Oppression and brutalitycharacterized the Roman Empireduring Christs time.

Puppet governments permitted byRome were probably worse than

Rome itself.Yet, Jesus never advocated any kind ofrebellion against this government, or

even the withholding of taxes from it.

obedience to it as a sacred dutywithin its legitimate sphere.

But when its claims conflict with theclaims of God, the word of God must

Some of the most powerful andinfluential people with whom Jesusdealt were the religious leaders,

many of whom were openly hostile toHim.

Jesus always sought to be redemptiveeven of those powerful andinfluential people who would

eventually condemn Him to death.

Jesus referred to the Scriptures andeven sacred history, appealing towhat should have been common

ground between them.He sought to bring the leaders to a

deeper meaning of the law that theyclaimed to cherish and uphold so

fervently and devoutly.

Jesus then appealed to their mostbasic notions of decency andkindness, something that these men

all should have related to.Finally, the miracles themselves

should have spoken loudly to theseinfluential leaders about theextraordinary Man among them.

The genuine disciple is faithful untildeath, not faithful until disappointed.

The explosive potential of Jesusmovement remained hidden duringHis earthly ministry. Following His

resurrection, however, the kingdomerupted, evidenced by massive

conversions, even among those ininfluential positions.
