On April 22, Charles F. Baird, the chairman and chiefexecutive officer of Inco Limited, addressed the SudburyRegional Council. Excerpts from that address follow.

Here in Sudbury we have thelargest nickel mining and processingfacility in the world. It is a costcompetitive facility and we intend tokeep it that way. We shall continue tofocus efforts on improvingproductivity in order to offset theimpact of inflation on operating costs.I might add that despite a labor costdisadvantage we have been in anadvantageous position here becauseCanadian sulphide ores require onlyabout one-third as much energy toprocess as lateritic ores. OurCanadian orebodies are sufficient tosupport production at an optimal ratefor decades. Thus, our Indonesianand Guatemalan operations willsupplement, not replace, ourCanadian production. Our beliefremains unchanged that non-subsidized ocean mining will not becompetitive for a long time in thefuture. Finally, we have greatconfidence in the skill andproductivity of the thousands ofemployees who.work so hard to turna great natural resource into valuableproducts.

So our longterm commitment toSudbury is clear. As Ed Carter(former lnco Limited chairman) saidto the Council, . . we intend tostay in the nickel business, and ourSudbury operations will continue tobe our principal source ofproduction." We are here for the longhaul, and I reaffirm that commitmentto you.

I am not here to make anymajor announcement. There is onesubject relating to our longtermfuture, however, that no doubt willrequire substantial futureinvestments, and I want to give you aprogress report. I refer to productionrestraints resulting fromenvironmental regulation and what weare doing, and what we intend to do,to restore our ability to increase

our Iongterm commitmentto Sudbury is clear."production in response to marketconditions.

All of you are familiar, I'm sure,with the fact that we are proceedingwith the new process for separatingand rejecting additional quantities ofpyrrhotite. Work is proceeding onschedule at the Copper Cliffconcentrator. The modified facilityshould enable us to maintain ourOntario production capability at 280million pounds of nickel per yearwhile complying with the OntarioGovernment's reduced limit onsmelter sulphur dioxide emissionsschedules to take effect January 1,1983.

You also know we are carrying outa commercial scale test at ourThompson, Manitoba smelter of anovel smelting process for nickelsuiphide concentrates. The plannedmajor modifications at the Thompsonsmelter were completed in January ofthis year. Roasting and smelting testsare proceeding as planned. Testresult evaluations are expected to be

available around the first of nextyear.

We believe that this process,which would involve the production oflarge quantities of sulphuric acid, hasthe greatest potential for significantfurther reductions in sulphur dioxideemissions at our Sudbury smelter.Importantly, the technology has thepotential for improving workplaceconditions and metals recovery.

I am pleased to say that ourscientists and engineers areencouraged by the results to date. Imust caution, however, that there aremany hurdles to be overcome.

If the smelter test and engineeringfeasibility studies produce favourableresults, implementation of the newprocess would require extensivemodification or replacement ofexisting smelter facilities at Sudburyand construction of additional acidproduction capacity. This would takemany years and cost hundreds ofmillions of dollars.

Not the least of our problems

would be the necessity to dispose ofvery large quantities of sulphuric acidover and above some 800,000 tonswe already produce annually. Overthe past several decades, we haveworked closely with Cli., who havedone a remarkable job of developingand expanding markets for smelter-sourced su'phuric acid. If furtherreductions in emissions are not toresult in significant cuts in nickel andcopper production, we must findoutlets and uses for major additionalquantities of acid. There is simply noway to store it. Past studies have notbeen encouraging, but circumstanceschange. Early this year, wecommissioned another study by aCanadian research group. We expectto receive their report this summer.

Governments are also giving muchconsideration to this problem ofsulphuric acid disposal, not only byus but by others. It is closely coupledwith the whole question ofenvironmental controls on companiessuch as Inco and, if not resolved, hasprofound implications for theeconomies of Ontario and Canada.

The second major objective wedescribed to you in 1979 was tomanage our rates of production in amanner to preclude or minimizeundue fluctuations in employment.We cautioned that our successultimately will be dependent in largemeasure on market forces beyondour control. We then stated: If weare successful in meeting theobjectives, fluctuations for the nextfew years in our total employment inSudbury, including staff, will be withina reasonably narrow range above orbelow our present level ofapproximately 14,000 people'

Let me comment briefly on themarket forces we have faced over thepast year, and the future outlook.

year to an estimated 1150 millionpounds. This decline was due to theimpact of adverse economicconditions on nickel consumption anda large reduction in nickel inventoriesor consumers prompted by the lowerlevel of economic activity and by highinterest rates.

Nickel producers reacted quickly tothe fall in demand, however, bycurtailing production. Non-communistworld nickel producer inventoriesrose to around 400 million pounds atyear end 1980, but were still withinthe range considered 'normal" forthe industry (and about half their levelat the end of 1977).

Nickel demand in the non-communist world during 1981 isforecast to be in the range of 1.1-1.2billion pounds, or little changed fromlast year. We are somewhatoptimistic that demand will approachthe upper end of this range, sinceconsumers appear to be movingaway from a "hand-to-mouth"inventory policy.

As a result of additional productioncurtailments announced by Inco andseveral other products affecting 1981output, new supply is forecast to fallto about 1 .2 billion pounds in the non-communist world, which would resultin little change to producerinventories at year end.

Longer term we project an annualgrowth rate for nickel not exceeding 4per cent but well above the 1 percent of the latter half of the 1970's.Demand should reflect the urgentneed for the Western World toaddress its energy, defense, laborproductivity and environmentalproblems. Supplies should beadequate through the middle of thisdecade, although from time to time,during cyclical periods of highconsumption, supplies will be tight. Inthe latter part of the decade there isa greater possibility of shortages.Supply will not grow to meetdemands unless nickel prices risesubstantially to justify investment innew capacity. Inco, an establishedproducer with spare capacity, will bewell positioned to benefit from theseconditions.

We have achieved our objective ofavoiding substantial fluctuations inour total employment in Sudbury,despite the decline in nickelinventory. Through the use ofmanpower attribution, and productionplans which enable us to take earlyaction in response to marketconditions, we indeed have kept ouremployment at about the 14,000 levelin Sudbury. In order to maintain aprudent balance between productionand world-wide nickel consumptionand at the same time maintain ouremployment objective we havescheduled summer shutdowns thisyear in Sudbury and Thompson.

During the last half of 1979 andthrough the first half of 1980, weoffered employment to all hourlyrated employees, with recall rights,who were laid off in February 1978.869 accepted recall and returned towork. In addition, we hired selectivelyduring 1980 for key personnel andwhere special skills were required.During December 1980 and January1 981 we hired approximately 50 newemployees to maintain our plannedproduction levels.

Now, Mr. Chairman, let me turn toa review of several other points madeby Ed Carter in 1979 and certainevents that have taken place sincethen.

In his address to you, Edexpressed our intention of seeking adowntown location for a number ofemployee and community-relatedfunctions. I am pleased that we havebeen able to locate these functions inthe new Scotia Tower, and as soonas these facilities are completed, wewill begin utilizing them for personnelinvolved in employment recruiting,employee benefits, employeecounselling, training anddevelopment, internal audit andpublic affairs.

Ed Carter also said to you that"We are prepared to work with youand others to insure that our policies,plans and actions are coordinatedwith those of the community, and wepledge our continued general supportof significant diversification effortsthat will strengthen the economicbase of Sudbury. He also stated that"we will share with our employeesand interested community groupsmeaningful information concerningcompany policy, plans and actions."

These two commitments -support of significant diversificationefforts, and sharing meaningfulinformation with employees and thepublic - were particularly importantpledges, and I would like to elaborateon our efforts to fulfill both of them.

Looking first at our supportdiversification efforts, let me list anumber of specific initiatives:

-We have provided $200,000 cashcontribution to fund a feasibilitystudy of the Sudbury ScienceCentre and subsequently pledged acapital contribution of $5 million.

-We have continued to work closelywith the Region in the prototypegreenhouse studies using minewaste heat from our Copper CliffSouth mine to grow vegetables.

-We have continued the joint studywith the Region and Ministry ofEnergy to determine the feasibilityof using solid refuse to produce aclean-burning fuel.

-During 1980, we made total cashcontributions of more than $1million to Sudbury organizationsand activities. Our majorcontribution was $400,000 for theCAT scanner for the SudburyGeneral Hospital.

-Company research is at the pilotplant state on a new processwhich could lead to building arefinery facility in Sudbury. Ifsuccessful, this would permit thefull refining here of all gold andsilver we recover from the Sudburyore and engineering plans wouldbe undertaken for building amodern environmentally-soundrefinery facility at an estimatedcost of $30-$50 million.Turning now to communication

programs, I belive we have madesignificant progress:-As you will recall, Wint Newman

and his colleagues met with youlast April and reviewed theiroperational plans for 1980. Wintplans to request a similar meetingagain with you this year.

-Within the company, we haveinitiated face-to-facecommunications sessions with alldivisional employees; more than275 meetings were held to conductdiscussions of company plans andemployee concerns. Thesemeetings will be repeated on aregular basis.

-We have held recurring meetingson the subject of ocean miningwith the Regional Chairman, theMayor of Sudbury, Local 6500 ofthe United Steelworkers, and theSudbury Chamber of Commerce.

-We also conducted 590 SafetyWorkshop sessions to reviewsafety performance and ask forinput from employees as tomethods for improving safetyperformance.In this regard, I want to emphasize

our commitment to a very highstandard of safety performancethroughout the Company.Unfortunately, in 1980 we had sevenfatalities in our Canadian operations- six at Sudbury. This performancewas most unusual and was just not

acceptable. We have worked hard toidentify and eliminate the causes andwill continue to do so.

We know that the safetyimprovement objectives can beaccomplished with the cooperationand support of our employees andunions and the joint safety and healthcommittees. The well-being of ouremployees is a prime corporateobjective. We know that technologyand investment will not do the jobalone. It is people who produceresults.

I want to commend the efforts ofLocal 6500 to improve communityunderstanding, concerning thepossible future impact of oceanmining. As I am sure all of you know,the Union sponsored a seminar inSudbury in late February.Government representation fromSudbury, Ottawa and Toronto, unionofficials from Sudbury, Thompson andPort Colborne, and representatives ofRegional Government, Falconbridgeand Inco participated in thediscussions.

I also want to commend theHonourable Judy Erola, Minister of

State (mines), members of her staff,and his excellency J. Alan Beesley,Canadian Ambassador to the UnitedNations Law of The Sea Conference,for coming to Sudbury to present theFederal Government's position on thisimportant issue. I believe this is anexcellent example of the way inwhich all of us can and should worktogether on opportunities andproblems of mutual interest.

In closing Mr. Chairman I wouldlike to reiterate once again Inco'slong term commitment to Sudburyand our near term objective tomanage our rates of production in amanner to preclude or minimizeundue fluctuations in employment.

The long term value of Inco'sSudbury operations to this communityultimately depends on our ability toremain a reliable and competitivesupplier of nickel, copper andprecious metals to the internationalmarket. We are committed asresponsible managers to theachievement of that goal. To fulfillthat responsibility we will need theco-operation and support of allconcerned.

EPABX automatesphone system at ,

Garson mine

EPABX has come to Garson mine.The electronic private automatic

branch exchange, EPABX for short, isa computerized interplant te'ephonesystem, the only one of its kind inthe Ontario division, according toWarren Thompson, telephoneforeman in the power section of thecentral utilities department. Warren'scommunication crew was responsiblefor installing the EPABX whichreplaced the original, somewhatoutdated interplant telephoneexchange

'The original exchange wasobsolete and had deteriorated beyondrepair," Warren explained.

The battery-operated EPABX canhandle 24 conversationssimultaneously from a total capacityof 192 lines. It consists of themaintenance administration panel andthe main exchange panel.

The maintenance administrationpanel is used for systemprogramming and diagnosingproblems or trouble shooting" withinthe exchange. It features anilluminated readout which showscommunication personnel what ishappening while it is being operated.

The main exchange consists ofapproximately 40 printed circuit

boards and a micro-processor whichhandles all normal traffic flow andoption functions. A cassette taperecorder within the main exchange,stores all information that isprogrammed into the system. Shouldthere be a malfunction, it isdiagnosed and repaired. After therepair is made, the tape recorder willreprogram the system within threeand a half minutes.

The communication process from acafling party to a caUed party takesonly seconds to complete.

n the start-up program, theexchange, including the requiredoptions, is established as a fullyfunctional system. Specific programinstructions are keyed in to themaintenance administration panelthen transmitted to the mainexchange.

To complete the communicationlink, the micro-processor channelsthe information to the appropriatecircuit board. The micro-processoris like the human brain that sends asignal to a certain part of the body tocommand it to start performing,"Warren explained. From the circuitboard the information is sent to thetelephone being called, whether it beunderground or on surface.

The exchange features fail-safetotal electrical failure protection andlightning surge protection, as well asoptions such as call forward andstation call back. This improvescommunication efficiency, Warrenstated. The exchange is expandab'eto the future needs at Garson mine. Itcan also be interconnected with BellCanada's telephone lines whichwould further reduce operating costsand improve communicationservices."

it took about a month for the newexchange to receive the 'fullyoperational" status, a job whichinvolved installing new surface cablesto interconnect with those existingones underground and on surfaceand familiarizing those responsible forits installation and Garson personnelwith the operating functions andcommand codes.

It was a very interesting job toperform," Warren commented. Welearned a lot about installing theexchange from the manuals thatcame with it."

The transition from the old to thenew went as smooth as silk'' andthe reason for that, Warren stated,was due to the fine workmanship ofthe people involved."

Bottles a lesson in historyfor Richard JacobsAs far as hobbies go, RichardJacobs, a maintenance mechanicwith central maintenance, has gothimself a dandy. He collects bottles.Definitely time consuming, oftenexpensive and absolutely fascinating,Richard's fixation with bottles of allkinds from the past has led to himbuilding a collection of severalthousand bottles of every shape andhue imaginable.

Richard began hunting for bottlesabout eight years ago. "I just cameacross a box of bottles that someonewas throwing away," he recalls. "Ileft it in the basement for a while.Then I picked up a book on bottlesand it started."

Now he estimates his ever-growingcollection to be somewhere betweenseven and nine thousand bottles. "Ilost track a long time ago," smilesRichard. He places the value of hisbottles at "about $15,000" with acouple of pieces being worth morethan $100 each.

He hastens to add that this isneither the biggest nor the mostexpensive bottle collection around.Some collectors in Southern Ontariohave gathered nearly twice thenumber of bottles, some of which arepriced in the several thousand dollarrange. There are about 180 bottlecollectors in the nation at the presenttime.

Through the autumn and winter,Richard spends about three days aweek dealing with some aspect ofbottle collecting. During the summerhe devotes himself to camping andfishing with his children. Already thisyear Richard has spent six or sevenweekends searching for bottles inSouthern Ontario where bottlepickings are much better. He attendsbottle shows where he buys orbargains for new acquisitions.

In the past, Richard has dug forbottles in old dump sites or hastraded or purchased them a few at atime, Experience has taught him thatthe best way to get bottles is to buyentire collections. "That's the onlyway to buy," he declares. "If I wentout and bought them piecemeal itwould be too expensive." An entirecollection of bottles might yield only afew items that he does not alreadyhave. The rest he saves and stores.He uses them for trading purposes orhe sells them from his booth at theflea market.

A large part of Richard's basementis devoted to housing his startlingcollection. The shape, style, colourand labels of the bottles all yieldsome hints and insights into the past.

Some date as far back as 1890.Many, like the bottle that used amarble floating in the neck to sealitself, are real conversation pieces.Others would inspire fits of nostalgiafor those old enough to remembersuch bottles.

Richard points to a bottle that usedto contain a cure-all from theProhibition era known as LydiaPinkham's Vegetable Compound."With a gin content of 30 per cent,the stuff didn't cure too many peopleof anything but it sure made themfeel better," he says with a laugh.

Richard's collection includes patentmedicine bottles, perfume bottles,liquor bottles, ink bottles, pop bottles,beer bottles and a whole lot of bottlesthat fall into the miscellaneouscategory.

Richard is especially interested inbeer bottles. His shelves hold beerbottles from one coast of Canada tothe other dating back severaldecades. As well as old paperlabelled longnecks from Sudbury'sown Silverfoam brand, Richard has

some old Labatt's bottles that featurethe old "beermobile" on the label andexhortations to buy war bonds on thebackside of labels.

Collecting has been an educationalexperience for Richard. He hasgained a lot of knowledge about everyfacet of bottles, from the way theywere made to the people, companiesand towns with which they wereassociated. It is not unusual to findRichard pouring through microfilms orwriting for information from someindividual or institution in order totrace the origins of one of his bottles."I was never interested in history inschool," he notes. "With this interestin bottles I've been digging intohistory of companies and eventowns."

Having heard of some of his bottlehunting endeavours, some peoplehave come to question Richard'ssanity. "Once they come and see itall, they change their minds," hesays. While inflation diminishes thevalue of other things, Richardcontinues, his bottle collection iscontinually going up in value. Citingsmoking, drinking and other'recreations' he points out that hecould be spending his money morefoolishly than on historical bottles.

Lately Richard has beenconcentrating his efforts in findingbottles native to Northern Ontario."I'm partial to bottles from theNorth," he adds. He welcomes anyhelp people are willing to offer inlocating such bottles.

By the same token, Richard iswilling to share his expertise and timewith anyone wanting to learn about orbegin bottle collecting. For a bottlehunting novice or anyone with even aremote interest in history, Richardrepresents a considerable resource.

Over the last two years Inco'ssystems implementation team hasbeen introducing the standardmaintenance management system tothe Port Colborne nickel refinery. Asthe team's work draws nearer tocompletion, a better, more efficientapproach to maintenance functions ishappening.

Following a preparation period of afew months, the systemsimplementation team from CopperCliff's central maintenancedepartment began the business oflaying the foundations for thestandard maintenance managementsystem in September, 1979. LenoCrema, senior mechanicalmaintenance engineer and seniorproject leader, Jack Musico, centralmaintenance supervisor of systemsand controls, Terry Heale,preventativemaintenance specialist and CharlieNicholson, accounting systemsspecialist, formed the systemsimplementation squad.

Their task, basically, was todevelop a new approach to the

Standard maintenance managementsystem makes things more efficientin Port Colborneoperation of the refinery'smaintenance section. The newapproach is a four faceted programinvolving a work order system, apreventative maintenance program,cost control and budgeting and amaterial procurement plan.

The previous system did not usework orders, so when breakdownsoccurred there was no means to allowa proper cost analysis of work thatwent into repair or replacement ofequipment. "There was no way theycould job-cost the job," says Jack."There was no way they could isolatethe cost of the job."

Now all costs incurred bymaintenance people are detailed on awork order system. Labor, materialand overhead costs are all dulynoted. Because maintenance costsaccount for such a large slice ofoperations expenses in a year, Jacknotes that it is imperative for acompany to get control ofmaintenance costs. He calls it "oneof the most important areas forindustry in the 1980's."

Before the adoption of thepreventative maintenance program,equipment maintenance involvedgoing from one. breakdown to thenext. Terry Heale undertook anexhaustive cataloguing of all thespecifications of every piece ofequipment in the plant. Now aninspection and lubrication programhas been instituted to maintain theupkeep of the equipment on a regularbasis.

The physical and safety standards,as a result of the new approach,have been upgraded significantly.Adds Jack: "The physical conditionof this old plant has improved to thepoint where they have very fewbreakdowns. Production schedulesare being met and great cost savingsare being realized."

The introduction of cost controland budgeting has seen the types ofmaintenance work defined andseparated. "It allows operators tobetter manage their maintenanceworkload," continues Jack. " Coststhat are being incurred can becontrolled and monitored." Nowcosts can be calculated on a weeklyor a monthly basis giving operatorssome idea of which direction to worktowards.

The material procurement planmeans that labour and materials areplanned completely for each jobahead of time. Previously materialsand men were ordered as each job

arose causing wasted manpower andmaterials. The inefficiencies havebeen removed from this system.

Jack reports the Port Colborneoperators are pleased with the newdevelopments. "The operating of thisplant by operations and maintenanceis just as good as any plant in theprovince," he concludes. The newsystem should be in place bySeptember, 1981 and, at that time,the total responsibility of running themaintenance management programwill be with Port Colborne personnelunder the supervision of BillKantymir, superintendent ofoperations.

What would you do if you were inone of those predicaments? Wherewould you turn for help?

The answer may be as close asyour next door neighbour's frontwindow where there is a distinctivered and white sign of a child holdingan adult's hand and the wordsBLOCK PARENT printed on the sign.

In an emergency situation, anyoneof any age can go to such a homesays Bill Thompson, chairman of theJaycees organizing committee forthe Sudbury Regional Block ParentAssociation and its Block ParentProgram. "There's no age limit for

those who want to use the program,"Bill explained. "It is, however,primarily geared to pre-schoolers andelementary school children."

The aim of the Block ParentProgram, which was initiated inLondon, Ontario in 1968 by theNational Council of Jewish Women, isto discourage those who would preyon children. The program consists ofseveral homes on each block in acommunity displaying a BLOCKPARENT sign. The sign indicates to achild that help and protection in anemergency are available at that homewhen the sign is displayed.

A few years ago the SudburyJaycees became involved inorganizing local groups of concernedcitizens who wished to adopt theBlock Parent Program in their areas.Along with financial assistance fromthe Jaycees, the program wasimplemented and formally endorsedby; the Sudbury Regional PoliceCommission, the Sudbury Regional

Police, the Regional Municipality ofSudbury, the Sudbury Board ofEducation, the Separate Schools ofthe District of Sudbury, the OntarioSafety League, the CanadianAssociation of Chiefs of Police, andthe Canada Safety Council.

An "outgrowth of the program" asBill puts it, was the establishment ofthe Sudbury Regional Block ParentAssociation earlier this year. Therewas a definite need for the programand the association, Bill stated."There isn't an area in this regionthat isn't immune to a child beingmolested or physically abused."

The Sudbury Regional Block ParentAssociation consists of an executivebody whose members includerepresentatives from the SudburyRegional Police, the Jaycees, theRegional Municipality of Sudbury, theseparate and public school boards:area co-ordinators who areresponsible for organizing the BlockParent Program in their own areas;

turn in an emergencyand those concerned citizens whohave had the title BLOCK PARENTbestowed on them. "It is a privilegeto be a Block Parent, not a right,Bill commented.

Block Parents have no legal statusexcept that of private citizens. Theyhave volunteered to act asresponsible adults in emergencysituations involving young or old intheir neighbourhood.

Any responsible person over theage of 15, married or single, with orwithout children of their own, maybecome a Block Parent once theirBlock Parent application form hasbeen screened and approved by theSudbury Regional Police. Theapplication form is available from anyelementary school principal in theRegion, any Block Parent area co-ordinator or the Sudbury RegionalPolice.

Although still in its infancy, theSudbury Regional Block ParentAssociation has attracted some 3,000Block Parents and about one-third of

those are Inco employees, accordingto Bill.

Don Wighton, a surveyor at Levackmine, and his wife Carol, who is aBlock Parent area co-ordinator,reside in Lo-Ellen Park/Long Lakesection of the Region. They learnedabout the Block Parent program fromDon's brother who is a Block Parentin Toronto. With children of theirown, Don and Carol thought beingBlock Parents would be veryworthwhile. One of theresponsibilities as a Block Parent,Don said, was educating his ownchildren about the Block ParentProgram. Although they are quiteyoung, we are trying to teach them,that a Block Parent home is like asecond home. If they are scared or introuble, it's a safe place to go. It's asanctuary for them."

Al Cruthers, superintendent ofoperations at the copper refinery, andhis wife Linda recently became BlockParents in the Copper Cliff area. Theywere made aware of the Block Parent

Program through neighbour BarbWhite, Copper Cliff Block Parent areaco-ordinator. Their interest grew andsoon after they were recipients of aBLOCK PARENT sign. "Naturally weare concerned about the welfare ofour own children, but we are alsoconcerned about other children," Alstated. "As Block Parents we feelsatisfied to be of help to those whoneed it."

Barb White stressed the point thatbeing a Block Parent is not a glorifiedbabysitting job. "It's a means ofbetter protecting children. Inemergencies involving childmolesters it is the Block Parent'sresponsibility to call police andparents while protecting the child,"she explained. "When a child isinjured or ill, the Block Parent mustcontact the child's parents. If theyare unavailable, the Block Parentshould contact the police.

"If I can prevent a child from beingfrightened, isn't that reason enoughto become a Block Parent?''

Camera Club, may be a littlemisleading. The emphasis is not oncamera equipment, but rather oncreative quality color slides. "Ourbasic philosophy is that you don'teven need a camera - you onlyneed an interest in photography to bepart of the club."

For a nominal membership fee,people have the opportunity toexchange ideas and receive helpfrom other club members. They canget answers to questions they mayhave. It also gives people a chanceto enter their work in contests andexhibit some of their better slides.

The purposes of the club includefostering an interest in color

photography; promoting color slides,print salons, and exhibitions;compiling and circulating informationrelating to color photography; andpromoting and sustaining friendlyrelationships among persons engagedin color photography. The club is notcompletely confined to color slides,however, and some members also docolor prints or black and whitephotography.

But do you know how to maintainyour lawn properly?

lncos gardener Alex Gray offeredsome basic, helpful hints to ensure ahealthy lawn.

All debris such as dead leaves andbranches that have gathered over thewinter should be removed by rakingthe lawn thoroughly. This preventsthe spread of fungus or diseaseorganisms, Alex explained.

'A uniform application of springfertilizer will rejuvenate a lawn thathas been inactive all winter, hecontinued. Fertilizer helps a healthylawn to better tolerate stresses suchas drought, wear, extreme heat,in sect and disease problems.Excessive nitrogen applicationsshould be avoided, especially duringheat stress or prior to winterdormancy. During heat stress or

drought, too much nitrogen-basedfertilizer increases plant growth whenlittle water is available. Plants may bemore susceptible to winter injury ifexcessive amounts of nitrogen areapplied prior to winter dormancy.

Many different types of fertilizer,some of which contain herbicides andinsecticides, are available for specifictimes of the year. Application ratesare located on the fertilizer bags.

Your lawn mower should bemaintained in good mechanicalcondition with sharp blades. "Bluntblades tend to split the grass leafrather than cut it straight across,"Alex added. "The split grass leaf diesback and turns white, giving yourlawn a streaked appearance."

Cut the grass when it isapproximately two inches high butavoid removing more than 40 percent of the grass leaf at any onemowing. "A trimmed lawn gives yourhouse a well-groomed appearance,and you are better able to control thelawn's growth because water and

fertilizer are readily available to theroot systems. If the grass isexcessively long, it gives the lawn anunsightly appearance and can createdisease problems."

Short grass clippings decay rapidlyand do not necessarily requireremoval from the lawn once it hasbeen mowed. Excessive clippingsmust be removed to prevent diseasedevelopment. Avoid cutting the lawnon a wet day for two reasons. Firstfor the obvious safety hazard andsecondly wet grass could spreaddisease to the rest of the lawn.

Watering the lawn in the morningminimizes disease problems. Itdoesn't have to be watered every daybut it should be watered enough tomoisten the entire root zone, aminimum of one inch per week. Ahome sprinkler remaining in onelocation for four to eight hours willmeet the weekly wateringrequirement.

Tree and Shrub MaintenanceStaking trees- check the stake periodically tomake sure the stake, tying ropesand/or wires are not biting into thebark.- stakes usually can be removedtwo years after planting.Cultivation- cut a circle out of the sod aroundthe base of the trees to prevent nicksfrom lawn mowers or trimmers.- keep shrub beds and edge bedsfree of weeds to preserve shape.Pruning-to maintain trees and shrubs in ahealthy condition and desired shape,remove all dead or damagedbranches: cut away all diseasedwood.- pamphlets are available at theOntario Ministry of Agriculture andFood office.- remove crossing or rubbing limbsand suckers to give the tree a clean,open appearance.- prune deciduous trees in latewinter, except maple and birch whichshould be pruned in early summer toavoid bleeding; in the springflowering shrubs should be prunedsoon after they have flowered:shrubs that bloom in ate summer orfall should be pruned in early spring.- prune to an outside bud; maintaina wide rather than a narrow branchangle when pruning, cut close to themain branch or stem - do not eavea stub; undercut large branches firstso the weight of the branch will notcause the bark to peel or split prunehedges wider at the bottom than atthe top.Changing grade- do not add soil over trunk or rootsof trees.- maintain the original soil level toapproximately half the spread of thefoliage.- if lowering the grade, maintain a

Disease, insect and weed control- identify the source of the problem,then seek information and assistanceon control measures from the OntarioMinistry of Agriculture and Food andthe Ministry of Natural Resources.- depending on the problem, controlmeasures may be necessary.- in lawns, it is necessary to treatwhite grubs, sod webworms andcutworms.- in trees and shrubs, treat birchleaf miner, aphids, the sprucebudworm, etc.- reduce disease problems withproper sanitation procedures.- dense, healthy turf is the bestprotection against weed problems.- reduce weed problems withchemical herbidices.- apply any pesticide, insecticide,fungicide and/or herbicide accordingto the manufacturers directions. Useproper safety protection equipmentsuch as rubber gloves, mask, rubbersuit, etc.- avoid spraying on windy days.- do not apply pesticides in thesame sprayer used for herbicides.- store chemica's in a safe placedestroy the container when it'sempty.

Charlotte, his wife, works part-time for the Niagara South Board of Education andlikes sewing and knitting in her leisure hours.Rod is astudent at Niagara College, works part-time in adepartment store and enjoys photography as a hobby.Lisa is a grade eight student at McKay Senior PublicSchool, a pathfinder and likes swimming.

Sonny Mukherjee, environmental co-ordinator in Copper Cliff, and hisfamily enjoy sports. They are involved in competitive swimmffig, longdistance running and tennis. May, 1937The May Triangle of 1937 reported

the course of events at the firstannual Inter-Plant First Aid Contestfor "the new R.D. Parker Shield."Teams from Creighton, Coniston,Frood and Copper Cliff vied for thehonors.

Copper Cliff proved victorious witha squad consisting of Elliot Lawson(captain), Tom Gladstone, WesMcNeice, Gordon Guthries andNathan Crawford (substitute). Thenew Parker Shield had not returnedfrom the engravers in time for thepresentation but R.D. Parker was onhand to present the men withindividual medals.

1949 Inco team captures Ontario title.

Tom Gladstone had, a few daysbefore the competition, proved justhow invaluable first aid training was.He saw a woman get struck by a caron the Coniston Road. He was able toadminister first aid and give thecorrect diagnosis of her injuries whenshe was taken to a doctor.

The first basketball championshipin Port Colborne's history, the OntarioIntermediate C crown, was won bythe Inco team at the Inco RecreationClub. The Incoites rebounded from aten point deficit to take the two-gametotal point-series from Port Hope.

In an article about the purchasingdepartment, the Triangle detailed aportion of Inco's shopping list to givereaders some idea of the millions ofdollars spent on supplies for theentire operation. It included: 283,000bags of cement and 60,000 yards ofgravel, 30,000 tons of steel for drillsteel, punch bars, grinding rods andballs, 545,000 tons of coal and120,000 tons of furnace coke, 10,000carats a month of industrial diamondsfor drill bits, 600,000 feet of wirerope for small slushers, 39,000,000feet, or 1,500 carloads of Ontario andBritish Columbia lumber and timber,$540,000 worth of electric wire andcable, 384 carloads of explosives,$653,000 worth of rubber belts andhose, 7,000 kegs of nails or enoughfor 18 carloads, 11,000,000 gallonsof fuel oil, and 12 car loads ofwelding rods.

May, 1968The company announced a

$31 000,000 development of a mineand concentrator at Shebandowan,50 miles west of Thunder Bay. TheShebandowan property was acquiredin 1937, but only small scale drillingwas undertaken until 1965 whenactivity intensified. Diamond drillingoutlined a mediumsize ore depositwith a nickelcopper content similarto that in the Sudbury District.

The First Lively Boy Scout Troops won the annual Sudbury andDistrict Boy Scout First Aid Competition held recently atAgincourt Public School in Sudbury. Four area scout teamsparticipated in the competition which tested the troops' first aidknowledge both in written and practical applications. Joe Rossi of central services is seen here giving the gift of lifefor the 50th time. Carol Tataryn, a clinical assistant,supervises the operation. Red Cross officials are particular'yhappy to see Joe come into the clinic because they find hisblood rather special. They have been able to identify all theantigens in his blood make-up therefore giving them a rare anduseful tool in the laboratory. Joe's blood, among other things,is used to determine which antigen is being rejected by certainrecipients of transfusions. When the antigen is identified, ablood type without the troublesome antigen is administered tothe patient. Joe's blood is also used for transfusion purposes.

The Centre des Jeunes Social Dancing Club held their annualDance Festival recently at the Caruso Club which proved to bea great success with some 500 people turning out for theperformancesThis group, members of the Centre des Jeunes Social DancingClub, put on an impressive five minute display of dancing skills.The group incorporated different dances in their routineincluding a Viennese waltz, a tango, rock and roll, and arumba. Twenty teams from Creighton mine participated in the secondannual Creighton Mine Employees Curling Bonspiel recently atthe Copper Cliff Curling Club, Some 80 people had theopportunity to vie for top title. Although only four men made itto the top, no one was a loser because all players received aprize for their efforts. Employees at the Copper Cliff nickel refinery recently held theirannual Spring Dinner Dance at the Club Alouette. In addition toan enjoyable meal and dancing, there was also a champagnehour which is fast becoming a tradition at the refinery'sdances. SuggestionPlan AwardsDuring the first quarter of 1981 thesuggestion plan paid awards totalling$32,275 on 353 suggestions. The singlelargest pay out, $3, 785, went toHarold Koivula of the copper refinery forhis new design for tankhouse bus barlock bolts. The company realized firstyear savings of $97,860 on adoptedsuggestions. The average award foraccepted suggestions was $91.43.

Major Winners$3,785 Harold Koivula of the copper refinery earned the top award in this month's suggestion plan for

his idea of a new design for tank-house bus bar lock bolts. With Harold's innovation of havingthe bolts threaded into the back flange plate rather than being welded, considerable efficienciesare being realized when the time comes to change these bolts. No longer do anodes orcathodes have to be removed, there is no need to take the bus apart, no crane is required andthe power is down for only a short time, which wasn't the case before Harold's great idea.

$1,460 Better butterfly damper valves sent a healthy cheque to Port Colborne's Steve Marinich. Stevebuilt twelve of these valves from waste and salvaged material for installation in the process ventsystem. His butterfly valves proved to be superior to the purchased P.V.C. values thereby savinga lot of money.

$1,005 Finding that scooptram compressors mounted on the blower housing with an adjustable pulleywas not only too difficult to change but also promoted damaged housings when pulleys wereadjusted or the engine vibrated, Nash Taha of South mine offered an alternative. Mount thecompressor on the frame above the alternator along with slotted base holes to eliminate theadjustable pulley, Nash advised. This, it was found, prevented broken fan housings anddamaged compressor pulleys.

$685 Bob Homer of Little Stobie mine proposed that Jarco ST5 bucket arm inserts be removed andreplaced with enlarged inserts with standardized ST4 bucket arm bushings. This proved todecrease considerably the machine's down-time and maintenance costs.

$500 The rapid rate at which oil lances in the FBR were plugging up and deteriorating inspired NinoNarduzzi of matte processing to come up with an improvement. He recommended that a

tee" be added to the lance in place of the 90 degree elbow, along with a check valve and anairline. Nino foresaw, quite correctly, that the life of a lance could be extended significantly andcosts thereby lowered, with air pushing oil through the lance.

$490 Henry Roy of Coleman mine came up with the idea to convert the Jenny steam cleaner from aportable unit to a permanent installation at wash bays underground. This eliminated wear andtear the cleaner suffered as it was hauled to and from the surface.

$150 A method of strengthening launder piston rods earned Roger Landry of the nickel refinerysome extra cash. With the rods lasting longer, costs have been reduced.

$150 Bernard Forestall of the nickel refinery thought a power device, such as an electric impactwrench or an air drill, should be installed on the hoist at the no. 1 reactor in the pressure plantand utilities building. This was found to be not only a labour saver, but also a safer way ofoperating the hoist.

$150 Rino Soucy and Doug Ashick, both of Levack mine, collaborated to come up with fastermeans of recharging the batteries of Jarco scoops. Rather than suffer a loss in production andmanpower while waiting for a mechanic to repair the machine, they suggested that a Sunnydalealternator, driven by an air motor, be used to recharge batteries.

$125 In order to stop the boom assembly on the no. 416 Unimog from bottoming out" and toprevent its coil springs, shocks and frame from breaking, Tom Boyd of Stobie mine advisedthat the shocks and springs be removed and solid mounts be installed.

$120 Raymond Fortin of South mine suggested that the Wheaton gun jet assembly be replaced witha new gun jet nozzle for washing mobile equipment. The new nozzle is less expensive than theWheaton gun jet.

$115 A proposal by Clayton Madore of Frood mine to put the Amax loader on a rubber wheeledcart, was found effective in preventing damage while being transported.

$115 When he found a hydraulic press control handle to have no neutral position or a positionindicator, John Krnich of divisional shops, thought of mounting a spring on both sides in orderto allow the lever to be pulled back into a neutral position. This, along with an arrow welded tothe handle to indicate up, down or neutral positions, permitted safer handling of the press.

$105 Boris Lariviere of Creighton mine found the removal arrangement of the drop chute to be tooawkward, so he suggested it be changed. Now, when repairs are being made, things run moresmoothly and more safely.

$100 Eugene McGregor of South mine suggested that water fountain valves be used on soapdispensers to promote a steady, strong flow of soap. Because suppliers no longer manufacturethe appropriate va'ves, Eugene's nnovation saved having to change the entire dispenser.

$100 Relocating the skip dump camera and lights was a thought put forward by Ronald Richardsonof Frood mine when he noticed the view getting obstructed by wet muck. Now employees canplainly see the slide and muck bin.

$100 Normand Bernetchez of the Iron Ore Recovery Plant submitted the idea of installing a bracketto support the repulp feed line tee. This keeps it from slanting and wearing away on one side.Cost savings in equipment and down-time have been realized.

$100 It used to be that repair work on a crane would have to wait until extension cords and portablelights were brought up to the crane, There is no longer such a watt after Lou Moulaison of thesmelter suggested that extra lights be installed in the panel room and cab of the crane.

$100 Joe Fabbro of Port Colborne suggested that the by-pass switch on no. 17 crane controls berelocated. Now when a craneman has to lift higher than the switch limit he will no longer need

Teachers become studentsForty teachers from across

Canada attended the IdentityCurriculum Research Project miningworkshop in Sudbury last month.

Initiated four years ago in BritishColumbia, the project seeks tointroduce teachers to methods andapproaches of making elementarystudents aware of the mining industryin Canada. It is co-sponsored by theFaculty of Education of the Universityof British Columbia, the Faculty ofEducation of the University of

Toronto, and the Canadian Miningand Metallurgical Foundation.

The teachers were introduced tothe world of mining, the mysteries ofthe Sudbury Basin and its ores andefficient, effective, enjoyable ways ofteaching aspects of the industry toyoungsters.

Jim Darrach, project co-ordinator,stressed the importance ofacquainting students with mining, itsrole in the Canadian economy and itscareer possibilities.

He notes that the milling industrywas the first industry to co-operatethe educators to develop acomprehensive program forelementary school children. In a timeof declining enrolments when fewertax dollars are becoming available foreducators, the mining industry ishelping school boards across thecountry teach kids about itself, Jimsays.

It makes our kids more aware ofthe world of work," he explains. '1know for years industry has beencrying that kids were coming out ofschool unprepared for the world ofwork." The identity curriculumproject is helping to change that.

The project has attractedinternational attention. Jim says hehas received letters of inquiry on theprogram from all over the world.Presently project officials arecollaborating with educators from theUnited Kingdom on establishing aprogram for secondary schoolstudents.

Censusii Count yourself in on June 3June 3, 1981 is Census Day in

Canada - the day when you andmore than 24 million other Canadianswill be asked to count ourselves in byfilling out a census questionnaire.

The census is a 315-year oldtradition in Canada and we arerequired under the law to completethe census form. All information youprovide will be kept strictlyconfidential, but combined with datafrom others it helps to form thecomplete picture of Canada neededat the start of the 80s. Yourparticipation will ensure a completeand accurate 1981 Census that willbenefit all of us.What the Census tells us

Facts and figures gathered on June3 will create a pool of comprehensiveinformation about Canada andCanadians that will help us betterunderstand ourselves and our society.

For example, past censuses haveshown that a smaller proportion ofCanadians are forming traditional two-parent families, and those whoestablish families are waiting longerto do so. The 1981 Census isexpected to confirm this trend, aswell as the trend to smaller families,with fewer than two children as thenorm.

The 1981 Census likely will showthat families in eastern Canada arelarger on average than those incentral and western Canada, andfamilies in rural areas are larger thanthose in urban areas.

Census information will alsoprovide an up-to-date picture of themarital status of Canadians. Althoughmarriage has lost appeal for some,more than 90% of Canadians willmarry at least once. The rate ofdivorce, however, in 1979 was

almost twice as great as it was at thelast decennial census.

We will need accurate andcomplete figures from the June 3Census to provide data on criticalissues such as the status of womenin the Canadian work force. Forexample, although more women havejoined the work force over the pastdecade, do the majority still occupyclerical or lower-paying jobs? Willthere continue to be a wage gap forsimilar work performed by men andwomen?

When information from the June 3Census becomes available, we willlearn what changes have occurred inthis and other important social andeconomic trends. The data from thecensus, our census, will enable us allto see more clearly what must bedone to improve equity andopportunity for all Canadians.

It was a farewell visit and awelcome visit all in one.

CIL officials bid farewell to theiremployees at the CIL acid plant asthe plant recorded its 50thanniversary as a production unit ofthe Copper Cliff works.

The CIL employees were welcomedto the Inco family by Ontario Divisionpresident Winton Newman andGeorge Nowlan, manager of the IronOre Recovery Plant.

"We are very happy to have thenew employees join the Inco workforce," stated George Nowlan. "Theyare very capable people and willperform a useful function inintegrating the operation of the IronOre Recovery Plant and the CopperCliff smelter flash furnace inrecovering sulphur dioxide in the formof marketable products."
