 Welcome to the College Annual Review 2010/11 - a quick and concise round-up of some of the highlights from the last academic year.A multi-award winning education provider, Pembrokeshire College is proud of its achievements and those of its students. Without such dedicated and hard-working staff and students the College would not be as successful as it is today and it is that which we celebrate in our Annual Review.

Biology Olympiad CompetitionTen Pembrokeshire College A-Level Biology students competed in the British Biology Olympiad competition for a chance to be selected for a place on the team representing the UK at the International Biology Olympiad held in China.

The competition challenged and stimulated gifted students with an interest in Biology, expanding and extending their talents. The competition attracted 2,850 eager students from 337 schools across the UK. The College students performed well with Stefan Merrix being awarded Silver, Andrew Barrett gaining a Highly Commended, Nabila Ali Syeda achieving Bronze and Aaron McManamon, David Havard and Genevieve Gyseman all being commended.

welders from colleges across south Wales came together to compete for a place in the Welsh Championship Final.

First place went to Ian Harries, aged 20 from Haverfordwest, second place went to Neil Brace, aged 20 from Pembroke Dock, both employed by Mainport. Third place went to Stephen White, aged 21 from Milford Haven and fourth place was given

Carpenters with the X-FactorPembrokeshire College recently hosted a high-level carpentry ‘boot camp’ for arguably three of the top joiners/carpenters in the country. In an ‘X-Factor’ type competition, 12 regional winners of ‘WorldSkills’ who had previously won regional competitions around the country - then battled it out for a place in the squad of six - and that was cut to three to train to represent the UK at a skills ‘Olympics’ held in London in October 2011.

Classic car for ‘Huwmacher’ Pembrokeshire College’s motorsport students were overjoyed to see the car that they had prepared and looked after during the event, achieve its third consecutive class win on the classic Llysyfran Hill climb. The 1600cc Van Diemen racing car had been extensively rebuilt during the year by the students under the supervision of course lecturers Rob Gay, Alex Edwards and Huw Jones. ‘Huwmacher’ Jones also had the duty of driving the car during the event.

Competitors from all over the country came with a wide variety of cars to tackle the technically demanding 1,040 metre course. Extra interest for the event was an entry from Pembrokeshire’s own former two-time British rally champion Dai Llewellyn, however a damp and slippery course proved a challenge for the drivers, with many failing to stay on the narrow ribbon of tarmac.

A Scary Guy at CollegeThe Scary Guy continued his worldwide mission to eliminate anger, hate, violence and death with three guest talks at Pembrokeshire College. A larger than life character, at 6ft tall and weighing 20 stone, with his gold teeth, facial piercings and full body tattoo,the Scary Guy is anything but conventional. A former tattoo artist, The Scary Guy legally changed his name in 1998 and began on his worldwide mission to eliminate hatred and prejudice after a rival tattoo artist ran a full page advert in a local paper asking “Are you tired of dealing with scary guys with war

A-level Results Exceed the National AverageA-level students at Pembrokeshire College achieved outstanding exam results in 2010/11. The College’s overall pass rate for full-time students was 99%, of which 27% were A* or A grade and 79% were in the A-C category. 15.6% achieved grade A* - twice the national average. Mobile Technology to Help LearnersJanuary 2011 saw the launch of the pioneering mCommunity Project, led by Pembrokeshire College in collaboration with Gower College Swansea and the Telecommunications Software and Solutions Group (TSSG) based in the Waterford Institute of Technology, Ireland. The project aims to engage adults who are not in employment, education or training by using mobile technology to help establish positive social networks. mCommunity is also working with small businesses to pilot how technology can improve their business effectiveness. Hair Stylists Create WavesAspiring stylists at Pembrokeshire College created more than just waves when they staged their annual AHT UK Hairdressing Competition. Students were encouraged to let their imaginations run free resulting in some dramatic and stunning styles for the professional judges to view. The competition encompassed a number of themes which students had to interpret from a cut and blow dry through to ‘haute couture’ and a night at the theatre. The ‘haute couture’ competition, won by Juliette Graham, aged 18 from Neyland, saw her model, Hannah Snape, transformed with a look straight from the catwalk. Meanwhile the ‘total team look’ competition, based on a night at the theatre, was won by Melissa Watts, aged 16, from Haverfordwest, Kelly Matthews, aged 16, from Neyland and Genna Woodford, aged 17, from Johnston, who re-created the Lion King to stunning effect.

Top Uni’s for International Students Pembrokeshire College’s international students consistently gain high A-level results helping them to secure places at some of the UK’s top universities. Destinations this year included Imperial College London, Cardiff University and Cambridge University. Former student Riu Ku from China, recently graduated from Cambridge with a Chemical Engineering degree and returned to the College with his parents and future wife (also a former student) to show them where their happy journey started. Business Accolades for Top StudentsThe Pembrokeshire branch of the Federation for Small Business sponsored two awards to promote studies in business and engineering at Pembrokeshire College. A cash prize was awarded to outstanding students by their tutors and the award was presented by Andrew Phillips, Managing Director of Carreg Construction, during the graduation ceremony held at St Davids Cathedral. The winner of the Business, Leisure and Travel award went to Zoe Codd. Students set their Sights on BorneoEnthusiastic students from Pembrokeshire College will soon be travelling to the equatorial island of Borneo, in the South China Sea, to undertake environmental and wildlife activities and experience life in a tropical rainforest. With the trip scheduled for the summer of 2012, the students are now involved in an array of fundraising activities to pay for their expedition. Places on the Borneo Expedition were made available to any student enrolled at the College who was willing to commit to the project, spending time fundraising to pay for their place and help to organise the itinerary for this fantastic trip of a lifetime to the other side of the world.

New Energy Sector ProjectThanks to a joint initiative between Pembrokeshire College, Future Works at Pembrokeshire County Council and Job Centre Plus, a project was launched to boost local employment in the energy sector. Through the Pembrokeshire Engineering Construction Skills (PECS) project, it was hoped there would be an increase in the number of skilled
