“God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for

God was with him.” Acts 10:38 !Introduction

This training has been crafted by people who have spent years evangelizing. Many of whom had no reference for evangelism other than scripture and a passionate burden for lost souls. This training was developed for the benefit of the Body of Christ. It is my sincere hope that the Holy Spirit will impart to you the same grace or greater grace than He did to me to reach the lost. My passion is that our lives and yours will line up with the accounts that we read of in the book of Acts.

I sincerely believe that evangelism, much like prophecy, is something that all believers can and should do. Our goal is to make the practice of evangelism simple, un-intimidating, fun, and reproducible for everyone. I believe that no matter what your experience has been with evangelism, you will be able to take these principles to become supernaturally effective in reaching the lost, healing the sick, and ministering the reality of God’s person to all you encounter.

Evangelism and the Gospel In this section we focus on four subjects: the ministry of evangelism, the gospel, how to effectively share the gospel, and salvation.

“The Acts of the Apostles happened because the Apostles ACTED!”

- Smith Wigglesworth

What Is Evangelism?

- Evangelism very simply put is the delivery and declaration of the news of victory or anything that brings great joy. In Christianity, it is the proclamation of the victory and joy that the Kingdom of God has authority, dominion, and power over all other dominion and power through the sacrifice, resurrection, and Lordship of Jesus Christ.

!Where Does the Term Evangelist Come From?

- The term evangelist is a term closely linked to the Greek word Evangelion which appears almost 80 times in the New Testament and is translated as the word gospel.

!- The Greeks and Romans also had gospels heralding their emperors and

their heirs as divine rulers, saviors, and even in the case of Augustus (Octavian who defeated Mark Anthony and Cleopatra in 27 BCE) a fulfillment of prophecy.

! 5

Evangelist (Miriam-Webster): 1often capitalized: a writer of any of the four Gospels 2:  a person who evangelizes; specifically : a Protestant minister or layman who preaches at special services 3: an enthusiastic advocate <an evangelist for physical fitness

Evangelion: a. Reward of good tidings, given to the messenger; to make a thank-offering for good tidings; to crown one for good news brought b. Good tidings, good news

The noun evangelion has the following cognates:

1. Evagenlizo (verb), “to bring or announce good news, proclaim the gospel.”

!What is an Evangelist?

- An evangelist is someone who delivers and proclaims good news. In a historical context, the Greeks and Romans would write evangelions or as we call them gospels to announce victories and important events that were good news. To be entrusted with the delivery of these gospels was a high honor and the individual was rewarded by those to whom the gospel was announced.

Acts 8: 4-8

Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word. 5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them. 6 And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. 7 For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed; and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. 8 And there was great joy in that city.

Matt. 4:19

!19.Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of

men.”

Who Is Called To Do the Work of Evangelism?

“Every Christian is either a missionary or an impostor” Charles Spurgeon

- Every follower of Jesus

!The Gospel of The Kingdom

“An authentic gospel is profoundly simple. A complex gospel thrives where there is little to no experience required.” Bill Johnson

- What is a “kingdom?” Myles Munroe, author of Kingdom Principles, defines kingdom in these terms: A kingdom is the governing influence of a king over his territory, impacting it with his personal will, purpose, and intent, producing a culture, values, morals, and lifestyle that reflect the king’s desires and nature for his citizens.

- There is no kingdom without a king. Jesus is our victorious King. Through His victory the Kingdom of Heaven is being established on earth.

- The Gospel of The Kingdom is the joyous announcement of the victory, dominion, and presence of God’s Kingdom on earth, which demand that people believe and repent. We proclaim that through faith in the finished work of Jesus we have access and citizenship to this kingdom. Not only that, but we are royal heirs of this kingdom with full rights to the benefits, protection, and resources of this kingdom through Jesus.

! 7

Mark 1:14- 15 14 Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

!!Christians In the Exile of Unbelief and Ignorance

“The best title of the professing church of God today, in my judgement, is “Unbelieving Believers.” Leonard Ravenhill

!- When only the gospel of salvation is preached and the other victories of

the Kingdom of God are ignored the people of God suffer unnecessarily. People begin to devalue or even deny access to the benefits of being a part of the Kingdom of God. What are some of the victories and benefits of the Kingdom of God?

Sharing the Gospel of The Kingdom With Believers and Nonbelievers

- The gospel of the Kingdom starts with the immutable victory of its King, Jesus, over sin. The death and resurrection of Jesus defeated all the power of Satan and reversed every curse mankind had brought upon themselves through sin. We can, by faith in the finished work of Jesus, experience this same victory in our own lives. Many Christians do not believe (have faith) in the present reality of the Kingdom of God’s dominion over all of creation. They believe that Jesus died for their sin and that by faith in Him they are justified, having eternal life. However, they neglect the reality of many of the benefits of the Kingdom such as healing, deliverance, peace, abundance, joy, gifts of the Spirit, etc.

!- We can and must not only reach unbelievers, but also other Christians

with the full gospel of the Kingdom. The Holy Spirit will anoint you to demonstrate the Kingdom to people in a way that proves Him. The most effective way to share the gospel of the Kingdom is to demonstrate the reality of the Kingdom to believers and nonbelievers alike. How can we share and demonstrate the gospel (the good news, the victory) of the Kingdom of God?

!________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

!Matt 18:3

"Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.”

What is the Gospel of Salvation?

“Jesus did not come into the world to make bad men good, but to make dead men live!” Leonard Ravenhill

- The good news of salvation, eternal life, and righteousness through faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ has become known as the gospel of salvation.

Romans 1:16

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

- The gospel of Salvation is the good news that God the Son came down in the person of Jesus Christ and fulfilled the requirement of the law and was offered up as the perfect sacrifice for all the sin of mankind past, present, and future. Not only did He die for our sins, but He also was resurrected from the dead. Through His perfect life, His sacrifice, and resurrection we can have forgiveness from our sins, be reconciled to God, and have eternal life if we repent, believe in His resurrection, and confess Jesus as Lord.

Romans 10: 9-13

[…] that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

! 10

How To Share the Gospel of Salvation

- The gospel of salvation can be share in many ways. It can be shared through the written word in tracts, pamphlets, in conversation, in preaching etc. The key is that the content of what is being shared is biblically sound and anointed by the Holy Spirit.

!*Review Acts 8 and the ministry of Phillip the evangelist.

!What should always be included when we share the gospel of salvation with another?

!An Effective Illustration to Explain the Gospel of Salvation

One of my favorite ways of illustrating the gospel of salvation is through the example of a judge having to preside over a criminal case against his child. *Explain and have them do it.

Praying With People for Salvation

-An easy way to remember how to pray with people for their salvation is through a method called the ABC’s of salvation.

A) ACKNOWLEDGE that you are a sinner.

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. !

B) BELIEVE on Jesus.

Acts 16:31-32 So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.” Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. (NKJV) !

C) CONFESS with your mouth.

Romans 10:9-13 […] that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” !

- Remember, a ritual prayer itself does not save a person. Their faith cannot be in the prayer it must be in Jesus. Rather than telling them that they are saved, I recommend telling them about the work that the Holy Spirit will continue to do in them and the fruit thereof. !!John 1:12-13 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. !

!! 12

Why Spiritual Gifts Are Important to Evangelize

- We are called not just to preach the gospel, but to demonstrate the reality of it as well.

!Acts 17:2-4 NKJV

Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and DEMONSTRATING that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ.” And some of them were persuaded; and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and not a few of the leading women, joined Paul and Silas.

!1 Corinthians 2:4, 5 NKJV

And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

!What are some of the ways we can demonstrate the reality of Christ’s resurrection and lordship over all?

! 13

What is Salvation?

- Salvation is the transformation of a person by God's spirit through the finished work of the cross of Jesus Christ birthing them into His kingdom. Through this we also receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

!1 Peter 2:9 NKJV

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.

!Romans 8:8, 9 NKJV

So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.

!1 John 4:13-15 NKJV

By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.

!!!!

! 14

How Does Salvation Happen?

- The Father draws the unbeliever in. !John 6:44 NKJV No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. !- The unbeliever responds appropriately the gospel: believes, is given the grace to repent, and confesses Jesus as Lord. !____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ !Romans 10:14-17 NKJV How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!” But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord , who has believed our report?” So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. !

2 Corinthians 7:10 NKJV For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death. !Romans 10:9-13 NKJV

[…]that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

! 15

- The person is now a new creation in Christ Jesus with a new nature. They have been rescued from the power of darkness and have been brought into the Kingdom of God and are now joint heirs with Christ Jesus having full access by faith to all of the benefits and privileges of God’s Kingdom. !2 Cor. 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new16

!Romans 8:16-18

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. !

How Do We Know That Someone is Genuinely Saved?

*The Basis of Genuine Assurance

-True conversion: A true Christian is a new creation and will live a life that reflects God's radical work of re-creation in his/her life.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

Matthew 7:16

You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they?

!-Assurance is based upon self-examination in the light of Scripture.

2 Corinthians 13:5

Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you unless indeed you fail the test?

!! 16

1 John 5:13

These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

*Test of Biblical Assurance

!1. Walking in the Light

1 John 1:5-7 NKJV

This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

!2. Confession of Sin

1 John 1:8-10 NKJV

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

!3. Obedience

1 John 2:3, 4 NKJV

Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

!!!!

! 17

4. Love for the Brethren

1 John 2:9-11 NKJV

He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

!5. Hatred for the World

1 John 2:15-17 NKJV

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

!6. Perseverance in Doctrine

1 John 2:24, 25 NKJV

Therefore let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise that He has promised us—eternal life.

!7. Righteousness

1 John 3:10 NKJV

In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother.

!!

! 18

8. Spirits’ Testimony

1 John 4:13 NKJV

By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.

!9. Discipline

Hebrews 12:5-8 NKJV

And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: “My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; For whom the Lord loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.” If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons.

Prayer and Attitude In this section we will cover the importance and impact of prayer in evangelism. We will also teach on how having the right heart and attitude effects our ministry.

The Heart of an Evangelist/Intercession

- It’s so important that we have the right heart when we do the work of evangelism. Prayer is probably the best way to keep the right heart and perspective when it comes to evangelism. It is so easy for even the most passionate evangelist to grow weary or even prideful. When this happens evangelism can become a task or performance and the evangelist can become disgruntle or burnt out.

Rev. 2:1-5 To the angel of the church of Ephesus write, ‘These things says He who holds the seven stars in His right hand, who walks in the midst of the seven golden lamp stands: 2 “I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars; 3 and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary. 4 Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. 5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lamp stand from its place—unless you repent. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

!Having the Heart of the Father

- Scripture says many things regarding the unsaved and the backslidden. While most of it does not sound positive, one thing that is abundantly clear from scripture is that God loves people and is incredibly merciful and gracious towards even the worst sinner. He looks beyond their current state and sees the potential for which they were created if they would only respond to the grace that He has for them. We must have the same heart for people. God’s love will propel you into the most amazing and risky situations in evangelism but in order to take the risks necessary to reach the lost, you must first have His heart for them.

!Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. !Rev. 3 14-20 “And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans[f] write, ‘These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God: 15 “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot,[g] I will vomit you out of My mouth. 17 Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked— 18 I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. -How do you think God feels about people who are lost or not taking full advantage of their salvation?

!Prayer That Invokes Change and Action

“Prayers are deathless. They out live the lives of those who pray them.” E.M. Bounds

- Prayer should both challenge and change us. When we pray and ask God to breakout in a territory, ripen the harvest, and send awakening we should expect Him to first change us. We should expect God to charge us to go after the lost and hurting. When we pray regarding evangelism we should expect to receive revelation and strategy and to be moved into a place where we are not satisfied with merely praying but we are moved into action.

Acts 4:31

And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

Sharing God’s Emotions

- God has feelings; He has big emotions. During intercession, I have asked God to allow me feel how He feels about various subjects. I remember on one occasion crying out and asking Him to let me feel how He feels about the lost. It was overwhelming and I found myself weeping on the floor for quite some time. I’m sure that was only a small portion of God’s heart for the lost. I got up from that experience motivated to share Jesus with people in an even greater way. Sometimes in prayer we just ask God what He thinks about a situation, but we do not need to neglect to ask Him how He feels, especially when it comes to evangelism.

!!

! 22

Jeremiah 20:9

Then I said, “I will not make mention of Him,Nor speak anymore in His name.” But His word was in my heart like a burning fire. Shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, And I could not.

The Power of Weeping and Travailing

“Perhaps if there were more of that intense distress for souls that leads to tears, we should more frequently see the results we desire.” Hudson Taylor

!- Travailing and weeping prayer is powerful. These special times of

intercession I believe are essential to progressing God’s work. There is a place in prayer that is beyond words and beyond tongues. In this place of groaning’s and utterances, of which scripture speaks, we touch and are touched by God in such as special way that it literally births His purposes both for us and in us. Our tears mean something to God. Scripture says He bottles them. It is in these moments that atmospheres literally shift, when heaven is manifest and becomes a greater reality within us and through us. There is no formula to get to that place per se, but you do have to make yourself completely available in times of prayer to have such an encounter.

Psalm 6:7-9

Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity; For the LORD has heard the voice of my weeping. 9 The LORD has heard my supplication; The LORD will receive my prayer.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

!! 23

Propagating Boldness

- Boldness is planted in prayer, cultivated in encounter, and refined in action. Boldness in evangelism is essential. There are certain results that you will not get without boldness. Boldness will take you past every instinct of self-preservation and into a greater expression of God’s supernatural power. Boldness is only needed when there is an uncomfortable level of risk involved in the ministry. When we step out in faith and boldness, God meets us in a special way that is disastrous for the kingdom of darkness.

Acts 4:29-31

Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, 30 by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.” And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Empowered To Witness In this section we will discuss what God has provided for us to empower us to be effective witnesses of Jesus.

Baptism in The Holy Spirit

- The baptism in the Holy Spirit is an empowering experience promised to us by the Father in which Jesus immerses us in the Holy Spirit and fire. This is different from the indwelling of the Holy Spirit which we receive upon salvation.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

!Acts 1:4-8 Amplified Bible (AMP) !And while being in their company and eating with them, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait for what the Father had promised, Of which [He said] you have heard Me speak. For John baptized with water, but not many days from now you shall be baptized with (placed in, introduced into) the Holy Spirit. So when they were assembled, they asked Him, Lord, is this the time when You will reestablish the kingdom and restore it to Israel? He said to them, It is not for you to become acquainted with and know what time brings [the things and events of time and their definite periods] or fixed years and seasons (their critical niche in time), which the Father has appointed (fixed and reserved) by His own choice and authority and personal power. But you shall receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends (the very bounds) of the earth.

!!

! 25

What is the Purpose?

- The purpose of receiving the baptism in the Holy Spirit is to give us power to be an effective witness of Jesus Christ. Below are the Greek words and definitions for the words power and witness in scripture.

!-Power: The Greek word here is dynamis !Dynamis: 1) strength power, ability

a) inherent power, power residing in a thing by virtue of its nature, or which a person or thing exerts and puts forth b) power for performing miracles c) moral power and excellence of soul d) the power and influence which belong to riches and wealth e) power and resources arising from numbers f) power consisting in or resting upon armies, forces, hosts !

-Witness: The Greek word here is martys !Martys: 1) a witness:

a) in a legal sense b) an historical sense c) one who is a spectator of anything, e.g. of a contest d) in an ethical sense e) those who after his example have proved the strength and genuineness of their faith in Christ by undergoing a violent death !

-Jesus by baptizing us in the Holy Spirit has given us the supernatural power, resources, strength, force, and ability to be an accurate, lawful, ethical, historical, and personal witness of Him even if it cost us our very lives.

What Are the Results?

- The results of this baptism as seen in scripture is the boldness and power to witness, a lack of fear of man, people responding to the gospel in a greater way, an activation of spiritual gifts, and an activation of the gift of tongues.

Using Spiritual Gifts In Evangelism

- Spiritual gifts are essential in evangelism. They help us to demonstrate the authority of Jesus and the reality of His kingdom. Let’s discuss how each of the nine spiritual gifts Paul lists in 1 Corinthians 12 can be used in evangelism.

WORD OF WISDOM:

!!!WORD OF KNOWLEDGE:

!!!FAITH:

!!!HEALINGS:

!!!WORKING OF MIRACLES:

!!!PROPHECY:

DISCERNING OF SPIRITS:

!!!INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES:

!Continued Encounters

“Many people stop short of a divine encounter because they are satisfied with good theology. The word of God is to lead us to the God of the word.” Bill Johnson

- The baptism in the Holy Spirit is not a onetime experience. The Apostle Paul tells us to be filled with the Spirit. The only way to know for sure that you are full is if you are overflowing. We need to continue to be immersed in God’s Spirit if we want to be effective evangelist.

!Acts 4:31

And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

The Power of Testimony

- Scripture teaches us that there is overcoming power in our testimony. This is true in all areas of our life, but especially in evangelism. When you can effectively communicate to others what God has done in your life it inspires them and builds their faith so that God can do the same for them.

John 4:39-42  And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all that I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans had come to Him, they urged Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of His own word. Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ,[a] the Savior of the world.” ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Evangelism Basics In this section we will discuss the more practical aspects of evangelism and how to implement what you have learned in actual outreach.

Individual and Team Evangelism

- Evangelism is can be done in many different ways and settings. It can be as simple as sharing the gospel over coffee with a friend or as extreme as taking a thousand evangelist to Times Square in New York to heal the sick, cast out devils, and preach the gospel message. Is one way better than another? Not necessarily. We have to be wise and obedient to God. Different circumstance may call for different plans of action. As an individual you will do what you have faith for. If that is as simple as casually sharing the gospel with a friend or co-worker it will work if God is in it. Other times it may be more wise to evangelize with a team depending on where and what people group you are targeting. Team evangelism can be very powerful. When you team up with others to spread the gospel there is a great strengthening that can take place and you can see extraordinary results if each team member is an active participant.

-What are some of the advantages and challenges with team and individual evangelism?

!How to Approach People

“I like my way of doing evangelism better than your way of not doing evangelism” D.L. Moody

- Be sensitive to the Holy Spirit; don't reason it; Just GO!! Be immediate and obedient; don't hesitate. !

! 30

- Introduce yourself, smile, shake hands, ask for their name, be normal! Tell them what you are doing, offer prayer, get them in agreement, and build their faith to receive. !!

Dealing With Common Objections !- The most common objection you will get from people you try to minister

to on the street is the statement “No thanks I’m already a Christian.” Atheist, thugs, drug dealers, prostitutes, Hindus, Muslims, and Wiccans are much easier to minister to on the streets than religious Christians.

- Dealing with rejection is a part of evangelism that happens to everybody. Don’t let it discourage you. Have dust shaking faith.

- What are some ways to break past their resistance? ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ !

Fostering an Atmosphere of Faith

- Pray with power and conviction. If you don't believe what you pray how will they? As you pray for them bless them. This opens up people’s faith to receive. !- Believe for the Holy Spirit to do something supernatural. Whether it is the person feeling His presence, prophecy, healing, etc. Remember you're not just called to share the Gospel, you're called to demonstrate it! !___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ !Acts 17:2-4 NKJV !Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and demonstrating

! 31

that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ.” And some of them were persuaded; and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and not a few of the leading women, joined Paul and Silas. !1 Corinthians 2:4, 5 NKJV !And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. !- If you feel that you are to prophesy to them keep in mind appropriate prophetic protocol. Which is as follows: !DO NOT PROPHESY:

• Marriage • Moving • That they are to give you or anyone else money • Death

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ !!Important questions

- By this point you may already know that they are a Christian. However, if you have any doubt as to whether or not they are walking with God ask them if they have ever heard the gospel of salvation before. If they say “yes,” ask them to share with you what it is. If they answer “no” or their explanation of the gospel of salvation is clearly unbiblical, then nicely offer to share with them what the bible teaches us the gospel of salvation is. Also, if you feel led, share some of your personal testimony of how Christ changed you. !- After you share the gospel ask them if they feel that they are in right standing with God based on what they have just heard. If they say “no”

! 32

then ask them if they would like to be saved. Once they say “yes” take them through the ABC's. !- Lead them in a prayer of repentance, acceptance, and confession. !!John 1:12, 13 NKJV !But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. !- Remember the prayer doesn't save them; tell them to cry out to God until they have full assurance of salvation. (evidence of belief) !- Only faith in Jesus saves a person. A ritual prayer cannot. It is by acceptance of God's grace alone that they can be saved. !___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ !

Avoid Arguments

- In street ministry everyone will eventually run into a person who really has no interest in Christ. All they want to do is get into a philosophical debate. I have found that these conversations are normally fruitless, distracting, and a waste of time. Not that we shouldn’t have answers, but we should invest our words wisely. How can we best deal with these situations and not get sucked into an argument?

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

!! 33

Ministering Out of Presence Not Only Gifting

- Keep in mind that scripture teaches us that the gifts of God are without repentance. It is a dangerous thing in any kind of ministry to rely on your gifting rather than on God. People are much more impacted by the manifest presence of God than they are the gifts of the Spirit. The best way to avoid falling into the trap of performance oriented evangelism is to always bear in mind why you are evangelizing: because you love Jesus and out of that love for Him you go after people.

Creatively Ministering With God

- A great quote I heard for evangelism is from Pastor Jamie Galloway. He was speaking about evangelism and was talking about how sometimes when the Spirit of God is moving and we begin to see miracles, healings, or prophetic words begin to flow we can tend to ask God what is the next thing you want to do. He said that the Holy Spirit taught him that in those situations “We shouldn’t ask God what is next, rather what is possible.” How can we be more creative with God when we minister?

! 34

Connecting With People and Churches

- One thing that is important in evangelism is connecting the people you have ministered to with Christians and good churches. The easiest way to do that is to get their phone number, connect with them on Facebook, invite them to church events, or meet them socially. If someone is saved that you minister to but perhaps God opened their eyes to more of His grace for them, then invite them to church functions and events that will further their hunger for the things of God. Also, it is a good idea, if you have not already, to connect with other like-minded churches in your area. The people you meet may not be able to connect with your church but there may be another place that is more convenient for them. Remember, evangelism is about getting people connected to Jesus and building up the body of Christ, it is not all about building your local congregation.

!Dealing With Members of Common Cults

Eventually at some point in time the Holy Spirit will lead you to a Mormon or a Jehovah Witness. It’s important to be able to handle these encounters well. Often times these are people who want to know God and want to please God, but are blinded by deception or have close family ties to these cults that keep them bound. We do not need to see them as enemies but we need to look at them with the same compassion that we would see any lost person with.

Mormons:

- Most Mormons consider you and them as Christians. Here are some key different.

- Mormons believe that people can become angles.

- Mormons believe that Jesus was an angel just like Lucifer and that they were brothers. Mormons believe that almost no one can go to hell.

- Mormons believe that there are three levels of heaven in the afterlife: the terrestrial, telestrial, and celestial kingdoms. Your position in the afterlife depends on how ‘good’ you were in this life. If you make it to the celestial kingdom you will be trained to be a god and you will be given

! 35

your own planet with the ability to create life; these beings will worship you as their god.

- They believe that there is only one prophet alive on earth. He is the onlyperson who hears directly from god.

- The book of Mormon was supposedly given to Joseph Smith by the angel Moroni who described himself as a dead Israelite.

- When dealing with Mormons keep in mind that they do believe miracles and healings. They pray for healings in the name of Jesus, and some will even tell you of miraculous healings that they have heard of or witnessed.

- When ministering to them you will find that not many are well versed in either the bible or even their own religion. They will often make statements that will try to get you to agree that they worship the same God as you. You can politely disagree and point out the differences in what you believe, share with them your faith and minister to them if they are open to it.

Jehovah’s Witness:

Jehovah’s Witness do not consider anyone else to be true Christians but themselves. The early Jehovah’s Witness leader made several predictions about the return of Jesus that turned out to be false. Here are some key differences between Christianity and Jehovah’s Witness.

1)They believe that Jesus was actually the Archangel Michael.

2)They reject the bodily resurrection of Jesus.

3)They believe that Christ returned to earth invisibly in 1914

4)They do not believe in hell. Rather the wicked are totally annihilated after death and no longer exist.

5)Only 144,000 go to heaven. Others who are not annihilated after death will live in an earthly paradise.

6)They believe that all other religions including Christian religions are under the control of satan and are a part of “Babylon the Great” described in Revelations chapter 18.

! 36

Jehovah’s Witnesses tend to be very knowledgeable about their faith and are taught how to argue against mainline Christian doctrines that conflict with their own. They have their own translation of the bible called the New World Translation which they study often and is translated to suit their doctrines. They are taught to shun friends or family who leave the religion, which means they are to have no social contact with them.

Dealing With Difficult Questions

While evangelizing, we will all at one time or another run into people who know a little bit about Christianity. Some believe they know enough to judge God or His people. I do feel that we need to be equipped to deal with these situations. Here are some common questions:

1) If God is so good and perfect then why have Christians slaughtered so many people?

!2)Do you think being gay is a sin? Do gays go to hell?

!3) If God is so good then why did He command the Israelites to kill whole

groups of people including the children?

!4)How can Christianity be right when almost everyone I knew in church was

a hypocrite?

!5)How can there be only one way to God? Isn’t that kind of ridiculous?

Aren’t there moral and good people in all religions?

!6)My __________ committed suicide. They didn’t do anything wrong to

anyone. Did God send them to hell just because they were so depressed?

!!!
