WMU FACILITIES ARE ...The Western Michigan Univer-sity gymnastics team competes in one of the finest facilities in the Mid-American Conference: Univer-sity Arena (5,421) in Read Field-house.

Now in its 12th season, University Arena was part of a $50 million ren-ovation and expansion project that covered student recreation, physi-cal education and intercollegiate athletic facilities.

University Arena serves as the home facility for Bronco Gymnas-tics as well as the WMU men’s and women’s basketball teams and volleyball squad. The facility also serves as host for numerous high school events, including local basketball games and state tourna-ments.

When not competing on the main floor, the WMU gymnastics team trains in its own facility located on the third floor (see right) of the are-na complex.

Through the years, Read Fieldhouse has hosted numerous collegiate competitions, including the 1995 and 2000 State of Michigan Clas-sic and Mid-American Conference Championships in 1986, 1992 and 1999. The building has also played host to several high school competi-tions.

WMU FACILITIES ARE ...

TOP NOTCH.

Located on the third level of Read Fieldhouse, the Broncos’ practice gymnasium is permanently setup and includes one of the best land-ing pits found at a college gymnas-tics facility.

The gym also has a competition-sized spring floor, as well as four balance beams and two uneven bars. It annually serves as the site of Western’s intrasquad preseason meet.

The most recent improvements in-clude an oversized floor (44x44), installed last December, as well as several new practice mats.

The vault, women’s single rail and tumbling strip are located adjacent to the landing pit. Having a work-out area exclusively designated for Bronco Gymnastics allows for flex-ible training hours and exclusive use of the facilities. The building also includes the team’s locker room and training room, providing a centralized location.

DAVEKUZARAHEAD COACHMichigan, ’80First Season at WMU/11th overallCareer record: 100-68

Dave Kuzara is in his first season at Western Michigan and his 11th overall as a head coach. Kuzara brings various levels of coaching ex-perience to WMU, having previously served as an assistant coach at the University of Arkansas, West Virginia University and the University of Michigan. Kuzara was also the head coach at University of Massachu-setts for 10 seasons before UMass dropped the sport in 2002.

Most recently, Kuzara was an assistant at the University of Arkansas, where he helped the Razorbacks to a program-best fifth place finish at the 2009 NCAA Championships. In 2008, Arkansas placed 10th at the NCAA Championships. Primarily in charge of coaching and developing floor exercise routines, the Razorback floor team was ranked in the top five all season and as high as No. 1 in 2009. Kuzara worked with three All-Americans on the floor during his time at Arkansas and was responsible for recruiting activities in Region V (Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky).

Prior to his three seasons at Arkansas, he was an assistant at West Virginia from 2003-2006, helping the Mountaineers to the 2004 EAGL team title and three NCAA Regional appearances. Primarily an uneven bars coach at West Virginia, Kuzara’s bar workers only counted one fall during the entire 2006 season.

In addition to his duties in the gym, Kuzara assisted student-athletes in the classroom helping the Mountaineer gymnastics team improve its overall grade point average from a 2.6 to a 3.34. In addition, the program posted seven NACGC Academic All-America scholars in 2005 and had nine in 2006.

Kuzara has 10 years of head coaching experience at the University of Massachusetts where he built a 100-68 career record. His UMass teams won back-to-back Atlantic 10 team titles (1996, 1997) and had five runner-up finishes during his tenure. He qualified individuals to NCAA Nationals on four different occasions and his teams qualified to the NCAA Regionals nine out of 10 years. Kuzara coached Jill Fisher to a third place finish on the floor at the NCAA Championships, on her way to First Team All-American status. Academically, UMass garnered 35 NACGC Academic All-America recognitions. Kuzara was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year in 1996, 1997 and 2002. UMass dropped six sports including women’s gymnastics in 2002.

Kuzara also served as an assistant coach at Michigan from 1991-93, where he helped the Wolverines to two Big Ten titles (1992, 1993) and it’s first-ever NCAA Championship appearance in 1993. Kuzara was named 1992 NCAA Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year. He helped oversee the development of Beth Wymer, who became U-M’s first national champion on the uneven bars in the ’93 season.

Kuzara obtained a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Michigan in 1980.

Kuzara and his partner Natasha Brande have a daughter, Izabelle.

CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS

1986 1987

The WMU gymnastics program, under the direction of current Bronco athlet-ics director Kathy Beauregard, claimed back-to-back MAC titles in 1986 and 1987.

The 1986 squad (pictured left) posted a then school-record performance of 180.65. The win was the first ever for the program and came at Read Fieldhouse.

The Broncos successfully defended their MAC title in 1987, edging out run-ner-up Bowling Green. Current Bronco coach Terry Karwoski was a member of that championship squad.

WMU Hall of Fame member Linda Mo-ran is pictured at the top of the podium in the all-around. Teammate Bonnie Bog-giano claimed second and Cindy Mazei garnered fifth overall.

The 1988 edition of the Bronco pro-gram nearly claimed the team’s third-straight MAC title, falling by just one-tenth of a point. WMU did, however, set the school record for dual meet victo-ries in a season, posting a 14-3 record, which included a run of seven-straight wins to begin the year.

2006 Winning the MAC Regular Season Championship and taking the crown at the MAC Championships, 2006 will go down as one of the most decorated sea-sons in school history.

The Broncos finished the regular season with a 5-1 dual record. Terry Karwoski was named MAC Head Coach of the Year for the second time in her career and the Broncos boasted the Gymnast and Senior of the Year in Cherisse Marier.

At the MAC Championships, Western Michigan posted a 193.800 to edge out rival Central Michigan with a 193.175. The Broncos took first in every event except the floor exercise, adding runners-up on bars, beam and floor.

WMU also boasted the top two all-arounders in Jen-nifer Sturgis and Marier. In addition to winning the all-around, Sturgis won both the beam and vault, with Marier taking first on the bars. Both were recognized for their performances as they were named First Team All-MAC.

Kathy Beauregard, the Director of Athletics at Western Michigan Univer-sity, has been involved with the Broncos in several capacities over the course of the past 29 years. She is the second-longest serving athletic director in the Mid-American Conference.

Beauregard arrived in Kalamazoo as a coach before moving into admin-istration and is entering her 12th season as mentor of one of the top programs in the MAC.

WMU athletic facilities have greatly improved under Beauregard’s lead-ership. The $8-million dollar Bill Brown Football Alumni Center and the $21-million Seelye Athletic Indoor Center have benefited numerous sports teams and provide top-notch facilities for Bronco student-athletes. The

locker rooms at Lawson Ice Arena were renovated and completed over the past year and the department continues to raise funds for the Hyames Field Renovation Project. WMU is in the midst of building a two million dollar state-of-the-art facility and Field Turf was also installed at Waldo Stadium during the Summer of 2006. Heavily involved in her profession, Beauregard assumed the chair position of the NCAA Olympic Sports Liaison Committee in 2001, a position which she held for two years. She represented WMU as a member of the NCAA Championships Cabinet and NCAA Football Bowl Certification Committee and currently serves on the NCAA Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

The 2008-09 year saw the Bronco volleyball and men’s tennis programs capture regular season MAC crowns. The volleyball team advanced to the round of 16 at the NCAA Tournament, while the Bronco football team participated in its second bowl in three seasons and the men’s basketball team won yet another MAC West title.

The 2007-08 academic year saw success within the department, on the playing field and in the classroom. WMU Athletics announced the renovation of historic Hyames Field. Heading into the future, the facility will be known as Robert J. Bobb Stadium and will undergo $2.0 million of work over the next year. Renovations to Sorensen Courts, Fran Ebert Field and upcoming work to the men’s basketball locker rooms all highlight Beauregard’s dedication to moving WMU Athletics forward.

Athletically, WMU’s tennis programs found success yet again with both winning a regular season MAC title and the men’s program capturing the tournament title to earn a berth in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Both Dave Morin and Besty Kuhle were named MAC Coaches of the Year for the second-straight season. The men’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs captured MAC West titles during the past athletic season. A pair of Bronco track student-athletes earned All-America honors with Becky Horn earning the nod during the indoor and outdoor seasons and finishing third in the 800m at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Beauregard ensured the longevity of WMU’s football and men’s basketball programs by restructuring Bill Cubit’s and Steve Hawkins’ contracts in 2007 and 2008, respectively. WMU Athletics also welcomed Tasha McDowell as the fifth head coach of WMU’s women’s basketball program in 2008.

Academically, WMU boasted a pair of Academic All-Americans in Anthony Gebhart (first team) and Joe Reitz (second team). Gebhart was the first football representative since 1998. Volleyball, baseball and gymnastics finished in the top 10 among other like programs in the APR and WMU football had the highest APR score in the MAC for the 2006-07 campaign. Overall, 415 student-athletes finished 2007-08 with a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA.

In 2006-07, men’s and women’s tennis not only repeated as MAC Tournament champions but captured regular season titles as well. Both Morin and Kuhle earned MAC Coach of the Year honors. The WMU football team participated in the program’s first postseason bowl game since 1988. The Broncos boasted three NCAA statistical champions in five categories — Ameer Ismail (FB - sacks and tackles for loss); Carrie Moore (WBB - points per game) and Mark Letestu (HOCKEY - freshman scoring and short-handed goals).

Western Michigan continued to pursue excellence in the classroom in 2006-07 as 26 student-athletes in 14 sports earned Academic All-MAC status. WMU had five of its programs honored as being in the top-10 percent in their respective sport in the announcement for their excellence in the classroom over the years identified in the most recent APR; baseball, men’s basketball, gymnastics, women’s tennis and volleyball. The Broncos boasted five academic all-district selections and a pair of academic all-americans in Joe Reitz and Carrie Moore.

Moore and Ismail earned All-America status in their respective sports with Moore receiving honorable men-tion for Kodak All-American and Ismail earning Second Team AP All-American.

In 2005-06, Beauregard oversaw a department that captured the Jacoby Cup Trophy, awarded to the top women’s program in the MAC based on sports standings. WMU has now won the Jacoby and Reese (men’s overall sports award) trophies during Beauregard’s tenure. The Broncos garnered three regular season titles — gymnastics, softball and women’s tennis and two MAC Tournament titles — gymnastics and women’s tennis. Under Beauregard’s direction, WMU also won its 100th MAC title all-time in 2005-06.

The 2004-05 athletic campaign continued what has become common place at Western Michigan. Team and individual success began in the fall and continued through the spring, highlighted by a MAC Champion-ship in women’s tennis. The strength of the women’s programs as a group allowed WMU to finish second in the Jacoby Cup.

Along with four MAC titles (men’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer and men’s tennis) in 2003-04, the Broncos also enjoyed an increased level of success in the classroom. WMU’s graduation rate of 83 percent in 2003 ranked eighth nationally and featured a program grade point average of nearly 3.00.

On the playing field in 2002-03, the athletics campaign was highlighted by a pair of conference titles in women’s basketball and softball. The men’s basketball team also made a postseason appearance, com-peting in the National Invitation Tournament. Postseason appearances by the WMU football, volleyball and men’s tennis team highlighted the program’s 2000-01 athletic competition.

The 1999-2000 campaign was highlighted by the football team’s West Division title and trip to the MAC Championship. The women’s tennis squad captured the MAC Tourney title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight year and the women’s basketball squad made its second-consecutive appearance in the WNIT.

In just her second year (1998-99), Beauregard provided support which helped the Bronco men’s athletic squads jump from 10th to first place in the Reese Cup standings, giving Western Michigan a share of its first all-sports trophy in 17 years.

Previously the senior associate athletic director (1993-97), she supervised all revenue sports, the Univer-sity’s compliance with NCAA rules, academic services, student-athlete welfare, and athletic marketing and communications.

Beauregard initially came to WMU in 1979 as head women’s gymnastics coach. In nine seasons (1980-88), she produced two MAC title teams and was twice named the conference’s coach of the year.

Beauregard has been active in numerous community service organizations, including Kalamazoo Rotary, the American Heart Association, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Glowing Embers Girl Scouts Council.

Honored by numerous organizations throughout her career, Beauregard was awarded both the Woman of Achievement Award (YWCA) and Athena Award (Kalamazoo Chamber of Commerce) in 2002.

Beauregard is a native of Kalamazoo and graduate of Loy Norrix High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Hope College in 1979 and a master’s degree from WMU in 1981.

In 2000, Beauregard received the Hope College Distinguished Alumni Award from her alma mater.

She and husband, Rick, have a 18-year-old son, Brad, who will attend WMU in 2009. Rick retired from Kal-amazoo Public Schools after 32 years of service and began Beauregard Home Services in the Fall of 2006.
