After closing out the 2009 season with a school-record 34 wins, just shy of an Avista-NAIA World Series Opening Round bid, the Park University baseball team will take the field in 2010 hungry to build on last season’s

success while joining a new conference for the first time in 10 years. Park must replace its entire infield and two outfield positions from last sea-son’s record-setting team, and while the rotation lost three of its pieces from the end of the 2009 season, head coach Cary Lundy believes the pitching staff will carry the Pirates early-on in 2010. “It’s hard to believe, but as a whole, this pitching staff is much-improved,” Lundy said. “I feel like we have more weapons this year on the mound than we have had in the past, and a lot of that comes from having more guys with swing-and-miss ca-pabilities. “With additions to the staff like James Parsons and Joseph Kassanavoid, along with the improvements made by guys like Derek McGowan, this is one of the best pitching staffs we’ve had in my time at Park.” The 2010 rotation could in-clude a mix of pitchers, both new and returning to the roster, led by 2009 all-conference performer Matt Lackner, who tied Park’s single-season record with nine wins last year to go with a 3.41 ERA and 69 strike outs in 63.1 innings pitched. Park could also get a pitching spark from returners Michael Barbosa (3-3, 6.84 ERA), Trevor Pearson (0-0, 4.50 ERA) and Gabe Perez (0-1, 4.32 ERA), while McGowan is one of the most improved returners on the roster, according to Lundy, after going 1-0 in a pair of starts and five appearances last season. Kassanavoid, a transfer from Kansas State, will try his hand on the mound for the Pirates in 2010 after spending two full football seasons with the Wildcats in Manhattan at both quarterback and defensive

line. Parsons comes to Park from Northeastern Junior College in Colorado after beginning his collegiate baseball career with one full season and one injury-shortened season at NCAA Division I Central Arkansas. In the bullpen, Corey Stafford, Eric Goodline and Ryan Woolam will provide depth for the Pirates, while Kassanavoid could be used to close games initially in the 2010 season. Park’s infield will be its biggest question mark after losing all four starters from a year ago, but a familiar face will move into the infield after spending most of last season roaming the outfield, as Darian Sandford moves to second base in the 2010 season. Sandford stole a school-record 43 bases last season for the Pirates and

led the NAIA for most of the 2009 season in stolen bases per game, and Sandford should assume his spot from the 2009 season atop the

Park batting order, where he hit nearly .390 and caused nothing but problems for opposing teams on the base path. “Darian’s one of the fastest players in college baseball,” Lundy said. “He has a chance to do some very special things for us, here, and he’s one of the most dangerous players in

the country when it comes to putting the ball on the ground and getting on base. He has the potential to lead the

country in stolen bases, and he has a bright future in this game because of his speed.” Sandford, who will attempt to replace last sea-son’s starting second baseman in Pete Peters, will

be joined in the middle infield by an All-Jayhawk Conference transfer from Fort Scott Community College, as Cullen Baxter will attempt to fill the shoes of current assistant coach Nick Koura-tou, who started in 45 of the team’s 46 games last season at short. “Cullen is a guy that gives us a good bat with some power in the middle

infield, and he’s also a solid defender of the baseball,” Lundy said. “He was a middle-of-the-order guy at Fort Scott, so he will contribute both offensively and defensively, for us.” Third base will be occupied by a



true freshman moving from the shortstop position, as Jimmy Smelcer will move to the hot corner after playing short at Liberty High School last spring. Smelcer was also the Blue Jays’ quarterback on the LHS football team, a factor that Lundy feels will play a role in his maturity on the diamond. “Jimmy has a lot of upside and potential, but his maturity will help him early on this season,” Lundy said. “He’s a guy that handled a lot of pressure on the football field, and we look for that to translate into his play at third base.” Ryan Rush, a transfer from Maple Woods, is the early leader to earn the starting nod at first base, while Goodline and transfer Mike El-liott, who comes to Park from MidAmerica Nazarene, will provide depth at first for the Pirates in 2010. Behind the plate, Park expects a mix of returner Bryan Coggins and newcomers Philip Garrison and Sam Tracy to contribute at catcher. Coggins hit .289 with three home runs last season for the Pirates, see-ing time behind the plate, at first base and at designated hitter, while Gar-rison transfers to Park from Northland rival William Jewell. Tracy is a product of Iowa, coming to Park from Ellsworth Community College. The catching trio will attempt to replace an all-conference selection behind the plate from last year, as Adam Shupe departs after driving in 56 runs and belting 11 home runs with a .423 batting average. “Our infield has a tough act to follow, overall,” said Lundy. “Last year’s infield had been together two years and was one of the best around. We’ll look for these guys to come together, though, and really provide a solid defensive base for us as well as a lot of offense.” The Pirate outfield will also have to replace a pair of starters from last year, as school RBI record-holder Jesse Kearns, along with four-year starter Ryan Weedin leave holes in left and center for the Pirates in 2010. Kearns led the team with 12 home runs and 60 driven in, while Weedin was the leader in runs scored, plating 52 during the year. Left field is a battle between two transfers, currently, for Park, as Seve Alvarez and Cody Spaulding battle for the open spot in the Park

outfield. Alvarez was the starting right fielder for Polk Community College in Winter Haven, Fla., last season, and comes to the Pirates after signing initially with for-mer rival Bellevue University. Spaulding is also a junior college transfer, coming to Park from Santa Rosa Community College in California. “Both of those guys are talented transfers who bring a lot to the table,” Lundy said. “Spaulding started in center last year for his junior college, and has

good speed. Alvarez has great speed, and could be dangerous on the bases when paired with Darian. Both guys have strong arms, so they’ll

contribute for us early on.” Center field will be occupied by Ricky Alfonso, a transfer from Cochise College, which is also the junior college home of Michael Onwumere,

who will start in right field after an injury-shortened 2009. On-wumere started in 23 games before a season-ending hit-by-

pitch at Peru State cut his year short, ending the season with a .333 batting average, two home runs and 18

driven in. “Michael’s eager to get out there,” Lundy said.

“Last year was really disappointing, for him, and his experience will really help guide our out-field this year.”

Lundy also noted that the designat-ed hitter slot will come from Park’s pool of outfielders, catchers and first base-men. He also said that Scott Tatro, a returner from the 2009 season, will help the Pirates as a utility player, adding depth to both the infield and outfield in 2010. “Our team isn’t as powerful, at the plate, but we’re more athletic this

year, which could provide problems for our opponents when we get on base,”

Lundy said. “Our pitching is improved, and our athleticism is going to make us a much bet-

ter defensive team this season. It has the potential to be a really good year for our program.”

Park University begins its first season back in the American Midwest Conference in the 2009-10 school year, rejoining the league after nine years

of membership in the MCAC and as an NAIA Indepen-dent in basketball. Park previously held membership in the AMC from 1993 to 2000, exiting the league following the spring semester in 2000. “This is a great partnership for Park University and the AMC,” said Park University Director of Athlet-ics, Claude English. “In the ever-changing landscape of collegiate athletics, it is important to have strong alliances within a conference for all of our athletic programs. The AMC gives us one unified conference home for our pro-grams, and it also provides a familiarity with our past history in the league.” Park is one of nine AMC member institutions, joining Columbia College, Hannibal-LaGrange Col-lege, Harris-Stowe State University, McKendree Uni-versity, Missouri Baptist University, Stephens College, William Woods University and Williams Baptist Col-lege. “The AMC looks forward to Park University rejoin-ing the conference, and we know that Park will bring a lot to our league in the way of sponsored teams and quality conference competition,” Lowell Pitzer, AMC Commissioner, said. “Park’s location and proximity to the NAIA Na-tional Headquarters will also provide a boost for our conference. This was a unanimous decision by our executive committee, and we are excited for Park to come in next year.” The AMC sponsors championships in 13 differ-ent sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and wom-en’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s track and field, and volleyball. The purpose of the American Midwest Confer-ence is to promote the positive ideals and objectives of athletics, to provide an organization of colleges and universities with similar foundations to engage in ath-letic contests on an equal basis, to serve as a forum to formulate and solve common problems, to enhance and preserve athletics in their true perspective and to promote athletics in an academic environment.

CARY LUNDYHead Baseball Coach8th Season • 201-142-1

Cary Lundy enters his eighth season as the head baseball coach at Park University as the school’s winningest head baseball coach

and the only skipper to total 100 or more wins in his career, Lundy is 201-142-1 in seven previous seasons at the helm of the Pirate baseball program, including a school-record 34 wins in 2009, surpassing a pair of 30-win seasons for Park also under Lundy’s guidance in 2003 and 2006. Park opened the season with a school-re-cord 12-0 start under Lundy in 2009, and during the season, his team produced a 16-4 record at home while putting together a 15-5 mark in the program’s final season in the Midlands Col-legiate Athletic Conference. The 2009 Pirates appeared in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll and at season’s end, the Pirates had a shot at conference supremacy, but Park fell to Bellevue in the MCAC championship game, 10-4. Lundy’s Pirates fell just short of postseason com-petition in 2009 as the last team out of the 2009 Avis-ta-NAIA World Series Opening Round. In all, 2009 produced five First-Team All-MCAC performers, one Rawlings/MCAC Gold Glove Honoree, two Daktron-ics-NAIA Scholar Athletes, seven Honorable Mention All-MCAC selections and the league’s pitcher of the year, Josh Hake. During the conference tournament, Lundy also

picked up his 200th career win, beating York 5-4 on May 5. He then picked up No. 201 that same day, defeating Peru State, 17-4. In 2008, Lundy managed the team to 28 wins, and the team was one win away from advancing to an NAIA Super Regional, falling to Bellevue University in the NAIA Region IV title game. Park also played for a shot at the MCAC tournament title in Omaha, Neb., and at the conclusion of the 2008 season, Park had its first player drafted dur-ing the Lundy Era when Hake was taken in the 50th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. In 2006, he guided the Pirates to the Region IV Tournament championship game, while in 2007, his Pirates qualified for the tournament, amassing 28 wins and finishing the season seven games above .500. Before taking over the program in 2003, he served for three seasons as an assistant coach at Park, starting when the program was reinstated in 2000. During the summer months, Lundy coaches UMB Bank in Kansas City’s prestigious Ban Johnson League, leading his squads to seven league cham-pionships. In addition, he has also served as a recommending scout for the Cincinnati Reds organization. A 1982 graduate of Park and native of Kansas City, Mo., Lundy played base-ball, basketball and ran cross country as a Pirate. He has two children, J.D. and Kiely. Throughout his collegiate playing and coaching careers, he has been associated with nearly every varsity baseball game in Park University’s baseball program history.

Nick Kouratou begins his first season as assistant baseball coach in the Park University baseball program, two years after coming to the Pirates in

the 2008 season as the club’s two-year starting shor-stop. In his two seasons with the team from 2008 to 2009, Kouratou played and started in 87 games, collecting a .390 career batting average with 115 base hits, including six career home runs, 26 doubles and 88 runs batted in. Kouratou was an honorable-mention All-MCAC performer in his junior sea-son, 2008, where he was also named All-NAIA Region IV, followed by a senior campaign that was capped by being named the Rawlings/MCAC Gold Glove Shortstop at the end of the 2009 season. In addition to his on-field accolades during his Park University career, Kou-ratou was also named to the 2009 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete team, earn-ing the NAIA’s highest academic honor after his senior season at Park. A native of Tucson, Ariz., Kouratou came to the Pirates from Tucson’s Pima Community College, and last May, Kouratou graduated from Park with a degree in Psychology. Kouratou is engaged to former Park softball player and cheerleader Megan Goings.

Michael Younghanz begins his second season assisting the Park baseball coaching staff, serving as an assistant coach for the 2010 sea-

son after finishing his undergraduate degree last May at Park University. Younghanz played one season for the Pirates, in 2007, hitting .388 with 62 base hits, including eight doubles and seven home runs in 47 games played a third base. He drove in 36 during his senior season, earning First-Team All-MCAC honors at the end of the 2007 campaign after also earning MCAC Player of the Week honors twice during the regular season. Following his senior season with the Pirates, Younghanz signed to play professionally with the Pensacola Pelicans, an independent minor league orga-nization in Pensacola, Fla. Younghanz came to the Pirates from Northwest Missouri State University, where he played and started in 23 games for the Bearcats, driving in 13 runs with a .288 batting average, including four doubles. A Kansas City native, Younghanz holds a bachelor’s degree in business from Park, and he is currently working on his master’s degree in Entrepreneur-ship at Park.

HOT START FUELS BIG SEASON Park University got its record-breaking season off to a great start in 2009, winning their first 12 games for the Pi-rates’ first 12-0 start in school history. Park began the year with a four-game series sweep of Paul Quinn College in Texas, followed by a doubleheader sweep in the Lone Star State over Wiley College. Park then took a pair of doubleheaders in Kansas over Ottawa and Sterling, and the Pirates provided their fans with something to cheer about in the home opener, taking two from the University of Sioux Falls for wins 11 and 12 of the season. Nick Kouratou began his senior season with a big game, hitting for the cycle on opening day against Paul Quinn, and in the 12-game stretch, the Pirates had three wins by run-rule. The streak ended at home, with William Penn taking three of four from the Pirates in early March.

TEAM TAKES 10 OF FIRST 12 IN MCAC After a 13-5 nonconference start, Park went on a tear in its initial non-conference schedule, beginning with a four-game sweep of Central Christian that saw three games in the four-game series end on run rules. The Pirates followed the big weekend in McPherson with a split doubleheader at Peru State before taking three of four from College of the Ozarks in the first home conference games of the 2009 season. A nonconference sweep of Hannibal-LaGrange fol-lowed, and the Pirates were on the national stage the next weekend, taking on nationally ranked Bellevue University in Omaha. Park led in all four games of the four-game set, winning the opener but falling in the next three on late-game heroics by the Bruins.

PARK WINS FINAL EIGHT IN REGULAR SEASON Following the series loss at Bellevue, Park ripped through its final eight regular-season games, sweeping a four-game series from Oklahoma Wesleyan and a make-up doubleheader with Peru State to close the conference campaign. Park also dusted off its nonconference schedule in late April, taking two on Senior Day from Ottawa University, as senior pitcher Josh Hake came in to close the doublehead-er’s opening game, picking up his first-career save as a Pirate.

PIRATES BID FAREWELL TO 15 ON SENIOR DAY Park bid farewell to 15 players in the Senior Day dou-bleheader sweep of Ottawa, including five juniors and 10 seniors who graduated at the end of the 2009 season. Seniors Josh Hake, Joe Christiano, Kiki Fuentes and Dustin Laird departed the pitching staff, while Adam Shupe completed his lone season with the Pirates behind the plate in 2009. Brett Gordon, Pete Peters, Nick Kouratou and Laird made up the team’s all-senior infield during the 2009 season, while Ryan Weedin left a void in center field after completing his fourth year with the program. Juniors Jesse Kearns, Jeff Hall, Ryan Duede, Kyle Iver-son and Jake Russell departed, as well, to graduate prior to the 2010 season. 200TH WIN AND THE MCAC TOURNAMENT Park didn’t anticipate its season ending in the MCAC tournament, but a first-round loss to Peru State put the Pi-rates’ backs against the wall early in the conference post-

season championship. Park fought back for a 5-4 win over York, giving head coach Cary Lundy his 200th career win, and immediately turned around to level Peru State in the day-two night game, 17-4. The Pirates’ season would end with a 10-4 loss in the championship game to Bellevue, and Park was one of the last left out of at-large qualification to the 2009 NAIA World Series Opening Round.

RECORDS FALL IN 2009 The 2009 season was a record-breaking year for the Park University baseball program, as the team won a school-record 34 games and head coach Cary Lundy add-ed to his record win total by becoming the first Park coach to eclipse 200 career wins. Park also saw a number of offensive records fall, in-cluding Jesse Kearns establishing a new school record for runs batted in with 60. Ryan Weedin also broke the single-season record for triples, belting five three-base hits, and Adam Shupe earned a single-season record 28 bases on balls from the clean-up spot. Darian Sandford shattered the single-season stolen bases mark, swiping 43 bags to come just three shy of the Park career record for steals. On the mound, Matt Lackner tied the mark of nine wins set in previous season by Josh Hake (2008) and Adam Clay (2004), while Hake also etched his name in the record book for a second time, winning eight games in the 2009 season. Joe Christiano found the Pirate record book for saves, clos-ing out a school-record six games in save situations. Hake and Lackner each turned in top-five single-season performances for strike outs, and Hake posted six complete games, ranking fourth on the all-time list. Many offensive categories were also approached, as Bryan Coggins was hit by 12 pitches, second-most all-time, and Nick Kouratou had 20 doubles, one off the mark set by T.J. Guadagnano in the program’s first year of resurrection. Weedin had a top-five year in runs scored, while Shupe drove in 56 runs to land in the school’s all-time record book for run production. Kearns and Shupe also landed in the record book for home runs, belting 12 and 11, respectively. In the career record book, Weedin rose to the top in runs, doubles, triples and walks, while Brett Gordon be-came the school’s all-time leader in reaching base by being hit by a pitch.

POSTSEASON HONORS The Park University baseball program placed 12 players on postseason all-conference teams in the MCAC in 2009, including the league’s Pitcher of the Year, Josh Hake. Hake was joined on the first team by fellow rotation-member Matt Lackner, while Jesse Kearns, Adam Shupe and Pete Peters were all named to the MCAC’s first team as position players. Senior shortstop Nick Kouratou also earned conference honors, being named the MCAC/Rawlings Gold Glove Shortstop. Kouratou was also a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete, earning the NAIA’s highest academic honor along with Park teammate and fellow Tucson-native Jeff Hall. Park also placed six players on the MCAC Baseball Honorable Mention list, including pitchers Kiki Fuentes, Joe Christiano and Dustin Laird, as well as outfielders Darian Sandford and Ryan Weedin, and first baseman Brett Gor-don.

Darian Sandford established Park University’s single-season stolen bases record in 2009, swiping 43 bags in 50 tries. He was also the NAIA’s leader in stolen bases per game, averaging 0.96 stolen bases per contest. He had the nation’s fourth-highest total in stolen bases and was the only player in the NAIA with 40 or more steals in less than 50 games. Sandford is also just three behind the career stolen bases record at Park, which is held by R.J. Nab who stole 46 bases from 2003 to 2004.

The Copley Quad is Park University’s newest campus addition, housing 250 students in four-person suites, which include approximately 840 square feet of furnished living space. Each unit is comprised of two bedrooms, two full bathrooms and a shared living area with an efficiency kitchen. The building boasts 2,500 square feet of common area space, and the new housing will also provide a greater level of access to the rest of the campus and meets all Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements, including an elevator and fully accessible rooms.



Park University calls Parkville, Mo., and the Greater Kansas City Area home, offering students the features of both small-town life and the flashing lights of the big

city. With a population of just more than 4,000, Parkville al-lows students the small-town lifestyle and tightly knit commu-nity often times associated with small college athletics and the NAIA. Originally a trading post on the Missouri River, Parkville grew as Kansas City boomed in the late 1800s, which included the founding of Park University. Both the University and the city get their names from Col. George S. Park, who played a key role in the early develop-ment of the area. Today, Parkville’s historic downtown district coupled with new shopping areas to the north and east of Park University’s Parkville Campus gives Park students two great entertainment opportunities within the area. Parkville sits within the Northland of the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area, which encompasses 15 counties, nine of which are in Missouri and six across the state line in Kansas. The Northland is locally referred to as “north of the river”. Contained wholly within Missouri, it encompasses portions of Clay County including the northern half of Kansas City, Mo., and the cities of Parkville, Liberty,

North Kansas City and Gladstone. As a whole, the Kansas City Metropolitan Area is situated at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, often referred to as Kaw Point, straddling the state border between Missouri and Kansas. Home to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, the College Basketball Experience, Municipal Auditorium and the Power & Light District, downtown Kansas City is re-establishing itself as one of the area’s best entertainment districts.



Mo., is the 27th largest in the United States, with an estimated population just shy of 2 million. A tradition-rich city known for its barbecue and storied sports history, Kan-sas City is currently home to Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals, the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL, Major League Soccer’s Kansas City Wizards, and the Kansas Speedway, which is host to several NASCAR events throughout the year including one Nextel Cup Series event in the fall. The Wizards currently play next door to Kansas Speedway at Community America Ballpark, which is also home to KC’s minor league baseball franchise, the Kansas City T-Bones. The Wizards are scheduled to open a new stadium in 2011 where Ban-nister Mall once stood on the city’s east side. Kansas City is also home to the Kansas City Explorers of World Team Tennis, and the city will add two more minor league franchises during Park University’s 2009-10 school year when the Missouri Mav-ericks of the CHL begin play in Independence, along with an American Basketball Associa-tion franchise that will work to begin play in the ABA’s 2009 season. Kansas City is also home to the Sprint Center and Kansas City Power & Light Dis-trict, which opened in 2007 and has quickly turned into one of the region’s top entertain-ment districts. The Sprint Center also houses the Col-lege Basketball Experience, which includes the College Basketball Hall of Fame. Blocks from the Power & Light District and the Sprint Center sits Municipal Auditori-um, home to the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. Additionally, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics moved its offices downtown in the summer of 2007 after more than five years in nearby Olathe, Kan., blocks from both the Sprint Center and Municipal Au-

ditorium. In the 2006-07 season, Park advanced to the tournament’s sweet 16, marking the deepest run in more than a decade by a Kansas City-area team. Kansas City is also known for its historic shopping districts, including West-port and the Country Club Plaza, which is one of the world’s largest outdoor shopping areas designed for motor-vehicles. Commonly referred to as “The Plaza”, the Country Club Plaza is home to one of the nation’s largest holiday light displays between the Thanksgiving Holiday and mid-January. In the Northland, Zona Rosa has become a popular shopping district, while Town Center and The Legends at Village West in Kansas keep shoppers oc-cupied in the Sunflower State.

At nearly 80,000 seats and the third-largest facility in the National Football League, Arrowhead Stadium is known as one of the NFL’s loudest when the Chiefs play on Sundays in the fall. Arrowhead is part of the two-stadium Truman Sports Complex, which also houses the newly renovated Kauffman Stadium, home of Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals. At nearly 40,000 seats, “the K” opened in 1973 and was home to the Royals in 1985 when the club brought home its first-ever World Series title in seven games over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Michael Droge, Ph.D., was appointed president by the Park University Board of Trustees in 2009. He arrived at Park in September 2002 to serve as the Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs.

His role in that position gave him charge of all academic areas of the Uni-versity, including acting as the liaison between the academic and non-academic components. A nationally respected participant in higher education, Droge has a distin-guished academic career of teaching, re-search and serving as principle investigator on federally funded programs such as the Multiethnic Biomedical Research Support Program from the National Institutes for Health, the Bridges to the Future Program from the NIH and the McNair Scholars Pro-gram from the Department of Education. He has also served as a member of the Neuroscience and Physiology Panel for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Washington, D.C., and an ad hoc reviewer for the National Institute of General Medi-cal Sciences, the National Science Foun-dation, and a journal reviewer for Brain Research and J. Neuroscience. His academic awards include the Beall Memorial Award for Outstanding Disserta-tion from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, the Mary Mason Lyon Award for Excellence in Scholarship, Teaching and Service, and the President’s Award for Distinguished Service from Tex-as Woman’s University. Droge received his Bachelor of Arts de-gree in biology and German from the Uni-

versity of Kansas and he began graduate studies in Germany at the University of Bonn as a Fulbright Scholar. Upon receiving his Master of Science degree from Texas Tech University, Droge went on to earn a Ph.D. in physiology and biophys-ics from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He came to Park University with 19 years of experience in higher education as a faculty member and administrator, most recently as a professor of biology and dean of graduate studies and research.

Claude English enters his 14th year as Park University’s Director of Athlet-ics, serving in the role since January of 1996. English coached men’s basketball for 13 standout seasons before

retiring from coaching at the conclusion of the 2004-05 season, beginning his affiliation with Park athletics in the 1992-93 men’s basketball campaign. During English’s guidance as athletic director, Park University athletics has undergone drastic improvements. Women’s golf and men’s baseball have been added as intercollegiate sports since his appointment to A.D. In addition, English has overseen numerous facility improvements, such as Park soccer’s 1,500-seat Julian Field and the construction of the Breckon Sports Center. Under English’s watch as A.D., 144 students have earned All-America Scholar-Athlete honors, while 76 individuals were named athletic All-Ameri-cans. Additionally, Park has also won 45 conference championships under Eng-lish’s watch as A.D., and Pirate athletic programs have advanced to at least one NAIA national event in each of his previous 13 years leading the department. The winningest coach in Park men’s basketball history with a record of 182-207, English’s coaching tenure was highlighted by the Pirates’ run to the NAIA final four in 1997-98, which ended with a school-record mark of 27-8. Eng-lish was honored at the national tournament with the Charles A. Krigel Award for outstanding sportsmanship, while his team was awarded the Dr. James Naismith-Emil S. Liston Sportsmanship Award for the team recognized as most sportsmanlike at the tourney. After playing basketball for Christian College in Dallas, Texas, and the Uni-versity of Rhode Island, English was selected in the NBA draft by the Portland

Trail Blazers where he played the 1970-71 season. English also played in the Eastern Basketball Association for the Hartford Capitals, the affiliate team for the Philadelphia 76ers. In 1973-74, English won the Eastern Basketball Association Championship with the Capitals. He was a three-year captain at Hartford. He joined the coaching staff at the University of Rhode Island in 1972 where he remained for 12 years, including four seasons as the head coach from 1981-84. English was named Coach of the Year in the Atlantic 10 Conference in 1981. Overall, he owns a 227-277 career record in 17 seasons as a head coach.

CLAUDE W. ENGLISHDirector of Athletics14th Year (18th Year at Park)

Pat Fayard is in her 25th year at Park University, entering her seventh as the office manager for the de-partment of athletics. Fayard is responsible for coordinating team travel and overall budgetary items for the department, as well as serving as an administrative assistant for director of athletics, Claude English.

She also coordinates many of Park’s gameday operations, including conces-sion-stand management and student work-study employees. Fayard and her husband, Dennis, reside in Parkville, Mo.

Steve Wilson enters his third year as the Director of Sports Information at Park University, overseeing pub-licity and operational efforts for all 15 sports. Wilson is the primary media liaison for both women’s soccer and women’s volleyball in the fall, men’s basketball in the winter, and baseball and women’s golf in the spring.

He is also responsible for overseeing all publications and online efforts within the department, including www.parkathletics.com, the official Web site of Pirate athletics. Additionally, Wilson supervises game-day staff at all home events as well as other administrative duties within the Department of Athletics. He also serves as the play-by-play voice of the Pirates at select events. An active CoSIDA and NAIA-SIDA member, Wilson is involved in several na-tional committees, including serving as chair of the NAIA Statistical Committee in 2009-10. He is also involved in publications committees, serving as a contest coordinator of the NAIA-SIDA Women’s Basketball Brochure Contest as well as a judge in various CoSIDA competitions. A 2004 graduate of Kansas State University, Wilson began his career in sports information as a Graduate Assistant at Kansas Wesleyan University dur-ing the 2004-05 school year, assisting with the Coyote football, men’s basket-ball, baseball and women’s basketball programs. In 2005, he joined the athletic media relations staff at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, where he was the primary contact for women’s volleyball, women’s basketball and baseball, while also assisting with publicity efforts in the Bobcat football program. While at Texas State, Wilson also provided basketball and baseball play-by-play on KTSW-FM. Away from San Marcos, Wilson assisted on the game-day staffs of the 2005 United States Basketball League Championship, the 2006 NCAA Women’s Basketball Regional in San Antonio and the 2006 NCAA Base-ball Regional in Austin, Texas. During the 2005 football season, he also assisted the game-day efforts of the New Orleans Saints, who were relocated to San Antonio by Hurricane Katrina. Prior to his work in sports information, Wilson was a play-by-play voice and account manager for KSAL-AM in Salina, Kan., as well as a contributing writer and assistant editor for Rivals.com College Baseball. He received top honors in the student-intern play-by-play category by the Kansas Association of Broad-casters in 2003. Wilson and his wife, Sarah, reside in Roeland Park, Kan.

STEVE WILSONSports Information Director, 3rd Year

Tyler Price enters his second year as the Assistant Sports Information Director at Park. Price is the primary contact for both men’s soccer and cross country in the fall, women’s basketball, men’s volleyball and indoor track and field in the winter, as well as softball and out-door track and field in the spring.

A 2008 graduate of Kansas State University, Price spent three years in the Sports Information Department from 2005-08 as a Student Assistant. Along with assisting in the promotion of all 12 varsity sports at K-State, Price’s main responsibility was serving as the primary contact for the women’s eques-trian program. After graduation, Price joined the Sports Information staff at the National As-sociation of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). After a few months promoting the NAIA, Price made the trek a few miles north to Parkville. The Overland Park, Kan., native also worked in sports broadcasting early in his career, spending two summers working at KSHB-TV in Kansas City as an Associate Sports Producer for the 38 Sports Spot television program and all evening newscasts. Price is an avid Kansas City sports fan and enjoys watching all Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals and Kansas State football games. Price and his wife, Jenny, also a graduate of Kansas State, reside in Overland Park, Kan., with their daughter Maria.

TYLER PRICEAssistant Sports Information Director, 2nd Year

Michael Frey begins his seventh year as head ath-letic trainer at Park University, coming to the Pirates after a one-year stint as the head athletic trainer at Centennial High School in Peoria, Ariz. Frey owns a bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University in 1994, and he completed his master’s de-

gree in 2002 from the University of Kansas. A native of Silver Lake, Kan., and member of Silver Lake’s 1989 Class 3A state champion football team, Frey began his career in sports medicine as the Industrial Program Director at the Rehability Center in Kansas City, Kan., staying in that role from 1994 to 1998. In 1998, Frey landed his first position in a collegiate athletics setting, serving as athletic trainer at Avila University from 1998-2000. Frey returned to his alma mater in 2000, where he served as the Intramural Sports Medicine Director at Kansas State University until 2002, prior to going to Centennial High. Frey resides in Lee’s Summit, Mo., with his wife, Kelly, and two daughters Lorien and Natalie. He also has one son, Talin.

MICHAEL FREYHead Athletic Trainer, 7th Year

Darrell Cooper is entering his third season as as-sistant athletic trainer at Park University, coming to the Pirates after a one-year stint at Henderson State Univer-sity in Hot Springs, Ark. Cooper holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Akron, and he began his career as

a graduate assistant at his alma mater, working with the Zips’ football and track programs from 1998 to 2000. He has also worked for the Adirondack Icehawks of the United Hockey league, Iowa Central Community College and the University of Missouri-Rolla (now Missouri S&T), prior to coming to Park University. Cooper is also an in-structor for the American Red Cross’s Professional Rescuer Training and he is an accredited clinical instructor.

DARRELL COOPERAssistant Athletic Trainer, 4th Year

Frank Kyte began his first season with the Pirates in January 2010, bringing 34 years of experience to Park University, including 21 years in professional baseball. Kyte holds a bachelor’s degree in physical educa-tion from George Fox University and a master’s degree in physical education from Portland State.

He also completed graduate studies and was a graduate teaching fellow at the University of Oregon. His athletic training career in the collegiate ranks be-gan at his alma mater, George Fox, where he was both head athletic trainer (1975-1984) and associate professor (beginning in 1979). Kyte then moved on to the Kansas City Royals baseball organization after his post-graduate studies at Oregon, beginning in the 1989 season with the Royals’ Advanced-A and Short-Season-A clubs until 1992. From there, Kyte was an athletic trainer for the Royals AA and AAA teams from 1993 to 1998, and in 1999, he was named the organization’s rehabilita-tion coordinator, a position he held until 2002. In 2003, Kyte was named as-sistant Major League athletic trainer, working with the Royals Major League club through the 2009 season. He is an NATA certified athletic trainer and also holds a State of Missouri certification and American Red Cross CPR, AED and First-Aid certifications. Kyte and his wife Karol reside in Independence, Mo. They have two daugh-ters, Heather and Shannon.

Named after longtime Park University President Donald Breckon, the Breckon Sports Center was built in 2000 and houses the Park University athletic department offices. The 1,000-seat capacity arena in the west dome plays host to men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s volleyball games. The east dome serves as practice facility for not only the volleyball teams, but also is a year-round indoor home to the soccer, baseball and softball programs.

Park University’s training facilities for student-athletes includes a regulation track, which is located adjacent to Julian Field, a full weight room and cardio training facility located in the Pirate Fitness Center, as well as a sports medicine facility in the Pirate Fitness Center with three full-time, fully accredited athletic trainers and one certified personal trainer/campus wellness professional.

Park University’s outdoor athletics facilities include one of the NAIA’s premiere soccer facilities, Julian Field, as well as Comfort Field, which is home to Park’s baseball program, and the Park Softball Complex. Park’s soccer teams also train on a top-notch practice surface at Hemingway Field, located adjacent to the baseball facilities.



The home of Park baseball is Comfort Field, which became home to the Pirates in the 2001 season, a year into the program’s resurrection at Park University.

New in the 2009 season, approximately 500 bleacher seats line the back-stop, with additional seating room down both outfield lines and on the berm im-mediately behind home plate. Measuring 330 down both lines and 400 to dead center, Comfort Field boasts one of the finest playing surfaces for college baseball in the Midwest, maintained by Park University Athletics Field Supervisor Greg Degener. Comfort Field is adjacent to Hemmingway Field, which serves as the prac-tice and training facility for the Pirate soccer programs, located northeast of Breckon Sports Center and the heart of Park University’s Parkville campus. The facility is currently completing Phase I of a series of upgrades, which will also include Phases II and III in future seasons.

MEDIA SERVICES Pregame packets including notes, statistics, media guides and gameday programs will be available prior to the start of each doubleheader. Box scores are available between games and will be e-mailed on Park University’s athletics distribution list. Play-by-play reports are also available. All credentials are issued by the sports information office and can be re-

quested by calling sports information director Steve Wilson at (816) 584-6490.

INTERVIEWS Following home games, Park head coach Cary Lundy will remain in the dugout vicinity to answer any media questions, and players will also be available after a cooling off period following the game’s conclusion. Park’s locker room will remain closed at all times and interviews are not al-lowed during batting practice, in-and-out, or between games of a doubleheader, unless the requested player is the starting pitcher for game one.

TELEPHONES No telephone lines are available at Comfort Field. Broadcast outlets should make arrangements for cellular phone service to broadcast games.
