Gardner-Webb University (GWU), located on 250 acres in Boiling Springs, N.C., is a private, four-year, NCAA Division I institution affi liated with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. GWU has been recognized as one of only 134 institutions in America on the John Templeton Foundation’s Honor Roll for Character-Building Colleges

GWU enrolls over 4,000 students from 33 states and 34 foreign countries in undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree programs. Small classes in a personal learning environment allow the university to feature a 15-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio. With increased national exposure and attention given to the institution’s academic programs and character building opportunities, the enrollment has grown over 60 percent in the last 10 years.

There are 45 major fi elds of study on the undergraduate level. Graduate programs such as the School of Divinity, the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program, and the Graduate School are gaining regional acclaim for numbers of students served and quality of programs exhibited. Gardner-Webb’s GOAL Program (Greater Opportunities for Adult Learners) operates on 17 satellite campuses around North Carolina for working adults who are seeking to complete their four-year degrees at night. Recent expansion efforts also have created two new modern facilities for off-campus students - GWU at Statesville and GWU at Charlotte.

Perhaps there is no greater time to observe the academic quality of Gardner-Webb University than right now. All of the necessary factors for academic excellence – faculty, students, resources, curriculum – are working in conjunction with one another to gain widespread acclaim from alumni, friends, trustees, the media and the community. Over 130 full-time faculty members comprise a group of educators at GWU being heralded as the "premiere class of instructors ever assembled at the University." Over 80 percent of the faculty hold a Ph.D. or equivalent, and many boast of well-documented activities in the business and professional worlds. With a student-to-faculty ratio of 15 to 1, Gardner-Webb is able to provide personal instruction to its students, who now number over 4,000, making Gardner-Webb the fifth-largest private institution in North Carolina. New technological features in our library enhance the learning experience for a higher quality student. The incoming freshman class this year averaged over 1020 on the SAT and a 3.5 GPA.

The soccer fi eld, formerly known as Varsity Field, was renamed the Greene-Harbison Field in 2007, as it has received many upgrades since the fi elds inception in 1990.

Prior to the 2007 season, a permanent press box was built (left) with a video purch on top for both the home and visiting teams to fi lm the games. Also prior to the 2007 season, permanent seating (center) was put in at midfi eld to allow the spectators to be right in the action of the games.

Prior to the 2005 season, Gardner-Webb erected a brand new scoreboard (right), adding to the game experience for all.

In 2004, four light standards were installed, allowing the Bulldogs to play home night games for the fi rst time in school history. The 2002, mobile bench covers were added, offering players from both teams protection from the elements.

GWU ADMINISTRATION

Dr. A. Frank Bonner, in his fi fth year as the president of Gardner-Webb University, took offi ce on May 2, 2005, and was inaugurated on April 6, 2006. Bonner is no stranger to Gardner-Webb, having been a part of the University family since 1987. A native of Greenville, S.C., Bonner graduated from Furman University in 1969, has a M.A. degree from the University of Georgia and earned a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a faculty member and Associate Dean at Anderson College in Anderson, S.C., prior to beginning his career in Boiling Springs as Vice President for Academic Affairs. In 1992, Bonner was promoted to provost and senior vice president at Gardner-Webb, a post he held until assuming his current role in 2005.

After a comprehensive, national search for the university’s new president, chairman of the presidential search committee and the board of trustees, Frank Beam, said, “We came to the conclusion that we had the most qualifi ed candidate right here at the university.” Bonner succeeded Dr. Frank Campbell, who served Gardner-Webb University as president from October, 2002 until June, 2005. Active in civic life and in the community, Bonner has served on the boards of the United Way, the YMCA, and Communities in Schools, and he serves on the Cleveland County Sports Commission. He is a past chairman of the Cleveland County Chamber, a past president of the Shelby Rotary Club, and a Sunday School teacher and deacon at First Baptist Church in Shelby. Bonner is also a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. During Bonner’s time as provost, Gardner-Webb emerged as a vibrant institution for higher learning, offi cially moving from college to university in 1993. The institution’s academic reputation has steadily improved during Bonner’s time in Boiling Springs, with a tremendous faculty and consistently evolving curriculum. Bonner is married to the former Florence “Flossie” Black of Chester, S.C., also a graduate of Furman University. They are parents of two adult daughters and four grandchildren.

GWU ADMINISTRATION

CHUCK

BURCH

Vice President

for

Athletics

Gardner-Webb alumnus Chuck Burch is in his 13th year as Vice President for Athletics and his 28th year in athletics administration. The Charlotte, N.C., native spearheaded the Bulldogs move into Division I athletics, which resulted in Gardner-Webb’s addition to the Big South Conference as an associate member for football in 2001, and GWU’s move to the Big South as a full member – which became official on July 1, 2008. Burch oversees all athletic operations at Gardner-Webb, including management and supervision of athletic programs, facilities and budgets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen across-the-board improvements in facilities and the addition of five new sports since arriving in 1997. A sixth sport, men’s swimming was added in 2007-08. Burch is also responsible for continued improvements in the quality and quantity of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions created to assist and enhance the entire department.GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic performance since Burch’s arrival, and the department has posted a combined GPA above 3.0 in each of the last two academic years. Gardner-Webb’s final year in the Atlantic Sun Conference was fruitful, with several notable wins and the usual high

number of strong academic performances by the Bulldogs’ student-athletes. GWU enjoyed its most successful athletics year as a Division I member in 2006-07. Gardner-Webb won its first Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Championship, unseating Belmont University for the title. The Bulldogs also finished third in the men’s and women’s combined sports standings – a very impressive effort in the race for the inaugural Bill Bibb Trophy. Gardner-Webb’s men’s soccer team captured the imagination of faces across Cleveland County during its run to the 2006 A-Sun Championship and the NCAA Tournament second round. National qualifiers in Track & Field, swimming and wrestling highlighted competitive success for the Bulldogs in 2006-2007. Burch, a graduate of Independence (N.C.) High in Charlotte, and former member of Gardner-Webb’s football team, spent 1991-1997 as Director of Athletics at Liberty (Va.) University, and was instrumental in a successful and well run department in Lynchburg as well. He also served Liberty as Associate Director of Athletics (1988-1990), Assistant Director of Athletics (1984-1988), Sports Information Director (1986-1988) and Assistant Director of Sports Information (1982-1984). After graduating from Gardner-Webb in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Burch, 52, earned his master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1982. His wife, Franki, holds a Ph.D. in Health Education from the University of Virginia, and is a member of the faculty at Gardner-Webb. The couple has three children, Travis, a recent graduate of Furman University, Danielle, a sophomore soccer player at Brevard (N.C.) College and Amy (15).

HEAD COACH 2009 GWU MEN’S SOCCER

www.gwusports.com 8 2009 GARDNERWEBB UNIVERSITY MEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

HEAD COACH

Head Men’s Soccer Coach Tony Setzer, one of the pillars of Gardner-Webb’s men’s soccer program during his career in Boiling Springs, is entering his 21st season as the Bulldogs’ head coach. The Bulldogs’ career victories leader with 147, Setzer has spearheaded the growth of soccer at Gardner-Webb University and in Cleveland County. With an overall record of 147-241-24, Setzer, the face of GWU Men’s Soccer, has spent his entire 20-year collegiate career as a head coach in Boiling Springs. Setzer has been vital in the Bulldogs success over three transitions, as GWU transitioned to the NCAA Division I in 2000-01, moved into the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2002-03 and then most recently moved into the Big South Conference in 2008. In the Bulldogs fi rst year in the Big South Conference, GWU fi nished third overall with a 5-3-0-conference record. Overall the Bulldogs fi nished the season 6-12-0, as again Setzer put together a tough slate, which included 11 road games, two of which came against ACC powerhouses Clemson and N.C. State. In 2007, the Bulldogs suffered a down year picking up only three wins on the season. However, Coach Setzer’s squad, which consisted of only three seniors and was comprised of mostly

newcomers, was coming of a championship season in 2006 and found themselves the hunted rather than the hunters. Adding to the pressure for the Bulldogs, it was its last season in the Atlantic Sun, putting an even larger target on the Bulldogs back in conference play. Setzer’s team had a superb season in 2006, reeling off a 5-1-1 A-Sun record and earning the No. 2 spot at the conference championship. Playing at Stetson University, his squad downed the host squad by a 2-1 score in the championship game, earning the school’s fi rst-ever bid to the NCAA Championship. Playing at UAB in the opening round, the Bulldogs scored a 1-1 tie and moved on to the second round due to a 3-1 margin in penalty kicks after the teams played two scoreless overtime periods. GWU fell by a 3-1 count to No. 9 Clemson in the second round, spoiling the team’s hope for a third-round match, and ending the Bulldogs stellar season. A total of six Bulldogs were honored by receiving A-Sun post-season awards and all-conference recognition at the conclusion of the season, including Setzer, who is not one for personal goals, being named the A-Sun Coach of the Year prior to the conference championship. Under his direction, Tyler Kettering garnered more saves than anyone to ever play in GWU and A-Sun history. After his collegiate days came to an end after the 2006 season, Kettering signed a professional contract to man the net for the Wilmington Hammerheads. Setzer’s 2005 Bulldogs put together a solid season as they fi nished 9-7-2 overall and improving their record by fi ve games

Page 11: 2009 Gardner-Webb Men's Soccer Guide

from the previous season. GWU started out the 2005 season 4-0-2 before suffering a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to the nationally ranked No. 17 Clemson Tigers. However, the Bulldogs would score their fi rst ever victories over East Carolina, Appalachian State, Winthrop, and Florida Atlantic. The Bulldogs jumped into the top-10 regionally for the fi rst time since moving to the Division I level, as Setzer’s 2005 squad was once ranked as high as 8th in the NSCAA/adidas South Region poll. Under Setzer in 2005, the Bulldogs had two individuals receive All-Conference honors, as senior Loren McLean was named to the Second Team All-Atlantic Sun Conference and rookie Dirk Dittrich earned a spot on the All-Freshmen Team. Setzer’s 2004 Bulldogs had several solid outings during a 4-15-0 campaign, seeing several near misses go in favor of the opposition. A total of seven matches were lost by just one goal, and three more close calls were lost, 2-0, by the Bulldogs. Perhaps the team’s most impressive effort came at No. 15 South Carolina as GWU got goals from Brian Wentzel and Darnell Caroll to lead the Gamecocks, only to see a late rally result in a 3-2 comeback win for the nationally-ranked foe. With Setzer’s guidance in 2004, keeper Tyler Kettering earned second-team All-Atlantic Sun Conference honors while recording a career-best 134 saves and a solid 1.93 goals against average. In 2003, Setzer’s bunch forged a 10-9 record, missing qualifying for the A-Sun Championship by just one game in the league standings. Setzer guided GWU to an incredible recovery from a winless 2002 season, and with an 8.5-game improvement in 2003, notched the nation’s largest turnaround. Setzer also directed the Bulldogs to the fi fth 10-win season in school history, and the fi rst at the Division I level. GWU was a serious contender every time it took the fi eld in 2003, knocking off Georgia State, then the No. 7 team in the region, at home, and playing eventual A-Sun champion UCF to a 2-1 loss in overtime. The Bulldogs also put a scare into national No. 5 Wake Forest in October, 2003, forging a 1-1 tie for most of the fi rst half before eventually falling 6-1. The 2003 season marked the fi rst time that Gardner-Webb placed players on the A-Sun All-Conference Team, with Sergio Lozano and Carlitos Ramirez both earning second team honors. Rookie Tyler Kettering also took home postseason league honors, landing a spot on the All-Freshmen Team. Senior Todd Ulrich was GWU’s President’s Senior Athletic Program Achievement Award winner, and was a fi rst-team Academic All-District III and third-team Academic All-American performer in the classroom. Gardner-Webb also put seven players on the A-Sun All-Academic Team. Tough schedules are nothing new to Setzer or his team, as the Bulldogs are noted for refusing to shy away from challenges. Over the past seven seasons, Gardner-Webb has played seven games against opponents ranked in the top 15 nationally, including top-ranked Wake Forest in 2002. Success is no stranger to Setzer either. In 1998, at the Division II level, Setzer directed the Bulldogs to their fi rst national top-25 ranking, as GWU reached as high as No. 21 in the Division II poll behind a balanced attack and strong defense. He has coached the top goalkeeper and three scorers in Gardner-

Webb history, both single-season and career, and has tutored an impressive 16 All-Americans during his tenure – including 11 Academic All-Americans. Former Gardner-Webb star forward Jerome Lee Yaw, the school’s career leader in goals and total points, became the fi rst student-athlete in Gardner-Webb University’s history to be named fi rst-team All-American and Academic All-American in the same season (1996). During Gardner-Webb’s time in the South Atlantic Conference, Setzer developed 28 All-Conference performers and fi ve All-South Region choices. GWU Hall of Fame member Dennis Puckerin was honored as SAC Player of the Year in 1990, while Lee Yaw earned that honor in 1995. Two players, Vince Bueno (1996) and Jurgen Wagner (1998) were named SAC Freshman of the Year under Setzer. Edwin Odugba (1994 and 1995) and Lee Yaw were named South Atlantic Conference First Union Scholar Athlete of the Year during their careers, also earning All-Conference honors during those seasons. Odugba also earned the SAC President’s Award in 1994 and 1995 as the league’s top male student-athlete, making him the only Gardner-Webb performer, in any sport, to earn the honor twice. Prior to joining the Gardner-Webb family, Setzer served as an assistant coach at The Citadel under Bill Barfi eld. Setzer earned his Master’s degree from The Citadel in 1988. A 1986 graduate of Lander (S.C.) University, Setzer was a standout goalkeeper for the annually powerful Senators and enjoyed a brief professional playing career with the Columbus Capitals of the APISL before heading to The Citadel. Setzer, who holds a USSF “A” License, is also the founder of the Runnin’ Bulldog Soccer Academy, and has been a driving force in the youth soccer movement in Cleveland County and, specifi cally, in Boiling Springs with the Greater Cleveland County Soccer Association. On most Saturdays, thousands of youth soccer players descend on Gardner-Webb University’s campus to compete in league and tournament matches. Setzer is married to the former Kristen Lott, a four-time All-Conference selection for the Gardner-Webb women’s program in the mid-1990s, and the program’s leader in goals with 49 and second leading career scorer with 113 points. The couple resides in Boiling Springs and has four daughters. Madison Faye will be six years old on Nov. 20. On March 20, 2007, the couple gave birth to triplets - Sydney Dianne, Morgan Jeanette and Cadence McRee.

SEASON OUTLOOK 2009 GWU MEN’S SOCCER

www.gwusports.com 12 2009 GARDNERWEBB UNIVERSITY MEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

SEASON OUTLOOK The Gardner-Webb men’s soccer team enters the 2009 season on a mission, a two-tiered mission of sorts in one, proving that its inaugural season in the Big South a year ago was not a fl uke and two to improve on its 2008 campaign that saw them fi nished third in the conference at 5-3 and 6-12 overall. After being ousted out of the 2008 Big South Conference Men’s Soccer Championship Tournament in the fi rst round by UNC Asheville, who the Bulldogs had beaten earlier in the season, Coach Setzer’s squad to improve and use the 2008 season as a growing experience. Experience is what the 2009 squad will lack, as the Bulldogs have 17 newcomers on the roster, including 13 freshmen. Outside of the freshmen class the remainder of the roster, which is comprised of two redshirt-seniors, a senior, eight juniors and nine sophomores, has game time experience and we’ll be looked to for both leadership and guidance in as the Bulldogs again look to make waves in the Big South Conference in 2009.

DEFENSE The defense appears to be the strong leg for the Bulldogs in 2009, as the core of the back line returns for Coach Setzer’s squad. Redshirt-senior Jordan Gaines leads a highly experience, a highly talented and a highly physical defensive unit for Coach Setzer in 2009, as Gaines has played in almost every game for the Bulldogs since redshirting in 2005. Fellow returners Sam Dowell and Julian Morris, as well as fellow six-footers and newcomers Jovan Ivanovich, Jon Ole Reinhardsen, Dennis Kennetz, Jr., Douglas Hurdle and Tyler Turner, should provide depth for the Bulldogs back line as all are physical players that will look to use both their size and skill effectively to keep its opponents off the ball. To bring a change to the defensive third, Coach Setzer has an experience player in senior Mark Webster that, along with sophomore Kevin Nolan and newcomer Josh Schultz, can provide quickness to a very big defensive unit.

MIDFIELD The midfi eld for the Bulldogs is very deep and should provide minutes for a number of different players throughout the season. Highlighted by returners Hefferon, Augruso and Asanin-Miroux, who all will see time in both the midfi eld and forward positions this season, the middle of the fi eld will be key in the Bulldogs success in 2009. Experience in the midfi eld will come by way of junior George Tasedan, who was a member of the 2006 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship team that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship Tournament, and sophomore transfer Richard Wall, who saw quality minutes last season in the midfi eld for Wingate University. Newcomers John Sargent and J.D. Kershaw, as well as Kennetz, should all see time in the midfi eld for the Bulldogs this season, and will be asked to contribute immediately when name is called.

SEASON OUTLOOKFORWARDS With the departure of fi ve of its top eight scorers from a year ago, the Bulldogs will be looking to a number of different players for goals in 2009. Redshirt-senior Gerard Hefferon, along with juniors Adam Augruso and Guy Mbanyamsig and sophomore Taylor Jordan will all be asked to pick up the offensive load in 2009, as the four combined to scored four goals last season as secondary options. Other front line support should come from junior transfer Romeo Kabanda, who was a second-team NJCAA All-American last year at Laurie County Community College, and from sophomore C.J. Wise, who brings size upfront for the Bulldogs with his 6-4 frame. Newcomers John Christie, Maxwell Dove, Zac Tigner, Eliel Delphonse and Jordan Day, along with junior returner Eric Asanin-Miroux, all provide depth at the forward position and will compete immediately for playing time.

GOALKEEPERS With the last two GWU goalkeepers in Tyler Kettering and Dane Geraci now on the sidelines as coaches, the Bulldogs turn to some new blood to man the net in 2009. Junior Trent Kozman, who started one game a year ago, and sophomore Scott Krotee, who played in two games in 2008, appear to be the front-runners for the position heading into the preseason. However, redshirt-freshman Andrew Robinson and newcomers Jaap Elekan and Colin Ashley should all have a shot at seeing some time in between the posts in 2009 as the job is open until one person stands out.

SCHEDULE Gardner-Webb is no stranger to a very challenging schedule and 2009 will prove to be no different as the Bulldogs open the year on the road at ACC powerhouse Clemson University (Sept. 1). The Bulldogs then open up its home schedule with games against Covenant College (Sept. 4) and Jacksonville (Sept. 6), playing the two games as a co-host of the Soccer For A Cure Classic. Coach Setzer’s squad then hits the road for a fi ve-match road trip, in which the Bulldogs will take on IPFW (Sept. 11), in Rock Hill, S.C., Mercer (Sept. 18), Georgia State (Sept. 20), before opening up its conference slate with road games at Presbyterian (Sept. 23) and Radford (Sept. 26). GWU then returns home to play back-to-back conference games against High Point (Sept. 30) and Winthrop (Oct. 3) before returning to the road to take on Coastal Carolina (Oct. 7) in Conway, S.C. The Bulldogs then step out of conference play to host Georgia Southern (Oct. 10) before hitting the road for games at VMI (Oct. 14) and at UNC Greensboro (Oct. 17). Gardner-Webb will wrap up its 2009 home schedule with games against Liberty (Oct. 20), UNC Asheville (Oct. 28) and Appalachian State (Oct. 31), before traveling just down the road to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on USC Upstate (Nov. 6) in the Atlantic Sun/Big South Border Battle for its regular season fi nale. The 2009 Big South Conference Men’s Soccer Championships will be held on November 11-14 in High Point, N.C.
