Who? Why? How?
1MM is a unique, community-based mentoring programme, quickly growing roots around
the UK. The aim is to transform young lives by connecting one million young people with one million mentors. This ambitious
scheme backs the talents of young people to improve their
career chances, while at the same time strengthening local
communities. 1MM was founded on the belief that
through personal, one-to-one mentoring, more young
people can grow the knowledge, networks, skills
and confidence they need to succeed.
Mentoring can provide a much-needed, though currently undervalued,
intervention. It links individuals with high social
capital to young people who have low social capital, in an effort to
accelerate social mobility. Through the provision of
trained volunteer mentors from within the business world and community,
1MM boosts support and advice for young people in
the areas of education, employment and social
action.
1MM has developed an online platform, using latest
technologies, to train people who are working, retired or on a career break, to be digitally matched with
our youth partners (schools, colleges, universities, employment
programmes and charities). Mentors are then introduced to their mentee who they meet for
one hour, once a month, for up to a year. The young people we
reach have high potential but low social capital – that is, limited access to social networks and
relationships which will help them to fulfil their potential.
1MM regularly supports mentors and youth partners to engage in a positive relationship via ongoing
training and regular impact surveys.

“One thing I have learned in my career is the value of having a mentor - it’s helped me take important decisions in work and in life. It’s that lesson that is at the heart of the Mayor’s Mentors initiative. These mentors will be people who are successful in their careers and who can give a hand up for young people just starting out, in work or those setting up on their own.”
Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street
1MM in the West MidlandsWorking with the Mayor’s Mentors scheme, 1MM has partnered with a significant number of youth partners and businesses in the region.
1MM is now one of the leading mentoring providers in the West Midlands, having successfully partnered with 32 youth partners across Birmingham, Coventry, Redditch, Telford and Wolverhampton. We are delighted with the enthusiastic response that we have received from youth partners who are committed to ensuring the programme works for all young people.
In the past year, we have delivered approximately 32 mentee inductions with over 250 young people.
1MM continues to strengthen its pool of mentors by engaging diverse businesses across the region; ensuring our mentees benefit from a wide range of experiences and insights. We are now engaged with over 100 employers who support our work and provide trusted mentors. We have delivered 13 mentor workshops to upskill 183 volunteer mentors.
This year, we secured our first corporate sponsorship – from National Grid to deliver an on-site mentor induction, as well as a large scale mentoring workshop locally in Solihull.
At the end of this year, we are thrilled that 70% of mentors have signed up to mentor with 1MM again.

1MM in the West Midlands: case study
“When I was younger I don’t think I had enough self-belief, so with my mentees I try to encourage them to believe in themselves.
It’s easy to doubt yourself, particularly in a world of social media and ‘fomo’ [fear of missing out]. I think it’s really difficult for young people to be self-assured in that environment. So I want all of them to be clearer about what they want to do, then help them to believe that they can achieve it.”
“I was somebody who didn’t have faith in terms of what careers and opportunities are available out there. The fact that I’m from a deprived area, Walsall, would knock my confidence and make me feel like I’m not worthy compared to people who are middle class and in a private school.
I think personally my biggest fear was racism, and speaking to Boris opened me up and made me realise that things like my name shouldn’t put me off in terms of what company I apply for.”
Hifsa was mentored through 1MM while studying accounting at Walsall College. Her one-to-one mentoring with Boris, a CEO at a local housing association in Walsall, had a life-changing impact on her confidence.
Boris is CEO at Walsall housing association, Rooftop Group, and dedicated one hour a month to support his mentee, Hifsa.
Meet our mentors1MM is thrilled to be working with diverse mentors from a range of sectors and backgrounds, who are committed to providing high-quality support and guidance for our young people.
71% of our mentors surveyed said they would mentor with 1MM again.
In the West Midlands 70% of mentors have committed to either a new mentoring relationship or supporting their mentee for another year.

“It’s a really rewarding experience - you’re going to have your eyes opened to what life is like for young people today and the challenges and opportunities they face. But you might also learn something about yourself. It’s an all-round, positive two-way experience and that’s why I’ve agreed to continue doing it if there are mentees who want it.”
Boris Worrall, CEO, Rooftop Housing Group

Mentor development
“I found it [the mentor workshop] both motivational and inspiring in equal measure. Above all it helped me to appreciate that I am now a small cog in a very large machine that is going to have a huge beneficial impact on our society in the future!”
Paul Brennan, Adastra Training
98% of mentors said the mentor workshop met or exceeded their
expectations
1MM conducts regular workshops across our regions to upskill mentors, signpost them to resources and provide an opportunity to network with like-minded people in their community. At each workshop, we are inspired by the commitment, energy and enthusiasm shared by our mentors as they come together to learn how they can provide the best support for young people.

1MM in the West Midlands: what’s next?
By March 2020, we will have facilitated 1,271 mentoring relationships, and look forward to working with the Mayors Mentors scheme to continue scaling our offer across the region.
We are delighted by our deepening relationships with leading businesses such as National Grid, and will be looking to amplify existing relationships, as well as establishing new ones, with more businesses across the region.
We are looking forward to strengthening partnerships with youth partners such as Telford College - who have committed to recruiting 160 young people over the next academic year - and extend our offer to more young people living in some of the region’s most deprived communities.
