    Kuta Weekly News Corner4 Apr - 10 Apr 2013 (330)

Gday again folks and welcome to the next editi on. Its been a busy week on the island for

all and sundry with the Galu ngan celebrations and the Easter break we all look forward

to every year coming and going. It's a great time of year for a tourist to come to the

island as the locals usually decorate the streets and the front of their homes and

businesses with long pieces of decorated bamboo, sometimes up to 45 feet tall,

signifying the Galingan celebrations. It feels like we only just got over the Nyepi period

(the day of silence) and here we are seeing the passing of the next ceremony and now

we only have to get through Saturdays Kunningan festivitys and its back to business as

usual till the school holidays in June. A very busy time indeed. The week just passed sawthe local lad Gede Bagus get through to another round of Indonesias X-Factor, so I hope all our followers get on their phones and

start texting their votes for him. Go Gede (TEXT Ged e to 9288)

The last two weeks saw the first round of the A.F.L season which was a split round and boy oh boy I don't think to many

people put on a very good tip score for that round. There where some absolute upsets which I don't think any seasoned punter saw

coming. I had the chance to catch, what I would say was the match of the round, being Carlton V Richmond, with old mate Squirtell

and applaud the tigers on th e very lucky and close win they took home, however unfortunate, that that most of us ti pped the Blues.

Old mate Squirt said that anyone who knows anything about football would have only gotten 2-3 correct tips this round and I tend to

agree. The season will develop into a compl etely different set of top eight teams Id say. At no time was there ever any doubt that the

Mighty Pies would take a loss. Karn The Pies.

Moving along, but, looking back at last weeks editorial, where I crapped on about several things including politcics and

asked anyone who thought differently about the Gillard team to send me an email with their view on the state of the current

leadership party and their direction or lack of for inclusuon to the paper, and what can I say ? It seems that for many of the citizen of

Australia the current leadership is terribly disliked, with the general view being, they will not be re-elected on election day later this

year. Im surprised at the distinct and concise passion that some readers expressed in the form of emails, with one punter who

obviously lives here, taking the ti me to drop a letter into our office in Kuta to l et us know just how upset he was at the way the country

has been run. Unfortunatley I am unable to publish too much that was sent in, as for the best part of the feedback there was way to

much profanity and simply put, uneducated opinion on the way things sh ould be run. Im seriously surprised as to th e extent of the ill

feeling the citizens of our great nation felt towards the current leadership team.

Now, by no means is this a political newspaper, nor will it ever be, but, for the life of me I just don't understand why the

Labour party has lost so much ground in the ratings and polls ? The way I see it is that the Aussie dollar is fairly well one of the

strongest in the world with many people from all different countries wanting to i nvest in business with us for that purpose. We have

arguably one of the best health care systems in t he world that takes care of you whether you have a few quid in the bank or n ot, and

the standard of living in the country i s probably the highest of many countrys around the wo rld. I have a friend who will attest to th e

fact that the health system alone is one of the best, as after he was diagnosted with a heart condition, he was fast tracked for

treatment and will live many more years because of this . The fact that the pinnacle of his existance isnt what the doctor adviced has

no bearing on things but at the e nd of the day the country that he used to call home picked up the b ill without issue.

We are one of the only countries in the world that has a semi decent interest rate for those of us that have managed to save some

money and keep it in the bank, as if you had any money in banks in some oth er parts of the world, you would be actually charged with

what they descibe as negative interest. Fancy that hey, it would actually cost you to keep money in the bank. Take a look at Cypress

last week, if you where a citizen or expat it looked like you would lose up to 40% of your saving to help bail out the banks. I don't

believe that sort of thing will ever happen in Australia, and lucky for them it didn't happen as they found another way to try and crawl

    out of debt.

Ok you can say that there are many things that are done wrong and should change, but do you just decree a change over

night when you are running a country ? or does this change take several years to implament ? Do you think that these people, that

make a life decision to get into politics are doing what ever they can to upset thecountries citizens ? I don't thin k so, and I m sure that lots o f people have many different

views, but for me, at the end of the day, Australia is probably the best country in the

world and no matter who is in charge, people are going to complain. I think we should

all concentrate on making the country as strong as we can and sell as much as we can to

the rest of the world further enhancing ou r standing on the world stage.

Ok folks that about the most I have room to spit out for now and do hope the most of

you stay safe, happy, healthy and always remmeber, nothing in the world is more

dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.

    Enjoy You Week,

    ALIASJ..

JIMBARANJ imbaran is just south of the airport and Kuta. This

was formerly a real backwater of south Bali, just a tinyfishing village with a daily market. That all started tochange in the 1980s and J imbaran is now home to severalworld class 5 star beach resorts, plus a few moremoderate mid-market hotels.

There is however little in the way of budget

accommodation and there are also many high-end villas inthis area, particularly on the ridges of high ground above

J imbaran Bay. This has resulted in monikers such as the"Beverly Hills of Bali" or "Millionaire's Row".

The bay itself has a pleasant white sand beachand is very safe for swimming. The three clusters of grilledseafood restaurants on the beach are a major tourist drawin the evenings, as is the truly stunning sunset.

J imbaran is also home to a Norwegian University,Gateway College, with around 500 students studyingathletics, philosphy, culture, economics and journalism.

The school is located in Kedonganan close to Sari SegaraResort and in J l, Bantas Kau where it also has a small cafe.

J imbaran has an increasing number of rather chicshops but there is little or no nightlife here. It has theadvantage of being a little closer to Kuta and Seminyakand the cultural highlights of Central Bali.

    BALI, LOCATION TO SUIT EVERYONE

    THE BUKIT

Much has been written about this dusty, aridand rugged area, which forms the southernmost tip of the island.

Limestone cliffs of up to 100 meters in

height provide some of the best views in theworld, along with some deserted white sandybeaches.

Everyone wants a piece of this are, frominternational hotel chains such as Bvlgari,Versace and Banyan Tree, to establishedresidential villa developers looking for thatperfect plot. The area offers secluded beaches, and exclusivity to name but a few reasons whythis is fast becoming the place to be.

Prices have more than tripled in thearea over last 2 years alone with still plenty ofpotential to be realized, so now is a plan. Only ashort 15 minutes drive fromthe international airport, The Bukit is fast beingreferred to as the new Millionaires Row.

Electricity charges inIndonesia will rise an average4.3%, effective April 1, 2013. The

The vice-chairman ofthe Indonesian Hotel andRestaurant Association(PHRI-RI), J ohnnie Sugiarto, told detikfinance that theincrease electrical tariff wasputting hotel operators underpressure. He described how thehigher power charges come at atime when many hotels are

Sugiarto warns that in orderto address these business

Bali is part of th e Indonesian archipelago of 18,700 islandsand lies approximately 8C south of the equator.

The majority of the population of Bali are (Balinese)Hindu, a unique mixture of Hinduism & Buddhism. The uniquereligion and culture of the Balinese people is one of the reasonsthe island remained an oasis of peace and calm throughout thechaotic times in Indonesia since the fall of the Suhartodictatorship in 1999 and has helped sustain the spirit of theisland during the last few years as Bali and the Balinese peoplehave suffered their own turbulent times of unbelievable sorrowand the resulting economic hardships.

Bali is blessed by nature with a short, hot wet seasonand a longer, cooler, dry season and touristsflock here all year round. Many tourists chooseto arrive in the dry season - which nowadaysappears to cover a longer period from April tolate November. The busiest period is during the

holiday season of August, which is also thecoolest month on this Island of the Gods.

Contrary to popular belief, Bali'swaves were being surfed by both visiting andlocal surfers as early as the late 1930s and not,as popular surfing legend has it, that the islandof Bali was first discovered as a great surfingdestination by a group of Australian surfers.Although, when these first Australian surfers began arriving onthe island of Bali in 1967 they introduced the island to the firstserious surfing equipment. While Bali may no longer be a "frontier" surf destination, it stilllies at the heart of the Indonesian surfing experience and is amandatory stopover for anyone on their first surfing trip toIndonesia. Bali is also the first and last stop for most of thesurfers traveling on to some of the legendary breaks in G-Land,Lombok or Sumbawa, or the more distant areas of East Nusa

    Tenggara, Mentawais and North Sumatra.

Bali has traditionally been the starting point for nearlyall Indonesian surfing tours. Bali boasts over 20 top qualitybreaks on the southwest and southeast coasts of the island andaround the Bukit (Uluwatu) P eninsula. Some of these, l ikePadang Padang & Uluwatu, are world class barreling reef-

breaks. Others range from fun waves on the beach-breaksaround Kuta and Sanur to serious heavy, sucking waves.

Having so many surf options available within such ashort distance to the Kuta and Legian beach area means thatafter your surf you can return to a plush hotel and enjoy a long, lazy meal, lounge by the pool, take a nap in an air conditionedroom and watch satellite TV. Alternatively you can party at thediscos each night, enjoy some of the local brew, all of which hasdefinite appeal after spending one or two weeks on a surf charterboat, or in a very basic surf camp on Java or Sumatra. The peakof the surf season for Bali is April - October when solid swells areproduced by the roaring 40's and can be surfed on the reefsaround Kuta, Uluwatu, and Nusa Dua. Unlike most other areas

of Indonesia where it is all heavy reefbreaks, Bali also has a lot of beach-breakson offer which are less likely to cause asurfer of novice or intermediate ability to

get injured as can happen on the largerwaves on the reef-breaks.

The surf in Bali is generally nothuge, but most often in the 2-6 foot range(shoulder-high to double overhead).Larger waves can occur on some of theexposed reefs, but a mellower surf breakcan always be found in Bali by anyone who

wishes to avoid life-threatening conditions. Bali has surf breaksboth the west-facing and east-facing coastlines and, because ofthis an offshore wind can be found somewhere on the island onany given day. Because of the number of surf breaks and thequality and consistency of the waves in Bali, it is still possible tofind a many places to surf with only a small to moderate crowd.

The surf is always up on the Island of the God's! and regardlessof what country you hail from you will feel the mystique of surfingBali's beaches .. .with so many exotic locations available on theisland you can choose from white sands, black sands, amazingscenery, traditional fisherman and fishing villages which all addto the unique experience that comes with Surfing Bali.

A Rhode Island ci ty hasdropped its case againsta woman who was fined$15 for violating a noise

    ordinance after her petc o c k a t o o a l l e g e d l yswore at her ex-h u s b a n d ' sg i r l f r i end , w holived with him nextdoor , a lawyer said.

Warwick MunicipalCourt fined Lynne Taylorin September following aseries of complaints fromthe neighbour over noisefrom the parrot and otheroffenses, said Taylor's

    lawyer, Stephen Peltier.The bird allegedly

used salty language torefer to the neighbour, but Peltier said the birdwas merely saying"knock it off," and that the noiseordinance was unconstitutional

because it was highlysubjective and intended forcases of dog-barking.

Taylor's former husbandhad given her the bird before

they divorced and he moved intoa neighbouring house, Peltier

said. His girlfriend begancomplaining to police after shemoved into the house and the

dispute escalated over aperiod of months in 2011, theattorney added.

Tay lo r appeal ed thedecision, and the City of Warwick

dropped the case, he said."We were prepared to fightthis right on through theSupreme Court, andWarwick decided theywere not going to fightit," Peltier said.

Police said it wasin the best interest of

justice to drop the caseinstead of using cityresources to enforcethe fine. A Warwickpolice officer involvedin the case was notavailable for comment.

    The ordinance

says any dog, animal orfowl that habituallybarks, howls or makesnoise and disturbs aneighbour may bedeemed a public

    nuisance, according to Peltier.

Dear Martha,Last year, Wayan & I decided we'd be bonkBuddies, it worked well for us for about 10 months,no strings, no attachment, just lots of fun. Wayan(apparently) met a gir l and they started dating whichmeant our arrangement was over. I was fine & happyfor him.

Fast forward 5 months and his gf has gone o/s for 3months and before she was even on the plane hecalled me up for a booty call. I refused, telling him Ido NOT sleep with guys who have gf's. He repliedhow do you know we haven't agreed to be single for3 months?

It just doesn't sit r ight with me. I've known him formany years & he's always been honest & faithful togfs and now there's a complete change in him - he'sok to sleep with someone even though he's in arelationship with someone else. That's defini tely notthe guy I used to know.I'm not going to be his booty call but I am worriedabout this sudden change in his morals. I know hedrinks alcohol daily and I'm wondering if this isstarting to affect him. But on the other hand, he'll beturning 30 this year so maybe he's having some typeof 1/3 life crisis.

It's very confusing & I 'm just not sure what to thinkor to say to him. Can you give me any insight

Dear Caterina,You think he has a disease because he wants to cheaton his girlfriend? You may think you knew this guy butin all likelihood you only knew himas well as he letyou. Blokes don't usually confide how much they likecheating to their girl friends or even their bonkbuddies dear.

You have no idea what's going on in the relationshipwith his girl. Maybe he's half way out of it already, bored, unhappy or maybe he's just a dirty dog. Youdidn't know it when he was first trying to get in yourpants, because he was trying to get in your pants.

If I could answer a question with a question, why do youcare so much about his moral behaviour anyway?

"Kiss From A Rose"There used to be a graying tower alone on the sea.

You became the light on the dark side of me.Love remained a drug that's the high and not the pill.

But did you know,That when it snows,

My eyes become large andThe light that you shine can be seen.

Baby,I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the gray.

Ooh,The more I get of you,

The stranger it feels, yeah. And now that your rose is in bloom.A light hits the gloom on the gray.

There is so much a man can tell you,So much he can say.

You remain,My power, my pleasure, my pain, baby

To me you're like a growing addiction that I can't deny.

Won't you tell me is that healthy, baby? But did you know,That when it snows,

Collingwood's Scott Pendlebury admits theMagpies will not be able to escape the hypesurrounding next Sunday's clash with theirformer coach Mick Malthouse.

Malthouse will lead Carlton for the first time against

the club he guided to the 2010 premiership and left a yearlater amid acrimonious circumstances.

He was due to step into the newly created director ofcoaching role at the Magpies following the 2011 seasonbut instead chose to walk away from the club and take upa position in the broadcast media.

Matlhouse's exit did not impress Magpies presidentEddie McGuire and he further earned the ire of the Blackand White faithful by joining the Blues as head coachahead of this season.

Pendlebury, speaking after the Magpies' 16-pointwin over North Melbourne on Sunday, says it will bebusiness as usual heading into the Blues encounter.

But he concedes the interest in the club's firstmeeting with the Blues under Malthouse will dominate theheadlines this week.

"We always love playing Carlton and I'm sure all

week we will hear about it and hopefully we get a massivecrowd, because it will be a massive game," Pendleburytold Grandstand.

The Magpies will take much confidence into theBlues encounter, considering they posted the win over theKangaroos at Docklands with a depleted roster.

They were already missing Dale Thomas and LukeBall, when Dayne Beams (thigh) and Heath Shaw (illness)were late matchday withdrawals.

It meant two more debutants - J osh Thomas andJ ack Frost - joined another, Sam Dwyer, in the Magpies'squad of 22.

Pendlebury says the Magpies could take great pride

from the performance in beating theKangaroos.

"It's one of the better wins I've played inover my short career so far," he said.

"The effort of everybody out there, everyone gave that 10 out of 10 effort and that'sall you can ask for.

"It's great to start on that note and now wecan build next week for Carlton."

The Magpies were also forced to copewith the loss of Ben J ohnson to a leg injuryduring the second term and key defender BenReid to a head clash in the third.

Skipper Gidley missedlast week's impressive victoryover North Queensland with acalf injury and although hereturned to face the Raiders, itwas at hooker, before beingforced out of the game withconcussion at half-time.

Trailing 12-10 at thebreak after squandering a 10-0lead, Roberts restored theKnights' advantage 11 minutesafter the restart, with anoutrageous right-foot step thatfooled the Raiders defence, thenran through the subsequent gap toscore.

It was almost a carbon copy

of the his try against theCowboys last Monday and on thisevidence Gidley may have to getused to sharing hooking duties withDanny Buderus this season.

The Knights opened thescoring on the quarter-hour markthrough Akuila Uate who hauled ina delicious kick from J arrod Mullenthat curled over the head of JackWighton and into the arms of theNSW winger.

Anthony Quinn's first four-pointer on his return toNewcastle from Melbourne wokeup the Raiders, who scored twounanswered tries to take the

    lead.But back-rower Adam

    Cuthbertson iced the result

for the hosts just after thehour-mark when hebulldozed his way to theline and scored his first trysince the 2011 semi-finalfor St George Illawarraagainst Brisbane.

The former Manlyand Cronulla man thenadded his second justbefore the siren to seal a

Titans take down PanthersGold Coast maintained itsstrong start to the season asPenrith's inability to find thefinishing touch c ame back tohaunt them in a 28-10 loss t othe Titans at PanthersStadium.

The Titans rolled to theirthird win from four starts in 2013 asthey held off a fast-finishingPanthers, who paid the price forseveral botched try-scoringopportunities early in the game.

"It was a different type of winto the ones we've had in the lastcouple of weeks [and you've] got toknow how to win all sorts of ways,"J ohn Cartwright told Grandstand.

"Defensively we were ableto hang in there and find ways tostop them from scoring."

On one such occasion GregBird stripped the ball from LukeWalsh as he was falling over the

line, the New South Wales Originback rower later scoring from a

penalty tap 10 metres out tocap a powerful game.

The Panthers now have justone win from four starts ahead of adaunting trip to Townsville to faceNorth Queensland, while theTitans warmed-up for an epichome game against big brother

    Brisbane.After David Mead gave his

side an early 6-0 lead, Walshlooked like he had replied beforeBird's intervention, while twominutes later Brad Tighe spilled theball over the line as he attempted to

    pick up a rolling ball.

Bird doubled the visitors'advantage when the Panthersdefence fell asleep, the Panthershitting back three minutes after therestart when David Simmonscleverly tapped back a Walsh kickfor Wes Naiqama to stroll over.

Another Bird try-savedislodged the ball from Naiqama, and the Titans' fears that thePanthers were coming seemed toget the better of them when veteranprop Luke Bailey appeared to grabthe shirt of referee J ason Robinsonas he argued for a penalty.

A Steve Michaels four-pointer had the Titans firmly incontrol at 18-4 before Tom Humbleset up an intriguing finish when heshowed surprising pace to outrunboth Mead and Kevin Gordon for a70-metre intercept try.

There was no catchingGordon however as he iced thegame with two tries in the final five

minutes as the Titans consolidatedtheir spot in the NRL top four.

Inu accepts five-match banCanterbury's Krisnan Inuwill serve a f ive-matchsuspension after enteringan early guilty plea for hisspear tackle on Greg Inglis.

Inu chose not to challengethe grade four dangerous throwcharge that he was handedfollowing his tackle on Inglis in the68th minute of South Sydney's17-12 win at the Olympicstadium.

T he N e w Ze a l a ndinternational lifted Inglis verticallyand plunged his head into theturf, an ugly tackle from which theRabbitohs full-back managed towalk away.

Inu was facing a seven-week ban had he contested thecharge at the judiciary andproved unsuccessful.

    Bulldogs coach Des Hasler

says the club consideredtrying to have the chargedowngraded at the judiciary butdecided against such action.

"We did look at comparables, and we were looking at maybe agrade three," he said.

"But we couldn't find anythingthat was a grade three so it wasprobably best that we took the fivematches."

    Hasler admits running the risk

of a seven-week ban wastoo much of a gamble given thereaction to the tackle.

"This early in the season weprobably risked running into theback of public emotion and[seven] weeks was probably a bitrisky," he said.

"Krisnan didn't mean to doit. He's not that kind of player. He'sheld in fairly high regard.

"It was a tackle that went

wrong. It was fairly black andwhite. It was a bit careless and abit reckless and that is the way itgoes.

"I think that maybe a monthwould have been right ... but I canunderstand why they gave it five(weeks)."

Tim Lafai will play at centrein place of Inu against Manly onFriday at the Olympic stadium.
