HUSkIeS VS. MAC ALL-TIMeConnecticut enters Saturday’s meeting vs. Western Michigan with an 18-3 record against opponents from the Mid-American Conference (MAC) since making the move to the Football Bowl Subdivision in 2002. The losses include a 30-16 defeat at Temple in 2010 and a 38-31 loss to Western Michigan last year. UConn has already defeated UMass from the MAC this year and plays host to Buffalo next Saturday. Prior to the ’10 Temple game, Connecticut’s last loss to a MAC opponent came back on Sept. 28, 2002, when it dropped a 24-21 overtime decision vs. Ball State. UConn’s record vs. MAC teams also includes wins over Buffalo in 2010 and ‘11, Ohio in 2009 and Temple in 2008 during the regular season and against Buffalo in the 2009 International Bowl. The Huskies became quite familiar with MAC foes as the school transitioned to FBS football. UConn faced four of its members in both the 2002 and 2003 seasons and two more in 2004 and ’07. UConn’s wins against the MAC also includes a 39-10 win over Toledo in the 2004 Motor City Bowl.

UMass Individual Leaders

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - University of Connecticut redshirt sophomore quarterback Chandler Whitmer (Newman, Ga.) threw for 219 yards and Connecticut scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams to beat Massachusetts 37-0 Thursday night before a crowd of 35,270 at Rentschler Field in the opener for both teams. Connecticut’s defense dominated the game, holding UMass tojust59yardsofoffenseandlimitingtheMinutementothreefirstdowns. UMass did not have an offensive snap in UConn territory andthethreeUMassfirstdownstiedaHuskyschoolrecordfortheleast allowed. Redshirt sophomore Lyle McCombs (Staten Island, N.Y.) rushedfor82yardsandafirst-quartertouchdown,oneoftwobythe offense. UConn also scored on a 37-yard interception return by redshirt senior cornerback Dwayne Gratz (Piscataway, N.J.) and on a blocked punt. RedshirtjuniorChadChristen(Etters,Pa.)addedfieldgoalsof36,47and19yardsforhisfirstcollegiatescores. This was the 72nd meeting between the two programs but the firstsince1999,whenbothteamswereDivisionI-AA. Whitmer, a transfer who threw for more than 3,000 yards in junior college last year, completed 15 of his 25 passes, but also threwtwointerceptionsinhisfirstgameasaFBSstarter. Hehithisfirstthreepasses,includinga16-yardertoseniorNickWilliams(EastWindsor,N.J.)thatsetuptheHuskies’firstscore, a one-yard plunge by McCombs that capped a 12-play, 75-yard drive. Williams, who had more than 140 yards of total offense, returned the next UMass punt 34 yards, setting up UConn on the UMass 30. But safety Darren Thellen stopped the UConn drive - and made a few highlight shows - by diving out of bounds and tipping aWhitmerpassbacktolinebackerTomBrandt, whomadehisfirstcareer interception. UConn had 372 yards of offense, but had three drives end with turnovers deep in UMass territory. Whitmer split time with redshirt sophomore Scott McCum-mings (Natick, Mass.), who ran UConn’s version of the “Wildcat” offense. McCummings ran for 13 yards and a one-yard fourth-quarter touchdown that put UConn up 34-0. The defense got into the scoring column when Gratz stepped in front of UMass receiver Marken Michel and returned an inter-ception37yardsforatouchdownwith1:49leftinthefirsthalf. The special teams got their score with just over four minutes left in the third quarter. UConn’s Taylor Mack (Powder Springs, Ga.) blocked a punt after Colter Johnson dropped the snap, and theHuskies’MaxDeLorenzo(Berlin,Conn.)recoveredintheendzone to give UConn a 27-0 lead. UMass never got its offense started, averaging just over 1 yardperplay,andfailingtogetafirstdownuntiljust34secondsbefore halftime.
