October 2011

Christmas Opening Weekend!

The best way to mark Apple Day is by planting apple trees in our gardens. Most of us don’t have the room for an orchard, but maybe we can find room for an apple tree or two and continue our great tradition of English apples. Come in store and see our new stock of apple trees today! Apple trees come in many forms, and when choosing one there are a few factors to be considered, including desired height, flowering time, and pollination partner. When you come in store, ask our experts what tree is best for you.

For the whole weekend, you will receive a free bag of compost and free tree stake with every apple tree you purchase**.

Apple Day was initiated in 1990 to protect and promote British apple growing history in the UK and is celebrated in each year on 21st October, by people organizing hundreds of local events. This year, Waterside Garden Centre will be celebrating Apple Day from 21st to 23rd of October.

Adnams Southwold Cellar & Kitchen will be offering free samples of all of their exclusive Suffolk Ciders along with a free sample of apple pie, fresh from our Oasis Restaurant.

If you like a homemade Sunday carvery, you can get one free slice of apple pie with every regular carvery purchased in our restaurant on 23rd October 2011.*

Waterside Garden Centre will be celebrating Apple Day from 21st to 23rd of October 2011

Continue mowing your lawn this month until it stops growing - normally when temperatures drop to 5oC. Raise the height of your lawn mower blades for a slightly longer cut. If you haven’t done so yet, make sure you give your lawn an autumn feed to help it thrive during the winter months. Ask in store which lawn food would be best for your lawn.

Plant spring bulbs during October. The perfect accompaniment to spring bulbs are pansies. We have a great range available right now!

Give your hanging baskets a final liquid feed to give them a last boost of energy before the frost sets in.

October is the ideal time to plant bare-root gooseberry bushes for a bumper crop next summer. This month is also a great time to plant rhubarb crowns to produce tender pink/red stems next spring.

Towards the end of the month, think about harvesting remaining root vegetables before the frost comes. However, parsnips and sprouts are best harvested after the first frost as this makes them sweeter. Apples also need harvesting this month. Pick them off the tree and store them in boxes wrapped in newspaper. Store these boxes in a cool dry place and your apples should last the winter.

Happy Halloween

With Halloween fast approaching, come and visit us to enter this year’s free colouring competition. The standard was so high last year, we decided to do something a little more challenging. We need you to decorate this pumpkin ready for Halloween. You can pick up a design sheet in the Oasis Restaurant, the Planteria Coffee Shop or at Customer Services. A winner will be chosen for the boys as well as the girls. All entrants must be under 12 years of age. Closing date, 30/10/11 (Parents must be Garden Club Members). Don’t forget to pick up some pumpkins while you’re with us for just £2.99 each or 2 for £5. Visit our blog at www.begardenhappy.com/blog for Halloween ideas and to download a design sheet.

We have a new addition to our aquatics department. Marine fish, hermit crabs and coral are now available as well as everything you need to maintain a salt water environment. To start a small marine aquarium you need a quality tank such as a Juwel Rio (£255.27), a protein skimmer (Juwel skimmer £129.99) as well as two marine lights (one white, one blue from £21.44 each). You then need to fill your tank with salted R.O. water which we sell for 30p per litre. Once you have added coral sand (£4.99 per kg) you can add live rock to your tank (£12.99 per kg). Once your water has been tested (£28.99 per test kit) and the tank has been left for three to four weeks to establish, you can start introducing marine fish and coral to your new marine tank. It’s a good idea to start with some hardy marine fish such as clown fish to start with to allow the new environment to become more established.

What’s looking good in OctoberOctober is packed full of good looking plants. If you’re looking for a good show of flowers, look for pansies, polyanthus, primulas, violas and wallflowers. Plant these in your borders and flower beds for plenty of colour over the coming months. If you’re looking for a bolder statement, ornamental trees are looking fantastic right now; especially Japanese maples such as Acer Palmatum.

Grasses are wonderful at this time of year and add structure to any garden, whilst for a splash of colour, autumn bulbs shine like jewels.

If you planted autumn flowering bulbs, these should all be coming out now and will really add a beautiful splash of colour to your garden.
