ABSTRACT
Chulalongkorn University Student Chapter of SPIE (Society of Photographic
Instrumentation Engineers) was established in December, 2008 by an effort of undergraduate
students in the field of Nano-Engineering who interested in Optics and Photonics. The
purpose of the student chapter is to promote and disseminate the fundamental knowledge and
application of Optics and Photonics to the community and advance an interdisciplinary
approach to the science and application of light.. The important officers of the student
chapter are advisor, board of directors, and managers. The board of directors consists of
President, Vice-president, Treasurer, and Secretary. The managers are Public Relation (PR)
manager, Lab manager, Outreach manger, Research manager, Sponsor & Fund raising
manager, Guest speaker manager, Webmaster, and News update manager. In academic year
2009, 53 undergraduate students joined the student chapter. Most of the students are junior
and senior Nano-Engineering students, and a few of them are senior ICE students.
Chulalongkorn University Student Chapter of SPIE obtains semi-annually funding from
SPIE. During academic year 2009, the activities of the student chapter are as follows: 1. Fund
raising activity on graduation days, “Graduation Stereogram”, 2. Special lecture by Dr.
Robert P. Breault from Breault Research Organization (BRO), AZ, USA, 3. SPIE Student
Chapter Leadership annual meeting in San Jose, CA, USA, 4. Outreach activity, “SPIE
Roadshow” at needy school in Pathumthani, 5. Optics day, an open house activity, 6. End of
Year Thank you party, for showing gratitude to SPIE members who have contributed to our
student chapter. The Student Chapter’s finance is summarized in t he end of the report.

CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Introduction
At the frontier of both scientific and engineering research, optics and photonics stand
exceptionally promising to make new breakthroughs. Besides the research, useful
technologies ranging from common fluorescent light bulbs to CDs and DVDs to state-of-the-
art electronic devices are the creations of optics and photonics. Such applications would
never happen without the insight into the behavior of light.
A group of students in the Nano Engineering program, International School of
Engineering (ISE), Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University interested in optics and
photonics have already founded student chapters under two professional societies, the Society
of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) and the Society of Photo-Optical
Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) on December 2007. The ultimate goal of both chapters is to
initiate and promote the study of optics and photonics amongst our fellow students as well as
the local communities.
We commit ourselves to provide our fellow students and the local communities with
the knowledge regarding optics and photonics, including the basic phenomena of light, such
as diffraction and interference, and its application, such as lasers and optical communication.
One of the expected results is that the target groups admire the significance of this science,
understand how the phenomena of light are exploited and are able to utilize the technology
suitably. In addition, our activities could initiate interest in those who get involved and lead
to their further study.

CHAPTER 3 GRADUATION STEREOGRAM
3.1 Details of the activity:

3.2 Description of the activity:
During 9th -10th
3.3 The number of participants who attended the activity, beyond those directly
involved:
July, 2009, our university, Chulalongkorn University, held the
“Graduation Ceremony of Academic Year 2008” for the graduating seniors. Our student
chapter of SPIE saw a great opportunity to promote and raise fund for the chapter. We
organized a booth for selling the ready-made products, stereoscopic photographs with pairs of
3D eyeglasses. The photos of nine prominent landmarks in the campus were taken by the
chapter members. Approximately 200 of them were produced. They were sold in packages of
4 and 9 photos. In addition, beverages including soft drink and drinking water were also sold
at the booth.

3.4What the participants gained from the activity and the overall response:
For student chapter of SPIE’s member, the participants could learn to cooperate with
others as teamwork, apply scientific and engineering skills in making of the products i.e.
stereographic photographs. Moreover, they could learn to manage the given resources i.e.
financial, human, equipments. For the participants beyond those directly involved, proving
them with optics-related stuffs would trigger their interest in optics or, at least, provide them
the idea on what optics can be used to create fabulous stuffs through selling the stereogram.
Most of the participants enjoyed working and participating in this activity.
3.5 How did your Chapter benefit from this activity:
The “Graduation Stereogram” was the first step for promoting our student chapter of
SPIE in academic year 2009.Participants could notice our chapter when they came to buy our

products. Moreover, cooperating with others as teamwork let us know more about our
members and management system which will be benefit for future activities. In addition,
selling stereoscopic photographs along with beverages would raise our chapter’s fund for
future activities. Nonetheless, the remaining stereoscopic photographs could be used in other
activity i.e. educational outreach activities as another way to promote the chapter
3.6 Problems the group encountered in organizing the activity:
Since this is our first time in the chapter promotion activity, we could not predict how
many participants would buy the stereographic photographs. Stereograms were harder to sell
compared with beverages i.e. soft drink and drinking water. In addition, due to the fact that
the activity was prepared during school break, most of the students also had their own
activity. Hence arranging the meetings and preparing the activity were turbulent.
3.7 How was the activity publicized:
As stated earlier, providing people with optics-related stuffs of the prominent
landmarks in the campus would trigger their interest in optics and, hopefully, might make
them tell others about our products i.e. where they from, who make them, what are they
about. Most of the participants would know our chapter by the time they bought the products.
3.8 How the activity could have been improved:
We may add value to our stereoscopic photographs by packaging them i.e. enclose the
stereograms with luxurious envelopes and sell them in different combination set of 4 photos.
The photographs may be taken in more professional ways and in different views i.e.
concluding the dawn, day, dusk, and night scenes of the campus. In addition, basic principles
regarding stereoscopic image may be printed on the backside on the photographs which
would be appropriate not only for the students but also their younger brothers and/or sisters.

On 31th August, 2009, Dr.Robert P. Breault, founder and CEO of Breault Research
Organization, Inc.(BRO),Co-Chairman of the Arizona Optics Industry visited our SPIE
student chapter together with the OSA members to give a special lecture on the topic of "The
Business of Optics Today and in the Next Ten Years”.

5.3 Who was your target audience?
Upper primary school students
5.4 How did you market this program/event?
Three sets of Optic suitcases were requested from Optical Society of America
Rochester Local Section. They were used as major tools for demonstrating optical
experiments. Participants were allowed to take the take-home theme packets for playing with
their friends and family. Moreover, to make this event even more memorable, 4 student-made
optical microscopes were given to the school for teaching and learning science. The
microscopes have the logo of Chulalongkorn University Student Chapter of SPIE, SPIE, and
Photonic Technology Laboratory (PTL) at National Electronics and Computer Technology
Center (NECTEC), Thailand.
5.5 How many years have this program/event taken place?

5.6 Did this program/event achieve the expected result? Why or why not?

The program successfully achieved the expected result.
5.7 What feedback did you receive from the participants?
The participants enjoyed the activity very much. During the activity period, they were
astonished by the equipments from the Optic Suitcase such as Rainbow PeepholeTM
, Magic
Stripe, and Magic Patch. They said thank you to us for arranging both enjoyable and
knowledgeable activity.
5.8 Additional Feedback:
Our chapter’s members were very happy about the outcome and the effort in
preparing the activity. The activity was different from the proposal such as the three sets of
Optic Suitcases were used in the show, most of the grant was used for building 4 optical
microscopes, the date of the activity was postponed from 1st September, 2009 to 20th
January,
2010 and the number of school was changed from three to one. However, the overall activity
was very successful

CHAPTER 6 OPTICS DAY
6.1 Details of the activity:

6.2 Description of the activity:

Chulalongkorn University
Undergraduate Engineering students were invited to visit our Optics laboratory.
Chapter members’ projects were presented to the participants both the posters and physical
samples. Three optical experiments, “Filtering in Frequency Domain”, “Invisible by Prisms”
“3D stereograms” were shown. Fundamental theories of the experiments along with working
principles were explained. Telescope kits provided by OSA were also used to explain its
working principle and assembly steps. The souvenirs with SPIE&OSA student chapter logo,
SPIE brochure, and 5 stereogram of Chulalongkorn University’s famous landmarks along
with 3D glasses were given to the visitors. Participants were encouraged to join our Student
Chapter

6.4 What the participants gained from the activity and the overall response:
For Student Chapter of SPIE’s member, the participants could learn to apply scientific
and engineering skills in arranging an exhibition. Moreover, they could learn to manage the
given resources i.e. financial, human, and equipments. The visitor could gain some basic
knowledge about optics via simple explanation and direct experience from the optical
experiments. They might realize the significance of optics and its applications in our daily
life. This event could inspire them the interesting side of science, especially in optics. Also,
the SPIE Chulalongkorn student chapter will be more well-known by Faculty of Engineering,
Chulalongkorn University.

6.5 How did your Chapter benefit from this activity:
The “Optics Day” was a major step for promoting our student chapter of SPIE to
Faculty of Engineering’s students. Not only students who take class in Optics, but also the
students from other discipline such as Automotive engineering, and Aerospace engineering
were interested in Optics. Participants could notice our chapter when they join this event. 18
more members were recruited, and the current chapter members could present their optics-
related project through the exhibition. Moreover, cooperating with others as teamwork let us
know more about our members and management system.
6.6 How was the activity publicized:
The announcement about the event was done by providing the poster containing the
details of the event to the International School of Engineering (ISE) main website to make the
public announcement. The posters were also attached to the billboards and in front of the
Optics Laboratory. E-mails about the event and the poster were distributed to the students,
and they were encouraged to forward to their friends. At the end of the event, the souvenirs of
our chapter were given to the participants.
6.7 How the activity could have been improved:

CHAPTER 7: END OF YEAR THANK YOU PARTY
7.1 Details of the activity:

7.2 Description of the activity:
The purpose of this activity was to show gratitude towards our chapter members and others who supported the chapter and assist in the any activity held during the past year by providing a party with foods and beverages. This activity also provided the opportunities to welcome new members into the SPIE family and for them to meet the newly elected committee officers. Moreover, it included presentation of the past achievement and future ventures to all the members. About 33 students were recruited as new members of our student chapter.

Participants, especially the current officers and members, were rewarded after a year of effort and strong participation. The party brought a closer relationship among the members. New members and newly elected officers had a chance to know the current members. Moreover, every member enjoyed the party very well.
How did your Chapter benefit from this activity:
A closer relationship between Chulalongkorn University Student Chapter of SPIE’s members was enhanced. New members had a chance to know previous activities done by current members which encouraged them to participate effectively in the next year activities. Significantly, the importance and existence of the Student Chapter was realized and prolonged.
How was the activity publicized:
Current and new members could tell their friends about the Thank you party arranged by the Student Chapter of SPIE. This might encouraged their friends to join our chapter.
