Dr. A. Frank Bonner, in his eighth year as the president of Gardner-Webb University, took office on May 2, 2005, and was inaugurated on April 6, 2006.

Bonner is no stranger to Gardner-Webb, having been a part of the University family since 1987.

In 1987, Bonner came to Gardner-Webb as Vice President for Academic Affairs. His role later evolved into Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, and then Provost and Senior Vice President. He was named President in May 2005 and took office on July 1.

Bonner has been heavily involved in accreditation work through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), serving on 31 accreditation com-mittees, including 22 as committee chair. He has also chaired four NCAA Division I Recertification visiting committees. Bonner currently serves on the Board of the SACS Commission on Colleges; he is Vice President of the Big South Conference, Vice Chair/Chair Elect of the International Association of Baptist Colleges and Universities, and a member of the Executive Committee of the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities.

While at Gardner-Webb, Bonner has remained active in civic affairs, currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Boy Scouts of America Piedmont Council. He is a past chair of the Cleveland County Chamber, a Rotary past President, a previous Paul Harris Fellow, and he has been a board member for numerous orga-nizations. He is a member of First Baptist Church, Shelby, where he teaches Sunday School and serves as a Deacon. After twenty-two years in the United States Army Reserve, Bonner retired at the rank of Colonel.

A native of Greenville, S.C., Bonner graduated from Furman University in 1969. Coincidentally, his major professor was Dr. Phil L. Elliott, son of the legendary president of Gardner-Webb from 1943 until 1961, Phillip Lovin Elliott. After Furman, Bonner earned the M.A. from the University of Georgia in 1971, and the Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1977. His specialty is Victorian literature, primarily the poetry of Alfred Tennyson, and eighteenth-century British literature, with a special interest in Jonathan Swift.

In 1974, Bonner began his academic career as a faculty member at Anderson University in Anderson, South Carolina. He was particularly active in civic life in Anderson, most notably as chairman of the Board of Trustees for Anderson County School District Five. Bonner was assigned various administrative responsibilities at Anderson and, immediately prior to coming to Gardner-Webb, was Associate Dean for Special Programs.

Bonner is married to Florence Dell (Flossie) Black of Chester, South Carolina, also a Furman graduate. She is a retired high school mathematics teacher. They have two daughters, Alison Bonner Dalton of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Florence Bonner Crawford of Fort Myers, Florida. The Bonners have several grandchildren.

Gardner-Webb alumnus Chuck Burch is in his 16th year as Vice President for Athletics and his 29th year in athletics administration.

The Charlotte, N.C., native spearheaded the Bulldogs move into Division I athletics, which resulted in Gardner-Webb’s addition to the Big South Conference as an associate member for football in 2001, and GWU’s move to the Big South as a full member – which became official on July 1, 2008.

Burch oversees all athletic operations at Gardner-Webb, including management and supervision of athletic programs, facilities and bud-gets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen across-the-board improvements in athletics facilities and the addition of five new sports since arriving in 1997. A sixth sport, men’s swimming, was added in 2007-08. Burch is also responsible for continued improvements in the quality and quantity of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions created to assist and enhance the entire department.

GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic perfor-mance since Burch’s arrival, and the department has posted a com-bined GPA above 3.0 in each of the last five academic years.

In 2009-2010, Gardner-Webb posted its highest finish in the annual Big South Conference Sasser Cup, taking No. 4 in the final standings of the all-sports race. The women’s basketball team captured its first Big South Tournament title, advancing to the first round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament. Two other teams – women’s soccer and baseball – advanced to the league tour-nament title game in their respective seasons as well.

Gardner-Webb’s final year in the Atlantic Sun Conference was fruitful, with several notable wins and the usual high number of strong academic performances by the Bulldogs’ student-athletes.

GWU enjoyed its most successful athletics year as a Division

I member in 2006-07. Gardner-Webb won its first Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Championship, unseating Belmont University for the title. The Bulldogs also finished third in the men’s and women’s combined sports standings – a very impressive effort in the race for the inaugural Bill Bibb Trophy.

Gardner-Webb’s men’s soccer team captured the imagination of fans across Cleveland County during its run to the 2006 A-Sun Championship and NCAA Tournament second round. National qualifi-ers in Track & Field, swimming and wrestling highlighted competitive success for the Bulldogs in 2006-2007.

Burch, a graduate of Independence (N.C.) High in Charlotte, and former member of Gardner-Webb’s football and tennis teams, spent 1991-1997 as Director of Athletics at Liberty (Va.) University, and was instrumental in a successful and well run department in Lynchburg as well. He also served Liberty as Associate Director of Athletics (1988-1990), Assistant Director of Athletics (1984-1988), Sports Information Director (1986-1988) and Assistant Director of Sports Information (1982-1984).

After graduating from Gardner-Webb in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Burch, 54, earned his master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1982.

His wife, Franki, holds a Ph.D. in Health Education from the University of Virginia, and is Associate Provost for Professional and Graduate Studies at Gardner-Webb. The couple has three children, Travis; Danielle, a 2012 graduate of Brevard College; and Amy, a freshman soccer player at High Point University.

Gardner-Webb head coach Chris Holtmann has quickly established him-self as the right choice to lead the Runnin’ Bulldogs, entering his third season at the helm. A strong tacti-cian and recruiter, his tre-mendous leadership and enthusiasm has injected energy and toughness into a tradition-rich program.Last season, Gardner-Webb again played one of the toughest non-confer-ence slates in the nation among mid-majors, and battled hard in each of

those contests – holding halftime leads at Butler and Wake Forest - and playing tough against a brutal stretch of opponents. Holtmann’s squad was sturdy again at home, forging a 9-4 mark in Paul Porter Arena. During his two seasons at the helm, Holtmann has seen the Runnin’ Bulldogs post 15 wins at home, taking advantage of a very enthusiastic home court advantage. In his first season, Holtmann directed the Runnin’ Bulldogs to a strong 6-4 start against a tough early season schedule – includ-ing a 78-70 win at Atlantic 10 member Charlotte in the season opener. Gardner-Webb finished with an 11-21 overall mark, but advanced to the league’s postsea-son tournament for the first time since 2008-2009. The record is somewhat deceiving, however, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs were highly competitive – losing eight games by three points or less, includ-ing five of those in Big South Conference play. Holtmann, 40, returned to Gardner-Webb after spending two seasons as the lead assistant at Ohio University. In that role, he was instrumental in helping the Bobcats win the 2010 Mid-American Conference Tournament in March and to an upset of No. 3 seed Georgetown in the open-ing round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament. That win was the first in the NCAA Tournament for Ohio since 1983.

Holtmann is the fifth head coach in the 42-year senior college history of Gardner-Webb men’s basketball. The time to take over a program of his own arrived after years of hard work for Holtmann. He has served for 12 seasons as a coach in the college ranks, developing a strong reputation as an excellent tacti-cian – particularly on the defensive end of the floor – and a relentless recruiter. During his last 10 seasons on the bench, Holtmann has been a part of five conference championships. During Holtmann’s time at Ohio, he was a key figure in securing the top recruiting classes in the Mid-American Conference in each of his seasons with the school according to ESPN.com, including 2010 MAC Freshman of the Year D.J. Cooper. In 2009-2010, Ohio led the Mid-American Conference in scoring offense (74.7 ppg) and also led the league in assist/turnover ratio and defensive rebounding – two statistical categories Holtmann places extreme importance in. Holtmann is no stranger to Gardner-Webb basketball. He spent five seasons as an assistant at GWU from 2003-2008, and was the program’s Associate Head Coach in four of those seasons, proving to be a major asset in some of the program’s most notable basketball moments. Under Holtmann’s guidance, the Runnin’ Bulldogs experienced a strong defensive surge, leading the Atlantic Sun Conference in three-point field goal defense in 2007-08 and ranking second in overall field

27

goal defense in 2007-08 and 2004-05. During his time on the bench in Boiling Springs, Gardner-Webb pulled off memorable upsets of East Carolina (2004, 2005), Minnesota (2005) and No. 20 Kentucky (2007), and captured the Atlantic Sun Conference’s regular season crown in 2004-05. GWU also advanced to the league’s title game that season, going 18-12 against a difficult regular season schedule. Holtmann’s recruiting efforts helped produce some of the most notable talent for Gardner-Webb in the Division I era, including a pair of recruiting classes ranked in the national top-100 by Hoop Scoop. The most recent of those top-100 classes included 2008 All-American and Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year Thomas Sanders. During Sanders’ senior season, the Sugarland, Texas, native averaged 18.0 points, 10.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game, finish-ing third nationally with 20 double-doubles on the season. Sanders was the first GWU player to average a season double-double since Stan Easterling in 1998. Holtmann also recruited 2009 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America guard Aaron Linn and 2008 Atlantic Sun Conference Freshman of the Year Nate Blank to Boiling Springs. Tim Jennings, another dynamic guard recruited by Holtmann, was the Atlantic Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Year in both 2004-05 and 2005-06 and is playing professionally in South America. Jennings was a key cog in teams that combined to win 35 games in two seasons (2004-2006).

Prior to his first action in Boiling Springs, Holtmann worked under his mentor, Coach Paul Patterson, as top assistant and recruiting coordi-nator at Taylor University – his alma mater. The Trojans won consecu-tive conference titles and won at least 25 games in each of Holtmann’s final two seasons on the bench. Those teams finished ranked eighth and 13th in the NAIA national polls, respectively. Holtmann spent the 1997-98 season as a graduate assistant at Taylor – his first coaching position – before spending one season as a full-time assistant at Geneva (Pa.) College. The Nicholasville, Ky., native was an NAIA All-America selec-tion at guard under Coach Patterson in 1994, leading Taylor to a 29-5 record, a No. 1 national ranking and a spot in the NAIA National Tournament. Holtmann spent his high school days starring on the hardwood at Jessamine County (Ky.) High. He earned a degree in psy-chology from Taylor in 1994 and a Master’s in athletic administration from Ball State in 2000. He and his wife, the former Lori Bedi, have one daughter, Nora Jane, born May 19, 2010.

WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT HOLTMANN

HEAD COACHES

JOHN GROCE, HEAD COACH, UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS“Gardner-Webb has hired an exceptional coach but an even better person. He understands what it takes to build a successful basketball program and winning culture – both on and off the court. The Ohio basketball family is very excited for Chris and his family to have such a special opportunity.”

PAUL PATTERSON, HEAD COACH, TAYLOR UNIVERSITY (NAIA HALL OF FAMER)“I am excited for both Chris Holtmann and Gardner-Webb University. Chris is a bright, energetic, tireless worker who has been a high achiever his entire career. I would expect to see the same from him in his leadership at Gardner- Webb. His teams will be hard working, well prepared , and hard to play against every night. This is a good day for Gardner-Webb University.”

BRAD STEVENS, HEAD COACH, BUTLER UNIVERSITY“Chris is a great person and coach. His experience, both in coaching and at Gardner-Webb, will help the program fl ourish under his direction.”

NATIONAL MEDIA

JEFF GOODMAN, CBS SPORTS SENIOR BASKETBALL WRITER“Chris Holtmann is one of the rising young coaches in the game today. He’s a guy who just fl at-out gets it. He has a tremendous work ethic, connects with his players, can recruit and also knows the game. There just aren’t a lot of guys in the business who have that type of versatility. Just look at the success Gardner-Webb had when he was on staff - and then check out what Ohio University did this past season. It’s no coincidence that Chris has been an integral part of both situations.”

DAVE TELEP, NATIONAL RECRUITING DIRECTOR, ESPN“I think Gardner-Webb caught Chris on the way up. He’s a grinder who knows his way around our state and has always done a good job with his evaluations. They don’t get after it much harder than Chris Holtmann.”

Jay McAuley enters his third season as an assistant coach with the Runnin’ Bulldogs men’s basketball pro-gram, and has a proven track record of success as an assistant in the Division I ranks. McAuley joined the GWU fam-ily after spending the previous two seasons at nearby Wofford College. In his two seasons

with the Terriers, McAuley helped the squad to the its two most successful years at the Division I level – which included 42 wins, the 2010 Southern Conference regular season and tournament titles and a near upset of Wisconsin in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Prior to joining the Wofford staff in 2008, McAuley spent one season as a graduate manager at the University of Georgia, handling film exchange, video editing and scouting report preparation. The Marietta, Ga., native played four seasons for the Bulldogs in Athens as a walk-on, earning his roster spot through open tryouts. As a junior, he saw action in 17 games with starts against Auburn and Clemson. McAuley was named co-captain as a senior. McAuley earned a bachelor’s degree in business education from Georgia in 2006 and a master’s degree in physical education in 2008. Mike Netti enters his third season on Chris Holtmann’s staff at Gardner-Webb, but will be in his eighth season overall with the program. During that time he has developed a strong reputation as a high-energy member of the staff – both on the floor and the recruiting trail. Netti rejoined the Gardner-Webb

program in 2010 after serving for two years as head coach at Lackawanna (Pa.) College in the junior college ranks. He directed Lackawanna to 43 wins in his two seasons as head coach, including a 25-7 mark in 2008-09.

Two of his players with the Falcons went on to earn NJCAA Division II All-America honors and one went on to sign with a Big East Conference program. The Liverpool, N.Y., native spent four seasons as an assistant at Gardner-Webb – from 2002-2006 – helping the Runnin’ Bulldogs to two of the best years at the Division I level. He was on the bench for the squad’s 2004-2005 Atlantic Sun Conference regular season title and saw the ‘Dogs win 35 games between 2004-2006, including a pair of wins over East Carolina and an upset of Minnesota. He was instrumental in the development of two-time Atlantic Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Year Tim Jennings and a pair of recruiting classes that were ranked No. 1 in the league by Hoop Scoop. Netti is a 2002 graduate of Syracuse University. Netti played basketball at Division III Alvernia College in Reading, Pa., where he was a two-time varsity Letter-winner. In 2000, Alvernia won the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Division III National Tournament. During his time at Alvernia, Netti was also the team’s representative on the NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Takayo Siddle enters his third season as an assistant coach with the Gardner-Webb men’s bas-ketball program.

Siddle joined the staff in 2010 after spending one season as an assistant coach with the post-graduate team at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatam, Va. – his-

torically one of the most successful prep school programs in the nation. Serving under Hargrave head coach and current University of Louisville assi-stat coach Kevin Keatts last season, Siddle helped the Tigers to another extremely suc-cessful campaign that saw 12 players sign NCAA Division I scholarships – including five who will play in either the ACC, SEC, Big East or Big Ten next season as freshmen. Siddle is no stranger to Boiling Springs, N.C., having played four seasons with the Runnin’ Bulldogs before graduating in 2009. As a freshman, Siddle was a key part of teams that upset Minnesota and East Carolina on the road and that took defend-ing national champion North Carolina to the final buzzer. As a junior, Siddle helped Gardner-Webb upset No. 20 Kentucky in Rupp Arena and advance to the final four of the 2007 2K Sports College Hoops Classic in Madison Square Garden. Siddle played in 32 games that season, averaging 5.5 points for a team that won 16 games. The Eden, N.C., native started all 30 games for the Runnin’ Bulldogs as a sopho-more, averaging a career-best 8.6 points per game and dishing off 104 assists. He played in 21 games as a freshman, and finished his career with 114 games played in four

seasons. Siddle’s brightest moment in Boiling Springs came in a 95-90, double overtime win vs. Liberty in Paul Porter Arena – when he scored 12 of his career-high 18 points in the two overtime periods to key the victory. Siddle hit a three with 10.0 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime, then scored a four points in a five-second flurry at the end of the first overtime to force a final five minutes of play. Two of those game-saving points came on a 17-foot leaner after a stolen inbounds pass with just one second on the clock. Siddle played one postgraduate season at Hargrave Military Academy under Coach Keatts before beginning his playing career at Gardner-Webb and was part of a very successful N.C. Gaters AAU program during his prep career.
