A. Country of Internet Usage Experience
Most have experienced Internet in Korea
Out of the foreign residents who have Internet experience (aged 12 to 59), 99.9% haveexperience using the Internet in Korea and 76.1% have experience using it in their
native country or elsewhere.
- 76.0% have experience using the Internet both in and outside Korea, while 23.9%
have experienced Internet usage only in Korea.
While the Internet usage experience in Korea for all North America, Europe, Asia and
Other are very high at over 99%, the Internet usage experience in their native country
or elsewhere in Asia (74.6%) are relatively lower than other nationality groups.

B. Country of First Internet Usage Experience
30.8% have their first experiences of using Internet in Korea
69.2% of foreign residents have used the Internet for the first time in 'Native country
or elsewhere' (native country 68.0%, elsewhere 1.2%), while 30.8% first experienced
Internet usage in Korea.
Among the respondents who said they first experienced using the Internet in Korea,
those who come from Asia (32.6%) are relatively higher than other nationality groups.Of those who first used the Internet in their native countries or elsewhere, those who
come from Europe ranked the highest at 94.3%.

2. Internet Usage Environment
A. The Rate of Residences with Computers
92.5% have computers at residences
Out of the foreign residents in Korea who have experience using the internet (aged 12
to 59), 92.5% have computer(s) at their residences. By nationality group, those who
come from Europe ranked the highest at 97.5%.
By gender, the rate of residence with computer is relatively higher for male (93.2%)
than female (91.5%).
Over 96% of foreign residents under 20 have computer(s) at their residence.

B. The Rate of Residences with Internet Access
90.9% can access Internet in their residences
Of all the foreign residents in Korea who have experience using the Internet, 90.9% (up
by 0.8%p from 2010) have Internet access at their residence. By nationality group,
those who come from Europe make up relatively higher rate at 98.0%.
Foreign residents who live with Korean families, friends, or co-workers who higher
Internet access rates (94.8%) by 4.9%p compared to the rate of those who do not livewith Koreans (89.9%).
By duration of stay, Internet access rates of those who have lived more than 10 years
in Korea is the highest at 96.0%, and for those who have lived less than one year is
relatively lower at 87.3%.

Among the foreign residents who have experience using the Internet (aged 12 to 59)
in Korea, 96.8% are 'Internet users in Korea' and have used the Internet in Korea

The rate of 'Internet users in Korea' is not significantly different by nationality group.
Those who come from North America show 100.0%, 98.9% for Europe and other

A. Internet Usage Frequency and Hours
Average 18.8 hours per a week is spent on using Internet
92.6% internet users in Korea use the Internet at least once or more per week, while
those who use the Internet 'At least once a day' are at 69.4%.
On weekly average, Internet users in Korea tend to spend 18.5 hours of Internet usagein Korea. Those who spend more than 10 hours per week account for over half of the
total (58.3%) ('10-16 hours' 17.6%, 'More than 16 hours' 40.7%).

The main place of using Internet is 'Home, residence'
The main place where Internet users in Korea access the Internet is 'Home,
residence'(84.3%), and 'Workplace, related organization' (19.2%), 'School' (17.6%) and
'Commercial facilities (PC cafes, Internet cafes, etc)' (15.8%) are relatively low.

C. Purpose of Using the Internet
The main purposes for Internet usage is 'Acquiring data or information'
(85.1%) and 'Communicating' (77.3%)
Internet users in Korea access the Internet mainly for 'Acquiring data and information
(including news search)' (85.1%) or 'Communication (email, online chat, internet, phone,
etc)' (77.3%).
In addition, the rate of respondents who use the Internet for 'Leisure activities (music,
game, movie, etc)' is over half (58.7%), followed by 'Education/learning'(31.0%), 'Internet
shopping(purchasing product or service' (25.7%).

3. Internet Utilization in Daily Life
A. Information Channel
'Internet' is the main channel to acquire information on daily life or Korea
With regards to the main methods that Internet users in Korea use to get information
on daily life in Korea (Korean culture, language, laws, employment, etc) the Internet is
ranked the highest at 82.2% and 79.1% respectively.
In addition, they also use 'Family, friends and other acquaintances' (75.5%, 72.7% each)
and 'TV' (73.1%, 68.8% each) for acquiring information on daily life and Korea.

'Internet' is the main channel for communicating with acquaintances in
native country
75.3% of Internet users in Korea tend to use the Internet ('Internet chat, Instant
messengers' 50.0%, 'E-mail' 38.8%, 'Internet phone (VoIP)' 26.2%, 'Blog/Mini homepage'
7.3%, and 'Microblog' 2.5%) for communicating with family and friends in their native
country.

4. Impressions toward Internet Usage in Korea
A. Internet Usage Convenience
Internet usage is convenient in 'Korea'
Half of Internet users in Korea (55.0%) responded that Internet usage in Korea is more
convenient than elsewhere, and 8.0% responded that Internet usage is less convenient
in Korea.
Among the reasons for Internet usage convenience in Korea, 'Fast and stable Internetconnection' is ranked the highest at 93.3%. Meanwhile, they point out the worst
inconvenience to be 'Korean-only computer screens or programs' (55.4%).

or reservation'
Out of the total Internet users in Korea, 73.2% have used Korean websites. Internet
users in Korea have used Korean websites mostly for 'Information search' (54.2%),
'Email' (33.2%), 'Listening to music' (30.2%) and 'Shopping or reservations' (28.8%).
- While Internet users in Korea tend to use foreign websites more than Korean websites,
the Korean website usage rate is higher than foreign websites for 'Shopping or

B. Subscription to Korean Websites
77.5% of those who try to subscribe Korean websites succeed
Of all Korean website users, 46.6% access Korean websites through subscription. Among
those who try to subscribe to Korean websites (60.1%), the success rate of subscribing
is 77.5%.
The reason for failing to subscribe to Korean websites is mostly due to 'Require a
Resident Registration Number despite having my Alien Registration Number' (53.9%),followed by 'Requires too much information for subscribing' (36.0%).

Registration Number
The success rate of checking identification by passport number and foreign
registration number are 48.7% and 49.3% each
The percentage of attempts to use passport numbers or alien registration numbers for
identification among users of Korean websites are at 34.1% and 46.5% respectively.
Among them, the percentage of people who always succeeded or tend to be
successful are reported as 48.7% and 49.3% respectively.

A. Experience of Using Korean Internet Shopping Malls
47.5% have experience of using Korean Internet shopping malls
47.5% of Korean website users have experience of purchasing goods or services
(including reservation, booking or contents, etc.).
- By nationality, Asian and European's Internet shopping service usage rate is the highestat 47.7% and 47.5% respectively.
'Apparels, shoes, sports equipment and accessories' are the highly purchased products
at 78.2% through Korean websites, and the next highest purchased products are
'transportation, performance, booking movie ticket' (37.6%) and 'cosmetics' (29.9%).

Korean online shopping malls, 'Quick and precise delivery of products and service'
Korean internet shopping websites were evaluated excellent in terms of 'Quick and
precise delivery of products and service' (77.9%) versus those of other nations' internet
shopping site, 'inexpensive price of products and services' (51.7%) and 'variety for
products and services' (44.6%) follow next.

A. Mobile Phone Usage Status
The rate of ordinary mobile phone usage is 66.7% and the rate for
Smartphone is 28.4%
About two third (66.7%) of mobile phone users (aged 12 to 59) are using 'Ordinary
mobile phone'. 'Smartphone' and 'Full touch phone' account for 28.4% and 7.2%
respectively.
70.0% of mobile phone users have a subscription under their own name, and the
payment method used is post-paid (75.7%).

B. Smartphone Usage Pattern
Average 18.5 hours per a week is spent on using Smartphone
The foreign Smartphone users residents in Korea (aged 12 to 59) spend a weekly
average of 18.5 hours to use the Smartphone (including usage of general phone call,
internet, application, etc.), and about half (59.9%) use it 'More than 10 hours' ('10~16
hours' 24.0%, and 'More than 16 hours' 35.9%).
The main functions that the Smartphone users use other than general phone call are'News' (48.8%), followed by 'Game/Entertainment' (45.3%), 'Communication (E-mail,
blog, messenger)' (43.3%) and 'Listening music' (40.9%).

50.4% have used wireless internet in Korea for the past one year
50.4% of device users that have access to wireless internet are the 'Wireless internet
users in Korea' that have used Wireless internet within the past one year.
Among the wireless internet users in Korea, Europe (77.2%) and North America (73.7%)
show high rate while Asia (48.6%) show relatively lower rate.

Most (91.4%) of Wireless Internet users in Korea are using the Wireless Internet at least
once or more per week, while those who use the Internet 'At least once a day' are at
70.6%.
On average, people spend 13.8 hours of Wireless Internet usage in Korea. Those who
spend more than 10 hours per week account for 45.9% ('10-16 hours' 18.2%, 'More
than 16 hours' 27.7%).

and usage rate is 31.0%
Out of the total foreign residents in Korea (aged 12 to 59), almost half (48.2%) of
Internet users have heard of 'Real name confirmation relay system for foreigners' and
31.0% have actually used it.
24.4% have heard of 'Public I-PIN service' while 11.3% have actually used it. 18.5%

In order to promote Internet usage by foreign residents in Korea, 'Simplifying sign up
process and requirements' (48.3%) need to be resolved first. In addition, 'Simplifying
internet installation(subscription) process' (42.1%) and 'Reducing internet access fees'
(41.6%) are required.
