Dear Alumni/ae and Friends of Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School (CRCDS),

CRCDS transformative educational experience. Despite a sluggisheconomy, a fractured society and many other obstacles, you con-tinue to give your support. On behalf of the entire Board ofTrustees, I offer our sincere gratitude for the sacrifices you makethat help us continue to realize the mission at the core of ourbeloved CRCDS.

May 17th, 2011 marked a critical milestone in the life ofCRCDS—the election of Dr. Marvin A. McMickle as our 12thPresident. With a focus on success for CRCDS in the 21st century,Dr. McMickle’s leadership has already led to an improved profilefor the School locally and nationally, as well as to increased finan-cial support.

Most recently, Dr. McMickle and his wife Peggy made a sacrificialgift of $10,000 as a testimony to their belief in a successful futurefor CRCDS, and as a call to all of us to join them in making this

Dear Friends and Supporters of CRCDS,

It is my very great pleasure to greet you as the 12th President ofthis historic and vital seat of theological learning, discourse andreflection. I began my service on a part-time basis in July of2011 and began serving full-time in January of 2012. I must tellyou that this is an exciting time to be involved in theologicaleducation. CRCDS continues to focus on three signature areasof instruction: black church studies, women in ministry andgender studies. We continue to shape a curriculum and a com-munity of learning that gives shape to graduates that areprophetic, pastoral and scholarly. We reflect a wide variety ofdenominational and theological perspectives, allowing us toprovide a learning environment that accurately reflects the realworld into which our graduates will go forth to do ministry.

In the CommunityI have begun an aggressive schedule of preaching and speakingthroughout the Greater Rochester area and beyond in anattempt to elevate the profile of CRCDS, to attract new stu-dents and to tell our story in a way that allows us to gain newdonors and friends. We are getting positive coverage in the localnews media and are entering into some exciting program areaswith other groups that allow us to reach a wider audience andserve a wider constituency.

The 2010-2011 Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity SchoolAnnual Report provides us with an opportunity to list thepeople, churches and agencies that have been our financial sup-porters for the last academic year. I am deeply grateful to everyperson and congregation that includes CRCDS in their steward-ship efforts. While we are grateful for that support we aremindful that these funds come with a great responsibility to begood stewards of these resources. We are working hard tooperate on a "lean budget" that requires us to do more with lessin terms of personnel costs. We have a faculty and a staff thathave been down-sized over the years, but the core that remainsis efficient, productive and accountable.

Inauguration PlansI am pleased to announce the plans that are taking shape for myinauguration as President. The dates are October 16 and 17,2012. On the evening of October 16, the formal inaugurationwill take place and Dr. James Cone of Union Theological Semi-nary in New York City will give the inaugural lecture. On theafternoon of October 17, Dr. Emilie Townes of Yale DivinitySchool will lead a forum on race and religion in American poli-tics. That will be followed by a response from a panel consisting

of members from the Greater Rochester community, as well asJames Evans, Melanie May and David Kim of the CRCDSfaculty. On the evening of October 17, there will be a worshipservice at which Dr. H. Beecher Hicks, Jr., an alumnus, will bethe preacher.

On the HillThe inauguration is one of many signs of life and energy on ourcampus. The halls are buzzing with the sound of students. Thechapel is filled with the sounds of worship and praise. The refec-tory echoes the warm community that is so important for thespiritual formation of students, faculty and staff alike. We sharethe campus with other agencies, such as Ithaca College, theAmerican Cancer Society regional office and their residentialcenter for patients receiving cancer treatment locally, HopeLodge. This combination of people and programs makes “theHill” one of the most exciting places to be in Rochester.

Of course we are facing some real Challenges. We need toincrease our enrollment at the masters and doctoral level. Weneed to increase our capacity for distance learning and hybridcourses. We need to upgrade our technology so that students can

operate in a wireless environment anywhere in the building oron the grounds. All of this requires ongoing support from ouralumni/ae and friends. Let me use this as an opportunity tosolicit your support either as a steady supporter of CRCDS or asa first-time donor. There is a need for theological education thatis progressive in content and inclusive in terms of community.CRCDS is uniquely positioned to fill that role.

As President of CRCDS, I know I speak for everyone involvedin the day-to-day life of the School when I say thank you forthe help you have given across the years, and for what you willgive as we move confidently ahead together. We need not onlyyour gifts, but also your prayers. My wife Peggy and I lookforward to our ministry within this community.

I am mindful of the legacy I have inherited, but I am alsoexcited about the future that awaits us all!

The Tower Society promotes and recognizes leadership giving to CRCDS. Through their exemplary generosity the Tower Society members provide vital support for the School and set the standard for giving by others.
