2008 SEASON PREVIEW With 10 players returning and factoring in an experienced recruiting class, all the ingredi-ents are there for a quality 2008 campaign.

Three seniors look to finish their ca-reers on top of the South Atlantic Confer-ence standings. Jaclyn Dvorscak was a solid player on the outside in the 2007 season and turns her focus to defense this year. Last season Caitlin Hankins showed signs of breaking out in the middle and looks to step up her play in 2008. Cami Lefeld looks to have an expanded role at the right side after a solid spring season.

A solid junior class returns in Alison Hess, Amanda Horenkamp, Alicia MacIntyre and Katelynn Riordon. They provided a lot of offensive and defensive production last season, and Horenkamp was named to the All-SAC team for her efforts.

Three sophomores - Lia Bevins, Lauren Kiwacka and Ashley Knight - played big roles in their first season wearing the Blue and Gray. They are all looking to take their play to a high-er level.

Transfers Krysten Adsuara and Kodi Cartwright are expected to be impact players. They bring experience and a spirited attitude to the team.

The lone freshman is Candace Richardson. She will be competing for time on the outside this season.

Once again Coach Smith has thrown the team “into the fire” with a demanding non-conference schedule that should prepare them for a run through the ever-tough South Atlantic Conference and the ultimate goal of a SAC Cham-pionship and the program’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

This year’s squad will also have the opportunity to post the 300th win in the program’s 17 year history as they enter the 2008 season with a 293-232 overall record.

COACHING STAFFMIKE SMITHHead Coach Heading into his 15th season at the helm of the Lady Railsplitter program, Coach Smith has experienced many highs and lows. He enters the 2008 season with hopes of balancing things out as he will have one the most talented teams to ever play volleyball at LMU. The 2007 season saw Smith and the Lady Railsplitters begin South Atlan-tic Conference play by posting another 20-win season and having one player named to the All-SAC team. Under Smith’s tutelage, the Lady Railsplitters have had ten 20-win seasons and have won 61 percent of their matches. The program has made five postsea-son appearances and had 12 players named all-conference, academic all-con-

ference or freshman of the year. One of his players has also been named American Volleyball Coaches Associa-tion National Player of the Week. The 1999 squad received a team award from the AVCA for their academic achievement. Coach Smith is currently ranked 31st in the NCAA Division II in victories and third amongst SAC coaches in total career wins with 284. During the summer months, Smith enjoys promoting and teaching volleyball. He spends many hours on the road running camps all over the region for middle and high school players. Originally from Manchester, Kentucky, Smith was a member of the baseball program at Lincoln Memorial University. He received his bachelor’s degree in athletic training/health in 1992 and his master’s degree in edu-cation administration and supervision in 1994. In addition to his coaching duties, Smith serves as the Lincoln Memorial University Athletics Compliance Officer. He is married to the former Katy Stanley and they have one daughter, Mary Kathryn.

MEGAN SUMRELLGraduate Assistant Coach

Adding a coach with playing experience, enthusiasm and a winning back-ground is important, and the LMU volleyball program found that in 2007 with Megan Sumrell. Megan is from Chattanooga, Tennessee, and played for a successful team at Notre Dame High School. Following graduation she enjoyed to a success-ful career at Middle Tennessee State. She ended her career as the Blue Raiders’ all-time assist leader, and the team finished her senior season with a Sun Belt Conference championship and a top 35 national ranking. Her primary responsibilities are coaching the setters, film breakdown and overseeing the fitness and conditioning program. Coach Smith will also rely on her background as an exceptional setter not only to teach LMU’s setters the

technical aspects of the game but the mental aspects as well. Megan holds a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and is working on a master’s in education and teacher licensure at LMU.

2008 LADY RAILSPLITTERSJACLYN DVORSCAKDefensive Specialist/Outside Hitter 5’9” SeniorWhiting, IN (George Rogers Clark High School)

Coach Smith on Dvorscak: “Heart, desire and being a good teammate describes what Jackie brings to this team. She has worked on her ball control and looks to be a presence on the back row. Her commitment to what she does is exceptional and she is the ultimate team player.”

MARY E. MARS GYMNASIUM The LMU volleyball team plays all of its home matches in the historic Mary E. Mars Gymnasium, the home of LMU volleyball since the program came into existence in 1989. Since 1992 the Lady Railsplitters have compiled a 121-60 record, good for a .669 winning percentage in 15 seasons of play in the facility.

Since the opening of the Turner Arena in 1991, the facility has been used almost ex-clusively by the volleyball team. Beginning in 2004, the facility has undergone extensive renovations including a new scoreboard, technology upgrades at the scorers table/press row, repairs to the locker rooms, new windows and new glass-door entrances. The Annan Natatorium, built in the early 1950’s, is connected to the Mars Gymnasium and has recently completed renovations as well.

The facility seats 1,500 spectators for athletic events, and houses offices and classrooms. Coach Mike Smith’s office was moved here in 2004 and is located next to the West entrance.New to the Mars Gymnasium is a state-of-the-art weight room used by the LMU students, faculty and staff. Several classes are taught in the facility using both the court and a classroom located in the front of the building. The J. Frank White Academy also uses the facility as their home basketball court.

The building now known as Mars Gymnasium was originally a sports arena at Camp Forrest, an Army post and prisoner-of-war camp in Tullahoma, Tennessee, (now a part of Arnold Air Force Base known as the Arnold Engineering Development Center) from 1941-1946. One of the more famous people using the future Mars Gymnasium during this period was General George S. Patton, who used the facility in 1941- 42 to help train the 2nd Armored Division. Later in the war, Camp Forest was also used as a POW camp. After the war, Camp Forrest was closed and the building was no longer in use.

In 1946, LMU began a $75,000 campaign for a new athletics facility and it was suggested that the Camp Forrest building be bought and moved to the campus. The building was renamed Mary E. Mars Gymnasium after the mother of a former member of the Board of Trustees, Sam Mars Sr., and dedicated to all mothers everywhere. Mars Gymnasium was officially opened on November 29, 1948, in a basketball game which saw the Railsplitters fall 58-43 to the Tennessee Volunteers. In the1950’s the Mary S. Annan Natatorium was added to the building. Mars Gymnasium served as the home of the men’s and women’s basketball teams from 1948-1991.
