HELIO D’ANNACoach Helio D’Anna, or simply Coach “L” (as he is known throughout thesoccer world), begins his fifth season as head coach of the LMU soccerprogram after last season’s NCAA Division II Final Four ride with themen’s program.

After capturing men’s and women’s GSC Championships in 2005, theLady Railsplitters advanced to the NCAA South Regional Tournament forthe second consecutive year before falling in the semi-finals. 2007 LADY RAILSPLITTERSEASON OUTLOOK

The LMU women’s soccer team enters 2007 with one objective in mind, to get back

on track. After making the NCAA national tournament in 2004 and 2005, the Lady

Railsplitters failed to qualify in 2006. In that year, the team had to get acquainted

with a new region and a new set of opponents. The adjustment proved to be a

tough challenge and although the team appeared in the regional rankings a few

times, in the end, the women came up short. Now the road map is well-defined and

the players know what to expect. Not only are the conference teams more familiar

to the returning players, but so are the regional top teams. The LMU team will have

to perform well against the

“usual suspects” Tusculum,

Carson Newman, Catawba,

Columbus State, Clayton

State and Mars Hill as well

as the up and coming

programs (Newberry,

Pfeiffer, Wingate, and Lenoir

Rhyme). Obviously the

players who are best

prepared for these

challenges are the

returners. LMU has a strong

core of the team returning

including stars Heloisa de

Oliveira, Juliana Povoa,

Patty Spielman, Camilla

Verissimo, Hanna Toivonen,

Robyn Rowe and five

ascending players (Catalina

Varsalona, Courtney Hollis,

Tiffany Trent, Leanne

Harkness and Erin

Longworth). Speaking of

players, a strong class ofnew ones arrive for the fall with little time to acclimate. Although all are very

talented, some are expected to have tremendous impact such as Karina Campos,

Denise de Resende, Vanessa Santana, Becky Thompson, Hannah McEwan and Lea

Cataggio. Much is also expected from Lindsay Wainikainen, Julianna Childers, Mandi

Moran, Karen Boleska, and Ashley Wallace. Arriving to contribute to the aspiringsuccess are three new members of the coaching staff, assistant coach Paula Fantini

and graduate assistants Adriano de Moraes and Jon Williams. They will be just as

important in providing the extra boost to the already motivated roster that is eagerto produce. The mixture of veteran decorated players and extremely talented

incoming players is very exciting. All players worked very hard this summer to arrive

in top shape, including several who played in summer leagues. The posture is to

quietly go about business until the time to make a noise comes when the first match

that takes place on August 25 at home vs. Pfeiffer University.

2007 RAILSPLITTERSEASON OUTLOOK

The word confidence comes to mind when one takes a look at the LMU men’s soccerteam roster. After a banner year in 2006 when the team won the NCAA AppalachianRegional title, the Elite-8 title and appeared in the NCAA Final Four, the Railsplittersboast nothing less than 16 returners. Several returnees were key in the 2006 campaign, including Brent Cole, Jordan Green, Felipe Nogueira, Vitor Souza, Pedro Canineu, MarceloGalafassi, Claudio Rico, Leo de Barros, Leandro Pereira, Guilherme Alves, and NelsonPizarro. the Railsplitters return solid contributors in Patrick Riesenberg, Gavin MacLeod,Ian Richardson and Kyle Grosand nothing is being left tochance. A number of strongplayers have been broughtin. Much is expected fromJemal Talore and JemeleJuber but all the new playerswill bring in strong traits, including Robel Moges, GregLewandowski, AaronMcKenna, Adam Huber andJimmy Vandenhurk. Alsoarriving to contribute to theaspiring success are threenew members of the coach-ing staff, assistant coachPaula Fantini and graduateassistants Adriano de Moraesand Jon Williams. They willbe just as important inproviding the extra boost tothe already motivated rosterthat is eager to produce.Standing between theRailsplitters and another tripto the national tournament isa number of tough oppo-nents, both in the confer-ence (all tough games withemphasis placed on LenoirRhyme, Carson Newman,Tusculum, Catawba andNewberry) and in the region(key matches include theUniversity of Charleston,Salem International and Alderson Broaddus). Critical to the strength of schedule in-cludes out of region matches with Barry University, Lewis Universityand PresbyterianCollege. This veteran-oriented LMU team knows that nothing will come easy and no onewill hand games out without a fight. So to earn a chance to appear again in post seasonplay, the Railsplitters have worked extremely hard this summer and have a record num-ber of the players that competed in various summer leagues.

Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a

living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and

ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of

1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver

Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around

the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The

President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that

the people of the region had shown to the Union during

this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr.

Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this

horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want

you to do something for these people who have been

shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all

I can to aid you and between us we may do them the

justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good

to us we may be able to speak of it later!”

Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was

a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to

the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a

Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there,

the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several

prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President.

It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of

Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University

programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified

in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of

the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative,

individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free

enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 110th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university,

offering over 30 majors. LMU’s Fall 2006 enrollment was 2,981 students and there

were 96 faculty members at the main campus and ten extended-campus sites. The

main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which

houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.
