The Car and Route 66The Car and Route 66

• Before we can talk about Route 66, we need to look at the automobile.

• IT LITERALLY CHANGED THE LANDSCAPE OF AMERICA.

• The car liberated isolated families in rural areas. Now, they could drive to the city, shop and seek entertainment.

• The car allowed both women and young people to become more independent through increased mobility.

• Indeed, the car was the first truly private place where men and women could meet…..

• The car also allowed workers the opportunity to live miles from their jobs—often more cheaply than if they had lived closer to those jobs.

• Of course, all of this creates what we call “urban sprawl”.

• The car industry would provide an economic base for towns like Akron and Detroit, Flint and Pontiac.

• The auto industry symbolized “the success of the free enterprise system and the Coolidge era”.

• By the late 1920s, around 80% of all registered automobiles in the world were in the United States—about 1 car per 5 people.

Route 66 gets its start in 1857 when a Lieutenant Ed Beale—an officer in the U.S. Army Corps-- was ordered by the War Department to build a government-funded wagon road across the 35th parallel.

It would become a part of 66.

• Route 66 ends up being decommissioned yet no single road was designated to replace it. Although it was no longer possible to drive Route 66 uninterrupted all the way from Chicago to Los Angeles, more than 80% of the original road and alternate alignments are still drivable with careful planning.
