UC Davis at San Jose State • Sept. 8, 2012 • Game 2

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. SAN JOSE STATE• The Spartans and Aggies are tied 4-4-2 in their series which

first kicked off during the Harding Administration in 1922. • UC Davis didn’t allow a point to San Jose State over the

first four games, outscoring the Spartans 74-0, but also being held without a point during a scoreless tie in 1930.

• The teams stopped the series in 1934 after seven games, resuming in 2007 when SJSU posted a 34-14 win.

• Despite their difference in classification (FBS, FCS), only four points have separated the teams in their past two games... The Spartans needed a last-second touchdown to win 13-10 in 2009 while the Aggies rallied from 13-0 at halftime to win 14-13 in 2010.

• RB NICK APRILE and WR TOM HEMMINGSEN scored TD’s in the third quarter of the latter matchup - QB RANDY WRIGHT hit Hemmingsen from four yards - to help key that win.

• UC Davis rushed for just 37 yards in that game but Wright threw for 223 yards... WR ANTHONY SOTO had four catches for 58 yards.

HEAD COACHES• BOB BIGGS (UC Davis ‘73) is in his 20th season at the

helm of the Aggies and his 35th with the program overall.• He owns a 141-78-1 (.643) overall record and is 64-53-0

(.547) against NCAA Div. I (FBS, FCS) teams... Biggs is also 39-31-1 (.557) in the month of September and is 62-51-0 (.549) on the road.

• Biggs is the second-winningest coach in the history of the UC Davis program, trailing only Jim Sochor whose 156-41-5 record between 1970-88 led to his enshrinement into the Col-lege Football Hall of Fame.

• Four of Biggs’ QB’s have gone on to play professional foot-ball, including QB J.T. O’SULLIVAN (1998-2001) and former San Jose SaberCats (AFL) starter MARK GRIEB (1994-96)... Others include KHARI JONES (1991-93) who had a standout career in the Canadian Football League and KEVIN DAFT (1995-98) who was a reserve on the Tennessee Titans when they went to the Super Bowl XXXIV... Daft is now an assistant coach at with the Aggies.

• MIKE MacINTYRE (Georgia Tech ‘89) is 6-20 and in his third year at San Jose State... His mark with the Spartans is also his career mark as a head coach.

• He brings NFL experience with the New York Jets (2007) and Dallas Cowboys (2003-06), as well as collegiate experi-ence at Duke, Ole Miss, Georgia, Davidson, Tennessee-Martin and Temple.

• MacIntyre played collegiately for former Yellow Jackets coach BOBBY ROSS as a free safety and punt returner after beginning his college career with two seasons at Vanderbilt.

BRIEF SAN JOSE STATE SCOUTING REPORT• The Spartans enter the week after a heartbreaking 20-17

loss at Stanford last Friday, a game which they trailed 14-0 in the first quarter and 17-3 at halftime before rallying to tie it up with a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter... A short field goal by the Cardinal early in the fourth proved to be the game-winner.

• San Jose State outgained Stanford (288-280) with most of that coming through the air where it held a 216-125 ad-vantage.

• The Spartans averaged just 2.7 yards on 27 rushing attempts, picking up 32 yards in six carries from RB BLAKE JURICH and 30 yards on 11 attempts from RB DE’LEON ES-KRIDGE.

• QB DAVID FALES was busy throwing the ball, completing 24 of 35 passes for 216 yards and a TD, but was sacked three

times and picked off once.• WR NOEL GRIGSBY led the receiving corps with seven grabs

for 92 yards and a 21-yard TD reception. • Defensively, LB KEITH SMITH had a game-high 13 tackles,

including six solo, while LB VINCE BUHAGIAR, LB DEREK MUAAVA and LB TRAVIS JOHNSON each had eight total tackles.

• CB DAMON OGBURN, JR. had a nice night with seven tackles and two forced fumbles... P HARRISON WAID was also impressive, averaging 43.5 yards on six punts with a long of 49.

• The Spartans were picked to finish third by both the media and coaches in the respective Western Athletic Conference pre-season polls.

NEWS AND NOTES FROM AZUSA PACIFIC GAME• UC Davis scored on a 67-yard scoring drive to start the game,

the first time its opened a season with a TD since doing so against New Hampshire in 2005.

• The Aggies rushed for 176 yards, just the second time since the start of last season that it surpassed 150 rushing yards and the fifth time since then it’s been in triple-digits... Seven different running backs had carries in the game.

• WR ANTHONY SOTO’s 48-yard punt return was the program’s longest since WR JESSE OLIVA went 85 yards at Weber State on 9/18/04.

• Eleven different players caught passes, none of them grabbing more than three.

• UC Davis scored on five of its first six drives (3 TD’s, 2 FG) with all but one of the scoring drives consuming less than three minutes.

• The Aggies had an average starting position in the first half of their own 49-yard line... Conversely, Azusa Pacific started an average of its own 21 for the entire game.

• UC Davis didn’t yield a sack for the first time since beating Cal Poly 23-10 on 11/9/2009.

KASPAR VS. KASPAR IN THE TRENCHES• Aggie DT ANTHONY KASPAR and his brother G NICHOLAS KAS-

PAR of San Jose State will have the unique opportunity of going head-to-head during Saturday’s game.

• It’s the first time they’ve ever faced each other in a competi-tive game although, Anthony said, their parents were accustomed to breaking up one-on-one basketball games in the front yard that got a little too physical.

• Both played for Dana Hills HS in Southern California.• Their parents have made t-shirts that say “SPAGGIES” - a com-

bination of “Spartans” and “Aggies”.

SCHMIDT ELEVATES PUNTING GAME• The year before P COLTON SCHMIDT arrived at UC Davis, the

Aggies struggled mightily in the punting department, averaging just 33.4 yards per kick and have five of them blocked.

• Since then, Schmidt has moved among the elite ranks of all-time punters at UC Davis... He’s averaged 40.1 yards per kick over his first three years, including a school-record 42.3 yards last season.

• His true freshman year was just as impressive when he aver-aged 39.1 yards.

• Schmidt entered the year having pinned 56 kicks inside the 20, last year had 13 punts go at least 50 yards, booted a 67-yarder as a freshman and a year later set a school record with a 78-yard punt at North Dakota.

• The school record for career average is well within reach... It’s held by CHRIS SHIBEL (40.72 from 2001-04).

• He’s off to a good start this season, averaging 46.3 yards on three punts against Azusa Pacific, booting a long of 56 yards, and putting all three inside the 20.

• Eastern Washington won the 2010 NCAA Div. I FCS title in 2010 and Montana has been a longtime force in the division.

• The Aggies, however, will also face an FBS team (San Jose State) for the seventh straight year... They’re facing the Spartans for the fourth time in that span and are 1-2 in their previous matchups.

• Altogther, UC Davis is 2-7 (.222) versus FBS competition since 2005 with the other win besides San Jose State coming at Stanford in 2005 (20-17)... Other FBS foes included Boise State (2009), Fresno State (2009), Hawai’i (2011), Arizona State (2011) and TCU (2006).

GAME 1UC DAVIS 41, Azusa Pacific 3August 30, 2012Aggie Stadium (Davis, Calif.) - Attendance: 5,903

Running back Marquis Nicolis rushed for 79 yards, fullback Dalton Turay scored two touchdowns and the Aggie defense held Azusa Pacific to just 218 total yards, as the UC Davis football team rolled to a 41-3 nonconference football season-opening win at Aggie Stadium on Thursday night.

The victory gave Bob Biggs - who announced late last year that the 2012 season would be his last - his 141st career win.

Turay, playing his first Aggie game, carried the ball just five times for 14 yards but scored from two yards early in the game to help stake UC Davis to an early 7-0 lead, and then added a one-yard plunge in the third that made it 34-3.

Nicolis had 11 carries for his 79 yards, averaging 7.2 yards and breaking off a long of 14 yards. Quar-terback Randy Wright completed 13 of 19 yards for 166 yards and a touchdown.

The Aggie defense, meanwhile, stifled Azusa Pacific for most of the night, allowing just 75 total yards in the first half including just 28 on the ground. More than half the Cougars’ yards in the game came from running back Terrell Watson who gained 144 yards on 17 carries.

Azusa Pacific, playing its first season at the NCAA Division II level, netted 111 yards on the ground and just 107 in the air.

A lot of the offense’s success can be attributed to a swarming defense which forced three-and-outs on Azusa Pacific’s first four drives while holding the Cougars to no yards. UC Davis forced eight punts in the game and only two drives longer than 40 yards.

Khalid Jones and Kyle Skierski each had five tackles for UC Davis with Jones posting a pair of TFL’s. Aaryn Jones had an interception. The defense combined for 9.0 TFL’s with eight different players getting a share of that totoal. Jones and Kyle DeVaughn had sacks.

BOB BIGGS Head Coach20th year as head coach35th year overall

Ask anyone close to the UC Davis football program about its head coach and you’ll tend to get the same response: “Not your typical football coach.”

The compliment fits Bob Biggs. Despite running a program that played at the highest levels nationally at the NCAA Division II level and one that is quickly rising among the ranks of the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), Biggs has remained an accessible and engaging leader of the Aggies.

Biggs’ stamp on the football program at UC Davis is one of success, intensity and intelligence that carried his teams to eight playoff appearances and an average of nine wins per year during his first decade.

Now embarking on his 20th and final year as the head coach for the Aggies, Biggs will cap a 35-year career on the coaching staff by leading UC Davis into its inaugural season in the Big Sky Conference in 2012. Following wins over rivals Cal Poly and Sacramento State in 2011, Biggs hopes to improve on a stellar 15-4 career mark in Causeway Classic games.

The second-winningest football coach in UC Davis history, Biggs trails only his mentor, Jim Sochor, on the all-time coaching victories list. His first win in the 1999 season was his 50th, making him one of the quickest coaches to reach that plateau in the nation regardless of division. With a win over former Great West Conference rival Northern Colorado in 2004, Biggs hit his 100th career win in just his 12th year. He is 140-78-1.

In 2010, he led UC Davis to its second consecutive winning season with a 6-5 record. The Aggies defeated an FBS opponent with a 14-13 win at San Jose State. It was the first time since defeating Stanford in 2005 that UC Davis downed a Bowl Subdivision member. The Aggies also finished the season on a high note with three consecutive victories. After road wins at North Dakota and No. 19 Cal Poly, UC Davis capped off the season with a 17-16 win over Sacramento State at home.

In 2009, he helped lead the Aggies to the Great West Conference championship for the second time since 2005. The Aggies also delivered their 38th winning season in their past 40.

In 1993 and 2000, he was named American Football Coaches Association’s Region 5 College Division Coach of the Year. In 2002, he won Coach of the Year honors for the inaugural Independent Football Alliance.

Biggs, previously the quarterbacks coach, has seen four of his protégés enter the professional ranks. Khari Jones (1991-93) earned Canadian Football League MVP honors in 2001, Mark Grieb (1994-96) earned Arena Bowl MVP for the San Jose Sabercats in 2007, and Kevin Daft (1996-98) was a fifth-round draft choice of the Tennessee Titans in 1999.

Most recently, J.T. O’Sullivan (1999-2001) was selected in the sixth round by the New Orleans Saints in 2002 and was chosen as Co-Offensive MVP of NFL Europe in 2007. He is currently on the Oakland Raiders roster.

Under his guidance, the Aggies consistently ranked among the top Division II teams in the nation in total offense. In 2000, UC Davis averaged almost 520 yards per game, ranking among the national leaders during the regular season.

Biggs had similar success as a UC Davis quarterback. His legend was sealed in 1971 when he was the quarterback for the Aggies’ “Miracle Win” over Cal State Hayward. In that game, he directed a comeback that featured 16 points in the final 20 seconds and resulted in a 30-29 victory. That win paved the way for the first of UC Davis’ national-record 20 straight league titles.

During his senior year in 1972, Biggs averaged 272.8 yards per game in total offense and was the leading passer in the nation at Division II (then known as the College Division). That year, he also became the Aggies’ first 2,000-yard passer, while setting the school record for attempts with 387, a mark that stayed intact for 21 years. He had four 300-yard passing games that fall, including a 399-yard day at San Francisco State.

In his final game as a collegian, Biggs led UC Davis to Atlantic City, N.J., for the NCAA’s Boardwalk Bowl and a clash with Massachusetts. Playing the entire game with a broken finger, he set two national records in the Aggies’ 35-14 loss. His record 59 passes that day established a Division II postseason record.

Biggs, a member of the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame, was an Associated Press Little All-American that season. He graduated in 1973 with a double major in political science and history.

Biggs played professionally with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League and the Portland Storm of the World Football League. He also spent time in the training camp of the NFL’s Denver Broncos.

Biggs came back to his alma mater to join the coaching staff in 1978. He became the offensive coordina-tor in 1987 and was the assistant head coach in 1991 and 1992 before taking the head coaching position in 1993. In his first year as head football coach, the Aggies went 10-2, were co-champions of the American West Conference and reached the second round of the NCAA Playoffs for the first time in 10 years. He was also named AFCA Region Coach of the Year.

Biggs also served as head men’s tennis coach from 1979 through 1988. In that span, he guided the Aggies to five NCAA Championships appearances, including a third-place finish in 1986.
