helping English learners realize their full potential... one student at a time
On behalf of Ballard & Tighe, I would like to welcome you to our 2010–2011product catalog. Our mission of “helping English learners realize their fullpotential … one student at a time” is our passion. And we’re proud to help youin meeting the needs and raising the academic achievement of your Englishlearners.
New for this school year are our IPT English and Spanish Oral and SpanishReading & Writing series of tests (pp. 46-52). All of these renormed tests havenew items and artwork. As with the previous editions of the IPT, the scoringprocess is accurate and easy. There are no subtests, no cumbersome rubrics, nonorm books to follow, and no complicated formulas to compute a student’sproficiency level.
New to our instructional product offering this year is a supplemental English orallanguage development tool, Frames for Fluency (pp. 20-21). Aligned to thechapter themes and goals in Carousel of IDEAS, this tool is designed todevelop oral proficiency through meaningful practice of important grammaticalforms that are embedded in key language functions. Frames for Fluency can beused as a stand-alone English language development tool or as a greatsupplement to Carousel.
We know school budgets are tight and districts across the nation are makingdifficult decisions about cutting valuable services to students in need. We don’twant the current financial uncertainty to preclude us from helping the Englishlearners you serve. At Ballard & Tighe, we want to help you in thisunprecedented time of financial uncertainty by offering you the ability to pay fordistrict-wide adoptions of Carousel of IDEAS or Champion of IDEAS overthree years (see pp. 2-3 for more details). Carousel of IDEAS (K-5) andChampion of IDEAS (6-12) are comprehensive and systematic English languagedevelopment programs that can help prepare your English learners foracademic success.
In May 2010, we entered into a partnership with Bridge Learning to market, promote, and distribute our materials to the greater Asian region. We areconfident that we can offer a substantive, rigorous product range to address theneeds of both elementary and secondary schools in Asia, particularly AmericanInternational Schools and International Baccalaureate programs, which havehigh academic standards requiring rigorous English language development.
As always, our educational consultants and associates are ready to provide youthe individualized service you deserve. We’re committed to supporting yourgoal of raising the academic achievement of your students. Together we canhelp English learners realize their full potential.

We offer a flexible payment plan to help you get them. At the beginning of year two, thedistrict pays the second installment of 30 percent, and thethird installment of 30 percent at the beginning of yearthree.
The Purchase Agreement automatically renews each yearunless the district terminates the agreement at the end ofyear one or year two and returns the materials to Ballard &Tighe.
*Purchase Agreement plan offered for district-wide adoptions only and for noless than $25,000.
We’re thinking outside the box …You choose our ELD programs because oftheir quality. We know educators choose Ballard & Tighe’s Englishlanguage development (ELD) programs because they areresearch-based, feature current methodology, and are easyto use. In short, they are the most effective, highest qualityELD programs available today. However, we also knowthat budgets are tight across the nation. Why offer districts a three-fiscal-year paymentplan?
We are committed to the education of Englishlanguage learners. Since Ballard & Tighe was founded in1976, we have dedicated ourselves to helping educateEnglish learners. We do not want the current financialuncertainties to keep you from getting the instructionalmaterials you need for your students.
We are committed to helping school districts workwithin their budgets. Some state laws prohibit districtsfrom financially obligating themselves for more than 12months. The Purchase Agreement does not breach thatlaw because it renews each year. At the end of each yearof the agreement, districts have the option of continuingwith the payment plan or not. Districts can terminate theagreement for any reason. Once the agreement isterminated, no additional monies are owed.
We are committed to developing the highest qualityELD programs on the market. We are so certain that theCarousel and Champion programs will help you raise theacademic achievement level of your English languagelearners that we can confidently offer this plan, secure inthe knowledge that once you see the effectiveness ofthese programs, you will not want to return them.
For more information about the purchase plan, pleasecontact customer service at 1-800-321-4332. We can answerquestions you have about this plan and how it might workfor your district.
… to make sure English learners have access to extraordinary
materials during an extraordinary time.

There are 319students in Bowie Junior High School andEnglish language learners make up 14% of thestudent population. Bowie Junior High earnedthe rating of Texas Education AgencyRecognized School.
How long have you been aneducator?I have been a teacher for 10 years and I haveworked with English language learners for nineof those years. I also serve as the at-riskcoordinator for Bowie Junior High.
What did you want to be when youwere a child?I always wanted to be a teacher. Most of myfamily is in education and they inspired me toalso become an educator.
What advice do you have for newteachers?Find a good, well-respected leader in the fieldto serve as your mentor. Establish a goodrapport with the parents of your Englishlanguage learners.
What do you like most aboutChampion of IDEAS?The Champion program works well for ourjunior high students and will continue withthem as they travel on to high school. It givesthem an opportunity to achieve and build theirconfidence. My students find that they areexcelling in a new language and transferringthat achievement to their other content areawork. The Champion of IDEAS program is veryeasy to use, whether you are a novice or aveteran. The layout of the lessons is designedto bring success for students regardless ofhow much or how little experience teachershave in working with English languagelearners.
What is your favorite Ballard & Tigheproduct?I love Champion of IDEAS because of theintegration of the literacy and language skills. Ilove how each set of lessons are scaffolded tobuild upward through the levels. Thiscurriculum is based on ELA standards andsupports our state’s Texas EssentialKnowledge and Skills (TEKS) very well. Mystudents love the different themes that arepresented in Champion of IDEAS.
