by Associate Justices Joyce L. Kennard, Marvin R. Bax-ter, Ming W. Chin, Carol A. Corrigan, and Goodwin Liu.

Chief Justice Tani Can-til-Sakauye joined the majori-ty opinion upholding Assem-bly Bill 1X 26, but dissented with respect to the conclu-sion that Assembly Bill AB

1X 27 was unconstitutional. The Chief Justice ob-

served that neither Proposi-tion 22’s history nor its ex-press language appeared to prohibit the opt-in payment plan created by Assembly Bill 1X 27. The dissenting opinion noted that it ap-peared the Legislature had carefully drafted Assembly Bill 1X 27 so as not to vio-late Proposition 22 by allow-ing the annual payment to come from any local rev-enue source and not specifi-cally redevelopment agency funds, which Proposition 22 expressly protects. The Chief Justice concluded that Assembly Bill 1X 27 does not facially conflict with the state Constitution and fur-ther noted that the parties presented no evidence that the measure would actually violate the state constitution in practice.

The court unanimously reformed Assembly Bill 1X 26, which had been largely stayed during the pendency of this action, by extending its various deadlines by four months.

Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. issued the follow-ing statement regarding to-day’s ruling by the Califor-nia Supreme Court:

“Today’s ruling by the California Supreme Court validates a key component of the state budget and guaran-tees more than a billion dol-lars of ongoing funding for schools and public safety.”

Red Robin Gourmet Burgers, Inc. (www.re-drobin.com), a casual din-ing restaurant chain found-ed in 1969 that operates through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Red Robin International, Inc., is the gourmet burger expert, fa-mous for serving more than two dozen crave able, high-quality burgers.

In an effort to reduce pet overpopulation, the Pasa-dena Humane Society & SPCA will be offering free spay and neuter surgeries for Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes starting Jan. 1. Chihua-huas have become a promi-nent part of the general ken-nel population.

The new program, which is part of the agency’s Spay and Neuter in Pasade-na (SNiP) program, is devel-oped to encourage owners to sterilize their Chihuahuas, and, in turn, reduce over-population. The free service applies to Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes up to 15 pounds for residents of the shelter’s service cities -- Pasa-dena, South Pasadena, San Marino, Sierra Madre, La Cañada Flintridge, Arcadia and Glendale. Owners can also request their dog to be microchipped at no ad-ditional charge. Since June 2010, PHS has developed strong partnerships with East Coast shelters to balance the

population by transporting more than 200 Chihuahuas to Richmond, Va. and Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

“This has been an ongo-ing trend for quite some time now,” said Ricky Whitman, spokesperson for the Pasade-na Humane Society. “We’re striving to help the animals and their owners through our public clinic. This is a wonderful resource we hope pet owners will use.”

SNiP was developed

more than 10 years ago to offer low-cost services to resi-dents in the agency’s seven service cities. The program also provides a public low-cost vaccine clinic for cats and dogs every year. Pets must be a minimum of two months old and weigh at least two pounds to have sur-gery. Appointments are re-quired and can be made by calling the SNiP Coordinator at (626) 792-7151 extension 138.

Arcadia Rotary Donates toHospital’s New Tower

The Arcadia Rotary Club contributed to Arca-dia Methodist Hospital’s dream of a new five-story patient tower with a gener-ous donation of $25,000 to the project.

The North Tower, as it’s called, opened recently with 155,000-square-feet of new workspace housed on six floors, including a base-ment.

“During the 2008-09 Ro-

tary year, I recommended the donation to our board of directors and they ap-proved a pledge of $25,000 to be paid over a three-year period,” said Rotary past president Bruce McCallum. “The funds were used to completely furnish a patient room in the North Wing.”

The club’s donation is recognized by a nameplate installed outside a fourth floor patient room.

“Our club is very proud to make this donation to Ar-cadia Methodist Hospital and happy for our role in helping those patients that will benefit from the hospi-tal’s expansion,” said Mc-Callum. “This is but one example of the many signifi-cant contributions the Arca-dia Rotary Club has made in its 85 years of existence to the City of Arcadia.”

streets seemed to enjoy every minute.

There was a heavy po-lice presence, and in fact one float, US Bank, was escoreted by approximate 10 Pasadena Police officers as it made its way down Colorado. The extra security presumably was because of the Occupy movement.

However there no inci-dents during the parade but their were 10 pre-parade ar-rests according to the Pasa-dena Police Dept.

After the parade, Oc-cupy the Rose Parade saw about 4,000 plus people march behind the end of the parade carrying a mas-sive Constitution replica and countless signs voicing opin-

ions about banks and mort-gage holders.

The protestors also formed a giant Octopus and continued their protest to City Hall where a Rally was held.

Santa Anita Park, which opened its winter/spring meeting with an on-track crowd of 44,579 on Dec. 26, posted significant across the board gains through the first six days of its 79-day meet ac-cording to racetrack officials. Through six days, on-track attendance is up 21 percent, while on-track handle is up 11 percent.

“Our opening day crowd was the biggest it’s been since 1994 and our pari-mutuel figures have been up on-track and across the coun-try,” said Santa Anita Presi-dent George Haines. “We’re obviously very pleased to be off to such a strong start and we want to sincerely thank our fans and horsemen for making this possible. It’s great to be able to renew ac-quaintances with so many of them and we’ve also seen a lot of new people here in the first week as well. We can’t thank them enough and we want all of them to know that customer service continues to be a huge priority for us here at Santa Anita.

“We’ve been lucky with the weather and our field size has been good. We’ve been able to average nine horses

per race and there’s no ques-tion that has provided better gambling opportunities for our players.”

In addition to large on-track gains, Santa Anita’s out-of-state handle skyrock-eted, showing an 18 percent increase over a year ago. Southern California Off Track Wagering Inc. (SCO-TWinc) handle showed a 10 percent increase and all sources Santa Anita handle was up 14 percent through week-one.

“By any accounting, these are substantial increas-es,” said Haines. “Our long range weather forecast is good and we’ve got good momentum. We have a number of promotions slated

for the month of January and we’ve got a solid stakes schedule ahead as well. We hope to sustain this momen-tum and we’ll continue to market and promote very ag-gressively.”

Santa Anita begins a four-day race week on Thurs-day with first post time at 12:30 p.m. The Grade III, $100,000 Sham Stakes for 3-year-olds and the Grade III, $150,000 San Pasqual Stakes for older horses will highlight Saturday’s card.

Imagine living in the old days of dirt roads and having to walk to a river, get your own water in hand-made bas-kets, then trek back to drink, cook and use the water for painting, cleaning and other uses. So, where was the near-est river or stream?

On Saturday, Jan. 7, at 11 a.m. at San Gabriel Mis-sion Museum as the focus of San Gabriel Mission History Day No. 81, historian and watermaster Mike Hart will unveil maps of the early San Gabriel Mission-era water systems in the western San Gabriel Valley. Hart says they appear to be the first of their kind available to the public for display.

Hart’s research spanned 17 years to develop these wa-ter maps of San Gabriel Mis-sion, El Molino Viejo (known as the Old Mill) and La Presa Mill, and a few other works that some people have called unmatched while visiting his current exhibit at Hunting-ton Library and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, ac-cording to a mission spokes-person.

“It’s been interesting and exciting as these maps and drawings and paintings have come together,” said Hart, who is retired after working nearly 40 years as

vice president and general manager of Sunny Slope Wa-ter Company in Pasadena.

Visiting a local historic landmark may not sound exciting to a few people, until they visit a site like San Ga-briel Mission where you can imagine seeing the Gabriele-no-Tongva Indians and other people in the early mission era simply going about their daily tasks of making adobe bricks for buildings, plant-ing food crops, and creating clay pots that were used in kitchens to help cook food needed to survive, said Al Sanchez, mission business manager. “They first had to have water to survive and to use during their day.”

Orders for prints of all eight artworks is available at www.michaeljhart.com. Hart said he will have all eight artworks available for view-ing on Jan. 7, and can take orders. He and his family have donated three special museum-quality framed art-works to San Gabriel Mission for permanent display after the unveiling on Jan. 7.

This event is planned as an opportunity for the public to interact with Hart in an informal setting so that ev-eryone can share information and learn more about history, said a mission spokesperson.

JANUARY 5, 2012 - JANUARY 11, 2012 19 BeAcoNMediANews.coM

While the pre parade could be described as a family gathering along the parade route, it was mostly peaceful and quite with the exception of the a few arrests made between January 1 at 5:00 p.m. and January 2 at 5:00 a.m.

There were a total of 10 arrests, 6 misdemeanors (4

drunk in public) and 4 felo-nies throughout the evening and early morning. This rep-resented a decrease in the number of arrests compared to previous years, according to the Pasadena Police Dept.

One of those incarcerat-ed was Michael Buell, 45, of Fallbrook, who was arrested by the Pasadena Police De-

partment Sunday and initial-ly charged with felony pos-session of a weapon. Those charges were later reduced to a misdemeanor. Buell had planned on attending the Occupy the Rose Parade. He was released Wednesday.

Pasadena police de-tained Buell after he alleg-edly jaywalked across the

three-way intersection of Thurgood Marshall Street and North Euclid Avenue on Sunday night and ap-prently did not cooperate with the arresting officer’s request.

As the parade ended, so did the coverage by many television stations which quickly diverted their camer-as away from the nearly 4000 protesters who peacefully followed the annual New Year’s Day Parade along with the religious protesters which traditionally follow the police cars post parade?

Carrying a massive rep-lica of the Constitution, fel-low marchers met with small amount of disdain from conservative parade goers on Orange Grove but the majority of people were re-spectful of the group’s right to freedom of speech as they marched to city hall.

The group, which con-sisted of individuals of all ages and walks of life, held signs aloft ranging from the serious, to the sublime and some just plain comical.

One sign read “Tea Par-ty Poopers International” an-other …”Keep Your Hands off MY Parade.”

People were dressed in typical ‘Occupy’ attire, some

wearing masks and some beating drums to the beat of the Wall Street ‘fat cats’ de-picted by cigar smoking me-nin suits with wads of cash spewing from every pocket.

There was a moment when the Occupy Protest looked more like the Doo Dah Parade with a dash of Burning Man thrown in for good measure. The peace-ful, party atmosphere of the Rose Parade’s nemesis, the famous and upcoming Doo Dah Parade was once again reborn.

Costumes, music bal-loons, and a human octopus were met with a consider-able show of force from the local police agencies, espe-cially the Los Angeles Sher-iff’s Dept which staged over 40 officers in full riot gear at the corner of Orange Grove and Colorado to accompany the protesters .At times, the peaceful protest seemed sur-real with so many law en-forcement officers with hun-dreds of plastic handcuffs at the ready. Luckly we saw no trouble as the sea of Oc-cupy the Rose participants marched to City Hall for the Rally.

Organizer Pete Thot-tam estimated the crowd of protesters at 5,000 but other

local estimates lowered that figure.

"Banks got bailed out, we got sold out" was heard as the Occupy the Rose Pa-rade demonstrators retraced about 1.5 miles of the 5.5-mile parade route before veering off for the rally near City Hall.

Carrying a 250-foot long banner that said "We the People" indeed sent a loud messgage along with a 70-foot octopus made from recycled plastic bags that represented the tentacles of perceived corporate greed. All this and a man on a bi-cycle wearing a TV on his head.

The organizers were re-ally pleased with the turnout and Pete Thottam told the throngs of protesters “This isn’t the end…this is just the beginning...” as he thanked everyone for keeping the protest, peaceful safe and so succesful.

While many said the Occupy movement had no business being involved with the family Rose Parade, it is important to point out that some corporate floats in-cluded insurance companies which were bailed out by the federal government.

High Five - A Los Angeles Sheriff’s Deputy Winningham gets a high-five from a young admirer at the end of the parade. Occupy the Rose Parade led a successful protest against the corporate America and it’s banking sustem with 4000 strong voicing their opinions along part of the Parade route on Monday. The movement ended up with a rally at City Hall. -Photos by Terry Miller
