2001 LADY RAILSPLITTERSEASON OUTLOOK

LADY RAILSPLITTERS LOOK FOR THE RIGHT MIX IN 2001 After losing five senior starters to graduation including four-year starter and Team MVP Andrea Goller,as well as Stacey Janetos who has since signed to play professionally in Germany, the Lady Railsplitters willlook for someone to step up and establish themselves in hopes of getting back to the GSC Championship.According to Coach Winterberger, there are about five or six players who have the potential to be impactplayers. “We had an up and down season last fall, but we were starting five or six freshmen almost everymatch. I think the girls are more acquainted with each others style of play and that will reflect in our playthis fall.” Senior Gretchen Dever will provide a dangerous presence up top and will be going for her thirdnomination to the All-South Region squad. Last season’s leading scorer Aubrei Rumbaugh, has thepotential to be one of the premier forwards in the GSC if she remains fit and healthy. Also returning up topwill be sophomore Emily Davis (Dunedin, Florida). With a dangerous shot and a good knowledge of thegame, learning to be opportunistic could be the key to her having a great season. Newcomers KatieFennell (Knoxville, Tennessee) and Cindy Campbell (Cape Coral, Florida) will compete immediately forstarting positions as well. “We will again be a young team, but I think we will be a smarter team”, saysWinterberger. All of these individuals combined could be the best forward line since Erin Alexander andKilee Novak from the 1997 GSC Championship team.

Defense: Last season we had a work in progress so to speak in that we were trying many different players atcertain positions looking for the right mix. After a good spring season, many of the questions concerningwho would be able to play in the back have been answered. Newcomer Katie Fennell will compete withJen Haggerty (Hendersonville, Tennessee) for the goalkeeping responsibilities. Senior Tri-Captain AmyBallman (Cincinnati, Ohio) will return for her final season. Amy has excellent timing and has the ability tomark players out of the game. She will be asked to play a big role this year in solidifying our defense.Sophomore Tri-Captain, Jenny Lombardo (Cape Coral, Florida), will anchor the defense at the center backposition. Lombardo has shown a dramatic work rate and attitude in the off-season and is the first sopho-more captain in LMU history. Joining Lombardo in the back is sophomore Zaiden Rodriguez (Cape Coral,Florida). Rodriguez and Lombardo compliment each other very well. They are both very quick and techni-cally sound. Having Zaiden and Jenny back there gives us the option of going with three in the back, whichwill allow for more options and chances on the offensive end of the field.

Midfield: With the absence of Janetos and three-year starter Tara Marchment in the central midfield, our interiorpresence will have to be rebuilt. Two-year starter and Tri-Captain Elizabeth duQuesnay (Toronto,Ontario, Canada) will be asked to play a big role this fall. Liz has the skill and demeanor to provide aconfident presence in the midfield. This will be the first season that she will enter healthy and she shouldcontribute heavily to the Lady Railsplitter’s success. Sophomore Randi Timmons (Piedmont, Oklahoma)and newcomer Cindy Campbell will compete for positions as well. Randi is a player who could make abig splash this season. She is probably the best technical player on the team and had an outstanding springseason. Junior Katy Schumann (Jefferson City, Tennessee) will compete for time in the middle as well.On the flanks will be sophomore Kate Sherwood (Knoxville, Tennessee) and Jaclyn Dombrowski(Pickerington, Ohio). Kate has the ability to play at the level needed for production on the flank and cantake defenders on one -vs-one with success. Jaclyn will be asked to step into a role she is fairly familiarwith. She played in 17 matches as a freshman.

MEET THE 2001 LADY RAILSPLITTERS # 00/21 Katie Fennell...............................................

5’10” Freshman Goal Keeper Knoxville, Tennessee

Katie joins the LMU Soccer program after a successfull career at Bearden HighSchool. Fennell was named First Team All-District three consecutive years andSecond Team All- District once during her prep career at the Goalkeeperposition. In addition to playing soccer at Bearden, Katie was also a member ofthe softball and basketball teams. “Katie is a complete athlete. Not only did she

compete in three different sports in high school, but she was a standout in all of them. Her size andcoordination will allow her to compete right away for the starting position in net. Katie has experienceplaying in the field as well, so we can utilize her skills in a variety of ways.”

Jennifer Haggerty # 1 Freshman Season: During her freshman season as a Lady Railsplitter, Jenearned experience behind former Lady Railsplitter Cindy Winterberger. While hertime was limited in 1999, the LMU women made it to the GSC Championshipmatch, where they lost in double overtime to the University of West Florida.Sophomore Season: While the Lady Railsplitters were in somewhat of arebuilding stage last season, Haggerty started in every match recording four

shutouts and capturing 83 saves enroute to the Lady Railsplitters 8-11 season record. This year Haggertywill compete with Katie Fennell for the starting role in the net. Defensively, the Lady Railsplitters will needto be extremely sound, as they are limited in their number of reserve players.Coach’s Comments: “Jen’s work ethic is one of the best on this squad. Her dedication to improvement iswhat sets her apart from others on the team. Jen’s experience and knowledge of the game will benefit theteam, especially teammate Katie Fennell, who will join Haggerty at the goalkeeper position.”

MEET THE 2001 LADY RAILSPLITTERS # 2 Kate Sherwood...............................................5’7” Sophomore Midfield Knoxville, Tennessee

Freshman Season: Kate came to the Lady Railsplitter program last seasonas a freshman. While her playing time was limited early in the season, she playedin every match for the LMU women and proved to be a valuable asset to theLady Railsplitter’s rotation. Kate saw time in a variety of positions last season. Ifeel we can narrow down her position to that of a flank player, but Kate also has

the ability to be a tenacious defender. She will play an instrumental role in our success this season.Coach’s Comments: Kate is deceptively quick and has the ability to control the ball well at speed.Once she develops the confidence to take people on on a regular basis, she will be very dangerous.

Zaiden Rodriguez # 3 Freshman Season: More commonly known as “Sly” to her teammates andthe LMU campus community, Zaiden played in every match as a freshman andstarted all but one. Sly is very quick and will be asked to help out more in adefensive position this fall. Sly has the stamina and physical fitness to play 90minutes and will be an asset in the back for us.Coach’s Comments: The thing about Sly that I like best is that she is extremely

tough. There were several times last season that she was matched up against players much bigger thanher but she would not back down from anyone. There is something inside her that will not allow her togive up and as a coach that is all you can ask.

MEET THE 2001 LADY RAILSPLITTERS # 5 Emily Davis...............................................5’7” Sophomore Forward Dunedin, Florida

Freshman Season: Scored her biggest goal of the season against G.S.C. opponentHarding University. Scored the game winning goal with less than 10 minutes left inthe game. Scored 4 goals and 5 assists totaling 13 points on the season. Tied for2nd on the team with game winning goals ( 2).Coach’s Comments: “Emily has an excellent attitude and wants to learn. She worked very hard in the offseason addressing the areas of her game that

needed attention. She has a lethal shot and is not hesitant to pull the trigger. She tallied 53 shots lastseason with limited time. I believe her point total will increase as the number of shots she takesincreases.” Emily is the daughter of Will and B.J. Davis.

Randi Timmons # 6 Freshman Season: Established herself as a starter from the first day of pre-season. Started at sweeper in the beginning of the season and was moved into themidfield halfway through the season to provide more of an attacking presence forour team. Has the versatility to play anywhere on the field. Started in 17 of her 19 matches and gathered 3 assists.

Coach’s Comments: Randi is about as tough as they come. Many of the girls she competes againstare bigger than her, but she nevers comes out of a 50/50 ball without gettting the better of her opponent. She is extremely accurate with set pieces and will be asked to play a pivotal role with them this season.Randi will be playing in a variety of positions. Her first touch allows her to control the tempo of thegame and I can use her speed to exploit weaknesses in other teams. She has the potential to be one ofthe better players in our conference and I expect her to have an outstanding career at LMU. Randi is thedaughter of Tom and Deborah Timmons.

She has

earned the respect from the coaching staff and the players with her attitude. She has improveddramatically from her freshman season and a lot of that can be contributed to her intelligence of thegame. She is beginning to recognize when and where the ball needs to be played and should seeincreased playing time this season.

She also combines a fierce tenacity to complement her finessegame. She started in 12 of the 19 matches. Halfway through the season, shedemonstrated that she could play the center back position and it has been hers

ever since.Coach’s Comments: Jenny has the talent that will allow her to accomplish her goals. She mustestablish a degree of poise and composure to accompany her physical ability. I will look to her thisseason to anchor our defense and to initiate our attack with quality services.

................................................Freshman Season: As a freshman, she led our team in scoring (25 points)despite limited playing time. She scored goals against Lynn University and WestFlorida and established herself as a dangerous player. She tied the school recordfor goals in a game with four and at this pace could make a run at several of

LMU’s offensive records.Coach’s Comments: Aubrei has the natural ability to beat players 1 v 1. Sometimes she is not evenaware of what she is doing because she is just reacting to the balance of the defender. This is verydifficult to coach and some players just have the knack for it. If Aubrei can maintain a positive workethic and stay tough mentally, she has the potential to lead the team and conference in scoring.

MEET THE 2001 LADY RAILSPLITTERS

Amy comes to the Lady Railsplitter program after spending last season withthe LMU softball program. While attending high school more then a year ago,Amy lettered in soccer at nearby Anderson County High School. During herprep career she was named All-Region her senior year as a goalkeeper and All-District her junior and senior year. Amy has a very competitive nature and will

compete for playing time in the midfield postion. A big key as to how much Amy will help the LadyRailsplitters this season depends on how quickly she can make up the year of soccer she lost lastseason while playing softball, and how quickly she can become acquainted with the college level.

# 225’7” Senior Defender Cincinnati, Ohio

Amy Ballman..............................................Freshman Season:Recorded six shots and an assist from her defensive positionin 1998. Played an instrumental role on a defense that qualified for the GSCTournament. Named to the GSC All-Academic team for the second year.Junior Season: Amy solidified herself as a solid marking back. Started all 19 matches in the back.Named to the GSC All Academic Team for the 3rd consecutive year.Coach’s Comments: Amy is an expereinced defender for this team. 2001 RAILSPLITTER SEASONOUTLOOK

Railsplitters Look For Consistency & Finishing Touch In2001The two fundamental characteristics of the game that have prevented us from achieving our goals in the past are theability to capitalize on our scoring chances and the mental approach that all 11 players have to defend and attack. When we have incorporated those elements on game day, we were a very tough team to beat. The main goal for the2001 team will be to find a way to bring that brand of soccer to the field every match. Another essential element to oursuccess this season will be finishing. I believe that of our 17 matches last season, we out shot our opponent in 14 ofthose matches. The problem was our execution around the box. Many of our players have been working hard in theoff-season to raise their game to a new level. Although 16 of the 21 players on our team are underclassmen, I feel thatlast season afforded many of them the opportunity for some much-needed game experience.

Defense:

Two-time Co-Captain, Ben Madsen (Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin) will return in the net for his final season. Ben has done atremendous job in the net the past couple of years. If he stays healthy, I feel he can be the best keeper in the confer-ence. Jacob Barnard (Bybee, Tennessee) will step into the backup role for his first collegiate season. Two key lossesfrom last season were Team MVP, Tim Diedrick and 3-year starter, Carl Guilluame. Newcomer Frank Matura (Berlin,Germany) will compete immediately for the center back position. Sophomore Leonard Jeffers (Ft Lauderdale, Florida)had a tremendous off-season and has established himself as a very capable defender. Sophomore John Bongers(Forest, Ontario, Canada) who won the starting position early in the season will be back to solidify our defense.Newcomers Silas Watkins (Knoxville, Tennessee) and Rod Solana (Hoover, Alabama) will compete for time as well.

Midfield:

This is where the biggest questions will be answered for our team. Last season our defending and creativity in theattack was poor from this area of the field. There could be some new faces this season in this section of the field.Returning for his final season is two-time All-Gulf South Conference selection and the 1998 GSC Tournament MVP,Edmond Bogonko (Nairobi, Kenya). Fabian Reissner (Berlin, Germany) who established himself as a starter as afreshman will be back at the defensive midfield. Newcomers Dominic Reissner (Berlin, Germany), AlexanderWendland (Seeburg, Germany) and Jon Lloyd (Covington, Kentucky) will look to make their mark as interior midfieldersas well. On the flanks there will be heavy competition for playing time. Sophomores Derek Dudzik (Portage, Indiana)and Scott Day (Centerville, Ohio) will rotate from the flanks and forward positions. Dudzik and Day have good speedand creativity. I look for both of them to contribute to our attack this season. Also battling for time will be sophomoreNick Tzerefos (New Orleans, Louisiana). Nick is a very quick player and can be dangerous if his decision-making iscrisp and accurate. Sophomore James Gordon has shown the most improvement in the off-season and should be adangerous player for us on the flank.

Forwards:

As in the midfield, there will be a lot of questions being answered early in the season to see who can be the mostproductive. Our leading scorer the past two seasons is gone. The loss of David Mwendapole will force someone topick up the slack at the forward position. Two-time senior Co-Captain, Chad Stevens (Centerville, Ohio) will providethe leadership and work ethic that will be required at the forward position. Junior Jenkins Mote (Yaounde, Cameroon)has improved his game dramatically from last year. I look for him to play a vital role in establishing a consistent attackfor our team this year. Newcomer Ryan Madsen (Matthews, North Carolina) will compete for time along withDudzik and Day.

................................................6’1” 177 lbs. Senior Goalkeeper Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin

Sophomore Season: Nearly 100 saves in debut season for the Railpsplitters.Collected one shutout in1999. Despite being plagued with injuries for his inauguralcampaign, Ben still managed to earn the ranking of fourth in LMU history forsaves in a single season with 99.Junior Season: Established himself as a catalyst in a strong defense. The lasttwo seasons, our defense has been the strength of our team. Ben was able to

execute some spectactular saves during the course of the year. Ben is a good leader and his work ethicand dedication have paved the road for his athletic success. I feel that if we can combine a dangerousattack with our defense we should be able to have the break through season we have been looking for.Coach’s Comments: Ben will break several school records this season including; matches played in acareer and has the potential to become the best goalkeeper that LMU has ever had.

# 2 Scott Day..............................................5’10” 153 lbs. Sophomore Midfield Centerville, Ohio

Freshman Season: Scott established himself early on with his play in pre-season.His time was split between the flank position and up top. Scott played in 14 matcheslast season and tallied 3 goals and 2 assists for 8 points to place 6th on the team inscoring. Towards the end of Scott’s freshman season, he showed that he couldhandle a heavier load by creating scoring chances for himself and his teammates.

Coach’s Comments: “Scott has the potential to be a very dangerous player. The key for him will behis recognition of specific attacking situations. When he is isolated he has the ability to beat players1-v -1. The talent that Scott needs to develop is the recognition of how and where the defense is beingdrawn in to him and to distribute the ball accordingly. I look for Scott to have a great year.

Silas joins the Railsplitter program after a very successfull prep career at WestHigh School. Silas has the speed and technical ability to compete right away fortime. His strength would have to be his left foot and should develop into a solidleft flank or back for us. Silas recently traveled to Venezuela to help the local

community in building a church. He is a well rounded young man and will be a pleasure to coach.

Frank joins the Railsplitter program after attending the University of Berlin-Technical Institute where he was in attendance in the Business Program. Franknot only has the size and speed that we need out of a center back, but he is avery intelligent player as well. I think with the personnel we have returning

combined with our new players, we should have the makings for a strong defense. Frank is a graduateof Luise-Henriette school and is the son of Werner and Ursula Matura.

Jon joins the Railsplitter program after a stellar career at Bishop Brossart HighSchool. After my initial conversation with Jon’s high school coach, I knew I had ahard worker. What I didn’t realize is that he had a true ability to find the net. In hislast two seasons, Jon scored 33 goals and 13 assists in 35 games. He was namedAll-Conference in 1999 & 2000, All-District (1998, 99, 00). In addition, Jon wasnamed All-Region in 1999 and 2000. I look for Jon to have an impact on our team

immediately. Where he will play will depend on his transition from the speed of the high school gamecompared to that of college.

Fabian gave us a consistent performance every match last season. The best thing I can say about Fabian is his commitment to a high work ethic. He demands a high level from himself and as coach you love to see your players

commit themselves in this manner.Coaches Comments: I look for Fabian to establish his presence more on the field this season. He hasseen the college level and knows what it will take to set himself apart.

Dominic will be joining his younger brother Fabian this season and I amexcited about the possibility of these two finding success together at thecollegiate level. Dominic graduated from Markgrafen High School and hassince been enrolled at the University of Berlin working towards an economicsdegree. I look for Dominic to come in right away and compete for a starting

position. Dominic will bring a wealth of technical experience and intelligence on the field. I think havingFabian and Dominic on the field together will help build the chemistry that we have been looking for.

Chad can play in a variety of positions and has the visionnecessary to set people up. Played several games last season with a dislocated shoulder. I know onceChad steps onto the field, I will not have to worry about a lack of effort.Coach’s Comments: After shoulder surgery in April, Stevens is expected to be cleared to play by theend of August.

Freshman Season: In his first season as a Railsplitter, Edmond was selected 1stTeam All-Gulf South Conference. In addition he was voted to the 1998 All-GulfSouth Conference Tournament squad and selected as its Most Valuable Player. Healso made the Panama City All-Tournament squad. At season’s end, Edmondranked 3rd on the team in shots (43), tied for 3rd with assists (6) and tied for 3rd inthe history of the conference for points in a single match with 2 goals and 3 assists

for a total of seven.Sophomore Season: Selected 1st Team All-Gulf South Conference, ranked 2nd on the team in shots with(40) and assists (6) and 3rd on the team in points with (10).Junior Season: Hampered by injury most of the season. Edmond started 11matches and scored 12 pointsto tie for 2nd on the team in scoring.Coach’s Comments: Edmond has a lot of natural talent. If he can stay healthy and remain fit he willhave another great year. This could be his breakout year.

Freshman Season: Jenkins played in all 18 matches and scored two goals on theyear. He demonstrated early that his technical ability was at a very high level. Ittook him a few matches to realize the style of play we were introducing as well asthe intensity, but once he got the hang of it he has since turned into one of ourbetter players.

Sophomore Season: Played in all 17 matches and scored five goals and one assist. Scored the third goalagainst Christian Brothers who were ranked eleventh in the country at the time. Shared time in themidfield and up top, but I think his true gift is setting people up. If we can get our attacking players to becreative in their runs, I know Jenkins will find them.Coach’s Comments: “Has matured a lot since his debut season. Jenkins is starting to assume aleadership role within the team and I feel as long as he is producing, this role will be met with enthusiasmfrom the other players.”

Freshman Season: John established himself early as being able to handle thedemands on playing in the back at the collegiate level. After the second game ofthe season, he captured the starting position and never relinquished it. John’soverall strength and balance allow him to fight off certain attacking players with abit more speed. He has also established himself as a strong presence in the air.Coach’s Comments: If John stays healthy, he will play a pivotal role in

establishing the caliber of defense I am looking for.

Freshman Season: Derek established himself early on in pre-season as a playerwho could be dangerous on the attacking end. The aspect of his game thatallows him to stand out and what made him such a great high school player is hisspeed. He could be one of the quickest players on the roster. As a freshman, he

was able to score 5 goals ( 10 points) which tied him for 4th on the team.Coach’s Comments: Derek knows what it takes to get to the next level. I have never questioned hisdesire to become a better player. The key development in his game will be the knowledge of how tocreate space for himself and for his teammates.

Freshman Season: Nick saw time in 13 matches and gained valuableexperience as to what it takes to compete at this level. Nick has a great workethic and is deceptively quick. Nick is able to set up scoring chances for himself, but he needs to combine this attribute with the poise and composure to finish offhis chances.

Coach’s Comments: Nick wants to elevate his game to a higher level and I know he has the physicaltalent to get himself there, but he must find a level of comfort to play within.

# 14 Nick Tzerefos

Freshman Season: Saw limited time at the flank position and established himselfas a threat on the outside with his speed. Leonard had a tremendous springseason and proved to me that he is able to play in the back. Leonard is verydifficult to beat 1 v 1 mainly because of his speed. If he incorporates somepatience and effective distribution, he could be one of the better backs we have

had.Coach’s Comments: If Leonard can stay healthy, he will be a valuable asset to our success thisseason.

Freshman Season: Played in all but one match as a freshman. Saw time at theflank position as well as right back. Tallied 1 goal and 1 assist for 3 points.Played his best match against Milligan College where he was matched up againsta player who had played on the Kenya national team. James not only held him incheck, but managed to be dangerous on the attack as well. Displayed the

intelligence and poise I was looking for from him in the spring season. James will play an instrumentalrole on our team this season.Coach’s Comments: James attitude is excellent. He works hard and has molded his game into thetraditional English mold; technically sound and direct. I look for a solid year from James.

# 24 Jacob Barnard Jacob will enter his first collegiate season this fall. He will be given theoppportunity of competing for time with current men’s goalkeeper ( BenMadsen). Jacob played his high school soccer at Cocke County High School.

Although his team missed the playoffs, Jacob gained valuable experience by anchoring the net. Jacobhas the dimensions to be a solid goalkeeper. He is very strong and his hands are developing. OnceJacob masters the fundamentals, it will just be a matter of time before he will have enough confidence tobe match ready.

Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 asa living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophyand ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in thefall of 1863 when the President was meeting with GeneralOliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in andaround the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyaltythat the people of the region had shown to the Unionduring this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on themap, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you comeout of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that

you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world allthese years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice theydeserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder ofHoward University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area toaddress a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, andhis wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with theMyers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slainPresident. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life ofAbraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programsand curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of AbrahamLincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; loveand respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; anappreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 104th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering 30 majorsin four different schools: School of Arts and Sciences, School of Education, School of Nursing and AlliedHealth, and School of Business. LMU has a current enrollment of approximately 1753 students and 70faculty members at the main campus and seven off-campus sites around the tri-state area. The main campusis also home to the Abraham Lincoln Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in thecountry.

The GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE (GSC) enters its 31st year of excellence, continuing a tradition of growthand success that has brought it distinction as one of the elite NCAA Division II conferences. With 18 universities in sixsoutheastern states, the GSC is the largest playing Conference in Division II.

GSC members feature comprehensive athletic programs that compete for 13 official conference championships:football, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’sbasketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s golf. As an all-sports conference, the GSC iscommitted to the promotion and practice of honor, integrity and sportsmanship.

We take pride in our 34 National Team Championships in nine sports and the emphasis on academic successby our coaches and student-athletes. The combination of Delta State’s Fall 2000 Football Championship and WestFlorida’s Spring 2001 Men’s Golf Title marked the first time since 1990-91 that two teams from the GSC won nationaltitles in the same academic year.

Originally known as the Mid-South Conference, the GSC was formed by six universities in the summer of 1970:Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State. Due to scheduling problems during the 1970-71 academic year, the only league sport wasfootball. Jacksonville State won the league’s first championship.

In 1971, the league changed its name to the GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE, added Southeastern Louisiana(SELA) and Nicholls State (increasing the membership to eight), and opened an office in Hammond, LA. The followingyear, Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) were admitted. NELA with-drew to go Division I two years later, followed by SELA and Nicholls State in 1979.

The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the presidents admitted Valdosta State. WestGeorgia joined in 1983. Eight years of stability ended in 1991 when Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went Division I,briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members, before the beginning of an expansion resulting in ten new members:Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama-Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University forWomen (1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkan-sas (1995-96). Jacksonville State went Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College dropped to Division III atthe end of 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSCwelcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any level with18 schools.

Former Commissioner Jim McCullough moved the GSC office to its present Birmingham location. The currentCommissioner, Nathan (Nate) N. Salant, has been in office since October 1992. He is assisted by AssistantCommissioner for Media and Public Affairs Michael L. Ingberg, Assistant Sports Information Director MichaelAnderson and Office Manager Mary Jean Box round out the full-time staff. The Chairman of the GSC Board of Directorsis Dr. Frank Franz, President of the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Joining him on the executive committee arepast-Chair Dr. Charles Dunn (Henderson State) and Vice Chair Dr. Robert Brown (Arkansas Tech). The Supervisors ofOfficials are Billy Johnson (Football), Mike Murphy (Basketball-East Division) and John Caldwell (Basketball-WestDivision).
