Lori Y tes' state of Untogethernessby Rod GudinoFriedrich Nietzsche once argued that while thecreative experience posed one of the profoundestmysteries for the rational intellect, its depths couldbe fathomed if artistic expression was understoodas a mixture of chaos and formalism. Virgin artistLori Yates might have been thinking along thoselines during the frenetic outburst of creative -- andchaotic -- magic which produced her newest album, aptly titled Untogether, and released this week.
Hardly a stranger to the music biz, Yates hasbeen a songwriter whose talents have drawn theattention of major labels from Columbia to VirginRecords as well as Music City itself, where shecranked out a song a day during a stint there. Notsurprisingly, her work attracted fans and fellowartists like Martin St. Clair, whose Frenchrendition of Yates' These Are The Days hit #1 inFrancophone Canada in January of this year.
Formally speaking then, Lori Yates hasproven herself to be a natch at writing songs and

Sting's catalogue ranges from his wild dayswith The Police during which time he had majorhits from albums like Zenyatta Mondatta andSynchronicity, through his early solo works, including Dream Of The Blue Turtles and up to hismore recent "solitary treks" Soul Cages, TenSummoner's Tales and Mercury Falling.
The deal comes on the heels of the successful
reworking of Sting's Every Breath You Take by PuffDaddy & Faith Evans as I'll Be Missing Youreleased on the Arista label. The single made its debuton the RPM 100 Hits Chart at #67 (July 21/97).
Sitting in on the signing with Sting, hismanager Miles Copeland and publishing consultantJim Doyle, were EMI Music Publishing's Chairmanand CEO (Worldwide) Martin Bandler, EMI MPUK Managing Director and Senior Vice -Presidentof International Acquisitions Peter Reichardt,Director of Finance and Administration TomBradley and Senior Business Affairs Manager ChrisMileson (see photo).

at singing them, the latter attribute which has beenevident from a three album legacy of personalmaterial. In lieu of those accomplishments, thetime came for the singer to immerse herself intosomething completely different, in theNietzschean sense, into an experience ofimaginative anarchy.
"I wanted to challenge myself, I wanted to gobeyond what I am and I wanted to be open tolearning again," says Yates. "I had gotten to thepoint in my music that I felt like I really knew whatI was doing and there was a certain complacency inthat. I needed to have my foundations shook, goinginto something that I didn't know."
Yates quickly found that something in a trioof Toronto based computer artists who practiseda musical flair reminiscent of Tricky and wentunder the name of Opium Concepts. Finding acommon spirit even in their disparate musicalworlds eventually brought the four into the studio, where they began exploring a new realm of songsand songwriting that employed no songwritingblueprints and loose structures.
"We mostly wrote with bass, loops andvoice," says Yates, who had never previouslyconceived of pop music without a guitar or piano."The instrumentation came around my voice andI think you can really hear that on the record; it's

sparse, you know, it's not like a guitar record, there are no guitar solos."
Best described as a ten song compendium of aquatic pop songs which feature Yates'
unmistakeable vocals bobbing on a sea of mood and atmospherics, Untogether is pure distilled
emotion with little rational obtrusiveness. Dangerous, yes, and not an album that could have
been pulled off without personal courage and some strong musical experience to back it up.
"It was incredibly exciting because I didn't know the rules, I just knew I could sing and I knew
I could write," she says. "I didn't even go to old lyrics 'cause all of that had gone and I really wanted
to discover what I had to say. I just let it come out, it
was like my subconscious speaking. I had to go back and look at the songs and look at the lyrics to make
sense of what I was saying." Untogether marks more than a departure for
Lori Yates, it's a bona fide milestone in her career. And while she is acutely aware of the fact, the singer
seems as relieved as she is pleased that the move in a new direction has had such positive feedback.
It's as if she won a battle in which she nevertheless came perilously close to losing.
"There were some personal changes going on before making this record and really the record was
a musical expression of all those changes," she says.
"The gigs I was doing were really shitty and I
thought, you know, I deserve better than this; if this is what my career has come to, then I'll be a secretary
thank you very much. "I love and respect music and I only want to present it in a respectful manner and at the time I
didn't know how to do it in a way that felt good for
me. Meeting the guys from Opium Concepts gave me that, they were from a completely different
school than I was; they didn't know me, I didn't know them, our musical references were completely
different. All I knew was that I liked them as people and they liked me and my voice and that's what we
went on. It was a complete fresh start."

RipChord Records, has led to a recording deal for the band. Initial release will be The Brown Bomber,
their second album and the follow-up to their self -

Perry explains, "When I first heard the band's debut album, I thought 'this is fabulous, I'd like to
get involved somehow with this group'. I first saw them open to Hip shows in the States. As an
unknown entity they really captured the audience and showed a potential well beyond that found on
their debut CD. Now that Van Allen Belt has a new CD set for release and exposure to what will be a
musically astute audience at Another Roadside Attraction, The Brown Bomber seemed like the
perfect first release at RipChord." The new album was recorded earlier this year

Gotcha I I! One of the reasons that foreign retailersstayed out of British Columbia was the low -ballingand lost-leadering prices of the province'ssacrosanct operation that got deals that evensurprised SS. Well, push has come to shove andthe new guy on the block is crying "foul". Thatsacrosanct dealer is publicizing comparable prices. . . his and a couple of their's, and the differencehas caused the alarm bells to ring at the operationthat boasts a policy of "no dick'n around with theprices." Record companies are somehow being heldaccountable for the "dirty advertising." (EC: A bigyawn!!!)
Meanwhile!!! Those big box operations haveapparently caused some concern with their returns. It's nice to get an order for a million bucks, buttaking back most of it hurts, BIG. (EC: The cost ofdoing business!!!)
Speaking of sacrosanct!!! After pissing on thefour corners of BC and claiming it theirs, expandingeastward may have been a big and costly mistake. The guy at the top with the personality of a pit bull, has suddenly turned into a pussycat, the first signof trouble. It was easy to bite the hand . . . whenbusiness was up. But most of the fingers are gone. What to do now. (EC: Get outta town, or Albertaanyway!!!)
Cancon CanCan!!! We get letters and thenwe get this: "Rather than waste precious time I havemailed you another package about ... who are basedin Gainesville, Florida, but whose music isCanCan." But this publicist isn't alone . . . it's a
We're not inventive or creative!!!When it comes to talent and skill, we asCanadians are outstanding. But when it comesto concept . . . we fall flat. While our writers, producers, performers, directors, comedians, andanimators are the best in the world. In the nextphase of entertainment, we will only besupplying the raw material. We won't be comingup with the next leading edge of ideas. This issomething that must change. Has there ever beena television show conceived in Canada that hascaptured the imagination of the world? Well, yes there was. SCTV was the sole export thatdid in fact sweep the world. Why can't we dothat more often? Will the day ever come whenour artists will walk into a studio in Vancouveror Halifax and produce the sound from Canada? That has to be our next project. And the newsounds, the new ideas and the new concepts willbe something that Canadians will create for theworld to listen to and look to Canada for more.Meanwhile, we will continue to be the farm teamof the US, sending them our very best talent, waiting for the day when that original idea willbe born in Canada. -Walt
normal happening for a Canadian daily to misspellCancon. We all know how to spell CanCan!! ! (EC:Could be the nickname for Cancon in BelleProvince!!!)
Limited Edition??? Nice concert at the OntarioPlace Amphitheatre with the New Edition, sansBobby Brown and the Brothers Bell. (EC: Anyrefunds???)
One for the money??? There's trouble downin the US of A's Music City. An upstart label thatstormed in like barn on fire, is suffering from smokeinhalation, the local Musicians Union is loweringthe boom on a smart -ass independent, and the lawis taking a look at the unsavoury practices of acouple of producers. Add to this, independentoperations, some of them known for out-and-outstealing, are being centred out by the press. It'sgonna be a hot summer down Nashville way. (EC:It may throw cold water on some of the Nashvilleact-alikes we have in Canada!!!)
Surfing the archives!!! What a rich history wehave in our Canadian recording industry, albeit shortcompared to our suspicious and growing moresuspicious every day neighbour to the south.Looking through the Nov. 22, 1986 edition of RPM,there was a notice that the Leahy Family was closeto a major deal. The band had caught the attentionof country programmers with the release of You'veGot The Fiddle (And I've Got The Bow), whichwas taken from their album On The Move. Fastforward to June 6, 1987 and the announcement thatthe family band would be playing the InternationalShow during Fan Fare in Nashville. And there's aphoto of the band. I counted eleven of them. Andwhere are they now? Well, for one thing they toppedthe RPM Country Album chart last week with theirpopular self -titled Virgin album. (EC: Obviouslyan overnight success!!!)
Spoken word??? Could the new trend inrecorded music be spoken word over a backgroundof music? The daughter of a famous Canadiansongwriter/producer, without the help of DaDa, isattracting interest in England with her voice-overs.Watch the street -smarts on Toronto's Queen Streetto latch onto the new, but not so new, idea. (EC:Are the A&R guys patched in???)
Stop the presses??? The publishing ofunauthorized biographies of high -profile peoplecould lead to legal tie-ups, and even worse. Theprotective net around one such personality wasn'tenough to stop the writer nor the publisher of anunauthorized biography of their ward. Besides thethreat of legal action, the writer is experiencing afreeze from sources that might benefit from such abiography, unauthorized or not. (EC: It's a small, small world!!!)
Watch out for Mississauga!!! In the past, tome anyway, Mississauga meant the airport andCapitol Records, now EMI, of course. Well, after aDaniel Kersner, Martha Comish, Kym Hall -conducted tour through Mayor Hazel McCallion'slatest monument, The Living Arts Centre, I canalmost visualize Mississauga up in lights and evena mention or two on the Letterman show. This isthe Roy Thomson Hall, Hummingbird Centre,Massey Hall and Sam The Record Man all rolledinto one. By the way, Keith Harding, late of Capitol/EMI is the centre's vice-president of marketing. We'll have to do a REAL piece on this massiveundertaking, that will open with the best fromCanada's star system. And because there's a hintof "culture" in the name, you know, Living Arts . .
. watch for the NAFTA people to cry foul. We arethat close to the border you know, and we couldinfluence those US of A border huggers. (EC: Didyou say huggers???)

Ron Sexsmith brings out Other Songs
by Rod Gudino
As far as unlikely pop icons go, Ron Sexsmith seems to be the man of the hour. Bashful and sad -eyed,
the baby -faced Sexsmith looks much younger than his 33 years of age and a lot more reticent at talking
about himself than the average pop star. But make no mistake, Sexsmith is a star with a core fanbase
consisting of people like Elvis Costello, Paul Simon, Sting, Filter, Leonard Cohen and Sheryl Crow. It's
a change that came about somewhat dramatically, after Sexsmith's self -titled debut made a more than
minor splash last year (Costello called it "a modest and elegant gem"), prepping the singer songwriter for this year's Other Songs.
"The change hasn't affected me at all except that I have to leave home bit more," says Sexsmith who leaves a wife and two kids when he goes on the road. "Other than that it's been pretty
comfortable." Other Songs continues to define Sexsmith as
a folk troubadour operating within the heritage of fellow -Canadians like Joni Mitchell, Gordon
Lightfoot, Neil Young and especially Leonard Cohen, to whom he has been oft compared. As such,
he has become dependable at crafting songs that
?age Music to dlistribute Roger Hodgson release
Roger Hodgson is not touring with Supertramp for various reasons. He has been kept busy touring Europe and promoting his new solo album Rites
Of Passage. He will be in Canada the third week of August to promote the album which will be
available through Page Music Distribution the early part of September.
The album was recorded live in concert, and
as Page Music's Derick Ross points out, contains Hodgsons "signature voice, acoustic 12 -string guitar
and staccato keyboard style." The album contains eight new songs and four well-known favourites.
Ross also points out that Hodgson is supported by world -class musicians, including his son Andrew on drums, Supertramp front man John Helliwell on saxophone (first time together in 13 years). and
highly respected composer Terry Riley. "Hits such as The Logical Song, Take The Long Way Home,
and Give A Little Bit, take on a renewed vitality and appeal," while Hodgson's new compositions
contain "all the trademark ingredients that made Supertramp a global success."

are simple at heart and yet resound with a poetic force that is rare and powerful. It's a beauty that is
evident on many of Other Songs' meditative and melancholic moments like Honest Mistake (which
features an accordion accompaniment by Sheryl Crow), Clown In Broad Daylight, Strawberry Blonde and Pretty Little Cemetery, the latter which depicts a child's reflections as he stands over the
grave of another child. "Melancholy seems to be emotion that I can
tap into the easiest," says Sexsmith who nevertheless does not see himself as a particularly sad person. "I think a lot of
it has to do with the sound of my voice, it has this kind of slow vibrato. There
are certain songs like So Young which isn't really a sad song at all but I think
my voice makes it sadder than it was intended to be. Pretty Little Cemetery
for me isn't a sad song, it's more about life than death. I'd like to think that my
music is not sad or cynical, I'd like to think it's very hopeful and very life
affirming." Sexsmith traces a vibrant
songwriting career to Interscope Music Publishing, where spent some time
writing songs for other musicians to record. Eventually the publishing firm caught wind of a few personal demos and signed him on the spot after label heads Jimmy Iovone and Ted Field invited him
to play at their office. The next two years were spent trying out songs in public
venues, opening up for the likes of Elvis Costello, The Chieftains, Sarah
McLachlan, The Cardigans and
Mar]ah Carey gets digitally couriered
Honey, the hotly anticipated new Mariah Carey single, will be making its radio debut via Digital
Courier International this on Wednesday July 30 at precisely 8:00 AM local time. DCI will be
simultaneously servicing the single to a host of Canadian CHR and Pop Adult radio stations,
barring an American leak which will have the folks at the network getting the single to stations earlier
than anticipated. Honey will introduce Carey's upcoming album, titled Butterfly, to Canadian
audiences. Daydream, Carey's last album, is currently hovering at a whopping 700,000+ units
sold in the country.
Ace Cooper at America Online
http://www.aol.com Veteran shock rocker Alice Cooper will be getting on-line and on -site at America Online for a web
chat with fans and other curious parties. Cooper, who made a feature appearance at Toronto's
Radiohead, which went far toward winning mass audience approval for the budding artist. The media
especially has fallen hard for Sexsmith's self- effacing manner, something which has made him a natural pop star despite himself. "I really don't know what to think," he says,
"but it's been good because I'm not really getting much in terms of radio or sales so it's nice to have
that kind of support. People are always judging things by numbers, I'm hoping to bypass all of that."
Other Songs' first single, Nothing Good, is currently being serviced to radio in the wake of a
US and Canadian tour which is expected to take the singer/songwriter to all stops across North
America.
Canadian Music week this year, is continuing a publicity junket in anticipation of a new album,
title or date of release as yet unknown. Drop in on July 2th sharply at 10 pm (EST) to catch the inside
scoop on the man who is credited for influencing Marilyn Manson.

PUFF DADDY & THE FAMILY -Hip HopNo Way OutBad Boy Records 73012-NToo often it's been said that hip hop music is afans -only format. Like hardcore punk, hip hophas often been indistinguishable one songfrom the next to outsiders who are deaf to allbut the raps and beats. It takes a master ofthe form -- and make no mistake, Sean (akaPuff Daddy) Combs is a master of this form --to about-face the format into a differentdirection and simultaneously make it palatableto the mainstream. Granted, Puff Daddy & hisFamily are not the first to lay some rhymesover a sample, butthey do hold the honour ofbeing the first to exploit it to the successfulextent we see here. The Daddy unravels amiraculous yarn comprised of parts from atapestry of hits and would be's from DavidBowie's Let's Dance (Been Around The World),Average White Band's Person To Person(Friend), The Ohio Player's Little Lady Maria(Senorita), Grand Master Flash and theFurious Five's The Message (Can't NobodyHold Me Down) and a slew of others. Anexhaustive compendium of artists fromNotorious BIG, Busta Rhymes, Ginuwine,Foxxy Brown, Faith Evans, 112, Mase, Jay -Z,Black Rob, Lil' Kim and Carl Thomas populatethe release and are meshed into the vibe bythe flawless production expertise of Puffy, whoseems to be in possession of an authenticMidas touch (esp. after recent work on albumsfrom Mary J. Blige, Jodeci and Heavy D). Theresult is a record that is extravagantly styledand grand in scope and, despite its borrowedclothes, pulls itself off as something akin to aPink Floyd The Wall of rap. No shit. I'll BeMissing You is the single, which functions onThe Police's Every Breath You Take and ismade frankly unsettling when it is turned intoan ode to BIG, who is the single most visibleFamily figure on the album, sharing a host ofsinging, production and writing credits. Thesong is skyrocketing in Europe, the US andhere at home, just one of the many triumphsto be found on No Way Out. -RG
PRIMUS -AlternativeThe Brown AlbumInterscope 90126-JNow on theirfifth studio album, Primus remainan acquired taste for those who like their sonicboom to sound something like a mid-air crashbetween drums, guitar and bass. But whereasthe trio drew much of their initial musicalreferences from people like Rush andMetallica, The Brown Album's tendencies forcacophonic nonsense seem to tip the hat moreto The Residents than anybody else. Ourtheory: too much drug abuse went into thisalbum, but steroid ridden bass player LesClaypool has still got chops bigger than a T-
bone, relatively dwarfing impish guitarist LarryLallonde and new drummer Brain. The choicecut is a trying number called Shake Hands WithBeef which sets an epileptic pace for theremainder of the album and pulls fewfavoursfor radio. Despite (or because of) Tales FromThe Punchbowl's relative success last year(primarily founded on Winona's Big BrownBeaver), Claypool and co. seem determinedto make sure commercial success doesn'thappen again. A kiss and tell affair then, thatwill probably end up as a footnote of Primus'career. Check out Bob's Party Time Lounge,Coddingtown or The Chasting Of Renegadeforfollow-ups but don't bet the farm on it. Self-indulgence and musical introspection of thisdegree usually goes little further than acollector's item. -RG

PUENTE DEL DIABLO -Nouveau FlamencoPuente Del DiabloPrepu Entertainment PdD 01 -IndependentThe Latin craze is upon us and bringing with ita wave of hot salsa tinged music with roots inthe South. Among them, Puente Del Diablo(Devil's Bridge), which is beckoning on thestrength of the traditional couched comfortablyin the contemporary. No, this is not a Spanishspeaking death metal band but a four mancollective playing vibrant nouveau flamencomusic with modern flourishes and an accenton liveliness. Puente del Diablo released thisself -titled six song debut in February of thisyear and are currently running the gig -gamutand increasing their chances at maximumexposure. They've been slotted most recentlyat the Latin Music Festival and elsewhere, andaudiences have taken naturally to adependable sound which has given Latinmusic its broad cross-cultural appeal, especially of late. While a good portion of thisdisc maintains itself in the instrumental realm, there is a strong interplay of vocals to be foundon Amorame and Luna Y Sol. The title track isa beautifully rendered piece with an elaborateopening and a strong dancing body which willgive this band some strong wings once thefanbase gains momentum. A must -see live actwith great potential forthe discriminatory label. Is anyone listening? -RG
J.P.CORMIER - Folk 'n CountryAnother MorningBorealis -004Known primarily as a multi -instrumentalist,having mastered the fiddle, guitar, mandolinand banjo, J.P. shows his vocal side here witha stunning package of down home warmth. The material, most of which he solo -wrote, digsdeep into his Cape Breton roots. But there's acountry connection that surfaces throughout.Key here is the title track, taken as the firstsingle, a lilting, celtic folk song that would fitnicely into the country or NC formats. The
Fiddle set, an instrumental, is an awesomedisplay ofJ.P.'s talent on the fiddle, a medleyof J.S.Bach's Bouree in E Minor and PreludeIn A Major, J.R's Joel Chaisson's Reel and TheBroom, a traditional song, four minutes and abit of an amazing collision of cultures. Also keyis Gone, a song he wrote with Fred Lavery;Blackbird, featuring Sylvia Tyson and CaitlandHanford on harmony vocals; and My Life IsOver ... Again. But don't overlook Long ForThe Sea, a beautiful ballad that nudges the
inner soul. Another heartwarmer is Gilgarry'sGlen, very Scottish, but enchantingly folksy, featuring the Point Aconi Mass Choir, with adelightful finale. Produced by Paul Mills and BillGarrett and recorded at Lakewind Sound Studiosin Point Aconi, Cape Breton Island. -WG

ThingsWe Said Today, a difficult -to -match Lennon/McCartney cover, an almost impossible coverof The Last Time by The Rolling Stones, oreven the ultimate in difficult -to -cover, HereComes The Night, written by Van Morrison, belies description. Except to say, that Yoakam'ssurprise is not really a surprise. He does it hisway. The duet with Sheryl Crow on Sonny &Cher's Baby Don't Go, is priceless, as is hisspin on The Kinks' Tired Of Waiting For You orDanny O'Keefe's Good Time Charlie's Got TheBlues. Hey! Maybe it's producer PeteAnderson, or a combination of Anderson andYoakam who came up with the concept. Thisrelease will certainly move Yoakam into the NC market, but his country fans should beheartened by the fact that Yoakam has founda comfortable niche in bringing back the pastbut on his terms. Claudette should be acceptedas a breakthrough for Yoakam, meaning, ofcourse, bringing him back on mainstream. What a great experiment, and what a greatvoice to experiment with. -WG

ALBUM PICKSARAH McLACHLANSurfacingNettwerk 30116-FSurfacing is Sarah McLachlan's sixth album in the ever developing million dollar sagathat has become this woman's career. The last three albums especially have beenmonumental breakthroughs for Mclachlan and Nettwerk Records, including Rarities, B -Sides and Other Stuff, which proved once and for all that the singer's core fanbase is inthe millions. In the wake of those successes comes Surfacing, which is already gettingrave reviews in the half -week it's been out, flabbergasting critics with its immaculatesensuality and altruistic pop spirit. It'ssomething we've come to expect fromMcLachlan without losing the ability tosurprised and touched by music thatremainsfaithful yet new. There is a lot aboutSurfacing that isnot new; bandmembersAshwin Sood (McLachlan's new husband)on drums, bassist/guitarist Brian Minatoand keyboardist Pierre Marchand returningfor double duty as producer. Mostpowerfully not new is McLachlan'simpeccable voice that is largely responsiblefor breathing the ten songs on this albumto vivid life. That said, there is no onemoment on Surfacing that retreads oldground and makes us doubtthat the singeris still well into her prime. Radio has alreadyfallen for Building A Mystery and won't stoptill it sees it at #1, the exact spot where the record debuted on SoundScan after 56,372Canadians rushed out to buy it on release (160,990 in the US with a #2 debut). Amagnificent record, full of dark terrestrial beauty - just one of the many reasons whySurfacing serves as this week's album pick. -RG

world. Sure, Roy Orbison has been covered and so has the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Van
Morrison, but done the Yoakam way, it's almost like a renaisance without the conspirators,
Orbison's Claudette, taken as the first single, is vintage Orbison, without the master. Things
We Said Today, a difficult -to -match Lennon/ McCartney cover, an almost impossible cover
of The Last Time by The Rolling Stones, or even the ultimate in difficult -to -cover, Here
Comes The Night, written by Van Morrison, belies description. Exceptto say, that Yoakam's
surprise is not really a surprise. He does it his
way. The duet with Sheryl Crow on Sonny &
Cher's Baby Don't Go, is priceless, as is his spin on The Kinks' Tired Of Waiting For You or
Danny O'Keefe's Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues. Hey! Maybe it's producer Pete
Anderson, or a combination of Anderson and Yoakam who came up with the concept. This release will certainly move Yoakam into the A/
C market, but his country fans should be heartened by the fact that Yoakam has found
a comfortable niche in bringing back the past but on his terms. Claudette should be accepted
as a breakthrough for Yoakam, meaning, of course, bringing him back on mainstream.
What a great experiment, and what a great voice to experiment with. -WG

SAN FRANCISCO - Classical
SYMPHONY AND CHORUS Conductor
- Michael Tilson Thomas
At the risk of oversimplification, timeless doesn't equate with timely. Mahler's Das
Klagende Lied is a cantata that will be performed as long as music is played. Yet, we
suggest that there is a best time and place to listen to it in a recording. That time is in the deep of winter and the place should be one's study in front of a cozy fire with a glass of
cognac at hand. Smokers will also enjoy a fine cigar. Das Klagende Lied is heavy stuff, which
is not to say that it's stuffy, only that it commands attention. When received it rewards
with the deep satisfaction and intensifying of sensual comfort. Michael Tilson Thomas has
the orchestra and chorus under tight control here, but not so tight that the essential drama
of the work isn't elicited in the strongest of emotional terms. The four soloists are in good
form as well. They are Marina Shaguch (soprano), Michelle De Young (mezzo),
Thomas Moser (tenor), and Segei Leiferkus (baritone). In honesty, we must confess that
they were unknown to us before enjoying this excellent album but must also say that we were
muchly impressed by their singing, especially that of Miss De Young. What one hears here is the three movement version which is most
satisfactory. We've always felt that Mahler might well have intended it to be turned into
an opera with the other movements one day. Certainly it has the stuff of which great operas
are constructed. Oh, and one final word. Don't let our personal inclinations dissuade you from
the pleasure of hearing this early Mahler with overtones of Turandot, Hamlet and Cain and
Abel. Enjoy it whenever you wish. (But, we still thinkyou'll enjoy it more on a winter's night.) -BW

an award winning video (Windows To The Past), which gained two international gold awards. The band also holds the distinction of being the first
Canadian band to perform on the General Jackson Showboat in Opryland, resulting in several return

engagements throughout the summer. This year they were nominated for Big Country awards in the group and outstanding new artist categories. A new single, The Man Upstairs, is now at radio. Wood begins
tracking the new single beginning July 23. Concert dates coming up include the General Jackson

single had a short 11 week run to the top of the chart. The single is the title track from his most recent MCA album that is chalking up good sales
at retail. No news at press time as to what the follow-up single might be.
Lisa Brokop has signed to Sony Music Nashville. Rumours of her moving have been in the hopper
for some time, but it was only last week when all the paperwork was completed that the switch was
made public by her fan club newsletter. Apparently, Brokop's manager, Bill Carter, was approached in
1996 by Allen Butler, who heads up Sony Nashville. Nothing official from Sony, but it's rumoured that
it's a multi -album deal. Brokop is apparently in the studio working on her new album.

?auk Gross returns to host CCMA awards show
Paul Gross, star of Due South, returns to host this year's Canadian Country Music Awards show which
will be televised live from Hamilton Place (Sept. 8) on the CTV TV network.
The show, which is the culmination of Canadian Country Music Week '97, will also be
seen in the US on The Nashville Network (TNN) and CMT Europe. Last year's show attracted an
audience of more than a million and half Canadians. "Paul's a natural for this job," says Gordon
James, executive producer of the show. "When we asked him to do it last year, we were sure he'd be
able to do the job and we were delighted. We are thrilled that he has agreed to come back."
There was apparently some negative response to Gross being asked to host last year's show. As it
turned out he was a serious country music fan. Gross's role as RCMP Cpl. Benton Fraser on
Due South (for which he is also executive producer) has won him two Gemini Awards for best actor. He
is also a heavyweight in the writing field for both theatre and television. His credits include that of
playwright -in -resident at the Stratford Festival, as well as writer for Gross Misconduct, a TV drama.
He has also made numerous film and television appearances as an actor.,
Country veteran Danny Hooper, recently signed to Edmonton's Royalty label and gaining spins for his release What's A Girl Gonna Do With A Boy Like You, with Reprise artist Paul Brandt.

CCMA showcases offer an important hook
Many of today's recognizable names in country music got their break through showcasing during
Canadian Country Music Week over the past 20
years. The three days of activities which culminates with the CCMA awards show Monday September

The scramble to get on the list to showcase began as last year's show wound down. Choosing
who would showcase out of the hundreds of entrants was a difficult task for organizers. The final list for the three days of showcasing in the main ballroom of Hamilton's Sheraton Hotel reveals that 40 acts
will take to the stage. They are as follows:

Trudy Burke a country DJ at 3WRB Stereo 974 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, is making
Michael T. Wall, Newfoundland's well-known Ambassador to the world, very popular in that part

CJNB music director Doug Harrison gives the first "picker" nod to Amy Sky's new single.
Written by Sky, Melissa Manchester and Eric Kaz, If My Heart Had Wings was shipped to radio by
Iron Music as a CD single. The single is three -parts Cancon (APL). Taken from her Cool Rain album,
the single is the follow-up to Til You Love Somebody that had a 12 week run up the chart.
David Dancer makes an impressive return to country with the release of his brand new album entitled If I Were A River, released on the Cougar
label. Dancer made chart news with his past releases and it's a given that his new album will
spawn several chart items. It's not known at time of writing which track will be the first single, but
there are a number of out -of -the -shoot possibilities, including the title track, written by David Holiday,
and a couple of Dancer originals, Yesterday Was Better and It's You I'm Living For. Also key are is
Leonard Kohls' penning of It's A Hello Goodbye World, and From My Lips ... To God's Ear, written
by Frank Longo. Dancer dedicates his album to the memory of both writers. "two of the finest
songwriters I have worked with." He also dedicates the album to his father "for passing down his love of music." The tracks were produced independently by Mitchell James, David Ashley and Albert
MacDonald and recorded at Toronto's KINCK and TSP studios.
Paul Brandt was scheduled for a July 27 Homecoming Concert at Calgary Saddledome. This
will be the first time Brandt has performed publicly in his hometown since the release of his double
platinum album Calm Before The Storm, which won a Big Country award this year as album of the year. The concert is being staged in support of the 1997 Kinsmen Children's Hospital Home Lotto
which raises funds to benefit the Alberta Children's Hospital.
Colin Raye is getting a major promo/publicity push from Sony for his Best Of release which
spawned his latest hit, What The Heart Wants, the most added on the RPM Country 100 this week,
jumping up to #29 from #61 after six weeks. The album will be in stores on August 26. The single
was written by Michael Dulaney. The album was produced by John Hobbs, Ed Seay and Paul Worley.
Rick Tippe is back and he hits hard with The Real Thing the most added single this week at #86. The single, written by Tippe and Philip John
Russell, was taken from his Moon Tam album, Get Hot Or Go Home, produced by David Pomeroy.
Tippe gets half of the music and lyrics, which gives him two parts Cancon.
Beverley Mahood makes a strong bid for chart action with her latest Spin single, A Little Thing Called Love. This is the follow-up to Girl Out Of
The Ordinary, which is included on her two -song CD release and which became a national hit for her. The new single was produced by Rick Hutt and recorded at Kitchener's Cedartree Studio. The
single qualifies as four -parts Cancon.

bring attention to the formation of The Warren Foundation, an organization established to raise
funds to assist victims of domestic violence. (RPM
- May 19/97). His concerns about this issue prompted him to write The Secret, his latest River
North single (#35). The foundation's first fund- raising venture will be the Jamie Warren Golf
Tournament which will be held Aug. 5 at the Mandarin Golf Club in Markham, Ontario in
association with the Canadian Professional Golf Association Championship. Besides a day of golf,
there will be a fund-raising auction and a benefit concert featuring Warren and other special guests.
Warren's initial efforts to bring attention to his project attracted CIS S -FM Toronto on -air
personality Dan Williamson, who was instrumental in organizing the Warren Foundation. Interesting
too is the naming of the organization. Warren means "safe haven" as well as "defender" or "protector".
Those interested in helping to sponsor the Jamie Warren Golf Tournament should contact the Warren
Foundation at 519-725-6548.
