One Million Mentors
What we do
Why?
How?
UpRising is a UK-wide youth leadership development organisation opening pathways to power for talented young people. To strengthen its offer UpRising has established a new initiative: One Million Mentors (1MM). Through technology 1MM harnesses the experiences and talents of professionals from different backgrounds to support young people to enter the world of work. We identify, recruit, train mentors and connect them to young people through partner organisations working with young people.
Young people today are suffering the worst economic prospects for several generations. Though mentoring is understood to have an impact on increasing opportunities for young people, the current offer in the UK is patchy in terms of quality, delivery and impact. Our aim is to mobilise professionals (current and retired) and train them to become effective mentors who can help maximise young people’s talent and support them into careers that are in line with their skill-sets.
Potential mentors will be signposted to our online platform (www.onemillionmentors.org.uk) which will provide information on the role of a mentor, the skills and time commitment required, details of all of our partner organisations and all relevant training materials. Importantly we will monitor the impact of mentors against a researched and tested set of indicators. Mentors will also have access to face-to-face training in their local area.

Our Work in the West Midlands
Over the past few years, the West Midlands has enjoyed considerable economic success. Driven by a
dynamic and thriving business community, wealth and opportunity have been brought into the
region making it a world class business hub.
However, not everyone has been able to benefit from this success. Mayor’s Mentors is a new
initiative launched by the West Midlands Mayor, Andy Street, to help give these young people, who
have perhaps not benefited as much from the growing Midlands economy, the life skills and advice
they need to flourish and alter their lives for the better.
Mayor’s Mentors is a fantastic way to get involved in transforming the lives of young people and
boosting pride in the region. Mentors will typically meet with a young person, face to face, one hour
per month, for up to twelve months, to discuss the young person’s ambitions and career
opportunities. Mayor’s Mentors has partnered with 1MM to scale up the offer of mentoring
throughout the region. One Million Mentors provides online training and resources, as well as offline
training events to help mentors prepare and enjoy their mentoring journey.
1MM has recently secured DCMS/ Nesta funding to roll out its offer with ambitious targets for
recruiting mentors and mentees, via third party organisations, across the region.
Our Impact so far…
70.8% 87% 41.6%
of mentees have stated that their mentors have been highly effective in
providing them with career advice and
guidance
of mentees have stated that they had fairly or significantly developed their employability
skills and personal effectiveness.
of mentees have said that they have made a good development in
access to networks since starting their mentoring
relationships.
Feedback tells us that the top two things that our mentors have valued are:
An increase in confidence
The opportunity to learn from someone new
